I prayed that he didn't have some horrible, ugly wound or something. Then I got a good look at him. It was Kirk! ______ As happy as I was that Kirk was back, my heart sank. I looked at him, stunned, and took a deep breath. He looked badly hurt. Only then did I notice Shawn--he was already at his brother's side, following the gurney into the room and crying loudly. I felt bad for both of them. "Hey, it's okay," Kirk said to his brother. "Kirk, what happened?" I said. Then I was sorry I said anything. It was THE stupid question of the moment. I figured since his parents were here, I should let them talk. Kirk's father spoke up. "We were with Kirk in the emergency room, and stayed with him as they wheeled him up here," he said to me and Shawn. "Thank you," I said softly, grateful for the explanation. I was shaking with fear. The orderlies and the nurse got Kirk settled in bed, and left. "Hey buddy. Looks like we're roommates," Kirk said to me. He had patches and bandages all over. His arm was in a cast. "Are you okay?" It hit me that he may have told his parents a cover story, so I didn't dare ask him how he got his injuries. I was glad I'd shut up, before. "Yeah, I'll be fine." "Kirk! Are you sure?" Shawn asked through his tears. "Yeah. Don't worry, Shawn." My parents and Kirk's parents had talked the whole while. I'd heard a buzz of adult voices while Kirk and I talked. "So what's wrong with you?" Shawn asked his brother. I gave Shawn a look that I hoped would let him know not to ask Kirk how this happened. It was a long shot. "Slight concussion, a few cuts and bruises, and--well, you can see my arm's broken. Nothing serious." "Serious enough!" Kirk's mom said, apparently not missing a word. "Yes, how are you feeling, now son?" Kirk's dad said. "Stuff hurts, but I'm okay." "Do you need a pain shot?" "No," Kirk said, blushing. I knew what that blush was. "Car accidents are always serious," my dad chimed in. "Yeah," Kirk said, "I was told--all the paperwork and the insurance. Plus, my driving record." "Yes," Kirk's father said, "he's had a perfect record up to now." Then our four parents talked among each other again. "Hey, Matt! What's up with YOU? You look like you're wired up to a lot of hardware," Kirk said, making me and Shawn laugh. "Well, I just had surgery this morning. They got me on a monitor, so if I start to have a problem they'll know about it right away." "Yeah," Shawn said, "if he farts, they know it." Then Shawn had one of his giggling fits. Kirk rolled his eyes. The three of us laughed. I guess the sound of us laughing brought the adults around to paying attention to Kirk again. I was sort of old hat by this time--seems like I'd been in the hospital forever. "Your dad and I are going to talk to the nurse," Kirk's mom said, and she kissed him. Then his dad kissed him. Shit, all these kisses--I felt I should kiss him, myself! Not that I thought I ever would. I guess it was the heat of the moment. Then Kirk's parents did the same kiss exchange with Shawn. Now HIM, I really wanted to kiss. After Kirk's parents left, my mom spoke up. "I'm glad you're feeling better, Kirk," my mom said, "and you're very lucky, that your car didn't have more damage." She had an odd look when she said that. I guessed that with the parental exchange, my mom knew how much damage there was to Kirk's car. "So, you're feeling okay?" my dad asked Kirk. "Yes, not bad." "Good. How are things with you and your brother?" "Doing fine," Kirk said, blushing again, "we need to catch up on what's happening with him and Matt." "And how ARE things going with you and Shawn?" dad asked, turning to me. "Well, I think we're doing great. I heard about those seminars. Kirk told me." I was embarrassed and didn't know what to say. "Good. We'll talk more about that in private, Matt," dad said. That gave me a scare. I guess my worry showed through, because dad looked at me and said more. "Son, the main thing is that you both respect each others' thoughts, needs, and feelings." "Yeah," I said, gulping. "Thanks dad." Oh, yeah, I knew about those needs. Matt Junior was trying to let me know he was starting to feel a need. "You look like you're recovering well, son. How do you feel?" "Um, fine. Just my jaw hurts." Actually, I was still groggy. "Yes, well, do they give you pain medication?" Oh, boy, do they! "Um, yeah. No problems there, dad." Thoughts of Steve Thurbin came to mind. "Do you need anything?" "No, I don't think so. Oh, maybe some more underwear." "All right, son." "I'll bring you some tomorrow," mom said. I was glad she didn't ask what kind, or get into any detail, because I had some kiddie-style underwear that still fit, that I liked to wear around the house. But most other normal, healthy 17-year-old guys wouldn't wear if their life depended on it. That made me think of Shawn, and that he was 14, and maybe someday I would show him