"Good
morning, Peter; how are you today?" I am on top of the world, Jaiden. Are you and Peyton going to be home
tonight?"
"We are;
what's up?" "Leon and I would like to
stop by your house and talk to you about something we've been discussing and
see if y'all would like to join us."
"Sounds fine.
Why don't we
meet for dinner at the country club, relax, and talk there? Then we can go to the house for coffee and
knishes for dessert and watch the children play until it's time for them to go
to bed." "Sounds great, Jaiden; what
time do you want to meet for dinner?"
Peyton
approached Peter and Jaiden while they were discussing dinner and said, "Peter,
how about 6:30? We should be finished in
the office and home by then, and I would welcome some quieter time this
evening." "Jaiden, how about it?" "Sounds good to me, Peter. Will it be a good time for Leon?" "Yeah, he is in the middle of completing his
practicum and internship training, and he gets off early tonight."
"Talking about
Leon's practicum, how is that going for him?" Peyton, Leon is getting rave
reviews on his work and is approaching his last semester before graduating with
his master's Degree in Counseling Psychology."
"That fast, Peter?" "That fast,
Peyton. I have never seen someone
embrace a field of study the way Leon has; I'm so proud of him.
Don't tell
him what I told you because he wants to surprise everybody with his early
graduation."
"When does
Leon take his board exams?" "Surprise,
Jaiden, he's already taken and passed the boards, so he can immediately start
his practice when he graduates." "With
us, I hope, Peter." "That's the plan,
Jaiden. He is so excited about
everything! He is constantly whistling,
thinking about helping someone go through what he went through and helping them
stay out of trouble."
"You know,
Peter. If he and I hadn't gotten into
that fight and he hadn't gotten an invitation to the State's courtroom for a
discussion, this might never have happened."
"He talks
about that, too, Jaiden, and he laments how becoming a part of Peyton's family
was the best thing that ever happened to him.
He never had any support to do anything before that happened."
"Y'all,
don't forget to put the judge in Tennessee on the invitation list for the
graduation; he'll get a kick out of seeing your home here, staying with you and
Leon, and talking about Leon's successes.
I know the judge is going to be so proud of Leon.
Even the
prosecutor and Leon's attorney want to attend the graduation, and we have
plenty of room now. I know Jenny is
coming, but I don't think her family will accompany her; if they do, we'll make
arrangements for them.
Either way,
we'll make room for whoever wants to attend Leon's graduation." "I appreciate that, Jaiden. I would love to throw a surprise graduation
party at the country club."
"Peter,
let's make that happen; invite the folks from Tennessee, including his
counselor at the center...and don't forget the news crew that covered his story;
I'm sure they'd like to do a follow-up report."
"We can get
his office set up and bring everybody to see it as part of the celebration;
have his business cards printed, his name on the office door, a name-plate made
for his desk, and sound equipment to help his patients relax during their
therapy sessions."
"Jaiden, if
we can pull that off, Leon will freak out!"
"Yeah, won't
seeing the surprise on his face be fun?"
"Peter, talk to him and see what he wants his office to be like, the
style of furniture, the decorations, all of those things. That way, we can make notes and get what he
wants for his office set-up."
"Awesome,
Bro; great idea. Leon is coming to the
office to have lunch with me; let's make it a group and maybe bounce a few
questions off him." "How about it,
Peyton?" "Sounds good to me. Let's ask Richard when he gets through with
rounds."
Richard
completed rounds in the hospital at 10:00 and walked to the office. Since he had some time before seeing patients
for the day, Peyton broached the subject of lunch, and Peter thought it was a
great idea and said that Sally and the boys would be joining him for
lunch.
"Richard,
Sally being here is even better; women are much more adept at decorating than
men, and she can probably give us some good ideas." "If the babies are being a handful, we may
have to help with them so she can think straight."
"Is there a
chance Andrew with be with Sally at lunch?"
"No, he is
in school and won't let anything interfere with his education." "Talking about that, how is Andrew doing in
school?" "Straight As and top of his
class. Andrew is amazing, Peter; we are
so blessed to be his parents.
If there
were a Best Child of the Year contest, we would nominate him, and he would win
hands down." "That good, Richard?"
Jaiden, you don't know; Andrew constantly amazes me."
"Doctor
Richard, your first patient of the day is here." "OK, thank you, Ashley!"
"Riley, Reynolds,
Andrews Pediatric Group, this is Ashley; how may I help you?"
"Ashley,
this is James Sinclair, Principal of Erie High School. Is Dr. Richard Riley able to speak with me
for a moment?"
"Dr.
