"Hey, Dr. Jaiden, are your `jets' cooled off today?"

"Maidie, I'll forgive you for asking that question if you will forgive me for not answering it!"

"This is Dr. Avraham Adelman at Erie Gastroenterology; by chance, is Dr. Jaiden free?" "Dr. Adelman, he is presently with a patient; however, I'll be glad to have him return your call when he is free." "Thank you, mam, please do that."

"Fifteen minutes later, Jaiden walked to the front office to have Carol schedule a surgical procedure for one of his patients.

"Dr. Jaiden, how much time do you think you'll need?" "Schedule an hour and a half in case a problem pops up that takes longer than anticipated.

It usually takes forty-five minutes to an hour; I need to remove a chemo port for Timmy Bascom. He is officially in remission!" The office and waiting room went wild when they heard the good news, and Timmy got to ring the bell as he left the pediatric practice.

"Dr. Jaiden, the surgical suite is reserved for ten am on Wednesday. I reserved the surgery room for an hour and a half. They don't have a surgery scheduled behind Timmy's, so scheduling said they would only charge the Bascoms for the actual use time." "Thanks, Carol, you are definitely a gem I intend to ensure is in this office for a long time – and that goes for you and Maidie too, Ashley!"

"Oh, thank you so much, Dr. Jaiden; I want to be here for at least fifty years. You can be here that long if you wish, Ashley, but chances are good that I will be living in Maui, Hawaii, by then, practicing my craft for native Hawaiians, and Dale and Charley and the children will be there with their families and us having a good time. Charley and Dale can design our office, and then they can run the office for us. The idea of living there and helping the people is something that thrills my soul." "Can you get Charley and Dale to work for you?" "I can; they'll want to eat, and if you don't work, you don't eat."

Aw, come on, Dr. J, you wouldn't do that to your brothers, and you know it." "That's true, Ashley! I know that, and you know that, but they don't know that. Remember, we are devoutly Jewish; we earn our keep no matter what and don't take anything for free. It's not in our chemistry to do that. We've already talked about retiring to Maui and will retire together after about 40 years or so of working. We loved Hawaii when we honeymooned there, and it is still drawing us back." "Doc, is it true that Hawaii either draws you in or spits you out?" "That's what I hear, Ashley, and for us, it is pulling us in like a strong ocean current. Maybe a few years after England, we can take you and your families to Hawaii. It's an affordable place to go if you take a trip during the off-season."

"Which is?" "The cheapest time to go is the end of August and the first few weeks in September. Someone will need to keep the children since they will be in school, but we have plenty of room at the house, so all the children can stay there, and I can pay Ginny, Granny, and anyone they want to help them keep the children - provided their health is still good enough to do that."

"By the way, Dr. Adelman called and wants you to call him."

"Avraham, this is Jaiden; what can I do for you?" "I think it is more of what I can do for you, Jaiden. I heard there was a brush fire in your ass yesterday, and I wanted to see if you needed the burns cared for." "Asshole! How'd you find out about what Peyton did?" "There was a little sparrow outside my window laughing his butt off, and I asked him why; that's when he told me the story. If you are OK, that is great. If you need me, give me a call. Bye, now." "That asshole! I can't believe he just did that. Peyton, did you tell Avraham about our bit of fun night before last?"

"Now, Babe, what makes you think I would do something like that?" "Your squinting smile, the laugh creases in your eyes, and the fact that you can't lie worth a damn!" "Well, think of it this way: If anyone can cool the burns of the bunghole, it is Avraham!" "So help me, sweetheart, I am gonna get you for that." "Ooh, I am so scared! Are you gonna spank me... PLEASE! Are you inviting me to play with your butt?" "If you are game tonight." When Peyton said that, Jaiden's flag pole went to full mast in a split second.

"Dr. J, what did y'all do while you were in Maui?"

"Maidie, One thing we did was to sit on the balcony while butt naked. When we went to go inside, we discovered we were locked outside and had to wait until the next morning for Charley and Dale to get up and let us inside." "You have to be kidding me!" "I wish I were, Ashley, but I'm not. We were very young and married between college and med school.

And taking advantage of the outcroppings of lava rock was another story in and of itself." "Whoa, doc, I don't think I want to hear about that." "Good, because I wasn't going to tell you about the fun we had on the rocks."

"Were you and Dr. Peyton put out with Dale and Charley there with you?" "Not in the least; they made the trip more enjoyable. We went to Fleetwood's restaurant on Front Street in Lahaina one night and didn't tell Charley the place existed, and one of the band members was there, and Charley got to meet and talk with him. You should have seen him; he was like a giddy child opening an early birthday present!" Does Charley like Fleetwood Mac?' "I'll say; it's his favorite rock band!"

