Greg Patrick
"Peyton, I
heard about a Netflix movie I'd like to watch with you tonight and maybe with
Charlie and Dale if they want to join us."
"What's the name of the movie?"
"It is a series called Heartstopper that Greg told me about at the
hospital today. It's about three
relationships that mirror how you and I met and got together, and two girls who
got together much the same way Dale and Charlie did in high school. And then there is a twist about two
characters who fell in love but haven't yet started dating, one a British-Asian
young man and the other a transgender female.
Greg said it was the most well-written, beautifully filmed, and
described the relationship ideals you, Dale, Charlie, and I have." "Sounds interesting, Jaiden; let's ask
Charlie and Dale if they'd like to see the show and have some coffee with cheese
and crackers after the children go to bed."
"That sounds
good to me; I'll ask them after they get home and we have dinner. Tonight is Prime Rib and asparagus night at
the Country Club, so I'd like to have that for dinner and take Ginny, Granny, and
their husbands with us." "Babe, that
sounds so good, as tired as I am tonight. Today was a busy day for all of us, and we
ended the day with some problems on the floor that we had to deal with before
we got home."
Dale and
Charlie walked in the door to the house at 6:15 pm, and Dale promptly asked
Jaiden and Peyton to excuse him for a few minutes while he went to drop some
friends off at the pool. Peyton put his
hands over his face and said, "Damn, Dale, TMI!"
Charlie
being himself, looked at Peyton and said, "at least he didn't say he had to go
take a dump." Peyton rolled his eyes as Jaiden started laughing at Charlie's
comment.
When Dale returned
to the den, Charlie looked at him and asked if his `friends' enjoyed being
dropped off at the pool, and Peyton all but gagged. Again, Jaiden laughed at his husband and
clapped his hands as his mother would if she were there.
"Dale,
Charlie, I'd like to take everyone to the Country Club tonight since it is
Prime Rib and asparagus night. Then,
after we get home and the children go to bed, Peyton and I would like to watch
a Netflix show with you two while we have some coffee, cheese, and
crackers. Would you two be interested in
watching the show with us?" "Sure, we're
game, and it will give us a chance to relax before we go to bed. By the way, what is the movie about?" "Long story short, it's virtually about our
relationship and love for each other. Greg
said it is the best movie series he has ever watched. It is reportedly such a great series that
Netflix has renewed it for two more years."
"Sounds good
to me. Perhaps it will work into what we
try to educate people about regarding gay relationships and marriage." "I think you hit the nail on the head, Dale."
"If y'all
will excuse me, I will call Ginny and Granny and see if they and their husbands
would like to go to dinner with us."
"Ginny,
Granny, and their husbands are going to meet us at the Country Club, so as soon
as we can get the children loaded into the van and get there, we can eat, get
home and spend some time with the children and then get them into bed. Afterward, we can watch the first episode of
Heartstopper."
The dads
loaded into the van, and everyone arrived for dinner at the Country Club at
six. The children were excited about
eating prime rib with their dads and were eager to take their seats for dinner. When the food arrived at the table, the dads
cut up several steaks so the children could safely eat them and put the
asparagus on their plates along with some mashed potatoes with butter. Before the blessing over the meal was said,
not a sound was made, but afterward, the boys and Alaina Noelle squealed with
delight. The children had their favorite
ice cream for dessert when dinner was over that evening. Gampy and the Reverend had a blast watching
the children enjoy their meal, especially their ice cream.
After
everyone got home, the children played outside for an hour before they became
tired and asked to go to bed. Their
request was honored, and the parents settled into the den to watch
Heartstopper's first episode, which lasted approximately forty-five minutes. Not much was said for a few minutes after the
movie ended. Jaiden, Peyton, Dale, and
Charlie all had tears in their eyes after reliving the beginnings of their
relationships which bore similarities to the film.
Jaiden
asked, "so what did y'all think about the movie plot?" Charlie looked at Dale,
apologized for their rift at Wellstone, and said that Charlie Spring's
relationship with the boy that was supposed to be his boyfriend made him so
angry that he wanted to coldcock Ben for being an asshole. Peyton told Charlie to get in line that he
had first dibs on Ben Hope. Peyton
looked at Jaiden and said that Nick Nelson reminded him of his husband when he
grabbed Ben in the classroom and told him that Charlie Spring said to stop and
then shoved him down the hall and told him to piss off. "Jaiden, it was like when you went after the
two preachers in the restaurant and made the news for what you said to them."
Jaiden let a tear escape from his eyes, lifted Peyton's hand to his face, and
kissed it. "Peyton, I did it then, and
I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Nobody
will disrespect you in front of me and get away with it...nobody!" Peyton reached
up and wiped the tears from Jaiden's cheek and said, "Sweetheart, ditto. I love you so much it sometimes hurts."
