Chapter 32: L is for the Liars

"Are you ready?"Eric asked.

I nodded in agreement as the butterflies in my stomach flew everywhere, "Can I really do this? I mean..." I stopped and looked at him.

"Yeah, lil bro." Eric smiled, "It's time for you to do your thang."

I nodded and walked from behind the curtain. My sight was blinded by the spotlight and I stood behind the microphone and in front of the live band. The tune for My Heart by Paramore started and I took a deep breath.

"I am finding out, that maybe I was wrong." I sang, my fear fading into the background, "That I've fallen down and I can't do this alone. Staaaaay with me, this is what I need, please?"

"You performed at your brother's club!" Hannah giggled, "And it was great!"

"Great?" I asked as we walked down the street and away from the Starbucks. I had finished the song and been a hit, or at least got an applause. I sang it very calmly and with a very clear understanding that I was no Paramore. They rocked, I was just a guy who liked the song and tried to put it on my octave. But I had done it. And now I'm walking and talking to my best friend, who had become my best friend all over again, "I knew splediforous, but great..."

"And Davis was there." Hannah smiled.

"Was Harry?" I asked.

""God, you're mean." Hannah said, sipping her decaf.

"Sorry, sore subject." I said, "He's just been distant, as in no calls. Minimal texts."

"Minimal?" Hannah asked.

"One or two. There should be dozens! My inbox should be crying." I sighed.

"Have you been crying?" Hannah asked.

I looked at her, "Huh?" I asked.

"Just...on stage, your singing was all emotional." Hannah said, "I just...was that part of the healing process?"

"Healing? You're talking like we've broken up." I said.

"Haven't you?" Hannah asked.

"Han, you're severely pissing me off." I sighed.

"How did the dinner actually go?" Hannah asked.

"Good. There was this funny thing with a casserole." I chuckled, "So, how's it going with your secret pregnancy."

"I'm keeping it." Hannah said, "I have to. I still have no idea whose it is."

"Poor, slutty friend."I smiled.

Hannah chuckled, "Not funny." She said quickly.

As we walked, we stopped at the sight of Christina and Kendall stepping out of the video store in front of us. It startled me. I wasn't prepared to deal with this, not now. Christina had come a long way from her trashy look and now she was back to vintage Christina, gorgeous, bitchy, popular Christina. Kendall looked as glamorous as ever. It was crazy to see them here, of all places. There was something to be said, something Kendall and I needed to say to each other.

"Hi." Christina and Kendall said.

"Hi." Hannah and I said nervously.

There was an awkward silence.

"So, why are you two b..." I started

"broads...out."Hannah finished, but that wasn't what I was going to say.

"Adaen."Kendall said.

"Don't start." I said.

"Gosh, do you have to be such a dick?" Christina asked.

"I'll answer that if you keep them out of yours." I snapped.

"That was uncalled for." Hannah said.

"Adaen, I know you're mad, but..."Kendall said softly.

"There is no but, we have nothing to say unless you're ready to go to the cops and confess." I said, getting no reply, "That's what I thought."

"It's not that simple." Christina said, "We had drugs, me, my brother, Julie and Hannah! And Brady said he's going to..."

"I know the story, but if I remember, your own brother talked you out of it too." I frowned, "I cannot believe you'd let people remember her like this! But of course it's all about you." I turned to Hannah, "I'll see you later." I said, walking away.

Kendall walked behind me. Christina and Hannah stared at each other, wondering what to say. They had become friends, but they had been distant since Adaen's arrival.

"So, I see you're Adaen's lackey now." Christina said snidely.

"Well, you were a hot, steaming mess; I had to get a new friend.

"Nice to see what you think of me." Christina said quickly.

"Sorry, I just..." Hannah started.

"It's cool." Christina said, "Kendall, haul ass."

Kendall looked over to her, "Just a minute." She said.

"She's waiting." I said.

"Adaen.Come on, we're best friends, or at least we were in New York." Kendall sighed, "I just want us to be friends again."

"Then do the best thing." I said.

"I am." Kendall said, "Christina is so shaken and we just need time for a plan."

I shook my head, "The plan is simple, tell the truth. It's the only plan that works." I said.

"What about all the threats Brad made?" Kendall asked.

"Bluffs, he can't do anything when he's in jail." I argued, "You guys are acting like kids."

"So now you're Mr. Morality? You're the moral compass?" Kendall asked, "You've been hiding secrets for years, so what makes you able to pass judgment?"

I was taken back, "Nice. It was hurtful and spiteful and...just when I thought you couldn't go any lower." I said slowly.

"What?" Kendall asked.