that underwear, and make him wear it, and we could have some fun with that. Dad said they were leaving the room. "Your mom and I are going to check on Kirk's parents." "Okay," I said. As soon as they left, I knew this was my big chance. "God, Kirk! What happened? You were really running away?" I asked, with Shawn next to me, wide-eyed. "At first. Later, I was just driving around, trying to figure out what to do. I saw these two guys fighting on the street. Watching them, I got distracted and hit a phone pole, and got hurt when I got bounced around in the car. That's the part I told mom and dad." "Oh," Shawn said, looking at me. "So--what happened really?" "I went to Hyde's Cliff, and I walked around for a while, not too close to the edge, but when I hit a low spot that I didn't see, I fell and went over the embankment." "Oh, God!" "Holy shit!" "I was lucky. It wasn't real steep right there. I kept rolling, and hit rocks and bushes. That's how I got cut and bruised." "What about your arm?" Shawn said, beating me to the question. "Broke it when I rolled over a big rock. I was going pretty fast then." Shawn seemed relieved at this, and that puzzled me. Maybe he thought Kirk was in a fight, and didn't want anyone to know. Kirk did have a black eye. "Did that hurt bad?" "Yeah, it hurt like hell." "How did you stop?" I asked, knowing that you can pick up speed real fast in a case like that. "Lucky again. A clump of huge bushes gave me a soft landing." "Damn!" "It didn't hurt bad enough to stop me from driving home." "Thank God you did," I said. Shawn was crying softly. "Hey, you!" Kirk said, verbally nudging his brother. "I'm not dyin' ya know!" "Yeah," Shawn said, "I know. I'm just glad you're back." Then Kirk and Shawn hugged, as best they could with Kirk's injuries. And for the first time, I saw them kiss. It was a brotherly, regular, plain kiss, but it was the first time I'd ever seen brothers kiss. Matt Junior definitely thought this rated a response. I agreed, using my hand to hide him from the others. I couldn't believe it. Then again, with all the kissing his parents did, I guess it was routine. It was touching, seeing them like that, knowing how Shawn suffered with his brother missing. I almost made a wisecrack about the kiss, then I thought that would sound like a put down. "Hey," I said, "did you guys see the newspaper today?" "No," they said, to my relief. I was really happy that Shawn hadn't seen it. "Well, look at this." I handed the paper to Shawn, who then walked it over to Kirk's bed. "Jesus!" Kirk howled. Then he read further. Shawn looked like he was reading along. Then I saw them brighten up when they saw the name of the guy who had the accident. "Yeah!" I said. "I about had a heart attack over that." I left out the part where the nurses came rushing in. "I can see why," Kirk said. Shawn was teary-eyed again. That was curious, since Kirk was obviously okay, but then again, they were brothers, and Shawn maybe thought Kirk had died or something. "Do you know him?" I asked Kirk. "No, but I think maybe Steve Wallingford went with her." "Poor guy." 'Oh, shit, Steve's a sweetheart,' I thought. "Hey, guys, we're going to take off now," Kirk's mom said, as all four of our parents came back into the room. "I see you saw the story," my dad said, eyeing the newspaper. "Yeah. I just showed it to Kirk and Shawn." "What a tragedy," my mom said. "Well, we're just glad it wasn't you, Kirk," his mom said, kissing him good-bye, then his dad did the same. I think all of us said 'yes' in agreement. My mom came over and kissed me, and asked softly if I was really all right. I reassured her. After that, it got a little confusing, but I think we all said good-bye. Shawn started having a panic attack. "Dad, can I stay a while, please?" Shawn said. "No son. Your brother's been through a lot, and Matt just had surgery. I think they need their rest more than usual tonight." The disappointment on Shawn's face was very clear. My dad started to say something, then didn't. I guess he thought it was best not to override Shawn's dad. I would have bet he wanted Shawn to stay, and was ready to volunteer to pay for his cabfare. Kirk and I glanced at each other as everyone left. It hadn't occurred to me that I wouldn't have my Shawn with me for the evening hours, and the whole exit was a kind of shock. We listened as their voices and footsteps died away. Each weaker sound another separation between me and my lover. "Bummed out, huh?" Kirk said sympathetically. "Yeah." "You wanted him here, didn't you?" "Sure did!" All I could think about was Shawn. I'd seen his sad, sad face when his dad told him he had to go home tonight. I wanted to call Shawn on the phone in a short while, but I knew our love talk would embarrass me--talking to Shawn like that, with his brother in the next bed. I figured it would probably embarrass Kirk, too. I