"I don't think we'll leave the children behind.

The beaches in Maui are beautiful, especially the Kamaole beaches. The Pacific isn't as salty as the Atlantic, but the waves are stronger and can be higher than those in the Atlantic. Also, the upswing at the bases of the beaches in Hawaii helps to make the cresting waves higher."

"Why is that, Doc? "It's because the mass of the volcanic mountains below the water is substantially larger than what you see above the water, and as the waves are coming in, they slide up the mountains instead of crashing into them."

"Get your children interested in researching the volcanoes, what type volcanoes they are, and the histories attached to them. Then, we'll surprise them with a trip a few years down the road, and we won't tell them where we are going until the plane takes off and the stewardesses announce the destination." "They will freak, Doc!" "Yeah. Won't it be fun to watch them?"

"Speaking of trips, are y'all packed for the trip to the UK?" "We're almost finished doing that. We bought a few things clothing-wise for the children, but that is about it." "Do they have cameras they can take on the trip?"

"We'll get some disposable point-and-shoot cameras they can use. "Nah, not good enough. We've already bought them five small Canon Digital cameras and a couple of memory chips.

They can download the cameras into their computers, print their pictures and play with cropping them and correcting color balances and lighting. It'll be good practice for them. Don't tell them we have the cameras; we'll give the cameras to them once the jet takes off so they can read the use-instructions during our flight." "Doc, y'all have done enough already with the trip alone." "Carol, you, Ashley, and Maidie are family to us, and we take care of family; ask Richard and Peter."

Later that day, Richard walked into the front office to hand Maidie a file he finished notating, and Ashley asked, "Dr. Richard, Dr. Jaiden said that we ladies are family to y'all and that you take care of family. What did he mean by that?"

"Oh, my Lord, Ashley, I don't know if we have enough time this week to tell you what that means. My biological dad almost killed Seth when he caught him kissing his boyfriend. He didn't know Seth was gay and went berserk when he saw Seth and his boyfriend having a good time. He beat Seth so severely that he ruptured Seth's spleen, caused one lung to deflate, broke no less than six ribs, and then took a mop handle and sodomized Seth damaging a kidney and rupturing his lower colon."

"My little brother was in surgery for six and a half hours and in the hospital for a month and a half. I had suspected something was wrong with Seth, more so than what he had told me, and I called Jaiden and Peyton, who were Physician assistants at the hospital at the time. I took Seth to their house, and they spoke with him outside, just the three of them."

The next thing I knew, the Judge and his spouse were at the house, four police officers arrived, and Jaiden and Peyton rushed Seth to the hospital. A surgeon they worked for met them at the hospital, as did our medical instructor from the college. Then, that night, Peyton's dad, a huge man, and Peyton's mother walked into Seth's room."

"Peyton's mom, now my mom, didn't leave the hospital until they discharged Seth. A lawyer friend of Jaiden's at our temple came to the hospital, took one look at Seth, and took the case for Peyton's parents to adopt Seth. I didn't know until we went to court that they were also adopting me. Not only that, Peyton's dad went to LECOM and paid off all my medical school loans and paid for the balance of my medical education."

"We went to court a month later after the Judge and his husband visited Seth daily. My bio-dad shot his mouth off at Peyton, so the Judge let the sheriff take them to the prisoner's exercise yard and allow my sperm donor to challenge my brother."

"It wasn't a pretty site as Peyton literally beat the shit out of the man; you could smell him three blocks away! He broke an arm, a leg, and my dad's nose, dislocated his shoulder, and murdered his pride."

"Then our dad wanted a shot at the `bastard,' but my bio-donor was in no shape to challenge him, which was good because Dad would have broken him into like a toothpick."

"Peyton did all that damage to your bio-donor?" "He did, and since my sperm donor challenged him in court, there was nothing he could do about getting his ass whipped." "We didn't know Dr. Peyton could do that!"

"And then some, Maidie. He has several European world championship awards under his belt in Ju-Jit-Su, Karate, and Judo. I have ensured I can always outrun Peyton if I ever piss him off."

"Seth is in his last year of veterinary school at the University of Florida, and our parents are also responsible for that and have funded what his full scholarship hasn't paid. I don't know if y'all have met Mom yet, but you need to if you haven't; she is one amazing, incredible woman, so full of love it can't be measured. You can ask Jaiden about that. And our dad, oh wow, what can I not say good about him – he's amazing - and totally supportive of Seth and me."

