Chapter 6 The rest of the night was spent in bliss. Talking and becoming closer. Finally for the first time since Max showed up Evan didn't feel lost and trapped. He felt free, as if nothing could stand in his way. Before letting it get too late Evan pulled Max to him and whispered softly in his ear. "I wish I could stay like this forever but it's time we both get home." Max grinned and got up shaking the excess sand from his jeans. The two walked closely together to Evan's car. Before they knew it they were in front of Max's house. "So, I need to know what direction we're going." Max asked softly and unsure. "Well if you play your cards right you might have a boyfriend by the end of the week." Evan said planting a soft kiss on Max's lips, the kiss was so soft and tender that Max couldn't help but to let it linger. "I look forward to more of those." Max said, after another kiss he got out of the car and walked up the pathway to his door and went inside. Evan drove away after seeing his front door closed. He pulled into his driveway and entered his house, he beamed up the stairs to his bedroom and locked the door behind him. He shuffles around papers and finally found his drawing pad and flipped to the picture of Max, it was missing something before and know he knew what. He picked up his pencil and sketched some details in the eyes and the boy in the picture finally became the boy from his life. He lied back in his bed and held the picture close to him, falling asleep with the portrait of the one that he now loved unconditionally. "Evan! Get up! You're gonna be late for church!" Evan's mother called from the hallway. Evan groggily turned his head to his alarm clock and jumped up immediately. "SHIT!" He bolted out of bed into the bathroom and took the fastest shower ever. He got dressed quickly and flew downstairs, he found his family sitting and enjoying Sunday breakfast. When he took his seat across from his father everything got quiet and became tense. His father was the first to speak. "The Rattlesnakes won last night." He said softly. "Good." Evan said reaching for a glass and the pitcher of orange juice. The tense air became thicker and thicker by the second. "Do you want to tell me what went on down there and where you disappeared to?" His father asked pressing on, the tension threatening to break at any moment. "No. It doesn't matter anymore." Evan took a beat as if trying to decide if the consequences will out weight the worth of his next statement. "I'm quitting the team." An audible crack could be heard and the tension finally broke and the atmosphere turned violent. "You will not!" His father said sternly. "What about your scholarships? Playing college football?" "Dad I never wanted this. This is your dream! I want to art, I want to paint." Evan said defending himself. "You don't know what you want!" "No Dad! I know exactly what I want! This football thing, I hated it, but I only did it to make you happy. I've decided to apply to UCLA's Art program." "And destroy everything I've set up for you? This art thing makes you sound like a faggot." His father said disgustedly, Evan experienced a level of hurt that not even Christy's deceit could have matched if multiplied by a thousand. Evan abruptly got up and left the house almost taking off to his car in a sprint. He got in and immediately broke down, he drove off, tears flowing down his cheeks. He began driving in the direction of Christy and immediately turned around in the direction of Max. He pulled up to the house, turned off his car, and sat long enough to pull himself together. He walked up the pathway and knocked on the door. No response. He knocked again and a short woman came to the door. "Hi is Max home?" Evan asked the woman who he assumed to be his mother. She gave a slight nod with a smile "Maxie, there's someone here to see you." She called stepping away from the door. "Really? This early?" Max said, he came up to the door and blushed a little bit and a wide smile spread across his face. "Evan. Hi." "Sorry to bother you so early." Evan said quietly, Max was shirtless and wearing a pair of sweats. "No it's fine. Come in." Max said giving Evan room to enter. "Mom, we'll be upstairs." He called to his mother who was in the kitchen. "Okay, is your friend hungry?" Max just looked at Evan who nodded "Can you set an extra plate for him?" Max said, taking Evan's hand and leading him up to his room. He opened his room door and let Evan in first, closing the door behind him. He went over to Evan and planted a deep kiss on his lips, which was gladly accepted and returned. "So what brings you by?" Max said looking him in the eyes, he saw streaks from his face. "You've been crying. What happened?" "It's my