Dale stared
at the television and didn't say much.
When he
finally calmed down, he looked at Charlie and said, "Babe, I love you to Mars
and back, and I always will. Like Nick
was to Charlie Spring, that is how I want to be to you." "You are, Babe, don't worry about that. I feel so loved by you and the children that
I am the richest man on this earth."
Jaiden said,
"you know, Ben Hope is nothing but a gaslighting narcissistic asshole, and he
deserves to get his ass whipped, and I would love the chance to do just that."
Then Charlie said he felt the same way and that, given a chance, he would stomp
Ben Hope's butt into the ground." His comment got a laugh out of Peyton because
he knew what had happened earlier in Dale and Charlie's relationship and how
much the incident hurt both of them. Charlie
Spring suffered the same pain in the first episode of the show.
Dale asked
what everyone's favorite scene was in the first episode, and everybody said it
was when Nick Nelson walked up to Charlie Spring at his locker and Charlie
dropped all the contents of his locker onto the floor of the corridor. It was also the scene where it was evident
that Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson indicated their feelings for each
other. Everybody enjoyed the different
scene when Charlie Spring tried out for the rugby team and tackled Nick. As Nick was getting up off the ground, it
appeared he was about to sport a huge erection.
The more
Charlie and Nick practiced rugby together, the more apparent it became that
Nick had fallen in love with Charlie.
Then Charlie
told Ben that he had seen him kissing the girl on the school grounds and let
him have it inside the school for not respecting his feelings. That was the scene where Nick grabbed Ben,
slung him down the hall, and told him Charlie had told him to stop and that he
needed to "Piss off." Ben Hope did that, and he did it in a hurry. But he had no intention of letting Charlie
Spring get away from him that easily and Nick had no intention of allowing him
to bully Charlie.
As Nick sat
on his bed and read texts from Charlie, there was no doubt that he had fallen
in love with Charlie Spring, and Charlie had fallen head over heels in love
with him.
The consensus
after watching the movie was that the guys could not wait to watch episode two
the following night.
Enter Elle
onto the scene, and her desired relationship with Tao becomes evident. There is a twist to Elle that everyone will
have to watch the movie to figure out, and it will take some concentrated
viewing of episode two to figure out what is what. One thing was sure: watching the development
of Tao and Elle's relationship would be exciting. Without a doubt, Heartstopper is the
best-written best story ever.
The dads sat
on the deck, drank coffee, and held each other.
Jaiden and Peyton laid back on the chaise lounge, Peyton on top of
Jaiden, who kissed Peyton and slid his hands inside Peyton's briefs and
lovingly rubbed his butt, eliciting a protruding erection from his
husband. It wasn't any different for
Dale and Charlie, lying on the other chaise lounge, doing the same thing. The first episode of the series put love in
the air, and nothing was going to extinguish that!
Jaiden got
up, went into the den, and started playing Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, singing
Somewhere Over the Rainbow on the stereo.
Brudda Iz's
music further set the mood for the evening.
Peyton let a tear escape from his eye when Iz started
singing You Don't Know Me.
Talk about a love song! You'll
have to listen to it on YouTube because trying to describe the piece won't do
it justice; it is so beautiful and apropos.
"Peyton, can we go to bed, and you let me just hold you?" "All night long, babe!"
Jaiden began
singing in his beautiful baritone voice:
"I saw you
in my dreams,
We were walking hand in hand,
On a white, sandy..beach...in Hawaii.
We were
playing in the sun,
We were having so much fun,
On a white...sandy
beach...in Hawaii;
Sounds of
the Ocean,
Soothe my restless soul,
Sounds of
the ocean,
Rock me all night long...
Those hot
long summer days,
Lying there in the sun,
On a white,
sandy beach...of Hawaii...
Sounds of
the ocean,
Soothe my restless soul,
Sounds of
the ocean,
Rock me all night long...
Last night
in my dreams,
I saw your face again,
We were in
the sun,
On a white, sandy beach...
Of Hawaii...
On a white,
sandy beach...
Of...of...of...
Of Hawaii!
Tears
flooded Peyton's eyes as the love of his life sang that beautiful tune he
learned from Israel Kamakawiwoʻole while they were on their honeymoon in
Maui, Hawaii. Dale and Charlie were
stone-faced as Jaiden sang that song.
Peyton took
Jaiden by the hand and said, "Come with me."
