"Pete, this is Jaiden; the guys and I
wondered if you and Allison would like to bring the children over to play while
we sit on the deck and catch up on everything that happened while we were in
Memphis; Don and Jay are coming over,
and Richard and Sally will be here with Seth and their two sons."
"Hang on a minute, Jaiden. Allison, Jaiden is inviting us over for Dale's
knishes, coffee, and conversation; would you like to go? He said the children could play with his
children while we sit on the deck and play catch up on what happened while they
were gone." "Pete, I'd love to have some
of Dale's knishes and coffee, so I'd like to go. But, first, let's get the children to potty so
they won't have an accident while we are there."
"Jaiden, when would be a good time to
show up?" "Any time y'all get here,
Pete. Don and Jay are on the way, and Richard, Sally, their
sons, and Seth are already here. Give us
time to take the babies to the bathroom, and we'll be on the way." "Sounds good, Pete; see you guys shortly."
"Dale, Don, and
Jay are on the way, and Pete, Allison, and the children will be here shortly." "OK, thanks, Jaiden; I'll get the knishes in
the oven and make two pots of coffee.
Don't tell Jay it's a new blend; wait and see if he notices and says
something first." "Sounds like a plan to
me, Dale. Don loved the coffee before,
and the new coffee is even better, so it will be interesting to see if he
notices the difference."
The doorbell
rang, and Jaiden went to the door and welcomed Don and Jay inside the house. All the children went running to see Don and
Jay, who were surprised at how the children had grown.
"So, Jaiden,
Peyton, how have y'all been since we saw you in Orange Beach?" "Busy and stressed closing out at St. Jude's,
coming back and staffing the practice, and getting the
children back in one, safe, unhurt group.
We thought they'd have a hard time on the ride back, but we were surprised
at every turn. We took time to stop at
children's events and let them stretch their legs and run. They love to play in mountain streams, wild
animal parks, and zoos. And you know
Nathan Robert loves pretty women, so we had to watch him when we stopped at a
park and women were around. I don't know
how many times I heard, "Daddy, she cute!"
The women got a kick out of him and Charles Logan. And the
boys were right – they were cute. Both
those little boys can spot a beautiful woman a mile away."
"You guys better watch those boys, or you'll be grandparents way
before you are ready." "Jay, that's what
scares us. Can you imagine what it would
be like for one of the boys to get a girl pregnant and her to have triplets, or
even worse, three of the boys getting their girlfriends pregnant and each girl
having triplets. That would add twelve
people to the household, with 14 in residence.
They don't make enough antidepressants and anxiety medications for a
house that full of children and grandchildren."
"Aw hell, Jaiden, you know you would love it!" "Don, remember, you're their uncle - and they
will want to spend time in the summer with their uncle." "Oh hell, I forgot about that." "Yeah, right!"
"And you
know, Pete's and Allison's also love you and Jay, and they will want to be
there when my children and grandchildren are spending a few weeks with you." "That may be a little hard when the time
comes, Jaiden; I didn't tell you that Jay and I are planning on moving to Maui,
Hawaii when we get ready to retire." "Go
ahead and shirk your responsibilities as an uncle. We can always fly them over to see you." "You wouldn't, would you?" "Damn straight we would; wouldn't we, Pete? "Yep, sure would, Jaiden. And while the children are in Maui with Don
and Jay, we'd move and not tell anybody where we went." "Now, Pete, that's mean." "Don, you know my wife won't let those
children go more than a hundred miles without her with them. And if she wasn't there, she would make me go
with them." "Allison, have I told you
lately that I love you?" "Not lately,
Don, but I know you do!" Everybody
howled when Allison said that.
"You know, I
forgot how nice it is in Erie with the wind blowing in off the lake; it makes
the nights here so comfortable." "Jaiden,
don't forget that same wind blows in during the winter and brings us a lot of
snow." "Yea, I know, but I found out about
a liquid in Memphis that I can use that won't let snow accumulate on the
sidewalk, driveway, or the steps out front.