dad. He-" He began to get choked up. "I told him that I wanted to be an artist not a football player, and the words he said." Evan began to sob and Max pulled him close and held him. "It's okay baby. I'm sure he didn't mean it. He was upset." Max said reassuringly. They lied back onto the bed and lied there for about 15 minutes until his mother called them down. Max peered over Evan and saw that he was indeed sleeping, Max quietly got up and went to his closet and pulled out a t- shirt. He looked over to Evan and got an evil idea, he took off to his bed and jumped, landing right on top of Evan. He had smiled for the first time that morning. "You little fucker!" Evan grinned evilly, the boys got into a wrestling match on the bed, they tossed and turned until the tables were turn completely and Evan ended up on top of Max. The both boys faces close together, breathing hard. Max leaned up and gave Evan a quick peck on the lips. "Breakfast." He said pushing Evan from on top of him. "Why are you so dressed up?" "I was supposed to go to church with my family this morning. But then he-" Max cut him off. "It's okay, I have some clothes you can use, they might be a little small but they should fit." Max pulled a pair of shorts and a t-shirt from his drawer and handed them to Evan who changed quickly. For the first time Evan really noticed his "boyfriend's" room. He saw the charts and pictures on the wall. "So this is why you are so smart when it comes to stars." Evan said pulling up the shorts. "Yep. I've always had a fascination." The boys head down the stairs to the smell of bacon, eggs and pancakes. "Smells good mom." "I made your favorite, chocolate chip pancakes." She said setting a plate of food on the table. After all the food was out they huddled around the small rectangular table Evan and Max sitting across from each other and Max's mother sitting at the head. They began to dig in. Evan was a little confused after no one said grace but welcomed the change of pace. "I like your house, Mrs. Chase." Evan said after swallowing a gulp of orange juice. "Please dear call me Linda." She said smiling, "and thank you for the compliment but the credit goes to Maxie" Max partial choked on his pancake. "Mom!" He said. "You've never had a problem with that nickname." She said to Max sweetly. "When Maxie was younger, I would call him by that name and he would smile like there was no tomorrow. He was the most adorable little 4 year old you've ever seen. So Max, you haven't properly introduced us." She said bouncing between Max and Evan. "Oh. Mom this is Evan, a uh, uh friend from school and Evan this is of course, my lovely mother." "So what are you boys plan for today?" Linda asked taking a bite out of a pancake. Max was about to speak when he was cut off. "Well since Max is still pretty new, I figured I'd take him out to local mall, you know stuff like that. I mean, if you're okay with that." Evan said. "Oh no my dear, I am perfectly okay with that. Maxie can take care of himself, he's proved that about himself." They finished eating with some light chatter mostly about Max who sat and blushed a majority of the conversation. The boys helped bring things into the kitchen and then excused themselves to get ready for their day out. "You didn't mention us to your mom." Evan asked almost sadly. "We aren't official yet, but when we are I promise I won't hide a thing from world about us." Max said pulling a light pink polo over his t-shirt and a dragging on a pair of acid wash jeans and topping it off with a pair of converses. After a spritz or two of cologne he flashed his beautiful smile that just melts me. How can I stay mad at him?" He walked past me and his scent was overwhelming, I grabbed his arm and pulled him on top of me. "Woah! There, tiger." He said separating himself. "What's wrong?" I asked propping myself on my elbows. "Nothing, but if we keep kissing, I don't want to do anything neither of us are ready for. I don't want things to be complicated. He said thoughtfully. "This is why you're perfect. Christy always tried to get in my pants and I've damn near had to push her off of me sometimes." Max smiled. "You should get changed." He giggled. I picked up my Sunday bests and walked out of the room, Max shut the door and followed close behind me. We said goodbye to his mother and headed to my house so I could change. When we arrived my father's Escalade wasn't in the driveway so I assumed they weren't home yet. No way did I want to face my family. We got into the house and ran up the stairs to my bedroom. "Oh wow! Did you draw these?" Max said pointing to all the drawings on my wall, some were pencil; some were Sharpie, and others were a mixture of the two. He walked around