Friends James Hocking, Jamie's dad Esther Hocking -- Jamie's mom From Chapter 22: "Jason won't be in for another ten minutes, but that's okay -- there's about a ten minute wait." Just what I didn't want to hear. I don't know why. Funny thing was -- if things were working out for him like I suspected -- he was kind of in a father-son type relationship too. WHAT AM I THINKING! I screamed to myself silently. I'm not in any relationship! This is just a guy I met -- that's all! Chapter 23 When he dropped me off, I thanked him profusely for helping me out during the day. We did exchange phone numbers before he left. I thought about the way Jason was smiling at us as he served us. I thought about the way he winked at me before we left the restaurant. There were of course messages on my phone when I got into the house. I was about to listen to them, almost dreading it. I was almost annoyed. Then I thought, "Wow! A couple years ago I felt sorry for myself because I didn't have any friends! Look at me now. I actually walked over to the mirror and looked! There was a MAN looking back from the mirror! When did that happen? Less than a year ago I was a geeky, gawky boy -- it seemed. And yet Rennie saw something there! But my face has filled out, my teeth somehow straightened themselves! Well, I know why that was. My parents' friend was my dentist. He convinced my dad not to let my mom put braces on me. He told them that a young person isn't fully developed until sometimes into their 20's and that most often, the teeth will straighten out as the face, head and mouth fully develop. I guess he was right. He said that orthodonture was a racket! They convince parents that their kid barely 12 years old needs their teeth straightened, then they take those wonderful new teeth and ruin them with appliances and things that prevent good dental hygiene. Anyway, I also had grown into my nose. I hated it when I was in junior high! It wasn't a nose -- it was a beak! My almost invisible brows and lashes had darkened and thickened. Not like Tom's, but they were now at least visible. I smiled and then laughed at myself. I returned to the phone happily. BEEP! "Hi." Came the sad voice of Lennie. "You didn't call. Well, anyway -- I just wanted to say hi." CLICK! I deleted it. BEEP! "Hey pardner!" It was Ricky. "Call me back as soon as you get home!" BEEP! "Okay, I didn't call just to say hi. I really really really miss you! Please call!" I deleted it again, but -- there was a pain in my chest. But it was not as bad as it was a few days ago. His meeting with Ty helped that out! RRIINGGG! "Hello?" "Hi!" Silence. "Um -- is this Lenny?" "Yeah. Who's this?" "Heh! It's Tom -- Officer Whatley?" "Oh. OH! Hi. What's up?" "I was -- just -- um -- well I wanted to be sure I wrote your phone number down right. Guess I did." "Guess so." I was at a loss for what to say. He called me and now didn't have anything to say. "You thanked me for taking you home -- and stuff -- well, I just wanted to tell you -- I mean I didn't before you went in the house, but - - I really liked -- talking with you." "Thanks. Me too." "Oh. Well, okay. Anyway, thanks. Bye." "Bye." Hmmmmmmm. BEEP! "Hi! This is Jamie! Everything go okay after we parted? Well, you know my number! See yah!" BEEP! "WOW! Who was that hunk!?? Did you -- well, you can tell me later! Hee hee! There's something about a man in uniform!! Come by the restaurant later if you get a chance. I want to talk to you about something - else. Well, see yah soon -- I hope." I sat down on the couch -- or rather flopped down on it. Close to a year ago, I was a frustrated boy, too shy to hardly even talk to anyone -- except a little crippled kid at the university. I was frustrated that I felt all these feelings that I was afraid to even ask anyone about. Frustrated and worried that people would wonder why I didn't date -- at all. Now I have more guys interested in me than I can handle. What do I do? I've had sex with 4 -- no 5 -- or was it -- my gosh! Am I becoming a slut? It doesn't seem to be bad -- when it's happening - but I know that many think it is. I am almost 19. That seems old to me -- and yet Tom is 36 and he seems young! But he's NOT young. Why would a guy that old and mature be interested in a young, immature guy like me? Jason. I don't know what to think about Jason. He's sexy. He's extremely cute. He's married! But is that my responsibility? If he was interested in someone else, then it would be his responsibility. But I don't want to be any part of a reason that breaks up a family. Rennie. I feel like each day I'm pulling further away from him, and yet I still feel this ache in my heart for him. Do I just need to give him time to grow up? And for ME to grow up? Ricky. He's delightful! I