Peyton was in the corridor and heard Richard say that and popped his head into the office and said, "Ladies, y'all can take that to the bank; everything Richard said is true; he didn't tell you, though, that Jenny has dad wrapped around her little finger, and we three boys have mom wrapped around ours – and, believe me when I say Mom controls dad! Oh, and don't say a derogatory word about Seth, or you'll see Mom turn into a pissed-off lioness protecting her youngest cub." "That bad, Dr. Peyton?" "That and then some, Carol. Even I refer to Seth as the sweet little angel." Ashley looked at Richard, who said, "Don't look at me; Peyton told the absolute truth about that."

That afternoon, Peyton and Richard's mom called the office, and Ashley took the chance to speak with her for a minute, and in the conversation, she asked how Seth was doing at school. The guy's mom replied, "Well, my perfect little angel..." When she transferred the call to Peyton, she turned, looked at Carol and Maidie, and died laughing. Carol asked, "What did their mom say that was so funny?" "You heard me ask her about Seth, and she began her answer with, `my perfect little angel'..." "So, Peyton and Dr. Richard were telling the truth!"

"Apparently."

Later, Jenny called to speak with Peyton about the trip, and Carol answered the phone and asked about Seth. "Jenny said, "That perfect little angel is doing so well in veterinary school...." When Carol hung up her phone receiver, she sat there shaking her head in disbelief.

"Apparently, Drs. Richard and Peyton's sister refers to Seth as her mother does."

Peyton heard Carol as he was showing a patient out of the office. He stuck his head in the door and asked, "How does Jenny refer to Seth as mom does?"

"Your mom called Seth her `perfect, sweet little angel."

"You don't realize half of it; there is no wrong where Seth is concerned. Mom and Dad are spoiling him to no end because of how he almost died just before they adopted him and Richard. But, quite frankly, that was the happiest day ever in my family's lives."

"I now have three brothers I didn't have when I went to med school with Jaiden, and we couldn't be happier together; three as gay as a three-dollar bill and one straighter than an Indian arrow!" "You didn't think about the inheritance you'll have to share now?

"Heck no! Seth will get the house and farm in Alabama if he wants it; the house Jaiden, Charley, Dale, and I live in our parents bought for us, and Jaiden and I bought Richard's home for him, Sally, and their two boys, which are now three – thanks to an abuse case Richard was involved in. He had Sally check on Andrew in the hospital, and a week later, the Judge took the parental rights permanently from his bio-parents and let Sally and Richard adopt him on the spot. They haven't looked back since. You've seen how Richard dotes on Andrew. He has a golden heart as big as Fort Knox because of what Seth endured, and quite frankly, so do Jaiden and I."

"Something I can't get over is that the first time Richard saw Andrew in the emergency room, he exploded, punched a fireproof cement door, and busted it. He would have killed Andrew's bio-dad if he could have gotten to him. We have known Richard for several years, and we had never seen him angry, and we haven't seen him angry since. So, if someone brings an abused child into the office, my advice is to not get in Richard's way when he goes after the child's abusive parents. If you do, there is a great chance you will get hurt." "Dr. Peyton, Dr. Richard gets that angry at parents in abuse cases?"

"Ashley, that's putting it as mildly as possible; Richard becomes livid!"

"Richard, Jaiden, and I have been involved in several child abuse cases. My parents have adopted three of those individuals; the Judge and his husband adopted one, and attorney Pete Gray and his wife adopted one of the boys. The families fit so well with the boys and the boys to the families that you would never guess their histories unless you knew about them; the adoption journeys have been so amazing."

"How have y'all gotten the judge to do so much for those boys?"

"Carol, there is a secret you can't tell anybody: the Judge is Jaiden's mother's second cousin, Jaiden's second cousin once removed. Roger Betterman and his partner are my cousins. We go to the same synagogue as the attorney who represented the boys as guardian ad litem, and he is best friends with Judge Stanislauski. Need I say more?"

"I don't think so, Dr. Peyton, but I have one question: how have you three faired through the court cases and the adoptions?"

"First of all, Carol, Jaiden is the most loving, concerned person I have ever known, and he has taught me, Charley, and Dale, to be the same way. Charley and Dale wouldn't still be a couple if it hadn't been for Jaiden and his stubbornness; you can thank his mother for instilling that into him." "Keep quiet and keep your ears open when you are around Jaiden, and you will learn so much from him that you will be amazed; I promise you that."

"Dr. Jaiden, the school is on the telephone about one of your boys." "Thanks, Ashley."

Hello, this is Dr. Jaiden Riley-Reynolds; with whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?" "Dr. Jaiden, this is Dr. Sims at the elementary school. Abraham was playing with Jared Gray on the playground at recess, and he and Jared tripped over a tree root, fell, and hurt their arms. According to the nurse, they are in quite a bit of pain, so I thought I would bring them to your office so you could check them out if that's OK with you."