He walked
Jaiden to their bedroom, went inside, and closed and locked the door. He undressed Jaiden, lay him on their bed,
and then he undressed and crawled into bed with Jaiden and snuggled up to his
husband as closely as possible. When he
awoke the following day, Jaiden was still holding the love of his life the same
way he was when they went to bed.
Charlie and Dale were no different in their bedroom. The movie and the music from the night before
had left an indelible mark on each of the lovers.
Jaiden
slipped out of bed the following morning and told Peyton he would be right
back. When he returned, he served Peyton
breakfast in bed with the best cup of coffee Peyton had ever drunk. Dale did the same thing for Charlie and
followed Jaiden back to their bedroom.
Thankfully,
the children slept in that morning and gave their dads extra snuggle time.
When the
children awoke, the dads got them dressed and into some warm clothing, fed them
breakfast, and asked them if they would like to go to the mountain trails for a
long walk or if they wished to go to the beach first. Alaina Noelle quickly answered and said she
wanted to go to the mountain trail first. Then, she looked at her brothers with a
particular expression, and the brothers didn't say a word. Finally, Dale grinned from ear to ear and
said, "that's my girl, and the boys are still scared of her." Nathan Robert
heard Dale and said, "Daddy, `Laina is mean; we don't
mess with her. She's in a bad mood."
Jaiden and
Peyton nearly laughed their butts off at Nathan Robert's comment, but they knew
he was telling the truth. So when
everyone was in the van and ready to go, instead of going to the mountains or
the beach, they wound up at Mr. Pope's Ford dealership.
Charlie
asked why they stopped there, and Jaiden replied, "you'll see." He went inside for a moment and then came back
outside and asked Dale and Charlie to go with him and look at something.
They walked into
the new car prep department, and Mr. Pope handed Dale some keys and told him to
look at the beautiful red minivan. Dale
looked at the van and said it was nice, but they already had two cars. Mr. Pope said he realized it was no fun
taking their children anywhere when they had to take them in two vehicles. He handed Dale and Charlie three sets of
papers and showed them where he wanted them to sign on the dotted lines. When they had signed the papers, Mr. Pope
said, "Gentlemen, enjoy your new minivan. When Alaina wants to go somewhere, and the
boys want to go somewhere else, they can take the children who want to go to
the same spot, and Jaiden and Peyton could take the other boys to the beach or
the mountains first."
Charlie
interjected that they hadn't paid for the van.
Mr. Pope said, "don't worry about it – he didn't tell them that Jaiden's
mom bought the van for them so they could drive to Florida when they wanted to
see their parents and siblings while Peyton and Jaiden went to see her in
Abingdon."
Dale looked
at Peyton and Jaiden and commented that they shouldn't have done that. "Done what," Peyton asked. "Paid for the van, that's what!" "Jaiden said, "Dale, we didn't pay for that
van, so you need to look elsewhere for that." The funny thing is that Jaiden
knew his mother bought the van for Charlie and Dale because she thought they
needed it and would enjoy it, but nobody would say that it was she who
purchased the van for the guys.
Jaiden drove
down the road with the weirdest grin he'd had on his face in a long time. Peyton was steadily poking Jaiden in his side
to get him to stop grinning before he gave the secret away. It didn't matter because Dale was driving the
new van to the mountains.
Charlie,
however, was in the big van with Jaiden, Peyton, and all the children. They would swap out the car seats when they
got to the parking lot in the state park.
When
everyone was ready to make the trek to the beach, Dale and Charlie put their
children in the new van. When the
children were in the new van, Chuck said, "Daddy, I like the new car, the other
car stunk." Dale asked, "What do you mean, Chuck?" "Nathan was farting, and he stunk." "He did?"
"Uh huh, and he stunk."
"Well, if
nobody farts in the new van, it won't stink."
When Dale
said that, Alaina Noelle made visual contact with each of her brothers, and
they got her message loud and clear: if
they farted, they would pay a hefty price!
While the
guys and their children were in the mountain park, they discussed the movie
HEARTSTOPPER.
Peyton asked
what parts of the movie touched them the most.
Charlie
teared up and said the scene where Charlie told Nick he thought they should
break up because all he did was make Nick's life miserable." "Why did that scene upset you, bro?" "Don't you remember when I did something
stupid at Wellstone and Dale, and I almost broke up? That was the worst day of my life and
something I will never forget. I didn't
mean to upset Dale that way; I didn't mean to do what I did; it happened before
I knew what was going on." Dale looked
at Charlie and turned Charlie's face to him.
"Charlie, do
you remember what Nick did in the middle of a rugby game and what Charlie
Friend did in the school corridor?"
"Yes, why?"