really like him a lot! He is genuinely needy, but is that a reason to be in a relationship? Well, he does have a job now. Jamie. What a cute geek! And his parents are so nice! He's so naive and sweet. I like his innocence. Marcus and DeVon. Well, they just were a little too fast for my comfort. But their curly hair, dark skin, and those big round eyes were hard to resist. Tap tap tap! I got up and went to the door. It was more like I floated to the door. I felt almost drugged. When I opened the door, I saw Tom standing there in a uniform -- of sorts. They were shorts. VERY tight shorts that showed off all his anatomy. The sleeves of his uniform shirt were torn off to reveal bulging biceps. The front was open to his navel and his chest was covered with hair. I reached out to pull him in before someone from the big house saw him. He kind of floated in like a heavy balloon. I decided this must be a dream! "Yes, it is!" he said. "What?" I asked. "It is a dream, silly! Why are you dreaming about me?" I looked into his eyes and it wasn't him any more. It was my dad. He had a disgusted look on his face. I shook my head and Tom's face reappeared. He was smiling, and unbuttoning the last button at the bottom of his shirt. I watched as he pulled one side of the shirt out then the other. I smiled up at him, noticing the reaction in my groin. But it wasn't him any more. It was Rennie. He reached for me and I seemed to float back away from him. He took a step toward me and the distance between us became about 25 yards. My living room just stretched to make room. Finally I was against the wall. He started running toward me and all of a sudden the room was again its normal size and I was nose to nose with -- Ricky! His shirt was off and he had my jammer bottoms on him. He tilted his head and closed his eyes, letting his face close in on mine. I closed my eyes and our lips met. OHHhhhh, those wonderful lips! I moaned a little and opened my eyes. It was Marcus! I pushed him away. I panicked. This suddenly was scaring me. I tried to run, but it was like I was glued to the spot. He reached out to me and I screamed. I felt as if any moment I was going to die! I felt his hands on my hair, stroking my head. "Shhhh. It's okay, baby -- it's okay." I opened my eyes. Tom was there again, holding me close; he was in his full uniform again. I collapsed in his arms. From far off I heard bells. They got closer. It was the phone! I woke up. "Hello?" "Hi, did you get my message?" I guess he realized that his accent would give him away. "Oh, hi Ricky! I just had the weirdest dream!" "Fall asleep studying?" "No -- I just sat down for a moment on the couch. I guess I was more tired than I realized." "Can I come over?" He asked. "Need a shower?" I asked. "No -- well, maybe -- but I just wanted to see you." "I have a lot of homework tonight, but -- maybe for a few minutes. OH! I can't come get you. My car is being fixed -- the windshield." "Okay, I'll walk." "Bring your clean clothes, so you can shower." "Wanna watch? Hee hee!" "I might!" "See you in a few!" I ran to the bathroom and checked out my hair, teeth and threw on another shirt. I stopped. "Why am I doing this?" I asked myself. Why was I getting so excited? I went back to the kitchen and looked in the fridge. Plenty of left over pizza and soft drinks for both of us. I knew I couldn't do any studying before he got here, so I sat down on the couch again and watched the news. When Ricky arrived, He was sweaty and hot. He ran all the way! I opened the door and he went straight for the showers. I went to the kitchen. He walked out, shirtless and his fly down, showing white boxers. "You comin'?" "Huh?" "I thought you wanted to watch." He said with a cute half grin on his face. "No -- you ASKED if I wanted to watch." "And you said you might!" "Well, `I might' also means `I might not', you know." He stuck out his lower lip and pouted. I started to say something but he interrupted me. "I know! No promises." That wasn't what I was going to say, but it was good enough for me. I stepped to him and sucked in his pouty lip and stuck my tongue softly into his mouth. It was met by his equally soft tongue and we both closed our eyes. He ran his hand down inside my belt. I pulled it out just as he was caressing my pubes. "Not now, Dude. I really can't afford to take this any further tonight -- homework, remember?" I hugged him closer and pushed him toward the bedroom door. While he was in the shower, the phone rang. It was Jason, calling from the restaurant. "Hi! Can you come tonight?" "I don't have transportation tonight. My car is being fixed." "Can I come over for a few minutes after my shift?" "Only for a few minutes?" "I promise!" "Okay." I heard him sigh. "Great. Thanks a lot!" I