It's been about a month since Jaiden and I applied to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. I went by the Post Office to pick up any mail that was in our mail boxes. There were two letters from LECOM: one for me and one for Jaiden. I didn't open mine because I wanted to wait for Jaiden. Jaiden came in around 2 pm as usual and I handed Jaiden his letter. He said "this came pretty quickly." I'm a little scared to open it. Let's open them together." I started reading my letter: "Dear Mr. Riley, the professors and administrators with whom you spoke during your visit to the LECOM were extremely impressed with you and with Mr. Reynolds. As a result of your positive interviews, LECOM is waiving the candidate interview normally required before a decision of acceptance is granted. LECOM is proud to advise you that you and Mr. Reynolds have been accepted and approved to enter Fall Semester on September 03, 2020. Congratulations on your acceptance at LECOM! Sincerely, John D. Ferris, D.O., President and CEO Jaiden, "what does your letter say?" He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, "We were both accepted. We can attend medical school together." "Becky, this is Jaiden, I need to talk to Mom right quick if she is available." Sure thing, hon. Your voice seems emotional, are you ok?" "Yes, mam, I'll tell Mom what's up and let her tell you." " Jaiden, son, is everything OK? "Yes, mam, I just needed to tell you that Peyton and I got a letter from LECOM today." "And?" We are not going to get a formal interview." "Jaiden, what reason did they give for not offering you the formal interview? "Mom. It seems to stem from our talking to professors and administrators when Peyton and I visited the college a month or so ago." President Ferris said that the administrators and professors were so impressed with Peyton and I that they were waiving the formal interview process and that Peyton and I were accepted for admission beginning with the 2020 Fall semester" I have never heard Mom cry so hard since finding out that Dad had been killed in the plane crash. "Mom, are you ok?" "Yes, son, Becky, Carol and Angie are in my office to make sure everything is ok." Mom calmed down enough to tell the ladies what was going on. Now they are all balling their eyes out." "Jaiden, I am so proud of you and Peyton. To know that you will be so close to home, I can't say what I am feeling right now. It's a happiness I've never felt. We will ALL celebrate when you come home at the end of the semester...and Peyton better come with you." `Yes, mam, I'll try to make sure he does." "Before you talk to Mom Phyllis, give Peyton time to call home." I will, son, I promise. I love you and Peyton to the moon and back." "I love you the same, Mom. I'll talk to you this weekend." "OK, son, have a good week." Peyton is waiting until his Dad gets home before he calls his parents. In the meanwhile, we went to dinner at Tony's like we always do to celebrate. When we walked in, we had blood-shot, watery eyes and that alarmed Tony. We got our usual table in the nook in the back. Tony stopped what he was doing and came and sat at the table with us. "OK, guys, I don't like what I am seeing. What's up?" I really let loose at that point and handed Tony the letter from LECOM. He read the letter and then just stared at us with his chin on the floor. He couldn't say anything right then, so he just let out a sad, loud wail. Tony stood up and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your undivided attention for just a minute." The restaurant went so silent you could hear a pin hit the floor. "I would like to congratulate Jaiden and Peyton on their acceptance to medical school beginning with the Fall Semester in September. The place went wild and everybody in the place came by to hug, shake hands, and congratulate us before they left. All Peyton and I could say was "WOW!" When we got back to the apartment, Peyton called his parents and played with their minds. He was balling when his mother answered the phone. Peyton asked her to get his Dad on the phone with them. She was worried at the sound of Peyton balling and I heard her say, "JIM, GET ON THE PHONE NOW!" Dad immediately picked up the phone and said, "Peyton, what has you so upset?" Dad, Mom, I'm not upset, I am more than overjoyed." "And?" "I got a letter from President Ferris at LECOM. They are not going to give Jaiden and I a formal interview." "And you are overjoyed at that?" "No sir, I am overjoyed at the fact that the professors and administrators were so impressed with Jaiden and I when we visited the campus and spoke with them that they waived the formal interview and admitted us into medical school at LECOM starting Fall semester 2020!" Dad Riley and Mom Riley let out a yell and started crying. Jenny apparently was visiting with them and ran into the room asking "Mom, Dad, what is wrong" Mom Riley just handed Jenny the phone. "Hello, this is Jenny, to whom am I speaking?" Peyton said "Jenny, this is Peyton." "Little bro, what is it that has everybody crying?" "Sis, Jaiden and I got a letter from the president of LECOM today. We are starting medical school in September. We visited the campus last month and spoke with administrators and professors and they were so impressed with Jaiden and I that they admitted us to the medical school that day." Jenny let out a yell and started crying like Mom and Dad. "Peyton, does that mean you and Jaiden can continue to be together?" "Yes, it does." Jenny cried even harder. I am so proud of you, you haven't made my day, you have made my year. Is Jaiden there?" "He's standing right here." "Well, put his cute butt on the phone1" "Jaiden, Jenny wants to talk with you." "Hello, Jenny." "Jaiden, I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of you and how much I and the family love you. I am so ecstatic that I can't find the words to say. You know the family; we are definitely going to celebrate this." "I know we are, and I figure Mom and Mom will have it planned out by noon tomorrow." "You are probably right in that thought." Sure enough, Mom called me the next night around 8 pm. "Peyton, can you get Jaiden to come into the room and put your phone on speaker mode? "He's already standing here and I just cut on the speaker phone." "First and foremost, I love you two more that you could ever imagine." "Jaiden spoke up and said, "we love you the same." Mom got a bit nostalgic with that comment. I talked to Peggy last night and this morning." Jaiden giggled and said "I new Mom would get with your Mom and have everything planned out by this morning. You've just gotta love my mom." Mom laughed at Jaiden's comment. "Young men, here is the Momma's celebration plan. Peggy and all of Jaiden's grandparent will be flying down the weekend after Spring semester ends. Oh, yes, I almost forgot: Jaiden is flying down with them. We sent Peggy a check to cover your flight home. Everybody is going to meet up at the house to meet up with Grandma Jenny, Papa, Granny and Grampy. Then we'll pile into a big limousine and head to Noja. There won't be room for you and Jaiden in the limo, so we got you your own limo. You'll have it for the night so you and Jaiden can tour mobile and have some alone time that you haven't had in a long time. We've booked you into the Battle House Renaissance Hotel and Spa. The morning after you check in, after you have had a gourmet breakfast, both of you will go down to the spa for a one-hour massage. You will be together in the same room for your massage. Your car will be in the parking lot by the time you awaken." There is a lunch reservation for you and Jaiden at the Thai Diner. Dinner reservations have been made at Dauphin's on the Bay. Everything has been paid for so you don't have to worry about anything all week. The rest of the plan is written down and will be in the glove box of your car. Your Dad, I, and Peggy want you both to have the best, most relaxing, romantic week possible because when medical school starts, you will barely have time to go to the bathroom and you will have nights where you have to find an empty room in the hospital to get a few hours of sleep. "Mom, thank you so much. I could not have been blessed with more loving and accepting parents." "Son, you and Jaiden get some much-deserved rest and alone time together and I'll talk to you the first of the week." Jaiden checked us into the hotel and found that our luggage and clothes were waiting on us. We were astounded to find that our parents had booked us into a luxurious suite. Jaiden called his mom at home and talked to her for some time. When he hung up, he looked at me and said, "You have no idea how much my Mom loves you, Peyton. Even I had no idea her love for you runs so deep. We walked out on the balcony and sat holding each other and silently watching ships coming into the bay. Our love, our relationship, was meant to be. It just feels so right.