"Dr. Sims, I appreciate the offer, but we have an early end to our day, so I'll call Pete and Allison and have them meet Peyton and me here at the office. We'll be at the school to pick up the boys in about 15 minutes."

"Pete, this is Jaiden; has Dr. Sims called you yet?"

"No, sir, he hasn't; what's up?"

"Abraham and Jared were playing on the playground and tripped over a tree root and hurt their arm."

"Jaiden, I did the legal work when that school was built, and I can tell you that if that happened, those boys had gone somewhere on the playground they shouldn't have; I know that playground like the back of my hand."

"Well, that's what I figured. Peyton and I are about to go get the boys. If you don't mind, we'll pick up Jared and bring him with us, and you and Allison can meet us here at the office. We should be there in about 15 minutes and back at the office in 30 minutes."

"Thanks, Jaiden; you getting Jared would be a big help. I can't leave the office for 20 minutes or so, and Allison has her hands full with the babies right now." "That's fine."

Do Peyton and I have your permission to do what we need to do when we get the boys to the office?

"Man, don't ask such a question; you know you do; I trust everybody in your practice implicitly, and any time my children need you, just let me know and then do what you must to help them. We'll get there as quickly as possible. "Great. Thanks much, Pete." "Yes, Sir, thank you."

"Dr. Jaiden, the boys are sitting in my office; let's go get them so you can check them over."

"Daddy! I hurt my arm, and so did Jared. My arm hurts bad." Really, you aren't crying!" "Big boys don't cry, Daddy, and if they do, Alaina Noelle will sucker punch 'em and tell them to grow a set." "Alaina Noelle will do WHAT!" "She'll punch them, tell them to stop crying, and grow a set!"

"Where in the world did Alaina learn to say that?"

"She said she heard Uncle Charley say it to Chuck once." "Hmm."

That's interesting, Abraham; I'll have to ask Uncle Charley about that and tell your Uncle Dale what Alaina Noelle said.

"Daddy."

"Yes, son, don't tell them I told you. If they tell Alaina, she'll sucker punch me; it hurts when she does that. Jaiden and Dr. Sims laughed at Abraham's request, and Jaiden said, "Abraham, I promise I won't tell them you told me that about your sister." The secretary took the boys to get their things, and while they were gone, Jaiden and Dr. Sims laughed about what Abraham said.

"Dr. Sims, has Alaina been too free with her punishments for the boys?" "Oh no, quite the contrary, Dr. Jaiden. No boy in her class will act up; they're all scared of that girl. It's the best first-grade class we have in the school. Nobody is ever out of line or talks too much. I wish I had an Alaina in every classroom."

"Dr. Sims, I would never wish that on you!" Both men heartily laughed when Jaiden said that. Of course, Jaiden would have fun telling Dale and Charley what Dr. Sims said about Alaina Noelle.

When Jaiden and Peyton got to the office with the boys, Pete and Allison were waiting for them. The school had also called the house, so Ginny went around the corner to get the Gray's twins and keep them so Allison could go to Jaiden's office with Pete. "High, guys, come on back, and let's check these boys from head to toe."

"Ashley, please call X-ray and set up radial X-rays for Abraham's and Jared's arms, and tell them to bill it to me here at the office." "Yes, Dr. Jaiden, I'll do that right now."

"Jaiden, you shouldn't pay for Jared's X-rays; I should."

"Pete, a little secret for you: if I tell them to bill me here at the office, the X-rays get done, get read, and the bill gets lost – so to speak." "Dang, Jaiden, that's mighty nice of you to do that for us." "No, it's not; it's a tiny payment forward for everything you've done to help Peyton, Richard, and me on the adoption front and the work you have done to protect the many abused children."

"That was purely my honor and pleasure, Jaiden." "I know, Pete, but still..."

Jaiden and Peyton took the boys to get their X-rays with Pete and Allison in tow. Jaiden looked at each X-ray after they were developed and after the radiologist read the films and dictated a report to him.

Each boy had a break just below their elbows, and each needed to be set and have a cast applied. That meant that each boy would need a general anesthetic for the bones to be fixed; not much, but just enough to knock them out for a few minutes.

Jaiden looked at Allison and said, "Allison, my dear, enjoy the peace and quiet for the next several hours because both boys will sleep for about two hours once they get home."

"Jaiden, if it wouldn't get me in trouble with Pete and Peyton, I would kiss you." Pete looked at Allison and said, I don't care, sweetheart, have at it; it's not like he will start chasing you after one kiss."