hung up the phone as Ricky came out. He was in clean pants and still shirtless. He was drying his hair. "Who was that?" "My great-aunt Sophie!" I said. "Really?" He asked. I gave him the look. "Oh. Ok. Sorry!" The microwave beeped. I asked him what he wanted to drink. "Beer?" "Sorry -- soft drinks are all I have!" "Root beer?" I got out a couple root beers. We sat down to a platter full of assorted pizza. I asked about Ty. "Ty's fine. He still goes out nearly every night." He said with a note of sadness. "You get lonely, huh?" "Yeah." I wasn't ready to fill his loneliness. But I got an idea. "Hey! I have someone you should meet." He got a dark, suspicious look on his face. "Who?" "A guy I met at school." "I'm not really interested - " "Why not?" I asked. "I want you!" "Well, you're gonna meet him eventually anyway. His parents are the best!" "They know about his - - " "Yes. And his brother too!" "What does his brother think about it?" "No! His brother's gay too -- and the parents know." "And that's cool with them?" "Yeah." "Cool." He said. RRINNGG! "Hello?" "Hi, Lenny. This is Jamie. Did you get my message?" "Yeah, but I have company." "Oh. Sorry." "No -- it's not like -- look, I want you to meet this guy." "Why?" "I just think you might -- well -- like him." "You mean as a boyfriend?" "Well -- not at first -- just a friend." "Is he - - gay?" "Duh!" "I -- I don't think I'm ready to - " "You have to meet other guys, Dude!" "I don't want other guys." I could hear the pout in his voice. "Well, anyway, I HAVE another guy here now, so - " "Okay. But my dad wants to talk to you." "Hello -- Leonard?" "Yes sir?" "I'm afraid I have some bad news." "WHAT!!??" "It's your mother. She's - " "Oh no!! She's dead?" "No. She's okay -- well sort of. She had a stroke. I heard about it last night at our C of C meeting. Your dad is taking it pretty badly." He waited for me to react. I didn't say anything. "I -- I think you should go see him -- and her. It's times like this that family needs to pull together." "He -- he -- could have called!" I said, bitterly. "Leonard -- it's time for you to show him a better way. I'll go with you if you want." "I've got no transportation. My car is being fixed." "Can I come pick you up now?" "I - " I looked at Ricky. His eyes were as round as pie plates. "I -- guess so." I forgot to tell him how to get here. But he was gone before I could call back. "It's okay. Jamie says he knows the way." His mom said. "What's going on?" Ricky said. "My mom! She had a stroke." "What's that?" "It's when a blood clot -- or something -- blocks an artery going to the brain, so that part of the brain starts to die from lack of oxygen. It happens very quickly." "Wow! And that happened to your mom?" "Apparently." "I'm so sorry! Is there anything I can do?" "I -- don't think -- well, yeah. Do you know how to pray?" "Yeah!" He said almost sounding defensive. "Okay. Pray for my mom. And - - pray for me!" I said. "And your dad?" I hesitated a long time, then said, "Yeah, I suppose." I heard a car pull into the driveway. "They're here." "Okay. I'll walk home." "NO! Your motel is right on the way to the hospital. We'll take you home." When we got down to the car, Mr. Hocking said, "I'm going in with you -- to support your dad. Jamie really shouldn't be there. Rather than waiting in the car -- or just driving around -- can he stay here until we get back?" Jamie was making like a prayer in the back seat as if to say, "pleeeeeze?" "Sure. Hey! Would you mind staying with him, Ricky?" I didn't tell him it was the guy I wanted him to meet. Only Jamie knew that. Jamie cringed a little. "Jamie -- this is Ricky." "Hey!" they both said. Jamie got out of the car and I gave them the key to the door. We were about to leave, when Ricky stopped and said, "Um -- er -- actually I don't know how to pray, Lenny!" I called them closer to the car and they got in. It was crowded, but I said a prayer. When we walked into the waiting room, my dad was there -- obviously shaken -- a lot! He saw me first. He looked like he wanted to run. "Oh! How did you -- ?" Then he saw Mr. Hocking. "James -- how did -- do you know my son?" "Yes. I brought him here, Randal. I felt he needed to see his mom." Mr. Hocking said it with a certain authority that my dad couldn't argue with. "Well, they kicked me out -- for an exam and cat-scan. He'll have to wait." I heard it: "He'll have to wait." He couldn't even say it to me! "Uhmm - " I started, "how is she, Dad?" He turned to Mr. Hocking and said, "She's stable. She can't - " Mr. Hocking saw me cringe. "Randal -- come with me outside. Leonard will get us if you're needed." Dad looked at the floor -- not once directly at me -- and said -- "okay." Mr. Hocking told me basically what he said to my dad