I got there just as the practice was breaking up. "Coach, can I get a couple of minutes with the squad?" "What gives Dennis?" "Please I'd rather just do this once." "OK, Gather round guys. Dennis has something he wants to say to you." The squad gathered round and all had serious looks on thier faces. "There's something I need you guys to be aware of before Anderson gets here, and it's better you hear it from me than from one of the loudmouths on their squad. Plain and simple I'm gay. Now if that makes any of you uncomfortable or it's a plain out problem, I want you to speak up now. I don't want any of you uncomfortable and having it affect your performance. Coach I'll bow out of the hosting spot if it's a problem." There were a few stunned faces and confused looks but nobody said anything. "I think you have your answer Dennis, but if any of you guys want to talk about this in private, wait by my door. Dennis I have your cell,I'll let you know." "Fair enough coach and if any of you guys want to talk one on one,I'll hang around for a bit." "Ok hit the showers!" Coach waited a few seconds while the guys made their way to the showers. "That took a lot of balls Dennis. But why now?" "If that loud mouth I mentioned dropped that on them a few hours before the meet where would their minds be during the event? Probably anywhere except where they should be. Now they have a couple of days to get their heads around it." "Well I can't fault your logic. I don't think there's going to be a problem though. I'll give you a call regardless after I'm sure everybody has had a chance to speak with me." "Fair enough coach. I'm going to hang here like I said for a bit." It was only a little bit later that the guys started filing out of the locker room. A few gave me a look but kept on walking. One of the guys though stopped when he came out the door and looked over at me. It just happened to be the team captain. He walked over to me and sat down. "That took guts Sawyer, and I appreciate why you did it. If it helps any I didn't see anybody stopping at the coaches office." "Thanks that does help. I didn't think anybody was going to have a problem with it,but I didn't want to take the chance;especially with this being the first meet of the season." "Hey we're going to whip their asses. So who is the loudmouth so we know who to ignore and maybe just screw with his mind a little." "He will identify himself in no uncertain terms I am sure. I can no more point him out for special attention than I could out somebody else. Just not ethical." "Sawyer you got more integrity than half the school. I'd use this guys hate against him in a second." "You may still get the chance, but it's not going to be because I told you so." "Fair enough. I've got to get it in gear. Group study an a half hour." "Later then." I sat there for about another half hour and nobody else stopped. Coach did come out and saw me sitting there. "Not a one stopped by the office Dennis,so I'd say we're good to go. Drop by here any time after 4 on Friday and get the guys room assignments and credentials." "Ok coach. I'm glad this worked out. Now I have to go attend another crisis." "Anything I can do to help out there?" "I doubt it coach. You've probably heard about the accident earlier today? Well I'm dealing with some of the fall out." "Good luck with that. I've got a faculty meeting to get to. Final practice tomorrow. Will we be seeing you?" "I'm making no promises coach. I may still be dealing with the fallout." "Understandable. I will see you Friday regardless right?" "Yes sir I made that commitment before this all happened so I'll be there." "Later then." So it was back to my room to find Karl,Pete, and Gordon pretty much just sitting in silence. "He hasn't said a word Den." "He doesn't need to Karl." Gordon was pretty much curled up on my bed. I sat down beside him and put a hand on is shoulder and he kind of recoiled from me. "Fine, just know that I'm here Gordon." "It's going to be a long night Den." "Along night and a long day at the very least. You guys might as well go get some supper. Just grab me something before you come back." "You want us to grab you anything Gordon?" Silence was the only answer. Pete and Karl only waited a few seconds before they headed out. Gordon and I just sat there in silence. I could have talked until I was blue in the face, but Gordon appeared to be in total shutdown. All I could do for right now was just be there for him. Pete came back a little while later and tossed me a sandwich, which I ate, again in silence. Pete just went to his studying. At some point I must have dozed off sitting there. I woke up with Gordons head on my thigh. The lights were out so it had to be late. I just slipped an arm around Gordons shoulder and drifted back off to sleep. I must have slept right