We both headed for the locker room and I changed into my bathing suit and headed out to do a few laps. When I got back to the locker room I headed for the whirlpool and the guy was still there and he had a strange look on his face when I settled in. "Something wrong?" "I heard something in the locker room...." I just knew what he had heard and I waited for him to ask. "Somebody said that.....that you're gay." "I won't deny it." "But......" "Before you go there let me. I work out, I jog, I do gymnastics. I watch pro football and enjoy it, hell I'll even go out and play in a touch or flag game every now and then. I like most things that guys like, except for girls. If that offends you I'm sorry." "Truth to tell, I've never known anyone who was gay before. I know what I see on tv and in the movies." "Largely stereotyped. I'll admit there are some around who do behave just that way,but by in large you couldn't tell a gay guy from a straight one just by looking at them." "That roomie of yours?" "Straight as an arrow and he doesn't treat me any differently than he does anybody else." "Than how do you know about the bruises?" "Just because he was on the football team didn't mean he didn't have to take gym class." "Does the rest of the gymnastics team know?" "Yeah I told them before I was selected as an alternate, actually before that first meet that was held here. One of the guys on the opposing team was from my high school. I thought it would be better for me to drop that bomb ahead of time so it wasn't screwing with their heads during the meet when I was the host for the other guys. I even told them I would bow out altogether if it bothered anybody." "And nobody objected?" "Not a one of them." "I doubt like hell you could get away with that on the football team." "Probably not. I bet you'd be surprised to know that there have been some gay athletes though." "Not any who were any good I bet." "Would you call 4 gold and one silver olympic medals good?" "You're shitting me." "Do a wiki search some time and you'll find them in everything from ice dancing to football and even MMA. I was just messing around the net one night and thought I'd search it just for the hell of it. I'm betting there are a few names there that you'll recognize. Speaking of names,I never got yours." "Randy Porter, and I know yours is Dennis. So this football playing roomie of yours, anybody I ever heard of?" "Not unless you were in our conference, his name is Peter Pershing." At that point Randy just looked at me. "What?" "Peter may be my second cousin. Did his dad die not to long ago?" "Yeah last winter. Damn wouldn't that be a coincidence. You want to come by and check?" "I think I had better. I know I looked for him here last year but didn't find a trace of him." "The money just wasn't there last year. He landed a scholarship this year. Let's get changed up. Unless he's out with his girl he should be back to the room by now." We got out of the whirlpool and headed to the showers. I did notice that Randy stayed a fair distance away from me,but didn't say anything. Soon enough we were both out of the gym and heading towards my dorm. When we got there we lucked out and I just left Pete and Randy to get acquainted and headed for the dayroom. Karl showed up a while later so we could go to supper. "Isn't that the guy in your room with Pete that you have the challenge with?" "Yeah turns out he's related to Pete." "Small world. Where for supper tonight?" "Slide into the mall and hit the food court?" "Sounds ok to me." We went to my car as it was closer and I proceeded to give it an imspection before I opened the door. It was an easy trip into town and the mall was fairly quiet so we had an easy time parking. We were soon enough into the mall and had gotten our food and were sitting at a table, when I heard a voice behind me. "Hey Dennis, I hear congrats are in order." I turned around to see Paul, from Rons, standing there. "Hey Paul. Yeah I did good over the weekend. Didn't think the news had made it off campus though." "Yeah well my dad picked it up when he was doing some work. Just thought I'd say hi. Looks like I may be joining you guys on campus next year." "Hey that's great the more the merrier." "Ok you guys take it easy, I'm meeting somebody in a couple." "Later Paul." "Big change from our first meeting." "Yeah and for the better it would seem. So how did the guy do with the gymnastics challenge?" "He picked the pommel horse and got through a few moves. Said he couldn't throw a pass worth a shit when he was done. Offered to call the rest of the challenge off." "You took him up on it I hope?" "No I didn't. There were eyes there today and if I don't show up