tried to think about Kirk, and all he'd been through, to distract myself. Maybe I could call Shawn later. "You've really been through a lot," I said to Kirk. "Not really." "What's a lot, to you? Eight rounds with The Hulk?" "Funny, Matt. No, it's just--I guess it looks worse than it is." "Any pain, Kirk?" "Not much." "I wish I could say the same. My jaw's killing me right now. I think I'm due for a pain shot." "Do you call the nurse for those?" "No, they usually just come around. But I will call if they wait much longer." "Sorry to hear that. And, um, I'm really feeling like a shit that I did that to you, man." Kirk started looking sad, and I couldn't handle that. "Hey, you. Okay, you punched me but I'm over it. You're still my best friend." "You're really something, Matt." I don't know why, but it suddenly occurred to me that I didn't know Shawn's birthday. "When's Shawn's birthday?" "Birthday, um--January twenty-fourth I think." Mine was less than a month later, not counting the years. "Thanks." Shit, not that I would remember it. And I was in no shape to hunt for a pencil. "How do you really feel about me and Shawn being together?" Kirk blushed. "I accept it. You guys are cool together. And . . . I guess I can see two guys in love, almost as easy as a guy and a girl, maybe equal. But I thought about your future." "Future?" "Yeah. Like, okay, things are cool, now, with you and my brother, but what happens when he's 18 and you're 21?" "What do you mean?" "Think, Matt. I know you're going to college in town, but by then, you'll be out of college, Shawn will be a freshman. Maybe you'll be separated if Shawn goes far away." Kirk really had me thinking some hard things. "Yeah, I see what you mean." "Yeah. And that's just the beginning. Suppose some girl hooks you? Then what do you say to Shawn?" "No, that's not gonna happen." "Okay, even if that doesn't happen, when Shawn gets out of college, he'll be 21, and you'll be 24. Do you think it could last between you and Shawn? He's got a lot more growing up to do than you, right now. Who knows what's even gonna happen in the next year, when he's 15 going on 16, and you're 18." "Kirk, I--" "Okay, sorry. It's just some stuff I was thinking about." "Yeah. It's a lot for me to handle right now." "I'm not trying to be a soil sport," Kirk said with such sincerity. I was quiet then. I guess we both had a lot to think about. I was still arguing with Matt Junior about picking the right time to have fun. But even that didn't spark my interest. After a while, I fidgeted. "So, um--that must have been pretty scary, running away, and getting hurt like that." "That's not the whole story, Matt," Kirk said in a strange tone of voice. It sounded like he had the world's deepest secret. "Huh? There's more?" "Yeah. Not so much more, but different. Shawn begged me not to tell you the truth, so, you never heard what I'm gonna tell you." "Okay." I gulped. Holy shit! Was this surprise day, or what? "Are you sure I can handle it?" I said, joking. "Yeah, I hope you can." "Cool," I said, trying to sound brave. I got nervous when Kirk didn't pick up on my joke. I started to sweat. "I'll tell you what really happened. I did start to run away-- but I didn't go down that embankment." "Holy shit! You mean--" "Shawn beat me up." "WHAT? Shawn did this? He broke your arm, too?" A pain went through me. I knew Kirk wasn't that athletic except for tennis, and that Shawn did football and Karate, but this was ridiculous. I was stunned. "No, I did that falling over that wooden footstool thing by my desk." My brain short-circuited. I just stared at Kirk. Shawn, my lover, my sweet boy--hurt his brother. My mind went down into a hole. I thought about Kirk, and that he had hurt me, but that just made me confused. Kirk went on. "I faked the car accident by running the car into that pole at the end of Hyde's cliff--just enough to make a dent. Shawn had me concoct the other story for your sake--so you'd never know he hurt me. I hated to lie to you, but I had no choice." I snapped out of it. There were a million questions, but I had one thing on my mind. "So where does this leave me and Shawn?" "Don't break up over this, Matt. It'll break his heart. He loves you. You, um--you do still love him, don't you?" "Look, don't beat around the bush with me. Yes I love him, but I don't know what's going on. If you want me to break up with him, just tell me! I can't fight you, Kirk! You can make us or break us! Blood is thicker than water. But--I gotta know I have the TRUTH, here. My head's going crazy with all these changing stories!" "Are you saying I'm having sex with him?" Kirk said. "I'm saying I don't know what to believe." "I love you, Matt." "I know, I know," I said, feeling totally stressed. erotic_dreams_story@hotmail.com (That's me, Eric) :-) Thanks for reading. CRAZY-FOR-THE-BOY Chapter 10 More to come?
