"This vehicle was reported stolen about an huor ago by its owner Dennis Sawyer." "I'm Dennis Sawyer! Fuckin Larry! I'm going to see him hung up by his short hairs!" "Quiet! Do you have any weapons on your person? Any needles or anything else sharp?" "No sir." "Id?" "Left back pocket." The officer took out my wallet which had my pictured license and my pictured collge id as well. Just about this time another car rolled up and it was the detective who had been at the steakhouse. He quickly vouched for us and we were released. "So now with everything else you have him for filing a phony police report. Somebody better find him before I do." "Easy Mr Sawyer. That may well be just exactly what he wants. Then he has grounds for having you arrested, and likely we would never be able to prove it was him that filed the report." "Probably not. He seems to have gotten good at covering his tracks." "Somebody will catch up to him eventually Mr Sawyer. Those federal charges won't be going away anytime soon." "They may also take years to prosecute him. I hope Mr Jacobs and his bretheren can make something stick." The detective got a look on his face. "My lawyers sir, nothing more." Karl and I made our way back to campus and the detective followed us a good deal of the way until the stolen car report was canceled. "Karl get on the horn and tell your parents what's going on so they can protect themselves. I'm pretty sure the rest of my accounts are pretty well protected by the lawyers." "You better hope to hell that they are Dennis. Larry could very well render you penniless if he gets to your bank accounts." "He can only get to my checking account and that's isolated from everything else, and I only keep a couple of grand in it. But there's a branch office in town. I'll run by there in the morning and make sure." I gave Karl his kiss goodnight and made my way inside to my room and crashed out. Saturday morning after jogging I went out and checked my car and then headed to the branch office of my bank. Soon enough I was sitting with one of the bank officers. I explained the whole situation to him and asked him to check the balance. "Your current balance is zero Mr Sawyer." "So he's gotten to that as well. Can you tell me where the withdrawals were made from?" He went back to his computer and typed in a few commands. "It appears that the ATM at the mall was used sir." "Any way that can be done remotely or would he have to be physically there to do it?" "He'd have to be physically there as far as I know." Had Larry finally slipped up? That had to mean he was somewhere local and people were looking in the wrong place for him. "Please transfer $1000 from my savings account to the personal checking account. Is there anyway to flag it so there is an immediate notification to me?" "I can link it to your cell phone if you like." "Please do and then make a notation on my account that any further withdrawals from the savings account after that can only be made in person at a branch office." I got a bit of cash while I was there and then stopped by the 15th precinct and told the detectives what had happened to my account, what I had set up and I signed a waiver so they could tap my phone and maybe just maybe catch Larry in the act. I also called the lawyers and suggested that Larry may very well be in my vicinity as opposed to be back home where he had told the bail officials he would be. I made it a point to lay low for the rest of the weekend and the whole week for that matter. The following Saturday was the event with Armstrong college. As of close of business Friday there had been no word as to whether or not I had been cleared of any of the bomb charges. So Dwayne was going to get his shot tomorrow. I was up in time for my jogging with the guys and it just so happened that I ended up in the cafeteria at the same time as the team breakfast. I did make it a point to stay away from the team, but Dana made a point to come over and speak to me. "This isn't likely to be pretty without you Dennis." "So I've gathered, but there's not a damn thing I can do about it. Well except maybe lead the cheering section." "The support will be appreciated I'm sure." "Did you or coach check and make sure the vault is set right?" "Triple checked. See you at the center in a couple of hours." "I'll be there and I'll bring friends." Dana went back to the team and they finished their food. A little later I caught up with Aiden and Gordon and a few others and we made our way over to the event venue. I was glad to see a good number of people waiting to get into the hall. There was a smattering of Aremstrong colors in the mix,but our folks seemed to vastly outnumber theirs. Well it was a home event so that was only to be expected. With only 5 minutes until the doors opened, two buses pulled up and disgorged Armstrong students. We still had "home court advantage" but it was good to see that their team had support as well. Then again word may have gotten around after the Pemberton meet. WE were eventually let in and the opening ceremonies were observed. Both teams got a good welcome when they took the floor. More than one of our team scanned the hall until their eyes landed on me. I just gave them all a thumbs up. Dwayne however still looked to me. I simply mouthed the words "You can do this". He nodded as a smile spread across his face. I watched as many of the routines as I could but paid particular attention to Dwayne. As when I competed, I didn't look to the scoreboard. I watched closely and did my own scoring. Dwayne looked to me that he was outdoing his opposite number in every excercise. Dwaynes last routine was the floor excercise. As with most of us it was his weakest routine, simply because it was the longest of the routines and the most draining. The other guy started his routine and he was doing every move as cleanly as I had ever seen them done, right up until his last tumbling run. I don't know exactly what happened but it looked like the guys wrist gave out and he didn't get enough momentum for the final somersault and he landed it short and stepped out of the landing. He finished his routine, but that one step had opened the door for Dwayne. Everyone else had completed their routines so all eyes were literally on Dwayne, and his eyes once again found me. I stood for a second and made the "take a deep breath" kind of move. I saw that he did and then he nodded to me. I sat and waited to see just what he had left. His opening moves were all done cleanly and he went into his first tumbling run which ended in a double somersault with a twist which he landed solidly. He proceeded to work through some indiviual floor moves up to a handstand which he held for just the right amount of time. Getting out of the handstand set him up for his second tumbling run, which again was solid with a solid landing at the end. He worked through the rest of his routine without any flaws that I could see and set up for his last tumbling run. If he could nail this I thought he would be homefree. Everything went into slow motion. I watched with a most critical eye, every step, every hand plant as the entire complex was dead silent. His "flair" work from the floor was crisp and concise and went smoothly into is last tumbling run. He looked a bit wobbly to me near the end of that tumble but he still managed to land it solidly. He did his final three moves of the routine and the place went wild as anybody who knew anything about the sport could tell that Dwayne had likely just had the run of his life. Things quieted down as we all waited for the scoring to be posted. Now was the time I looked at the scoreboard and it looked like it was going to be damn close for the meet. As it stood at the moment, one of he guys from Armstrong had the overall best meet. Dwaynes score was finally posted and he had beaten the other guy in this routine by almost 3 points. I knew even before the tally was posted that we had taken the meet by a single point. When it was posted the place went nuts and we all started to flood the floor, me right along with them. I fought my way over to Dwayne. "I told you could do it." "That you did. Thanks for the moral support today." "What are teammates for?" We all had to settle down so the awards ceremony could tkae place and then the place emptied out pretty quickly. I went back in the direction of the dorm with Karl and the others and stopped to pick up my snail mail, most of which had been forwarded from home by Mrs Ohanlon. Right on top of the pile was a letter from the local police department. I opened it and found that I had been found innocent of any involvement in the bomb threat from three weeks ago and that a copy had been sent to the school as well. It was dated the day before. I could have competed in the meet after all. I was just as glad I hadn't known, otherwise Dwayne may have never known he had it in him. At that point my phone started vibrating as I had turned the ringer off during the competition. I took it out and there was an IM for me. "Are you trying to make a withdrawal from your checking account?" It also gave the location as the local mall.