You spray it on the cement with a tank sprayer and then go inside and marvel
at how the snow never accumulates." "I'm
gonna have to check into that. I have a snow blower, but it is hard as crap
to crank it if the engine gets cold. I
had an electric one, but the poser went out, and I had to shovel the
walkways. That ain't
happening again!"
Charley
spoke up and said, "Don, keep a couple of propane tanks around and use a weed
torch to get rid of the snow pronto. Strap
the tank on a dolly, and away you go; simple and easy." "Leave it to you to have the simplest way,
Charley." "Don, I'm just lazy when it
comes to manual labor at home." "Charlie,
you're a mess!" "Yeah, Dad tells me that
all the time, Don." "Charlie has a
point, Don; more men above the age of 40 die while shoveling snow; it puts a
lot of stress on the lugs and heart." "I
know, and I like Charley's idea about using a propane weed torch to get rid of
the snow; I think I'll try that this winter.
Let me know if the spray deterrent works OK up here." "Wil do, Don; it's a lot less work,"
"Are the
ladies still keeping the children?" "They
are, Jay, and they now live right around the corner. We had houses constructed for Ginny and
Granny, and across the street, we had one built for Richard and Sally. But, of course, we didn't tell them we had
done that until we got back to Erie." "I
bet they were surprised," "That would be
an understatement; they were upset because they got back and went to their old
homes only to discover their furniture had not arrived from Memphis. We told them they could stay here until their
furniture arrived, and then we drove like we were coming home and turned off
and saw three new homes. We decided to
stop and look at the houses, but they had furniture inside. Peyton and Dale walked into two places and
almost got their butts kicked by Ginny and Granny for not knocking on the door
and waiting for the owners to answer the knock.
They went inside anyway, and Granny and Ginny were right behind them. Ginny's was the first house, and Granny's was
the second, and when they saw their furniture, they lost it. I handed them the keys to their new homes and
said, "Welcome home to Erie!"
When we went
inside Granny's house, her son and daughter-in-law were hiding in the bathroom
in the master bedroom. When Granny
opened that door, we told them to meet their church members who had helped us
get the houses built and decorated. Talk
about being surprised. That Sunday, we were
invited to a dinner at their church to honor us for being so good to the
ladies; never mind that they raised us too."
"What about
Richard, Jaiden?" "We walked over to his
house, and it was locked up tight as a drum.
Everything was decorated the way Sally had always dreamed of having her
first home, except the house was much bigger.
She wanted to know how we knew what she wanted for her dream bedroom, so
Peyton told her to open the door to the master bath, and the answer would be
inside. She opened the door to find her
mother and dad standing there. They had
been in on the surprise the whole time and never said a word to Sally or
Richard. Sally bawled when she saw her
parents. Richard lost it big time when
we looked at the other bedrooms with a bath between the rooms when Dad and Seth
were standing in the doorway. Peyton
looked in the back deck door and told Richard to take a look
inside, that he loved the way it was decorated.
When Richard looked inside, the den had all of Sally's apartment furniture
in it. Both cried at that point."
"You guys
really went out of your way to surprise everybody, didn't you." "Don, we did our best. You know how our family is. Ginny has been a part of my family for thirty
years, and she deserved what she got – she earned it. Granny's husband retired from his church so
he and she could go to Memphis with us.
They literally gave up their lives to help us, so, like Ginny and Gampy,
Granny and the Reverend more than earned their reward." "Jaiden, you, Peyton, Dale, and Charley are
just damned good guys!" "Don, we try to
be. We had the means to do what we did,
so we did it, and it was all paid for off the interest from our investments."
"Well, let
me tell you about Mariposas Verdes so far.
The program got thirty young boys the first week from homes where they caught
hell for being gay. A few parents had a
problem with their sons being in the program, but after I explained how it
would benefit the boys, they understood my point of view - very well, if you know what I mean." "Don, that is hilarious. We knew you would take care of any dissenters
to the program." "Well, that isn't all,
the parents have to participate in the counseling with their sons, and if they
give the counselors any guff, the counselors call me, and I re-explain `my
views.'" "Too funny, but thanks for your
help." "You guys bust your butts to help
the children in this community; it's the least I can do to help you." "We appreciate the support, Don."
