Mrs Humbolt was at her desk and I asked to make an appointment to see the Dean. "If you'll hold on for just a moment Mr Sawyer,I'll see if he is avaiable right now." She went into his office and came back out a few moments later. "Dean Evans will see you now Mr Sawyer." I walked into the office and Dean Evans was sitting behind his desk. "Have a seat Mr Sawyer. What can I do for you today?" I explained to him what I had in mind to do. "I see no reason not to if the interest is there, and I can go ahead and authorize it on my own authority. Now just who might be the benefactor of this plan?" "I will have to take the blame for that sir. It is coming out of my pocket." "I see. Simple question, why?" "From what I've been told, these guys over at Pemberton like rubbing it in that most of our students don't have the wherewithal that they do. I can afford this and think that having some of our own people there can only help the team." "Well I can't fault your logic there. Now there are three companies that are on our approved list of carriers and I'll have Mrs Humbolt give you that list with all of the contact information. Good luck with this and your meet Mr Sawyer. I might just make the trip over myself." "Thank you sir. I'll look over that list tonight." I shook his hand and left the office and waited the few seconds it took Mrs Humbolt to print out the list. I headed back to the dorm and when I got there I booted up my computer and investigated the three companies. They were all within just a few dollars of each other and their motorcoaches were roughly comparable,as were their Better Business Bureau ratings. They all had a two day advance notice policy. I wrote up an announcement and posted it to the schools electronic bulletin board with my email for questions and sign up. After that I didn't give it much more thought for the evening. I had supper with Karl and Pete and hit my books for a while. 11 rolled around and I got my usual message from Karl and sent back my usual maessage. 5:45 rolled around and it was into the jogging stuff and out the door. Gordon was waiting and we picked Karl up as we swung past his dorm. We all completed our laps and went and showered and changed, had breakfast and were off to class. The day went as expected and I hit the gym for an hour before heading back to the dorm. I booted my computer just to check in and I had close to a hundred emails with the subject listed as bus trip. I sat down and started going through them. A few were questions that I quickly answered but most were signing up for seats. By the time I got to the end I had 75 people signed up, and this was just the first day. What would I get once word got around? Eventually I went down for supper with Karl and told him about the response. "Damn I didn't think there were that many who would be interested." "I'm just hoping they are interested and not just looking to get off campus for a change." "There is that I suppose. Still I'm betting if they sign up to go they'll be at the meet." "I sure hope so or the Dean won't let me be getting away with it again even if there is a real interest by some." "How many to a bus?" "80 and I already have 75 signed up,probably more by the time I get back." "This is going to end up costing you a pretty penny love if you have to get more than one bus." "Yeah I figured two at the most, but if it comes to more than that so be it. We can always use the support." "Still an awful lot for you to shell out especially if you aren't even competeing." "Like I said before, then I get to lead the cheering squad." "I think the team will certainly appreciate it if nothing else." "I hope to hell they do. Go for a walk?" "Sure, but only a short one I've got a load of work to do." The evenings were still mild enough that it was a pleasant walk about the campus. We drifted toward Frat road for a change. We hit the house for a few minutes and I told them about the bus in case anybody was interested. We soon enough headed back to the dorms and found our place for a good night kiss and then we both headed inside. I had some reading to do,but before I did I checked the email again. Just in the last couple of hours another 15 people had signed up. This was, I feared, going to get out of hand. 11pm and the usual texts were exchanged. 