Sinclair, Dr. Richard is with a patient at the moment. Is there something I may help you with?" "His son, Andrew, had an accident in gym
class and hurt his left arm. I think he
needs to see a doctor to determine if the arm is broken."
"One moment,
Dr. Sinclair, I'll get Dr. Riley on the telephone for you."
Ashley went
to Richard's exam room, knocked on the door, and told him Andrew had gotten
hurt at school and that the principal was on the phone to speak with him. Richard excused himself from his patient and
took the telephone call.
"Dr.
Sinclair, this is Dr. Riley; what is going on with my son?" "Dr. Riley, he was running track in PE and
tripped, fell, and hurt his left arm. He
is in a bit of pain, and I think he may have broken his arm when he fell on it;
I think he needs to see a doctor." "Let
me finish with my patient, and I'll be on my way to pick him up."
"Dr. Riley,
I know of your practice and how busy it is; I don't mind bringing Andrew to
your office." "Dr. Sinclair, that would
be much appreciated if you could do that.
I'll have Ashley get Radiology to make a spot for him, and if the arm isn't
broken, I'll get one of my brothers to see him, give him some pain medication,
and let him return to school."
"Dr. Riley,
there is no problem with Andrew missing the rest of the day from school."
"Dr.
Sinclair, with all due respect, I'll let you tell him that and then argue with
him that it is OK to go home early. That
boy doesn't let anything interfere with his education – not even a broken arm." "OK, Dr. Riley, we'll see you in a few
minutes."
"Ashley,
call Radiology and have them get ready to see Andrew; he may have broken his
arm in PE. And if you would, call Sally
for me and let her know." "Yes, sir, Dr.
Riley."
Ashley
called Sally first and then Radiology.
"Dr.
Richard, Radiology will be waiting on Andrew as soon as he arrives, and Sally
is on her way." "Great; thanks,
Ashley. Andrew won't argue with Sally if
she tells him he is going home."
"Dr.
Richard, are you implying that Andrew is as stubborn as you?"
"Not in the
least, Ashley, I'm flat out saying that boy is more obstinate and stubborn
about his education and not missing school, and I don't want to have to pull
rank on him to get him to go home." "I
understand, Dr. Richard, my son is the same way." "That's what I hear, Ashley; maybe we should
pray for each other." Sally and Richard laughed at his comment.
When Andrew
arrived at his dad's office, his eyes were red and swollen, indicating to
Richard that he had been in enough pain to make him cry.
He walked
Andrew to the Radiology department, where they met Sally. She left their younger boys with Ginny and
Granny since the other children were in kindergarten, which was an emergency.
They x-rayed
Andrew's arm, did a wet read of the x-ray, and pronounced it broken and needing
surgery to reset the bone.
Jaiden could
do the surgery, so Richard called him, and he dropped everything and went
straight to Radiology to see the films and to schedule a surgical suite. When he saw Andrew's x-rays, he told Richard
he could set the arm without surgery, but Andrew would need to be under a
general anesthetic.
Andrew was
taken to the emergency room, where a nurse anesthetist gave him some propofol
to put him to sleep so Jaiden could set the broken bone. Thirty minutes later, Jaiden had the compound
fracture back in place and had the tech put a cast on the arm. There would be no argument at this point;
Andrew was going home and would go to bed to sleep off the propofol. Jaiden gave Andrew a low-dose pain injection
and a prescription for low-dose Darvon to help him rest through the day.
Richard
said, "Jaiden, I doubt we can get him to take the medication; Andrew hates
pills." Jaiden started to speak when Sally spoke up, saying, "I'll tell him he
can take the pill, or he can roll over, and I will give it to him rectally; I
guarantee he'll take it then."
Given the
alternative method of receiving the medication, Richard said he would swallow
the pill too. Everybody laughed as they
noticed Andrew was waking up.
They got
Andrew into Sally's vehicle, and she drove him home and helped him get into his
bed. Sally got him to remove his jeans
and shirt to sleep more comfortably.
Then, she called Jaiden's house, and Ginny told her to stay home with
Andrew and said she would bring the babies home when she went home. Sally thanked Ginny profusely and checked on
Andrew, who was sleeping soundly. This
would allow Sally to prepare lunch and start dinner without being concerned
about the children.
Richard had
lunch with his brothers and brother-in-law as planned and called Sally during
lunch to check on Andrew. "Richard, he's
still asleep and isn't moaning, so I think he is OK. I have the pills, and that boy will take one
if he needs it; that I'll make sure of."
"OK,
sweetheart, call me if you need me; I'll try to get home early."
