Chapter 5 – The Crush – Break The Spell Late in the Sunday afternoon the Bells house received a phone call from young Sam Little. Sam rarely called, and if he did it was important. Mr. Bells answered the phone, "Hello." Sam quickly responded. "Hello Mr. Bells, I need to talk to Gage!" "One moment Sammy." The nickname has always irritated Sam. He lets some people call him it though. After what seamed like forever for Sam, but was 20 seconds, Gage answered the phone, "What's up Sammy?" Sam huffed quickly, "Not right now this is serious!" "Oh fine, what is it?" "I think your babysitter, Colby, is on his way to the hospital." The concern in Gage's voice was undeniable. "How do you know?" "Dad and I were driving home and there was a big kid beating up a smaller kid. When dad got out to help he grabbed the kid's wallet after calling the ambulance. His ID said Colby Brown apparently." Sam could barely breath after he was done. Gage was silent. "We're almost at the hospital. Want me to call you back if we get confirmation?" "No, stay on the phone..." Gage's heart was beating at a mile per second. Sam knew what his best friend was going through. He may not have experienced it himself but he knew Gage was worried. After a few minutes Gage asked, "Anything yet?" "Dad's trying to get the name. Just be patient okay?" Moments later Sam watched two adults run into emergency. Heard them talk to the nurses and heard the name Colby Brown as who they were looking for. "I got it! It is Colby!" Gage's heart dropped. He swallowed the last of his courage to hold back his tears, "I'll be down there even if I have to run." He hung up the phone and ran down stairs. His dad was in his study, Gage threw the door open. "DAD!!" His father turned around, his anger disappeared when he saw his son's face. "Gage this better be important. I am busy working right now." Gage could barely hold back his tears, "Colby is in the hospital!" Hector Bells looked at his son, "How do you know this?" "Sam and his dad were driving home and they saw him getting beaten up!" "Let me call Jim and see." Gage stood very patiently while his father talked on the phone. From what Gage could hear, it was Colby in the hospital. When his father got off the phone he looked at his son, "I have this feeling you want to go down don't you?" Gage nodded furiously, "I have to know if he's okay!" "Okay, your lucky Nick is at Tanis'. Lets go." Gage bolted to grab his coat and shoes. The father and son made their way down to the hospital. They entered through the emergency doors. Hector asked a nurse, "Where are Justin and Scarlet Brown?" "They are just down the hall in the waiting area. May I ask who you are?" The kind nurse replied. "I'm Gage and this is my dad. Colby is my babysitter." Gage grabbed his father's hand and tugged him towards the waiting area. When they got there Gage spotted Sam sitting beside his dad. Beside him was a middle aged couple who Gage assumed was Colby's mom and dad. "Gage!" Sam got up and ran over. "You got here fast." "I had to know if Colby was alright or not." The middle aged man stood up, "Are you Gage Bells?" Gage nodded, "Well Colby has said a lot about you." "How is he?" Gage's concern was of a similar level as Colby's father, Justin Brown. Every parent in the room could see Gage saw the older boy as a role model who he truly loved. "He's in surgery right now, but he'll be fine." Gage smiled, "From what I've heard as his father he's suffered some broken and cracked ribs. He has bruising all over his body and a couple of chipped teeth. Nothing life threatening though." Gage sat down between Sam and Colby's mother. His dad crouched down in front of him, "I have to go home to get back to work and for when Clair and Nick get home. Jim is gonna give you a ride home when HE thinks you need one okay?" Gage nodded. "Okay, I'll see you later." Scarlet and the young boys got talking about life. From Gage talking about how awesome Colby is to how school is going. The conversation went on for a few hours before a nurse came into the room, "Colby Brown has been moved into a special care room. He appears to be in stable condition and he is allowed two visitors." Scarlet, Justin and Gage all get up. Sam fallows Gage closely leaving Jim in the rear. When they got to his room Gage leaned against the wall and waited for Colby's parents to let him in. He knew he should not be one of the first to go in. Colby laid there, knocked out from the surgery, with a calm face. His left eye had swollen right up, his right was surrounded by a black eye. His right wrist wrapped in bandages. His hospital gown had bandages covering his ribs showing. Scarlet's tears were visible from the moment they entered the room. Justin, being a 'man', held them back as much as he could. The couple could only speak to their uncontentious son, with out any words back they felt defeated. Justin walked out of the room first, "I'm going to get my wife and I some food. Gage if you would like..." He was interrupted by someone running down the hall in high heels. "I'm so sorry I didn't answer earlier! I was in the middle of a volley ball tournament and didn't see my phone!" "Jessica, everything is fine. Colby has some things he'll have to let heal but it'll be fine in due time." Gage looked between the girl and her father confused, "Oh, this is Gage, one of the boys Colby, babysits and Sam, his best friend." Gage and Sam shyly waved towards the older girl. "I'm Jessica, Colby's older sister. Were you just about to go in?" Gage nodded, "Your his sister though, you should go in first." he returned to his place on the wall. "You can call me Jess. Also, I was a bad sister today, you go in first." Gage looked up at her father who motioned to let him into the room. Gage accepted with a huge smile on his face. "That was nice of you. I'm going to grab your mother and I dinner, want anything?" Justin waited for his daughter's response. "Surprise me! Don't forget some food for Colby. Cold anything is better than hospital food." The father went on his way. Over the next hour Gage would switch out with Jessica. The young woman was could eve strike up a conversation with the shy Sam. It was mostly Sam giving one word answers but to his father it