"Didn't we
do the same thing and renew our promises to each other?" "Yes, but what I did still hurts me to my
core." "Charlie, you must let that go,
and we must move forward together. I
love you more than anyone else, and you know that." "Yeah, I do, but it still hurts that I
disappointed you so badly."
Dale
tenderly held Charlie's face as he lost it.
Peyton
looked at Jaiden and said, "Just like Nick Nelson when he kissed his first boy,
Charlie Spring!" Jaiden smiled and said, "Yeah, I know; it's sort of like we
did the first night we held each other in bed after that unbelievable shower we
took together." Peyton didn't say a word, but he smiled from ear to ear; he
meant for that night to happen, and Jaiden knew it!
When Dale
helped Charlie calm down, he said, "that scene where Tau got into a fight with
Harry reminded me of the day Charlie and I had our disagreement, and the two of
you jumped our butts. We all were mad at
each other, but we made up and apologized as Charlie and Tau did at the spring
athletic event at their school. That was
the point for me that I realized how much we all loved each other at Wellstone
and how much we still love each other." Peyton replied that he had the same thought
when that scene played. Jaiden said, "do
y'all remember what we started doing at that point?" Dale smiled and said,
"yep, we started running together every evening to get rid of our stress." "That we did," Jaiden said. "Now look at us: we have ten children between
the four of us; we all live together in a huge home, and we're extremely
protective of each other, especially our children."
"What did
y'all think of the scene where Nick pulled Dan off Charlie in the school
room?" "Charlie started laughing and
said it was similar to when Peyton took down Leon in the park in Memphis,"
Peyton said that was the same thought he had when he watched that scene. "It encouraged Charlie to start taking up for
himself; I was so proud of him when Dan tried to apologize and kiss him at the
hotel during Harry's birthday party, and Charlie pushed him into the hallway
wall. Nick loved that happening because
it was when he knew that Charlie was in love with him, or as they said, they
"liked each other."
Jaiden asked,
"What wasn't in the series you would like to see?" "Charlie being Charlie, said, "I would love
to have seen the ten instances where they made out before confirming their
relationship as boyfriends."
Dale spoke
up and asked, "Charlie, are you eternally horny?" "Yeah, I think so, especially when I see you
naked. I get so horny you couldn't break
my dick with a sledgehammer." Jaiden laughed and told Charlie that was TMI. "Well, Dale asked, and all I did was answer
him." "That's true, Charlie, but
sometimes you can answer a question with your eyes and lips." "True, Jaiden, but it isn't nearly as fun
answering a question that way." Jaiden
hung his head while laughing and said, "damned if I didn't step into that one."
Dale said, "amen to that."
Peyton kept
quiet while that discussion continued, but he wasn't without an answer as he
reached over and grabbed Jaiden's crotch.
Sweetheart,
Charlie isn't the only one who seems to be horny all the time; your penis is so
hard right now that you could slam the car door on it and never feel
pain." "PEYTON!" "Hey, babe, if you hadn't sported that
reaction, or should I say that erection, I wouldn't have said a word, so you
could say you rose to the occasion."
Dale and Charlie laughed so hard that they started coughing.
Neither of
the guys saw Nathan Robert go behind them and didn't notice he wasn't in front
of them until they heard, "Daddy, what is an erection?" Jaiden turned blood red
and told Peyton, "You got it started, so you get to answer our son's
question." "Nathan Robert, you know the
flag pole at school? Well, it stands
erect, meaning it stands straight up.
That's what erection means, to stand straight up."
Peyton let
out a massive sigh of relief when Nathan Robert said, "oh, OK, Daddy, and let
the rest of his questions disappear." Jaiden said, OK, Charlie, that's enough,
don't arouse more suspicious questions."
"Jaiden, I'm not the one causing an arousal; I believe that is you!"
Peyton lost it and spat Pepsi all over the ground. Alaina Noelle saw Peyton spit out Pepsi all
over the ground and said, "Unka Peyton, you wasted Pepsi; you shouldn't waste
Pepsi." "OK, Alaina Noelle, I'll be more
careful. Unka Jaiden wasted something I
wish he hadn't wasted. I would have
liked to play with it." "What did he
waste, Unka Peyton?" "Oh, it was just a
toy I like, and he lost it." "Unka
Jaiden, you shouldn't lose Unka Peyton's toys." It would be appropriate to say
that Peyton, Dale, and Charlie were ROTGLTAO.
Jaiden turned eight shades of red; he was so embarrassed – and the guys
loved seeing him that way!
"Anything
else you wish to add, Jaiden?" "Hell no,
Charlie, and you better not add anything either."
Jaiden, what
was your most realistic reaction to the story?"