When Andrew
awoke, he was in pain but refused to take the pill. Sally went to her and Richard's bedroom, got
a syringe with an exceptionally long, fat needle, and filled the syringe with
water. She walked into Andrew's room and
said, "OK, son, you have a choice: You
can take this shot in your butt, and I assure you it will burn, or you can take
this pill." Andrew held his hand out to accept the pill and the glass of water
his mom had for him.
Sally laid
the syringe on the sink in her and Richard's master bathroom. When Richard got home, he saw the filled
syringe and asked Sally what it was. She
looked at Richard and said, "Honey, can't you see it's a filled syringe?" "I know that, dear; what kind of medicine is
in the syringe?"
"Oh, it's
just water. Andrew didn't want to take
the pain pill, so I filled the syringe with water and told him it was an
injection for pain that he would get in his butt and that it would sting or he
could take the pill; he took the pill.
Richard laughed at what Sally told him and then kissed his wife. "You told me you'd get him to take the pill."
Sally said, "and I did, didn't I," as a grin spread across her face.
Richard
entered Andrew's room, sat in a chair beside the bed, rubbed his son's head,
and asked, "Hey buddy, how're you feeling?"
"Dad, my arm
hurts pretty bad, but I guess it's gonna hurt until the swelling starts going
down." "That's true, son, and the way
you sleep can also make the arm hurt a bit more. Try to sleep on your side with the arm on a
pillow, and it won't hurt as much. If it
hurts more than you can stand, you can have another pain pill at eight
o'clock." "Dad, I'll take the pill at
eight and see if it helps."
"It'll help,
son, as long as you take it. If it
doesn't, I'll get your Uncle Jaiden to give you a shot of something stronger."
"Dad, why
can't you do that?" "Andrew, it's an
unwritten rule in medicine that you don't practice medicine on your child. It's one thing to vaccinate you, but it's
something different regarding a pain shot."
"OK, thanks, Dad; I'll try to beat the pain."
"That's OK
as long as you don't ignore the medication if you need it."
"Jaiden,
this is Richard. I won't be coming to
your house tonight. I will stay home and
give Sally a break from everything."
"That's a
good idea, Richard. We fed the boys
dinner with our children, so they are good to go. Ginny said they did well with her and Granny
today. I'll bring them home shortly;
they're having a blast playing with our children in the backyard. Alaina Noelle is very protective of the boys
and said that if a bear came up again, she'd kick his butt and not let him hurt
her cousins." Richard told Jaiden she
was one tough little girl, and Jaiden said he knew she was but that the rifle
was handy in case they needed it.
When Andrew
walked in and sat between them, Sally and Richard sat in their den. "Mom, thanks for taking care of me today; you
were really sweet to do that with everything else you had to do." "Honey, I didn't have anything to do that was
more important than taking care of you and your brothers. They're at your Uncle Jaiden's and Peyton's,
playing with their cousins and having a good time. What's important right now is that you're
comfortable and as pain-free as possible.
"I have your
dinner in the oven, so I'll go get it, and you can sit in here with your dad
and me and eat your supper. How about
iced tea to drink?"
"That would
be good, Mom; I'll come to get it." "No,
you won't; you stay right there with your dad."
Sally
brought Andrew's meal to the den on a tray and let him sit on the couch while
he ate dinner. She prepared a reasonably
light dinner for him so it wouldn't upset his stomach after the general
anesthesia earlier in the day.
When he
finished his supper, he got up to take his tray to the kitchen, but Richard
took the tray and told him to stay on the couch with his mom. When Richard returned to the den, Sally had
moved to the opposite side of Andrew, and he was cuddled up with his mother,
soundly sleeping as Sally gently rubbed his head. Sally looked at Andrew and smiled as a tear
rolled from her eye; she loves her children, and it hurts her when they are
sick or injured.
"Sally,
what's with the tear, sweetheart." "I
don't like it when one of my children is hurt or sick. I never understood why my mother acted as she
did when I was sick, but now I know: it's a mother's heart." Richard took
Sally's hand in his and kissed it.
"Sally, I
love you to Mars and back, and I always will!
You're a great mom." "And you're
a great dad, honey."
Richard took
Andrew to his room, lay him in his bed, and propped his arm on a pillow so it
wouldn't hurt so much. His son slept
peacefully all night long. He would talk
to his brother about the trip Leon and Peter suggested tomorrow.
"Good
morning, gentlemen. Peter said, "I hope
y'all thought briefly about the trip proposal we discussed yesterday." Peyton
said, "we did, Peter, and we would like to do that and meet Jaiden's cousins in
the UK, and see the synagogue where his grandfather was the Chief Rabbi.