the room and sampled every bit of artwork. "You're really good you know that?" My heart broke a little bit, but not in a bad way. I felt emotions welling inside me. I let out a soft chuckle and exhaled deeply trying to force a few tears back to where they came. "Tell that to my father. He thinks art is a waste of time." I stood at my dresser facing the wall. A few moments later I felt a warm body against my back and arms wrap around my torso. "Your father doesn't know what he's talking about. You're an amazing artist." Max said letting go and walking to the opposite side of the room. "What's this?" He asked picking up the leather bound drawing book that I usually kept secret." I briefly looked at what he was holding. "It's nothing just an old sketch book." I pulled what I needed out the drawer and walked back to him and sat next to him on the bed. He began to thumb through the drawings until we heard the front door close. "Shit they're home early!" I finished getting dressed quickly and soon enough I heard my father's voice. "Evan Daniel Lonzo!" He used my entire name that is never a good sign. "Let's go." I said bravely. We walked down the stairs and ran into my siblings. "Connor, Jess, this is Max. Max this is Connor and Jess. My little brother and sister." Max gave them a quick wave. We continued to walk to front of the house making our way to the door. "Evan. Kitchen please?" My mother called. "Great." I muttered under my breath. "Hi Mom," I said softly, I had no reason to be upset with her. "Mom this is Max a friend from school. Max my mom." Max stuck out his hand. "Nice to meet you Mrs. Lonzo." She wiped off her hands on a kitchen towel and shook his hand firmly. She then turned her focus on me. "You should go talk to your father." She said, trying her best to be a neutral third party but her will was quickly failing. "I don't want to deal with him, especially when I have a guest." I said as coldly as I could muster. I kissed her lightly on the cheek and walked out of the house with Max right behind me. We got in the car and drove to the major mall that was about 20 minutes away. "I'm sorry you had to see that." I said apologetically to Max "It happens. So don't worry about it." He said pecking me lightly on the cheek. We got out the car and went inside; the mall was vast and if you had a very vivid imagination you'd say that it resembled the Emerald City from the Wizard of Oz or Wicked. We mulled around and went into some clothing stored tried on a few items and talked about the cute boys, but always reassuring that either one of us were way cuter. The hours ticked by and we came to the conclusion that we were both hungry, Max began to walk in the direction of the food court when I gripped his hand. "Huh? I thought we were hungry?" He said confused. "We are. I just thought that we should have something a little better." We walked clear across the mall. "Close your eyes." I said putting one hand over his eyes and taking his left hand in my right. We rounded the corner and stopped walking. I moved my hand slowly and told him to open his eyes. "California Pizza! This place is a little pricy don't you think?" "Nah, I love this place." I said walking up to the hostess. "Hi I have a reservation for Lonzo." "Lonzo, Lonzo." She said looking down a long list of names. Perfect your table just opened up. Follow me please." We followed her to the back the amazing aroma of different pizzas and pastas was delicious and overwhelming. The table I requested was a special table. "Here we are sir. Your waiter will be by shortly to take your order." She put down some menus and walked away. "This is beautiful. Thank you." Max said. "You haven't seen the half of it." I said opening the blinds, there behind the seamless window was the most beautiful sunset the sky was full of purples and oranges and the red-orange sun was slowly setting in the distance. Max began to sniffle a little bit. "What's wrong babe?" "I've never had anything like this. It's been a really long time and I thought I'd never find this feeling again." He didn't have to say anything. I knew what he was talking about. I reached out and took his hand in mines stroking it gently. "You put this whole thing into perspective for me. With Christy I felt obligated to take her out and buy things for her, but with you I want to do these things for you. I want to treat you like a king. So I want to ask you officially to be my boyfriend." A little tear flowed down both mine and Max's face. He smiled a big smile and put his hand free hand on top of mine. "Yes, I will be your boyfriend." He leaned over the table halfway and I met him the other half and we kissed and that moment was just as beautiful as the first time we kissed.