"You know
where Nick sat down to talk to his mother over a cup of coffee? When Peyton and I tried to tell our parents
that we were gay, we got pretty much the same loving reaction from our
parents. I was so happy that the lady
who played Nick's mother taught parents how to respond to their children coming
out as gay or bisexual." Dale said he and Charlie had the same feeling about
that scene. How much more loving could a
parent be to say, "Oh, baby, I love you"- when their child steps out of the
closet? I wish Leon could have
experienced that, and the children we went to court to help. I wish their parents could have been that
kind of parent. It would have made a
world of difference in the lives of Richard, Seth, and Andrew. But then again, if their birth parents had been
kind and understanding, they wouldn't be Peyton's brothers at this point."
"And what
about Jeremy Stanislauski, Bobby Gentry, and don't forget Maddie, Justin Tyler,
and Daniel? It seems like every case
we've all stepped into caused the lives of the children to be immensely
better. Isn't that what Nick and Charlie's
friend did for them?
Make their lives better?" Jaiden, that's what made what we did worth all
the costs we faced." "Amen, Charlie,
amen."
What things
did y'all notice, should have noticed, in the film that the ordinary person
might miss?
"What do you
mean, Jaiden?"
"Dale, there
were some things that you would have missed if you didn't pay close attention
to the film. What were some things that
you may have noticed?" "Where did Elle
first go to school?" "Didn't she first
go to Truham?' "She did, Dale. But she transferred to a different school;
what was the name of the second school?"
"Wasn't it
the Higgs School?" "Yes, but what set it
apart from the Truham School?"
"Wait a
minute, Truham was a boy's school, and Elle went to that school for several
years before transferring to Higgs.
Higgs was a girl's school." "Bro,
you are correct, so what does that tell you about Elle? Tau?" Elle is
transgender, and she is in love with Tau, who is in love with her." "You got it.
Before the
school clue, what else was there about Elle that you noticed – or didn't?"
Think about her sitting at the tables on the school grounds, lying back on
Charlie's bed and the table in the art room."
"She was flat-chested." "Correct,
she had no female breasts." "That she
was, but she was still a lovely girl.
"Dame, Jaiden, we need to watch that several more times to see what we
missed in the translations." "My thought
exactly. The series is similar to the
movie, A Great Mind. He walked through a
flock of pigeons, and they didn't so much as flinch; how many people noticed
that the first time they watched that movie?"
"Peyton
said, I know I missed it, Jaiden' now I have to go back and watch the movie
again to see what else I missed." Jaiden had a smug smile, knowing he had
touched the guy's minds and struck a mutual interest in re-examining things
seen and heard; are they natural, subconscious, or what? Their exploration of the past movies seen
would yield the answer to that question.
"If you had
to say what your favorite scenes were in HEARTSTOPPER, what would they
be?" "Geez, Peyton, for me, it would have
to have been in the hotel when Charlie asked Nick if he would kiss him. It was evident that it was a dream come true
for Nick and a dream realized by Charlie.
The look on
Nick's face after he twice kissed Charlie was heart-rending. His eyes were enough to make you cry. And then the guilt that appeared on Charlie's
face was so heartbreaking. And the
following day, when Nick appeared at Charlie's house to discuss those kisses,
Charlie's mom acted like an actual, uncaring heifer. Nick was about to cry when they headed up to
Charlie's room."
"When
Charlie started apologizing for asking Nick to kiss him thinking it had ruined
their friendship and their relationship, when Nick cried on Charlie's shoulder,
I wanted to do the same. The one part of
that scene that gave hope was when Nick got Charlie to stop fretting and kissed
him. Both their expressions were
amazing." "Same here, Dale. What about you, Charlie?
"I think for
me was when Kizzy, Corina, Elle, and Tao went for milkshakes before the band concert,
and Nick mentioned a triple date while Tao was at the milkshake stand getting
the last of the refills, and Elle realized Nick and Charlie were a couple and
was overjoyed along with Kizzy and Corina; that reminded me of when Dale and I
came out, and our parents abandoned us.
Charlie's dad was very supportive, but his mother was a different
story. Dale and I were both hurt that
way. In a way, it brought back much pain
and, at the same time, represented an acceptance of Nick and Charlie's relationship. I wish we could have seen Charlie's mom's
reaction to the news; it would have been comforting to know that she understood
and accepted the two as a couple – like Charlie's sister did.
Jaiden said,
"Without a doubt in my mind, that was the most beautiful story told most
amazingly and positively with little or no mention of gay sex. In addition, the series' filming was spot on
and not vulgar in ways other such movies can be and have been.
It signals to me that our relationships are becoming more understood and accepted in society; I hope that is the case.
