We had driven over six hours to make it to our wedding site so we could get our license on this Friday and be married the following day. I was up and had barely slept, but neither had Corey. We didn't have sex and hadn't in a week to make our wedding night that much more special. "Matt, today is almost as big as tomorrow," Corey stated while we were in bed. "It is. It's really hard to believe it's finally here," I said. "Very hard to believe," he said. "Say, let's just get up and get going. We've got to get our license and then we need to check out our place to make sure everything is just how we want it," I said. We got up and showered for our day. We had so many suitcases and had to borrow two from Mom since we would be leaving after the wedding for our honeymoon. We got dressed and headed out in this small town to find something for breakfast. After we ordered, I sat going through the checklist of things I needed. Scott had been very helpful in some of the planning. The biggest help of all was that the place we were renting offered some catering and a full cash bar, along with getting a few flowers and someone to officiate our ceremony. Corey sat very quietly and tried eating his omelet. He didn't have to tell me how nervous and emotional he was. My biggest fear was he might not make it to the altar. The best thing we had going was Kris and Colt would be here about six to take some of the pressure off us. Also, I was staying with Kris while Corey would be with Colt before the wedding at a different hotel. We finished up eating and headed to the courthouse. It was about a twenty minute drive to the county seat. We found the courthouse and headed inside to the clerk's office. I had spoken to them earlier in the week and had all of our paperwork in my hand. We opened the door and went to the counter. A lady about my Mom's age came walking up. "Are you Corey and Matt?" she asked. "We are," I said. "Congratulations on your big day," she said. I handed her our paperwork, the fee and moved back to wait. Corey was standing with his hands in shorts when my phone rang. It was Mom telling me her and Vince were leaving and to see if we needed anything. I said we didn't and were about to get our license. The lady came back and held out our license. Corey stood there staring at it. "Now, Miss Caldwell will return this to us next week. We'll mail you a copy after it is recorded." "So we will be married tomorrow?" I asked and felt stupid asking that. "You will. Good luck to both you young men. I hope you have a wonderful life together," she said. "Thanks," I said with the license in my hand. We began walking to our car. "Matt, I have to stop being so fucking emotional about this. Deep inside, I'm so happy it's not even real. I just feel such a burden to others like Garrett, Brennan, Jordy and Reese. We're pioneers for them." "We are, but we're just like Juan and Felicia... well not exactly. We're getting married because we love each other. Corey, think of it as just another step in our journey together." "I do, but it is one big step. Maybe we should have waited..." "Nonsense. We'll be so relieved and just so happy when it's over," I said and got in to drive. I had driven us the entire way since Corey said he wasn't up to the task. Corey leaned over the console and kissed my cheek. He took the marriage license and stared it. "Unbelievable, but one great moment for us," he said. "It is hard to believe," I said and drove away. Corey started naming off those he hoped would show up to our wedding. He was almost certain JJ and Teague would come but wasn't sure if his cousin Heath was coming or not. We named off name after name that we hoped would make the trip to share our day with us. Since it was a trip it would be understandable if some couldn't make it. I drove up to the site of our wedding. It was what I called the middle of nowhere. Corey and I got out and looked around at the small hotel before spotting the wedding area. We went inside the office and asked to speak to Leslie, who was coordinating our wedding. The desk clerk called her. She asked that we meet her in the reception area since she was making plans for a small wedding that night in the same location. We walked inside and saw a small young lady. She walked straight up to us. "It's great to finally meet the lucky couple in person. So who's Matt and who's Corey?" she asked. "I'm Corey," he replied. "Leslie, I know we're early but we were anxious to see the spot in person," I stated. "That's not a problem," she said. "Is there anything we can do that you can think of?" I asked. "Matt, I think everything is under control right now. Here's the plan. Tomorrow you try to be here about one. I think... ummm... the guy that is helping you out is going to be here at noon," she said. "Scott. He said he was going to get here early to make sure everything is perfect," I said. "The lady will meet with you together and go over the ceremony..." "Ummm... we're going to be old fashioned and not see each other until the moment we get married," Corey said. "Well then I guess she'll explain it to you separately. Scott said he had two songs. Is that right?" she asked. "I think so," I said. She continued to go over things and showed us the configuration of the reception area. A random thought popped in my head. "Cake! I've forgotten all about a cake!" "Matt, I'm glad you said something. I just