5:45 and we were out for our daily jog and then back to the routine on this Thursday. After class I was again over to the gym to practice. Luckily there were a few guys around that could spot me in accordance with the coaches directive. "Looking good Dennis!" It was Gary, looking rather stiff and then I remembered he had the first cast put on a few days ago. "Thanks Gary. Damn you look uncomfortable." "Yeah it's kinda hard to bend with this thing on." "You going to take advantage of the free bus to come watch us at Pemberton?" "First I've heard of it,but yeah if there's a bus I'll be going. Who do I see?" "Between you amd me,you see me. I don't want that getting around though." "Why the hell not? I'd think people would like to know who to thank." "I'm sure there are some who would, but there are bound to be a couple out there who would try to take advantage of my good nature as well." "True enough, I can think of two off the top of my head." "Buses are going to leave from the Cochran parking lot at 7am that Saturday and come back the same day." "I'll be there and thanks for the heads up. Should I spread the word?" "Sure, but it's up on the electronic bulletin board so just refer folks there." "Sounds like a plan. You going back to work or calling it a day?" "Calling it a day for now. Going to whirlpool and then get out of here. I have school work to do as well." "Then I'll catch you later." "Be careful out there Gary and if you need anything let me know please." "I will." Gary took off for parts unknown while I went and hit the whirlpool. On my way back to the dorm,I ran into Gordon and Aiden. "Hey you guys going to take advantage of the bus?" "Yeah I saw that and wondered if that was you. It might be a bit difficult to get Aiden on the bus. I was thinking about following it in Aidens car,but I don't have a license." "Maybe you can get Karl to drive for you?" "You think he would?" "Either him or Pete,if he and Susan are going." "If Pete is going with his girl, I don't think he'd want us tagging along." "Probably not Aiden, but I'm sure there is somebody who would be willing to drive you. Want me to ask Karl tonight?" "If you would please." "Ok then. I've already got damn near a hundred people signed up and I haven't checked my email yet today." "This is going to cost you an arm and a leg Den,and you aren't even sure that you'll be competeing." "A chance I'm willing to take. From what I've been told, I just don't like Pembertons attitude. They seem to like putting on airs because they are so much more expensive a school than we are. This is just a little get even which should help the team out as well." "Sure as hell hope this doesn't blow up in your face." "Me three Gordon. Hey if it does I don't do it again, but if it works,or just puts the Pemberton guys in their place it will be worth it. Now I'd better go check my email." I made my way to my room and booted the computer to find another 20-odd responses. By the time I was done processing those I was up to 127 people. Definately 2 buses,if not 3. I even recognized a few of the names as people I shared classes with and a couple of the guys from the frat as well. This was going to end up being quite a diverse group and I hoped they could all get along on the 3 hour trip. Soon enough it was supper time and I meant Karl. "Gordon and Aiden were wondering if you'd drive them to Pemberton for the meet? It would be kinda difficult to get Aiden on the bus." "Yeah I can do that I suppose, though I was going to take the bus myself. You know how I hate driving alone, but I guess having the company will be good to." "Thanks,I didn't really want to ask Pete to take them now that he has a girlfriend." "Are they going?" "No idea." We ate our supper and took a short walk together and had our kiss before we both got back to our rooms and back to work. Part of staying on the team was keeping our grades up and I wasn't about to fall victim to that particular trap. The usual 11pm messages were exchanged and Friday morning rolled around as it had a habit of doing. Jogging and then showering and breakfast and then off to class as usual. After class would find me at the gym again but for my more usual workout rather than any gymnastics. Karl showed up a little later and joined me and we ended with a few laps in the pool and a soak in the whirlpool. We were changing up when I heard somebody talking around the corner from us. "Yeah somebody is trying to bolster the gymnastics squad. Like they ever did anything to help the school out. Everybody knows it's the football and basketball teams that bring the alumni and their money in." Karl must have seen something to read my mood. "Let it go Den." "I know I should." Then I heard a very familiar voice from around the corner. It was our team captain Gary. "You know what Jack? I looked it up the other day. The gymnastics squad over the years has brought home more state and regional championships than either the football or basketball teams. So I don't think we need to wrry about being bolstered up. Somebody just got it in their head to show the Pemberton guys that just because we don't have their money that we aren't just as good as they are. By the way our record with them is 47 to 3 over the years." And that seemed to put an end to the conversation. "Guess I didn't need to get into it afterall."