"Jaiden, let
me ask you about something I would like to do:
When a child abuse case is reported to me, would you, Peyton, and
Richard mind examining the children for signs of abuse and let me know what y'all
find." Richard looked at Don and said, "That
a dumbass question; after what you did for Seth and me, and all the other boys
Jaiden and Peyton helped, you know we'll do that for you. If somebody has a problem with me doing that,
my ass is a nice, white, and cracked down the middle, and they can kiss it!" "Richard, somehow, I think you would say that
to somebody that didn't like you cooperating with my court." "In a heartbeat, Don."
"Don Peyton
and I agree with Richard. Have the police
officers call Ashley at the office, and we will see them immediately. If we're in surgery, we'll see them as soon
as we get out of the operating room." "Richard,
are you going to do pediatric surgery?" "Don, I will be doing pediatric surgery,
but I'll try to confine it to general surgery."
"Good; that makes me feel very fortunate to have y'all on the program to
stop child abuse."
The doorbell
rang, and Peyton wondered who it could be.
He answered the door, and Seth had gotten home and came by to see
everybody. When Seth walked onto the deck,
Don's and Jay's mouths hit the floor. "Seth,
I can't believe you! You have grown into
a handsome young man. How are you doing?" "Thanks to you, Don, I have gotten over my
injuries, but there are still some things I am careful about. I have an amazing family now, with
unbelievable parents. I finished high
school two years early with a 4.0 GPA. I
am in Veterinary college at the University of Florida, and I have just finished
my first year. I took the summer off to
relax for a bit and to see and help Sally and Richard with the boys." "I heard you are a pretty good cook; what do
you think?" "I'm not a pretty good cook,
Don; I'm a damned good cook!" "That's
what I heard, Seth; I just wanted to see what you would say."
"When are
you going back to Orange Beach?" "I
thought I would go back on Saturday afternoon; I'd like to spend some time with
Mom and Dad before going back to Gainsville. After that, I fly into Jacksonville and then
drive to the university. Peyton gave me
his old car, and it is still nice, so I drive that at school." "Great, Seth, work hard and be the best." "I work hard, Jay, and I'm already the best. Since many opportunities are opening up on the east coast for marine medicine and
biodiversity, I'm looking to stay in the east after I graduate and do an
internship and residency-type program on this side of the country." "That sounds awesome; maybe something will
open up with the sea life in the great lakes, and you can locate here in Erie." "That would be awesome; I could watch little
Seth and Robert grow up without missing too much in their lives. Then there is the added benefit of being near
Richard and Sally."
"Seth, Sally,
and I would love to have you in the area, but don't feel like you have to be
close by; make a life for yourself and Jessie, a life where you can be happy." "I will, Richard, but I need to be near you
to be truly happy. We've been through so
much together, and you understand me better than anybody – except maybe for
Sally and Jenny."
"Seth, are
you and Jenny tight together?" "Unbelievably,
Don. She has taught me how to punk
Peyton, which is so much fun. And when I
get Dad in on it with me, it gets entertaining." "Seth, is Dad or Mom?" "A little of both, Peyton." "That's what I thought. I thought Jenny could do no wrong, but you
have her beat in that category." "Yeah,
it's nice. If you mess with me, you mess
with Mom." Seth started laughing when he
said that to Peyton. Peyton was hilarious
having to admit Seth was telling the truth."
Sally said, "Richard,
I hate to break up the conversation, but we need to get the boys home, bath
them off, feed them, and put them to bed for the night." "Sally, it was so good to see you and
Richard. I am beyond happy that he and
Seth are doing so well, and those boys of yours and Richard's are really handsome." "Thank
you, Don; it was good to see you and Jay too."