We'll have
to look at activities for the children, but other than that, the trip is a go
for us – especially since there will be enough adults to take care of and
supervise the children appropriately."
"Awesome; I'll let Leon know."
"Nah, don't
tell him. Instead, bring Leon to the
house tonight, and we'll go out for dinner and let him know then. It will be fun to do something outlandish
with him; he's earned the trip the way he's worked his butt off in
college."
"Do you
think he would mind if we ask our parents if they would like to go on the trip
with us?" "I wouldn't mind, and I don't
think he would mind. I think he would
cherish the time he would get to spend with his parents and Peyton. He's said more than once that he wishes he
could spend more time with his parents."
"Interesting! I'll get Peyton to call them tonight and
speak with them about the trip. Getting
Seth to go will give him a nice break before beginning to practice some of what
he has learned at the University of Florida.
It would also
provide extra help with the children and make the trip more enjoyable."
The office
was buzzing with business that day, and the guys hardly had any time to talk
with each other except at lunch. When
Richard got home, Sally told him Andrew had a fair amount of pain during the
day, but that he had taken his medication without argument. Richard said that meant that his arm really
hurt.
Sally told
Richard that Andrew's teacher came by the house to bring him his schoolwork,
but told Andrew that he was so far ahead in his studies that he shouldn't worry
about school and take the time to rest and let his arm heal.
What was
funny was when a couple of Andrew's friends came by the house to cheer him up,
and she heard one of the boys say, "Andrew, if my mom were as hot as yours, I'd
try to stay home every day." Richard
smiled and said, "at least the boy knows true beauty when he sees it; boys will
be boys, so don't let his comment get to you."
"Get to me, Richard; I felt honored that Andrew's mom is the prettiest
of all the moms."
"I'm honored
that Andrew's mom is my beautiful, sweet wife."
Richard had
a certain gleam in his eyes that caused Sally to say, "I've got a headache
tonight." When she said that, Richard held his hand out and said, "Here, babe!"
"What's in
your hand, sweetie?" "Some medicine to
make your headache go away."
"Richard,
you're a nut, but I love you anyway." Then she laid her head on Richard's
shoulder, and they watched her favorite television show together.
"Mom, this
is your brilliant son, the doctor!" "You
can't be my brilliant son the doctor because he is at the University of Florida
and doesn't have his doctor's degree yet!"
"Mom, that
isn't fair; I'm your firstborn son!"
"OK, son, I'll give you that!"
All the guys
got together and discussed going to England when Leon graduates from Penn State
with his master's in a few months.
We'll take
the children and divide up the activities with some things the children will
enjoy doing, like going to the beach in the UK and going to one of the many
family parks on England's western coast."
"One of the
things Jaiden wants to do is go see the synagogue where his grandfather was the
Chief Rabbi, and meet his cousins who share his and my name." "Peyton, you and Jaiden have worked so hard,
and both of you deserve a vacation like that, but I'll have to talk with your
dad to see what he says; but don't worry about it, he'll say what I want him to
if he knows what's good for him."
"What about
Seth, mom; do you think he'll be able to go while he is on break?" "He wasn't planning on taking a break during
the summer, but your dad and I have been trying to get him to do that; he needs
some rest. He's top of his class with
perfect grades. I may have to argue with
him a bit to get him to take some time off for a trip, but, as you know, I can
be pretty persuasive when I want to be."
"That's
true, mom; he'll go to the UK with us, no doubt about that, if you get
persuasive with him. So let us get the
dates down pat and get someone to cover our office, and I'll call you
back." "OK, Peyton, I love you and will
talk with you later!" "I love you, too,
mom."
Jaiden, mom
said they'd love to go to the UK with us; how about your mom?" "I'm calling her right now; I'll tell you
what she says shortly."
"Hey, Mom,
this is your son who has brought you so much joy by being a doctor who's
married to a doctor." "Son, you know I'm
in a Reform synagogue now instead of an Orthodox stemple; but still, you have
made this Bubbie a very happy Savta."
"Ah, Mom, I see you still cling to some of the old traditions!" "I can't help it when I have wonderful
grandchildren as I have." "True."
"What's up, son?"
Mom, we are planning a trip to the UK to see the synagogue where your dad and
my grandfather was Chief Rabbi. We're
also going to do some touring and take the children to the beach in the western
part of the UK and to some of the children's parks there. The children will be thrilled to ride the
train to some places we will go. We're
still researching places and things we want them to see."