assumed you would have one or maybe two..." "Oh my God!" Corey yelled. "I'm sorry," I said and was beginning to panic. Leslie walked over and patted my shoulder, "I'll call in a favor with the bakery here in town. It may not be anything fancy..." "Who cares? I can't believe this!" I exclaimed with sweat mounting on my forehead. "Calm down. You've had so much to worry about," Corey said and took my hand. "It may be just two layers and simple. I suppose one cake will suffice, even though we usually have two cakes, one being the groom's cake, but in this case one should do," Leslie said. We walked out to the wedding area that was set up for the wedding that night. Leslie said it would be the same. Now, I was in deep worry mode and was trying to believe she'd come through with a cake. We headed off to our hotel room, which would be for Corey and Colt that night. We didn't rent rooms for them for our wedding night since we assumed they'd drive back. "Corey, I can't believe I forgot all about our cake. Come to think of it, it was never on my list," I lamented while driving off. "She said she'd have one. Have faith." "I'm trying. I'm really trying to have faith she will come through. I just knew I was missing something. Fuck!!!" Corey started laughing. "Thanks, Matt. I needed something to get my mind off of things. I knew I could count on you." I laughed but really wanted to cry. "I'm glad I could help. Of all things." By the time we arrived back at our hotel room, my head was beginning to throb. It was the stress of everything coming together. I actually had about talked myself into believing how everything would be perfect but deep inside I was still stressing about each detail, hoping our wedding would be as perfect as possible. Corey turned on the TV and invited me to sit next to him on our bed that he made. I found some Tylenol and took them before accepting his offer. He put his arm around me and kissed me on the lips. "Reality is really setting in on both of us right now." "In a big way," I said. "Maybe we should've just eloped. It'd have been so much easier, and less expensive." "I might encourage Kris and Colt to do that when their time comes. I had been pretty good..." He smiled, "You had. I've been the cry baby about this." We sat watching TV until I was yawning and feeling sleepy. Since neither of us slept well the night before it was my body's way of saying I needed rest. I curled up and was soon asleep with Corey holding me. I woke up about 2 hours later and felt very refreshed with my headache subsided. The thought of not having a wedding cake was still on my mind while my brain tried to think of anything else omitted. Corey woke up about twenty minutes later, just before Mom called to tell me she and Vince had made it to the hotel where we were. VJ wasn't able to make it since he was leaving the next day for an international study in Germany for a month. Corey and I left to find their room and spend a few private minutes with them. Vince opened the door and allowed us into their room. I walked over and gave Mom a big hug and kiss. "Mom, you're not going to believe this but we forgot all about a cake," I stated. "The lady at the place said she'd take care of it though," Corey added. "I can't imagine how hard it has been on you two organizing a wedding this far from home," Vince said. "I still can't wait to see your wedding spot," Mom said. "It's so hard to believe the day is almost here." "We can't either," I said. We stayed around and talked with them for about an hour. Vince called to get us reservations at about the only nice place in town so we wouldn't have to wait. We left and were able to get refreshed before going out to dinner. It was nearly seven before Kris and Colt showed up in Faith's car. Corey and I were hungry but we were excited to see them. Corey and I drove our vehicle but stopped down the road so I could check into the other hotel room for the night. We arrived at the restaurant, which was a little drive away. Mom and Vince were waiting on us. Mom gave Kris and Colt a nice hug once we saw them. We were quickly shown our table and were happy it was a little secluded in a back corner. We took a seat and looked at the menu before Vince said it was on him. "Linda, are you nervous about tomorrow?" Kris asked. "Oh a little nervous and excited," Mom replied. "Are Walt and Jenny making it?" "They are," Kris replied. "Mom is coming too," Colt added. "That's awesome," I said. "Are Chase and his son coming?" Mom asked. "That's why Mom is coming," Colt laughed. "Tabor and Deer are supposed to come too." "Everybody wants to see this," Kris said with our waitress there for our drinks. The four of us had a beer while Mom and Vince had a glass of wine. "How many are we expecting?" Vince asked. "We're guessing around 30 since it's not that convenient," Corey replied. "Bro, we've named off over 10 so far. I betcha there will be over 40 people," Kris stated with us getting our drinks. We ordered our meals with everyone having steak. Vince held up his glass and toasted Corey and me. I told Kris and Colt about the cake and got a good laugh out of them for forgetting. My stomach knotted up each time the thought entered my head. We got our salads and began eating them. Kris and Colt talked about their jobs with Kris bragging how he was finished until July. Our steaks arrived while we were chatting. They were nice size