"Wait, guys! Get the children inside quickly." "What's wrong, Jaiden?" "Take a whiff, Peyton; it's something I
taught you in Abingdon." "Oh, damn! Charley, Dale, and Seth get the children
inside fast. That smell is a bear in the
field behind the fence." All the guys ran into the yard, grabbed a
child, and ran inside. "That does
it! I'm going to get a shotgun and some
buckshot tomorrow; I never dreamed we'd have that problem here." "Jaiden, are you sure it's a bear." "No question about it, Don. Since the children were in the yard, watch
the fence; that bear will come over the fence in just a minute."
The adults
watched the backyard, and as Jaiden said, the bear went over the fence wall and
into the backyard. Don said, "To hell
with this; I'm going to get this taken care of right now." Don took his phone out and called the Police
Department and had several cars dispatched to Jaiden's and Peyton's to take
care of the bear. Two game wardens
pulled in right behind them as the patrol cars pulled into the driveway. The game wardens got out of their trucks with
two rifles loaded with darts. They went
into the house through the garage and to the French doors at the deck. Both wardens walked onto the balcony, took
aim, and shot two darts into the bear.
It didn't take but a second, and he was fast asleep. The officers loaded the bear into the back
of the game warden's truck. He was
relocated to the other side of the mountain, but the game wardens warned that
if they couldn't find a food source where they were to be released, there was a
chance he might return.
"Dr.
Riley-Reynolds, you need a rifle in case he returns. It is technically against the law to kill a
bear out of season, but do what you have to do if your
children are outside. If someone tries
to give you a problem, a judge would probably take care of that in quick order." Don
didn't say a word; he just stood there with a wry grin.
"I don't
want a firearm in the house around the children, so I'll get a rifle and a very
secure gun safe. I'll keep the gun
unloaded and in the gun safe, and I'll get another
smaller safe to keep the ammo in, and it will be put away in my bedroom where
the children can't get near it." Don
told Jaiden he was thinking with a clear head and doing what he needed to do to
take care of the babies. He would deal
with anybody who had anything to say about it."
With the
bear down and taken across the mountain, Richard and Sally walked their sons home along with Seth.
They called Peyton as soon as they were in the house,
Jaiden
called his mother and told her what had happened, and she was shocked at the
news; she never thought Jaiden and Peyton would have a bear problem in Erie. "Jaiden, there are several rifles here at the
house, and I have at least three 357 magnum pistols; you are welcome to take
one of the rifles and pistols to have at your house." "Mom, it's a seven hours
drive for me to get them or for you to bring them, so I think I'll just get
them locally. " "Nonsense, Jaiden; tomorrow, I'll call Joe at
the armory and see what we need to do to send them to you. He has the federal license required to ship
firearms." "Thanks, Mom; call me on my
cell phone, and I'll answer it even if I'm with a patient." "OK, son, I'll do that in the morning."
"Joe, this
is Peggy Reynolds; how are you tonight."
"I'm doing well, Peggy; how about you, and what has you calling me
tonight?" "Jaiden had some guests at his
house in Erie and his brother and sister-in-law and their children, plus his
ten and a lawyer friend's five. He
smelled a bear and got the children inside just before a bear jumped the fence
into his yard. I have a rifle and a 357
I'd like to send him; can you package and mail them to Jaiden?" "Peggy, I'd be happy to do that for you. I'm at the armory now if you want to bring
the firearms to me. I'll go ahead and
get them boxed up and take them to UPS tonight.
They'll go out tomorrow morning and be at Jaiden's by nine am the next
day."
"Joe, let me
get the firearms into the car, and I'll be on my way." "OK, Peggy, see you shortly."
Peggy got
the rifle and pistol to Joe, and he boxed them up as soon as she got to the
armory. Joe called UPS to let them know
he was bringing them to the dock to be shipped, and his buddy told him to stay
at the armory and that they had a driver in the area. Ten minutes later, the UPS driver pulled into
the parking lot. The driver told Joe the
boss said to tell him that they held a flight out of Abington. As soon as he could get the packages to the
airport, they would go out that night and be delivered first thing the following
day.