for the scrimmage I don't think I'll have any credibility. He did promise just standard stuff though. He'll be satisfied if I survive warmups and a couple of plays." "Just be damned careful out there. They don't need to be calling Dwayne up if they don't have to." "Hey if they're still short a man at the next meet,I'm going to insist that Dwayne get his shot. He's worked hard too." "Yeah I suppose. You need anything while we're out?" "No I'm good as far as I know, but I don't mind walking if you need something." "No I'm good love." We had soon finished our food and were headed back to campus, once I checked the car over again. We found our place for a goodnight kiss and I was back in my room and tending to schoolwork. 11pm came and I got my message and sent mine back. After that it was a quiet night. 5:45 and I was out for jogging with Gordon and Karl. Aiden still had a while to be in his casts. Classes on this Wenesday went about as expected and I was back to the dorm rather than over to the gym. I still needed to get my pointers from Pete. He finally showed up a little after 4 and we got down to it until Karl showed up for supper. The three of us ended up going down to the cafeteria and we were joined by Gordon and Aiden. "I need to go in for a checkup on Friday. Can any of you guys get me there and back?" "What time?" "Anytime after 4." "I've got no practice so unless I'm hurting I can take you." "Hurting from what if you don't have a practice?" "You mean you haven't heard what my roomie has gotten himself into this time?" "Oh hell. What is it this time?" "I'm going to the football scrimmage tomorrow afternoon." "Why in the hell would you do that?" "One of the footballers didn't think it took a lot of physicality to do gymnastics. I told him to put up or shut up. He did his part and tomorrow it is time for me to do my part." "Dennis, you have got to be out of your mind." "Probably, but now I have to put up or shutup." "Well good luck on that. When is the next gymnastics meet?" "Not for a couple of weeks. I may or may not be in it. Depends on how well that guys wrist heals and if the coach is going to give Dwayne his shot." "So is it another away meet?" "Nope, home game this time,so I get to sleep in my own bed. Always an advantage." "Against who this time?" "Armstrong college. Can't say as I ever heard of them though." "I can. They're largely and engineering school if memory serves, but their sports program is suppose to be top notch." "Guess I'd better check them out at some point and see what kind of record we have against them." "I think love if they are as good as Pete thinks, that you may well find yourself center floor again regardless of what you want." "Sounds like it love. I may have to 'up' my game. I'll worry about that after I get done with this football thing." "You want us there for moral support?" "Up to you guys. I'm sure Karl thinks you guys are going to have to carry me off the field. Randy said he wasn't going to call for any thing out of the ordinary though." "He had a lot of questions about you and our relationship when we were talking before. I get the feeling he knows you're gay." "Yeah somebody spilled the beans to him just before we came to see you. Hope you told him the truth and he believed you." "He seemed to believe me and of course I told him the truth. Just wonder if he'll say anything to the football team." "If he does he does and I'll deal with it." We soon finished our meals and Pete and the guys headed back upstairs while Karl and I took a bit of a walk. Eventually it started to get dark and we found a place for our good night kiss and we each retreated to our rooms. I hit the books until 11 when my phone buzzed and I got my mightly message from Karl and I sent mine back. 5:45 came along and I was out the door and found Gordon waiting for me and we headed down and did our laps. "I'll catchup to you at the scrimmage love." Gordon and I went in and got showered up and down to breakfast and got our day started. After class I got back to my room and changed into the most beat up pair of jeans I had as I fully expected to get dirty as hell at the scrimmage. I made my way over to the stadium and down to the field. The coach was there and he came over and shook my hand. "This takes a lot of guts on your part Sawyer, but I think it might just be worth it for these guys to see somebody else from another sport on their field." "Thanks coach. Randy came over and did his part and wanted to call the rest of it off,but I just felt I had to follow through." "Well I've got some shoulder pads and a helmet over here. You did think to wear a cup I hope?" "Of course. I may be crazy but I'm not stupid."