and very juicy. They really hit the spot. Just as we were getting up from the table I heard a phone going off. We looked at each other before Corey realized it was his. He pulled it from his pocket and showed me it was JJ calling. Instantly, I knew he had arrived in town by Corey's tone and his words. He hung up with a smile on his face. "JJ wants us to meet him at the hotel and go out," Corey said. "Bro, we can do that," Kris said. "Where's he at?" "He's at my hotel. He just checked in," Corey replied. "That'll be fun," Colt said. "We never did get to give y'all a real bachelor's party." "I'd say y'all have plans tonight," Vince said and stood. We thanked Vince for the nice meal and walked out. It was just before nine when I got in the car. "Wow, I wasn't expecting JJ until tomorrow," Corey said. "Surely, Teague is with him," I said. "I guess, but he wouldn't tell me who was," Corey said. "We'll have a fun night." "I suspect you will," I said. "Don't expect me to hang around very long. I want you to have a fun night with your friends one last time." "Good luck dragging Kris away." "Well... it's not like they're his friends. So maybe it won't be a big deal," I said. We arrived at Corey's hotel and saw JJ standing out in the parking lot with three other guys. "Damn, I expected Teague but not Heath," Corey said opening the door. "Who's the other guy?" I asked. "I don't know," Corey replied. We got out with Colt parking next to us. Corey walked over and gave big handshakes to JJ, Teague and Heath. "I'll be damned," Corey said. "Phillip, how are you doing?" "I'm great, Corey," Phillip replied. Phillip was another of Corey's high school friends. "I hope you don't mind him being here. I was talking to him a few weeks ago and mentioned about you getting married," JJ said. "Hell, he doesn't mind," Kris said with Mom and Vince walking up. "Linda and Vince, this is Heath, my cousin," Corey said. "That's JJ, Teague and Phillip. I went to high school with them." "Alright, but who is she?" Teague asked. "Sorry, this is Matt's mom and step dad," Corey laughed before they shook their hands. "What about us?" Colt asked. "Sorry. JJ and Teague know Kris and Colt," Corey laughed. "This is such a surprise." "We wanted to surprise you a little and take ya out tonight before the big day tomorrow," Phillip stated. "Bros, let's go," Kris said. We waved goodbye to Mom and Vince. "We're just gonna head across the street to that joint down there," JJ pointed. "That's convenient," I said. "Y'all can walk home." "Stagger might be more like it," Heath said and laughed. "We're dragging Corey's big ass back here." "Good luck," Kris said. We started across after Kris threw his bag in my vehicle. I grabbed Kris by the arm and pulled him back. "Hey, I don't wanna stay very long. I'm gonna let Corey have his night out." "No problem, bro," Kris said and patted my shoulder. We walked down and could hear the country music blaring before getting to the door. We got to the door and saw some band was playing tonight and there was a cover charge. The others paid for me and Corey to enter. The place was dark, loud and smelled like smoke. Kris headed to the bar and returned with the first round of drinks for everyone but me. We found a big table for the eight of us. After the first round, I announced Kris and I were heading off. "Corey, I'll see you tomorrow," I said. "You will," Corey said and kissed me. Fear ran through my veins that some homophobic person would see us kissing. I think we escaped without any problem. Kris and I headed back and got to our hotel room. Now I had to carry my bag along with my suit up to our room. Our room was nice and rather new with double beds. Kris headed to the bathroom while I hung up my suit and placed my bag on the dresser. He came out and was naked. He walked over and jumped on top of one of the beds. "Matt, are you going to join me?" Kris asked. "Ummm..." "You don't need to worry. I don't expect us to fuck tonight, we kind of got that out of the way the last time we were together. I was just getting comfortable," Kris said. I smiled, "I guess so. You know it will be like old times." "It will be," Kris said while I got undressed and got on top of the bed. "Do you think we should turn out the light? We always talked better when the lights were off," I joked. "You can after I fall asleep. Bro, this is it. It's the end of us as we know it," Kris stated. The way he put really hit me in the gut. "Kris, it is not the end of us. I'd say once you move back things will be back to normal." "Still, tomorrow marks a big change no matter how you look at it. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but just the plain truth." "I just see it as progression but I know what you mean," I said. "Bro, I need your very honest opinion about something," Kris said and was sitting up straight so I thought it was something serious. "You'll get it. Fire away." "I was thinking of proposing to Melissa tomorrow at your reception. However, the more I think about it the more I don't think it'd be right. The last thing I want to do is take away from your big day..." I rubbed my chin. "If you don't there, then where?" "On our vacation. I was thinking I could have everyone around, including my parents, when I propose. On our vacation it would only be Faith and Colt around unlike someone else I know," Kris responded. "Kris, I don't see anything wrong with doing it there. It could be very sweet. Does Melissa know about this?" "Oh hell no. She doesn't even know I've bought the ring," Kris said and jumped off the bed. He went through his suitcase and returned with a box. He opened it up and showed me the nice ring. "Wow Kris, that's really nice," I said. "She'll be really shocked." "Not that I'm asking her but where I'm asking here will surprise her. Bro, we're really going to move back next year I'd say right at this time or a little after. I know we'll be married really close to home..." "I really wish we weren't here but there's little we can do about it," I said. "I think it'll work out just fine." "I hope so. I'm gonna worry until I see the cake," I stated. "Let me give you and Melissa some advice. Get a wedding planner. It's been hell." "I'll let her handle that shit. I'm gonna stay out of it," Kris said. "Good luck with that. Corey said the same thing but he did help. Scott has been a big help too," I said. "Matt, just count on you being in this same situation a year from now," Kris said. "I guess it's only fair," I said. "You know Kris, this is only appropriate we are like this. Me... you... talking like we used when we were freshmen." "I know. It's fucking awesome if you ask me. That's the one thing I really missed when we moved into the apartment. There was always something special about us just talking. I know you remember who we met first." "Of course, Scott and Juan. Hey, I wonder if Juan's coming," I said. "Something tells me he is," Kris said and smiled. "Bro, he should. We went to Vegas for his fucking wedding." "We did. That was kind of fun," I said. "I still remember the first time you met Corey. I knew right then you'd found someone. Then the shit hit the fan so to speak. I was actually a little surprised you took him back," Kris recalled. "Honestly, I was a little shocked I was attracted to him from the beginning. You remember I didn't date that many regular looking guys in high school," I said. "You found someone just like me and went for it," Kris laughed. "I guess I did, but someone who wasn't as hyper or as outgoing," I said. "Kris, I pretty much knew that I'd be hard pressed to find anyone close to Corey after the shit hit the fan. I think it's worked out just fine." "I'll say," Kris said. "I just remember my life being a living hell for a month." "I think you made my life a living hell more than I did yours," I said and laughed. "I probably did. Damn, we really had the best fucking college life ever," Kris said. "It's all thanks to you. I remember our agreement," I said. "Which one?" Kris laughed. "The one where you told me if I'd be sociable you'd study," I replied. "That one worked out for both of us. Hell, I got a degree thanks to you," Kris said. "What was your favorite trip?" I asked. "Wow... ummm... Holland maybe... wait the cruise... no, maybe our trip to the beach... fuck it, I loved all of them," Kris answered laughing. "It would be hard for me to pick one. Holland was special since it was a freebie," I said. "Confess to me you paid for that shit," Kris said. "Kris, I swear I won it, plus that would have been really expensive," I said. "Imagine how shocked I was." "I'll never believe you." "When have I ever kept a secret from you?" I asked. "Hmmm... I don't guess you have," Kris replied. "Other than nailing Corey's ass tomorrow night, what are you most excited about tomorrow?" "I guess seeing who comes. We did our best to invite anyone who would consider coming," I replied. "That's the part I'm excited about. It'll be like a reunion if everyone shows up. You're off to a good start I'd say." "I think so," I said. "I'm ready for it to be over, Kris. Corey and I have been so stressed about everything. You wouldn't believe how expensive everything is." "You're rolling," Kris said. "Hey, I liked all your pictures. Now if I can only talk Melissa into some naked shots. I thought that was fitting of you two." "I really liked them," I said. "I only sent you the nice ones. Some are private for me and Corey." "You dawg," Kris said and tossed a pillow at me. "You just said no secrets." I grabbed the pillow and went to hit him with it. He grabbed the pillow and took it from me. I ran back to my bed and curled up while Kris slammed the pillow on my naked body. He stopped and leaned over to kiss me. It was short and sweet. "Bro, I will always love you like my brother and best friend." "Same here, Kris," I said. "I guess it's time we got some shut eye. We'll be rested while Corey's ass will be hung over tomorrow," Kris laughed and headed to turn out the lights. "Thanks for everything you've ever done for me, Kris. You'll never know how much you've meant to me over the years and will continue to mean to me. Tomorrow does start a different chapter in my life but I suspect you'll still be a main character in it." "Thanks, bro. I can tell you meant every word of that. However, I'll just be a secondary character from now on since you will be married. I'm proud of you and always will be. You're showing a lot of courage tomorrow by doing something you want and not what others think." I got up and kissed him on the lips to show my dear appreciation for all the years he had my back. Mostly, it was for being the best friend any guy could ever have whether he was straight or gay. Kris will always have a special place in my heart and in my life no matter what happens.