"Pete, it won't happen after five kisses; I am too much in love with Peyton." They all laughed.

They got the boys back to Jaiden and Peyton's office and told them they were going to have to have a cast on their arms. Jaiden suggested that since they went somewhere on the playground where they weren't supposed to go, he thought a pink cast would be appropriate. Both boys vehemently objected to pink, but Jaiden held to his guns on that issue.

As he started placing the cast on Jared's arm and Peyton was applying Abraham's, the first two layers to wrap the cotton base were pink, causing the boys to tear up; however, each wrap of the plaster tape after that was a royal blue which pleased the boys immensely.

Jaiden smiled when he looked at Pete and Allison and said, "Pete, you're the lawyer and the expert on punishments the court gives little boys who do things they aren't supposed to do. What do you think Dr. Sims should do to punish the boys for going outside the boundaries of the playground?"

Allison knew what Jaiden was doing, and it was tough for her not to bust out laughing. Finally, Pete answered Jaiden, saying, "I think Dr. Sims ought to get his paddle off his office wall and wear the boys' butts out. Maybe that would teach them to stay where they are supposed to be."

"You know, Pete, that's a good idea. When he hits a boy's butt with that paddle, I hear he lifts them off the ground. They glanced at the boys when Jaiden said that, and their eyes showed sheer terror.

"Yes, Pete, I'll call Dr. Sims and suggest that. And another thing, don't you think they should have to do schoolwork for the recess hour for a month before they can go back outside for recess?"

"That's a good idea, Jaiden; suggest that to Dr. Sims."

Jaiden said, "OK, Pete, I'll do that!" knowing he wouldn't. He and Pete just wanted to make the boys think about what they had been doing when they got hurt.

"Thanks for everything, Jaiden; how much do I owe you for everything?"

"Pete, let me suggest this: when we get the boys home, you spank yours real good, and I'll spank my boy, and that should settle the bill, don't you think."

Good suggestion, Jaiden. We ought to make them eat Brussels sprouts for dinner too."

"The only problem with that, Pete, is that the children at my house love those things. But you know what, we could go to the country club tonight, they have French snails on the menu, and I bet Abraham and Jared would love to eat some snails like the ones in our flower beds." Pete smiled as tears rolled from the boys' eyes. They had finally touched a nerve in the children.

Peyton looked at the boys and said, "Fellas, your dads are pulling your leg. They aren't going to have Dr. Sims spank you, and they aren't going to make you eat snails. If they try to do that, they will have to deal with me, and I promise you, they don't want to do that - or make your momma mad, Jared."

Allison said, "Amen to that, Dr. Peyton; besides, I have a lot of chores the boys could do while they are out of school the next couple of days." Jaiden and Pete smiled at Allison's comments, and the boys paid attention to those smiles and wondered what chores Allison was discussing. Of course, nothing had crossed Allison's mind; she was helping the dads keep the angst up in the boys.

"You know, Allison, the boys aren't going to be able to swim in the ocean in England with those casts on their arms; what do you think we need to do with them while all the other children are at the beach and the amusement parks riding all the fun rides?"

"Oh, I hear the hotel has good babysitters; maybe we can get one to stay with Abraham and Jared and make them read books instead of watching television. "When we go to the restaurants, we can take something to the hotel for the boys to eat in the room. However, I don't know if they need to eat a lot of food from the seafood buffet.

Talk about two boys sulking; you have never seen the likes of two boys sulking as Jared and Abraham did. It was hilarious and hard for the parents not to laugh."

Now the parents had to figure out how long to let the boys worry about not having so much fun in England before telling them they were joking to make them think about what they had done to hurt themselves.

When the boys got home, they went to their rooms and lay on their beds, thinking about how they wouldn't have as much fun as their siblings while in England. Jaiden gave Abraham an hour to sulk and then went to his room to tell him it was time for some punishment and that he needed to go to the deck with him.

When they got to the deck, Jaiden held Abraham, kissed his little face, and said, "Abraham, you will be able to go swimming at the beaches in England, and ride the rides at the amusement parks with your brothers and sister and with your friends."

"Mr. Pete, Mrs. Allison, and Daddy Peyton, and I wanted you to think about what you did when you got hurt so that maybe you wouldn't take a chance like that and get hurt again; that's all. We aren't mad at you; nobody will punish you for what happened."

"Son, do you understand what Daddy is telling you?" "Yes, sir, Daddy; I love you too." Jaiden and Peyton melted when Abraham said that. It was his indication that he knew his daddies loved him, and were thinking about what was best for him. He, indeed, was one smart little boy.