"So, you
want free babysitter help, do you?" "No,
Mom, there will be enough adults there that the children will have more than
one adult to look after each of them."
"I was kidding, Jaiden; I haven't been to the UK since you were five
years old, and I would love to go, so when you get the dates down pat, let me
know so I can make arrangements to have someone man the office."
"Leon,
Peter, come on in; you have a key, so you didn't have to ring the
doorbell." "Jaiden, Peyton, Leon said we
have to be on our best manners, and he made me ring the doorbell." Peyton said,
"Peter, you gotta love my brother!"
"Believe me, Peyton, I do...more than you will
ever know." "Uh, y'all are still
standing on the steps. Are you going to
come in?" "Leon and Peter entered the
house and headed for the deck, where the other guys sat and watched the
children. Dale got each of them a
much-appreciated cup of coffee and a hot peach knish, which everyone thoroughly
enjoyed.
Peter asked,
"Well, gents, did you talk with your parents to see if they would like to join
us on the trip?" "We did, Peter, and all
said they would love to go to the UK with us."
"I checked
the London Holiday Inn, and it is by far the nicest hotel for the price, about
two grand for two weeks – including the ten children and a free continental
breakfast that, for a small fee, can be upgraded to a full English breakfast."
"Jaiden,
what's the upgrade fee for the full English breakfast?" "The full English breakfast with sausage,
beans, and eggs, among other things, is about USD 8.00, which is about six
pounds, British Sterling, so more reasonable than it would be in the US.
One problem:
we must carry enough Beano with us if they don't sell it in the UK. I will not ride in a van or on a train close
to the children if they eat baked beans without having some Beano! Charley chimed in with an amen to that which
made everyone laugh.
"What about
the hotel costs, Jaiden?"
"I checked
again, and outside of London, we can get a room for each set of children and a
room for each couple and single adults for about USD 6,000 per week."
Dale said,
"that's not bad at all." "Leon said, no,
it isn't, and it makes me want to go even more, but if the family doesn't go, I
won't go."
Peyton asked,
"is that an attempt at bribery, Leon?"
"No, I haven't had the chance to spend quality time with my new family,
and I am craving that experience."
Leon's eyes turned a bit red, so Peyton knew he was being genuine.
"Leon, we're
going on that trip if for no other reason than to celebrate your huge success
at getting your bachelor's and master's degrees in Psychology, and for your
joining the family medical firm to practice your craft." That statement caused Leon to be slightly
emotional.
Jaiden said,
"guys, I would like to do something that seems a bit selfish, but I want to do
it anyway: I want to call our friends at
FOX and let them know what we intend to do on this trip and let them follow and
film us.
Even if they
don't air what they film, I want them to give the film to the Tennessee
Department of Corrections to show to all inmates in the prison system. There is a turd I want to see how successful
Leon has become, that he has gotten a graduate degree in counseling psychology,
and has joined a significant Pennsylvania medical practice working with
children facing impossible odds in their lives.
I want that turd to know how fortunate he could have been with a
wonderful, intelligent son and to realize what he threw away. I want him to know Leon has a family who
loves him without reservation, and that they always will...no matter what!"
"Jaiden,
that man got into your craw, didn't he?"
"More than you will ever know, Peter.
What I wouldn't give to have Richard go in and `reset' his nose again –
after the court let me break it seven ways from Sunday!"
"Does that
time in our lives bother you that much, Jaiden?" "Leon, you are a good man and always have
been. There is no telling what you may
have already accomplished if your dad had seen just an inkling of your goodness
and abilities, if he had loved you just a tenth of how much we all love
you. Yes, it bothers me that much."
"Jaiden,
don't let his sorry butt control your mind.
Forgive that resemblance of a man and put that out of your mind the best
you can."
"Yeah, Leon,
you're right, but that is easier said than done. Never in a million years would I have ever
believed anyone who said I would encounter a brash, southern redneck in
Tennessee, that I would go to court against, and that Hashem would impress upon
me the need for me to try to help him.
I indeed
would have never believed that such an individual would ever become a
much-beloved member of my extended family, and that I would get the chance to
help him become somebody he never thought he could be."
"Jaiden." "Yes, sir."
"I love you too, and I love my nieces and nephews whom I never dreamed I
would have - or love the way I do."
"As I said,
Leon, you are, always have been, and always will be, a good man." "Thanks, bro," "You're welcome, brother-in-law; you have
more than earned my adoration and support."
"Richard,
Peter, don't forget that Peyton and I will be in court in the morning on the
child abuse case. It should take a
couple of hours at best and then we'll go to the office.