outside: "Randall -- I have something I want to tell you." "What?" "My son is gay." "Oh. And -- how are you handling that?" "Esther and I knew it before Jamie did." "But how - " "Just like you and Minnie knew YOUR son was gay long before he told you, Randal!" Dad was stopped cold. Mr. Hocking went on: "Randal -- Esther and I did all the research we could. It's not their fault. It's not their fault, Randal! Do you understand that?" "Whaddaya mean? Is it my fault, then?" "Probably not directly. Randal, do you think your son CHOSE to be gay?" "Yes -- well, n -- I don't know!" "I ASSURE you he did not! Neither did our Jamie. The reason I brought you out here is -- I'm hoping you'll reconsider your stand -- against your own son. He didn't choose this -- and it's not his fault." "But he and that Goodwin boy - " "Did they have sex, Randal?" "I can only assume -- I don't want to imagine what they have done!" "And -- you feel this is immoral?" "YES!" "Randal -- did you ever have sex before you got married?" "N -- n -- that's none of your business." "Then you did! That's immoral -- right?" "Yeah, but it was with a - " "Doesn't matter, Randal. The Lord calls it fornication. Have you had sex with anyone else AFTER you were married?" "James! I don't see what - " "You can't answer that simple question, Randal? That tells me a lot. Well, I can tell you this: Your adultery -- if you did it -- is worse than two teens -- or two people any age -- having sex, no matter what their sex is!" "But - " "The truth is, Randal you're ashamed and embarrassed. Right?" "DAD!" I hollered. We can go in!" My dad looked directly into my eyes. "Thanks for coming." Then he looked away. We followed a nurse into where Mom was. She looked at my dad and me -- side by side -- and smiled from her right side of her face. The other side was paralyzed. I wanted to cry, but restrained myself. I bent down and hugged her. "I've missed you, mom." "Mm --t y oo" She croaked out. It took all I had to not break down. "Minnie -- everything's gonna be alright." My dad said. He looked at me then back at her, "Everything!" A tear came out of her right eye, as she smiled on that side. "I'm sorry gentlemen, that's all she can take for tonight. Doctor wants her to rest." "I love you mom!" I said. "Wv tm." She tried. Another tear. I turned and walked out, leaving Dad and Mom. As soon as I got out, I ran for the waiting room and out the entrance door. I headed for the nearest flower bed. I threw up all the pizza I had earlier eaten. When I was finished, I cried and cried. Mr. Hocking waited inside, seeing what I was doing. When I was mostly finished, he came out. "Leonard, it's not as bad as it looks." I looked at him. "The fact that she is speaking at all is a good sign. She will be okay pretty quick -- with help from her family." "Really?" I cried. "How do you - " "I went through it with both my dad and my mom. I think your mom's gonna be okay." "What did you say to my dad?" That's when he told me what went on outside. "So -- you told him about Jamie?" "Yeah. Your dad may not be ready to admit it to the world yet -- but at least he might be ready to admit it to himself." "Shoot! I don't know if I'M ready to admit it to the world yet!" I said. "Same with Jamie." Mr. Hocking came up to my flat. The other guys were watching the TV -- well the TV was on, anyway. The door was locked and so we had to knock. A very awake looking Ricky came to the door. "Hi! How's your mom?" "Mr. Hocking here thinks she's not too bad off. It was a shock to see her like that." "I'll bet. Me'n Jamie's been getting' acquainted -- like you was sayin'." "Good! I'm - " "DAD!" Jamie exclaimed. "Son?" Jamie came running to his dad like a six year old. "Dad! Can Ricky spend the night -- tonight?" "If you -- want. Should we go by his house and get him some clean clothes and tell his parents?" "I don't live with my parents, sir. It's me an' my cousin. We live in a motel." "And your cousin -- should we tell him you won't be home?" "He may not be home himself sir. We don't really keep tabs on each other." "Oh. Well! Okay. Are you going to be okay here by yourself, Leonard?" Mr. Hocking Asked. "I'm used to it, sir. And I have a lot of homework I have to catch up on." "Well, if you need anything, please call, okay?" "Thanks! Uncle Jake usually takes pretty good care of me." "Yeah -- this is where Jake Smith lives isn't it! He's your uncle?" "Sort of." "Okay. See you later. Please come by any time!" "Thanks! Bye!" On an impulse, I threw my arms around him. He gave me a stiff-bodied hug. "Bye!" I said bye to my other two friends, and they drove away. I watched them leave, convincing myself I was happy that Ricky and Jamie hit it off so well. I shut the door and went to my desk. I took one look at my books and notebooks and decided maybe I could get by NOT studying tonight. I was exhausted. I'm sure that my professors would understand. I went into the bedroom and shucked off my clothes, letting them fall on the floor. My jammers were on the other side of the bed, but I was too tired to bother. I fell on my bed and was just pulling the covers up when I heard pounding at the door. I looked at the clock. 