through my alarm, because Pete was already up and dressed and getting ready to go out the door when I woke up. My movement must have disturbed Gordon as he looked at where he was and sat bolt up right. "Den......I didn't mean to.... I " "Relax Gordon, nothing happened except you got some sleep." "Will you take me back to the hospital?" "Of course." I had already made up my mind that I'd be missing my classes today. "Breakfast first though, espeecially where you didn't have any supper last night." "I don't think I could keep anything down Dennis." "You gotta try Gordon. Making yourself sick won't do anybody any good." "I guess not." It was down to the cafeteria and I had brekfast and Gordon had a glass of juice and some toast. We were off to the hospital and visiting hours had just started. We were allowed up to the floor where Aiden was but were stopped at the nurses station. Aiden still didn't want to see anybody. We waited all of the morning and about noontime a pair of adults came out of the elevator and went to the nurses station. I heard them ask for Aidens room and figured this had to be his parents. His father looked at us without saying a word and then headed down to Aidens room. "Gordon, I don't like the way that guy looked at us. Whatever you do don't let him provoke you into doing something stupid. In fact I think we should leave." "Not happening Den. I'll sit here until either I see Aiden, or they physically toss me out." "So be it." It was about 45 minutes later that the guy came out of the room and had a wild look in his eye. "Shit. This ain't gonna be good." Gordon and I both stood up. "Which one of you miserable little twerps is Dennis?" "I am sir." "Well I hope you're satisfied you little fuck, and I hope your piece of ass is worth it." "I don't know what Aiden told you sir,but this situation is nobodies fault but his own." I saw the hand coming and didn't make any move to avoid or stop it. Smack! "Don't you dare.....Hey!" Gordon got the guy by the arm he had struck me with and had taken him down and had a knee in his back. "Don't you ever lay a hand on him again! Aiden tried to coerce him into having sex with him. I heard it!" By this time hospital security was there and pulling Gordon off of the guy. "You want to press assault charges kid?" "No, I'd just as soon forget the whole thing." "What about you sir?" "Damn right I do!" "Dad! Knock it off." Aiden was standing in the corridor leaning on presumably his mother. "I didn't know they were out here. I lied. This isn't their fault at all. It's like they said." "Why you miserable little shit. Glynnis we're going home." "You may be going home Angus, but I'm staying here for a few days." "I said we're going home woman!" "And I said I'm staying with my son!" "It's costing us an arm and a leg to be sending him to this damn school. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for you to lollygag around here for days!" "Good thing I have my own money then isn't it. I'll be home when I get there." "You don't come with me now,you and your whelp can be finding another roof for yourselves!" "So be it!" The guy stormed off into the elevator and the woman looked like she damn happy well may faint. I went and got Aiden off of his mother and Gordon was right behind me to help her back into the room. Aiden looked at me like I had three heads when I went to help him back to his bed. "Why the hell are you guys even here?" "Because even though you were acting like a shithead,we still care. Gordon was the first one to get to you. He cried over you and blamed himself for you lying there in the street. It hurt so much because regardless he still cares for you deep down." Gordon had gotten Aidens mother seated and came to the other side of the bed. "Gordy?" The only answer that Gordon gave was to lean in and give Aiden a long and very meaningful kiss. "Oh my!" When Gordon moved back there were tears in both his and Aidens eyes. "Mom, I'd like you to meet Gordon my....?" "Boyfriend." "Boyfriend and Dennis, a better friend than I deserve." "From what I just heard in the hall I would dare say so. We'll talk about that later young man. Right now while you have your friends here I need to find a place to stay for a few days." "Pardon me for interupting, but there is a hospice house right next door." "Oh Doctor! Why thank you I'll check into that." "Well I just stopped by to let you know that Aiden will be just fine. His right forearm and tibia are both clean breaks and have been set and should heal just fine. He has a minor concussion which should right itself in a couple of days. I think we'll be able to release him Monday to go back to school if he feels up to it,in a wheelchair though." "Oh but who will watch out for him at school?" "That will be my responsibility. He is MY boyfriend after all."