was as far as anyone had gotten his son to come out if his shell. When Colby awoke it was shortly after 6pm. He woke up to a painful chest asking, "Where am I?" He was immediately hugged by his mother. "Oh Colby! You're alright!" "My chest... can't breath." His mother let go. He looked around the room and saw Gage sitting in a chair patiently waiting. "What are you doing here, Gage?" "Sammy called me saying that you were hurt. I had to come and see if you were okay or not." Gage went crimson and put on a shy smile. His smile was met by Colby grinning as well. Before he could say anything a nurse came into the room. She checked over everything before speaking, "You have suffered some broken and cracked ribs. I'm sure you've noticed your eye, and your wrist was damaged. For now the doctor says you can be moved into a different room. One where your allowed more visitors." Colby's face went as surprised as he could make it. "I have more visitors?" His mother responded, "Your father and sister are out their so that this young man could be in here. Along with them are Sam and his father, the man who found you." Colby was moved to a more spacious room where everyone could come in. For a few hours they visited him in his new room. When 8pm hit though they were asked to leave, as visiting hours were over. Gage have him a soft hug and left saying, "I'll try and come down to see you tomorrow." Colby smiled and waved the best he could at everyone leaving. He fell asleep shortly after. The next day went by slowly for Colby. He had his cell out texting Trevor, Mitch and Vicky most of the day. But with doctor visits, meals and such, his day went by very slowly. Shortly after 3pm Trevor came in knocking. "I was wondering why you chickened out of telling your parents." "Haha very funny." "You look like hell." "Tell me about it, I feel like hell." Trevor handed over a pile of work, "Homework for the week?" "Yep, sadly." Colby sighed, "It could be worse I guess..." Scarlet and Justin came into the room with a plastic bag, "Oh, hello Trevor how are you today?" "I'm fine Mrs. Brown, just dropping off Colby's homework for this week." "Thank you. You are welcome to stay longer. I brought Colby his gameboy and some batteries for some more entertainment." Colby smiled, "Thanks mom... I want to tell you and dad something..." Trevor looked at his beaten friend. The two friends exchanged a silent conversation, not even Scarlet knew what was being said. "What is it honey." "You have to promise not to be mad." His father spoke up, "Colby, unless you say this was a suicide attempt we could never be mad." "Not even then, Justin, not even then." His mother spoke with such force you could almost see the words coming out of her mouth. Colby looked over at his friend and then his parents. Under his breath Colby spoke, "I'm gay..." His father heard it loud and clear and smiled. His mother didn't quite hear it, "I'm sorry hunny I didn't hear you. You need to speak up." "I said I'm gay mom." A smile came across her face as well. "What's so funny?" "When you were four, you told us a boy was pretty." Scarlet explained while Trevor snorted, "We asked you all kinds of questions but one thing was certain:" "You had a crush on this young boy and you were happy." Colby's face went crimson and Trevor began to laugh hysterically. "You basically told us you were gay at a young age. We've been fine with it since then and we aren't changing anytime soon." "Does Jess know?" His mother nodded, "Great now I'm gonna have her bugging me!" The family plus Trevor laughed and talked for a few more hours. Around 5pm his parents went home for dinner but promised to be back with food. Shortly after they left Mitch and Vicky showed up. Colby was very cheerful the entire time. Like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders Colby was carefree. He even made a few movements that hurt his ribs. Nothing to bad though. Just after his parents had come and gone to deliver food Trevor and Vicky had to go. Colby gave an odd look at Trevor who smiled and left. He knew it had been set up the moment Mitch said, "Vicky, your my ride!" "Sorry Mitch, my sister is having a friend over. I have to go pick her up first or my parents will freak!" She rushed out of the room before anything else could be said. A few minutes past without a word from either boy. Colby finally spoke up, "Well this is kinda awkward..." "No kidding. From the moment you first met me it seemed like you hated me." "I didn't hate you." Colby blushed, "I had other reasons to not want you hanging with us." Mitch gave off a skeptical look, "Seriously? And since then?" "You've grown on me." Mitch rolled his eyes. "To tell you the truth though, I knew of you before Trevor brought you into the group." "Oh really? A creeper are we?" Mitch nudged Colby's shoulder. "Well it's kinda hard not to know you after dumped your lunch all over the cafeteria floor on your first day here." "Hey being a new kid sucks! I was nervous as all hell and barely had enough money to get my lunch that day. It's expensive!" Colby giggled, "Ya, then we all pitched in for your second lunch. Then you were officially part of us." "Ya, then that day at Trevor's house... what was up with that?" "Oh that... well.." Mitch looked at Colby. Going through his options Colby decided to tell Mitch exactly what happened. "Trevor was trying to get me to know you better." "Why?" Colby drew in a breath, "I have a major crush on you..." "You mean had right?" Colby shook his head. "Oh, so your gay or are you bi? I'm sorry if I assumed to much." Colby's eyes went wide. He looked towards Mitch who would refuse to make eye contact, "No I'm gay... and no I meant to say have." For the first time since the lunch incident Mitch blushed. It didn't last long as Mitch got up he quickly made his leave, "Sorry I remembered I have to meet my mom at the store. I'll see you tomorrow." Mitch left and Colby went immediately to his phone to text Trevor of the events that had just past. In Colby's mind it was one of two things going on. Either Mitch was into him, or Mitch found the situation really awkward because he was straight. He's coming back tomorrow, Colby thought to himself, I'll ask him then. Chapter end.