11:30 PM. OH! Jason! I'm not ready for this! I ran to the door and opened it a crack. "Come in! Just a minute, while I get something on." "Heh! Got someone special in there?" "My mom had a stroke tonight." "OHhhh! I'm sorry!" "I'll be right back." I went and grabbed my jammers and was pulling on the top as I came back out. "So -- what was so important that you needed to come over tonight?" I asked. "Well -- compared to your problems right now, nothing." "No -- it's okay. You're here now. Shoot!" "I -- I mean -- well, you know -- I moved in with Dave." "Dave? Oh, David! -- yeah?" "I -- I don't know what to do, Lenny. I need advice. The only person I know older than I am is David, and I can't ask him." "Is he -- um -- coming on to you?" "No! Nothing like that!" He squirmed quite a bit. "Well, not EXACTLY like that." It's me! I want to come on to him! What's wrong with me, Lenny? He's twice my age!" I thought about Tom. Tom is twice MY age! And I -- wanted -- him! "What difference does age have to do with it?" I finally asked. "That's what I want to know! I have thought about it so much and I can't think of any reason that - " "How about your kids?" He stared blankly at me. "and your wife. Are you ready to throw all that away?" "What -- why should I throw that away?" "I don't know, Jason. I'm only 19 myself, but it seems to me that a kid needs his dad in the house with him. If you mess around -- aren't you playing with fire? If there is a chance you and your wife can get back together -- well, I can't tell you what to do." "No -- that's why I came to you! But -- as long as Dave and I are together -- can't we - - ?" "Are you asking my permission? It's not mine to give. I'm just giving you something to think about. "Oh. Well, don't worry -- I will think about it. He hasn't shown the slightest interest really. It's all been me." "If I remember, the first night you guys met -- he had come from meeting with his wife -- to try to reconcile. "Oh. Yeah, I guess that's right. Well, sorry to bother you. I guess I better let you get back to sleep. Hope your mom's okay." We both got up. I gave him a hug, and he left. I locked the door and shut off all the lights. I went back to my bed. It kept echoing in my head: "What's wrong with me, Lenny? He's twice my age!" "He's twice my age!" "- twice my age!" "Twice!" "TWICE!" Tom is twice MY age! "What difference does age have to do with it?" "What difference does age have to do with it?" "What difference does age have to do with it?" "What difference?" "age?" I dreamed all night about my sexy policeman. We didn't do anything in my dream. I just kept seeing him, wanting him, but couldn't get myself to believe he would want an 18 year old! I saw him like in the earlier dream -- then with all his uniform on. When I woke up in the morning, for once my dick was limp! Don't ask me why! It definitely was NOT a wet dream! I woke up with a strong urge to be with him, but knew he couldn't possibly be interested in a teenager! So I pushed that out of my head and got up. I had an early class, so I was out the door soon after I got up, to catch a bus to the university. My car was to be ready in the early afternoon. I was on my way into my first class when my cell phone rang. "Hello?" "Hi! This is Tom." "T -- OH! HI!!!" "I just wanted to tell you -- well -- if you need some help picking up your car -- I would be glad to take you to the auto glass shop." "That is so sweet of you! Thanks. I'm here until 1:00 and then I wanted to go see my mom." "Is there a problem?" "Yeah. She had a stroke." "Oh no! I'm so sorry! Oh jeez! When did you find out?" "Actually it was yesterday after you dropped me off." "Aw shit! I'm sorry I wasn't there for you!" "What?" "I should have come in." "I had studying to do -- or so I thought. No, it's fine. And it's not as if I was alone." "Oh?" "My friend Ricky came over and was here when I got the news." "Okay. Well, I'll be there at one." "No -- really. I can take the bus to the hospital." "Well, if you're sure. Call me if you need any assistance -- okay?" "Thanks, Tom." "You can call me Tommy." "Oh. Thanks. See yah!" Why was I reacting this way to him? Twice my age! And he couldn't possibly be interested in me. He's just being a nice guy! Notes: Is someone in denial again? Comments are welcomed. Please send them to Steve at s4d@hotmail.com.