Jaiden, this
is Mom; Joe worked a miracle. The rifle
and pistol will be delivered to your office first thing tomorrow morning, so
let the ladies in the office know to expect them." "Thanks, Mom; I'll let Ashley know first
thing in the morning, and I'll call or have Ashley call to let you know they
arrived." "Good, son; take care of my 12
grandbabies!" "Mom, we only have 10
children in the house." "Ten in your
house, yes. However, there are two more
around the corner from you that I count as mine too." "Richard
and Sally will get a kick out of hearing that; I'll tell them you said that." "OK, son, have a good night, and keep those
babies safe." "Yes, Mam, have a good
night. Hold on a sec before you go; "Nite nite Gam-ma." "Jaiden, what a fantastic way to end the
call; give them a hug and a kiss for me."
"Will do, Mom; good night."
"Guys, come
here just a minute; Grandma said to give you a hug and kiss for her. So when Jaiden did
what his mother asked him to do, the children were giggly at the hugs and
kisses from Grandma. OK, let's go to the
bedroom and get ready to go nite-nite. So the children took
off for their bedroom. When Jaiden got
upstairs, they were as naked as a jaybird – they wanted to play in the rain in
the bathroom, so Jaiden called Peyton up, and they bathed the boys and then put
them to bed.
Peyton asked
Jaiden what his mother had said when they returned to the den. "Peyton,
I don't know how Mom did it, but she got Joe to send us a rifle and a 357. They'll be delivered to the office at nine in
the morning." "Jaiden, the last plane
flew out before that time, didn't it?" "It
was supposed to, but the UPS manager is a friend of Joe's, and he held the
plane until a driver in the area could get the packages and get them to the
airport." "Jaiden, is there anything
your mother can't do?" "Probably not,
Peyton, especially if she sets her mind to get something done."
"Did you
call your parents and tell them what happened?"
"Of course, I did, but Mom had already talked to Seth, and he told her
all about it. She said it really excited
Seth." "I imagine so; it excited me too!" "From the looks of the front of your pants,
you didn't get too excited." "Sweetheart,
a bear doesn't get me excited that way, but you, on the other hand..." "Are you saying you're
game, Jaiden?" "No, the bear was game; I'm
horny!"
"Well, let's
go to bed, and I'll take care of that problem for you before we go to sleep." Jaiden didn't say a word; he turned and
quickly walked to his bedroom with Peyton right behind him. An hour later, they were pretty
relaxed and fast asleep.
The
following day, Jaiden and Peyton got up, showered, and started breakfast for
the children. Ginny and Granny would be
there shortly and would feed the children the food their dads had prepared. Jaiden noticed they drive up in Granny's car
when they usually walked to the house. "Granny,
y'all usually walk to the house, was there something wrong that made you have to
drive here?" "Yes, Jaiden, we saw
Richard leaving for the hospital, and he told us what happened last night. Unfortunately, we've got enough meat on our
bones that we might have been appetizing to a bear, and we weren't going to be
a gourmet meal for any bear." "I don't
think there is another bear in the area right now." "We don't care; one bear in the area means
there is probably a momma or daddy bear somewhere around looking for food. "Well, Mom sent us a rifle and a pistol, and
it's supposed to be delivered to the office this morning." "Jaiden, is it the same type she had at her
house?" "It is the same pistol and one
of the rifles, Ginny." "Good, I shot and
cleaned a bear in Abingdon, and I'll do the same thing here."
"Wait a
minute, Martha; did you say you killed and cleaned a bear in Abingdon?" "I sure did.
Little boys probably taste good to bears, but bear tastes better to
me. Jaiden was outside playing in the back
of the house, and I was on the patio when a bear came up. Jaiden ran inside, and I got the pistol, shot
the bear in the head, and killed him with one shot. Then I skinned him, cut up the meat, and put
it in the freezer. You know that bear
rug I have in my living room was the bear.
Don't nobody and nothing mess with my baby." "Martha, I didn't know you could do that." "I was raised on a farm in Alabama, and my
daddy taught me how to hunt and skin animals.
I got pretty good at doing that, but that was long ago. I can still do it, though." Granny laughed when she told Ginny to not let
her make her angry."
"Good morning,
Ashley. I will get a mysterious package
at the office this morning when UPS makes it run." "What should I expect, Dr. Jaiden?" "A rifle and a pistol." "A what?"
"A rifle and a pistol. We had a
bear come into the backyard last night while the children were outside. We got them inside just in time, and Don called
the police, who got the game wardens who tranquilized the bear and took him to
the other side of the mountain."
"Doc, that
is scary!" "You're
telling me. I don't know if Ginny will
be able to get my drawers cleaned or have to throw
them into the garbage." "Doc, I know
you are exaggerating about that." Peyton
stepped around the corner and said, "Ashley, Jaiden isn't kidding." About the same time, Richard stepped around
the corner and said, "Jaiden, don't ever do that again while I'm around you; I still don't have that smell out of my nose." The ladies started laughing when Richard said
that, and Jaiden let them know they were being punked, except that a bear
really did show up in his backyard.
"Jaiden,
this is Don. You and the guys made the
news this morning; the game wardens called the newsroom at the tv station, and
they took some video of the bear before he was released; it just aired on the
news." "Thanks for letting me know, Don;
I'll get the ladies to turn on the news in case it is replayed."
"Ladies, I
bet you never expected to work for doctors who would tell you to turn on the
television and watch the morning news." "No,
we didn't, and we won't turn on a tv while at work. Do it this morning; Peyton, Dale, Charley, and
I were on the news this morning; the game warden's
called the newsroom at the tv station, and they shot some video of the bear
being released and told the story behind his capture."
The ladies
turned on the television and saw the video of the bear. They were amazed that the bear wound up in
Peyton's and Jaiden's yard close to the hospital. "Doc, that was a big bear. I hope you have some protection in the house
if it happens again." As she said that,
the UPS driver walked into the office with the rifle and pistol Jaiden's mother
had shipped to him. "Jaiden looked at
Ashley and said, "I didn't have any protection last night, but I do now."
"Doc, what
is going to happen if it happens if a bear comes up while the ladies have the
children in the yard?" "She has used the
pistol in this box before, and she knows how to use it. When I was about the age my boys are, a bear
came up at Mom's house, and Ginny shot it square between its eyes. Then, she skinned it and put the meat in the
freezer. I discovered that when Ginny
cooks bear meat, it's delicious." "You
have to be kidding about that." "Nope,
it really happened; call Ginny and ask her."
When Jaiden
went into an exam room with a patient, Ashley called Ginny and found out Jaiden
had told the truth. That was the story
of the day in the front office.
When Peyton,
Richard, and Jaiden went to lunch in the doctor's lounge at the hospital, numerous
doctors came by to say something about the bear incident. Dr. Don Brannen, the doctor Jaiden and Peyton
trained under as Physician's Assistants, walked into the cafeteria
and sat with the guys for lunch.
"Jaiden, the
wife said to tell you that your bear incident scared the crap out of her. She's skittish about going into the yard by
herself since she saw last night's news account; frankly, I don't blame
her. I'm a bit concerned that we would
have a bear anywhere near the neighborhood.
I would have thought we were too close to highways and noise for a bear
to be around." "Don, when people encroach
on the bear's territory and deplete his food supply, what else is he to do; he has to find food somewhere; it just isn't going to be my
children who feed him. Mom sent me a
rifle and a pistol that I used in Virginia, and somehow, it got delivered to
the office this morning."
"You're not
worried about using a rifle in the city limits?" "Not when the judge was sitting on the deck
when the bear jumped over the fence. All
of us fertilized the grass if you know what I mean." "I think I do, son, I think I do. But what about the ladies having the children
outside to play?" "It won't be the first
time Ginny has killed and dressed out a bear."
"That sweet little lady?" "She
shot one between the eyes at Mom's house when I was the age my boys are. Then she skinned him, cut the meat up, and
put it in the freezer. As she says, nothing
and nobody messes with her children; I wouldn't recommend anybody test her on
that." "Since you said it that way, I'll
be sure not to step out of line when around Ginny." "That would be the sensible thing to do when
she had the children with her."