I looked at her for a minute, "I never thought I was better than you or Christina, never, not until now. You're covering the truth with lies and she was only my friend for few semesters." I frowned.

"This is like talking to a heightened wall." Kendall spat.

"Ditto."I said, "Hannah, I'll see you later."

"Okay." She called out, walking the other way.

I walked away, heading home.

Davis sat in Adaen's living room, waiting for Adaen to get home. When he left, Ryan was getting in the shower. Davis had been over it in his mind a thousand times. After Adaen had griped at him, Davis and Ryan had downed a mass of alcohol and then everything was blank. He hadn't even seen his parents since the dinner. He had no knowledge of how that had gone. He did hear his mother and father come in, chuckled and laughing about some casserole. He felt bad, real bad. His parents had made the arrangements and he had done nothing to help Adaen with the planning, then to just bring Ryan in at the last minute...and then, this.

"Hey." Eric said, sitting on the coffee table across from Davis, "He's been gone for a while, should be no time before he gets here."

"Thanks." Davis said, looking over at him.

"No problem." Eric said.

"I mean for not making it hard-er for me and your brother." Davis said.

"You make him happy." Eric said, "He doesn't get that a lot these days."

Davis looked at him and sighed, "I know." He said sadly.

The door opened and I walked into the living room, stopping only when I saw Eric and Davis...conversing. I felt a sharp feeling of anger when I looked at Davis, but then I felt sort of sad to have been without him for so long.

"Hey." Davis said, standing.

Eric stood too, "I got some club-type stuff to do." He said, turning back and looking at Davis, "Tell your parents I said casserole. They'll know what it means." He chuckled, leaving.

Davis looked at him uncertainly, then nodded, "Hey." He said.

I wanted to hug him and tell him that I love him but I didn't, "So now you show up?" I asked, "You're late."

"Umm, you should sit down. I have something to tell you." He said solemnly.

"Why?" I asked nervously.

"I did something..." Davis said.

"Yeah, you didn't show up to a dinner that I slav..."

"Ryan and I slept together." Davis said, shattering my world with just a few words.

In an instant, my sorrow turned to anger, "You did what?!" I asked, slapping him. I had tried to make a fist, but I couldn't muster the strength.

"You slapped me?" Davis asked, holding his cheek and looking at me with a confused face.

"Only because my fist wimped out." I said quickly, "You...and Ryan?"

"I'm so sorry, I was drunk." Davis said, hoping that it would excuse him. It didn't.

"Oh, well then, it's alright." I spat, "This was payback. Because...because I yelled at you and Marco and this is payback..."

"No," Davis said, moving towards me, "No, this was an accident. I would never..."

"But you did." I said quickly.

"I didn't mean to." Davis added.

"But," I said slowly, "You did."

"I love you." Davis said.

"I charmed your mother, survived the casserole thing, and put up with your laid-back-ness and un...caring." I said, looking at him slowly, "You didn't care."

"Look, I just...I love you. Not the dinner! It wasn't important to me, you are." Davis said.

Mom and Dad peeked around the corner, "Are you two okay?" Dad asked.

"No!" "Yes!"

We said at the same time.

There was a scream and we all turned to the dining room to see Kya waddling out to into the open, dripping.

"We've got to get her somewhere." Davi said.

"You've done enough, leave." I said, running to my sister.

Davis left.

"Hospital now!"Kya demanded.

Eric helped her to the car and we all ran to Dad's car to follow.

§

Davis made it home just in time to see Ryan coming out of his house, bags in hand.

"Where are you going?" Davis asked.

"I've caused too much trouble." Ryan said, "We didn't sleep together. We must have just passed out."

Davis sighed with relief, "Thank God." He said, noticing Ryan's face, "It's not...I love Adaen. You're hot and everything, but nothing's coming from it."

"I'm only in town for a few more days, so we can shoot some hoops or something later." Ryan said.

"You can stay here." Davis said, "But we need to get to the hospital, now."

Ryan nodded and they headed to Davis' truck. At the hospital, my family was celebrating the arrival of Charli Shyeira Myers. She had taken Jonathan's, my sister's boyfriend, last name. It was a happy moment. Even happier when Marco's family had come. I was bathed in happy until I saw Davis come around with Ryan. I slipped out of the waiting room and headed towards them. I was going kick Ryan's ass, even though he was bigger than me, but Davis caught me and held me back. Hannah and Marco watched from the door.

I pushed Davis, "You have a lot of nerve coming here with him!" I said loudly.

"We didn't sleep together." Davis said, "We just passed out."

"Oh yeah."I said with an angry chuckle.

"I'm serious; I just thought I did because we woke up next to each other." Davis said honestly.

"I'm sorry for all the drama. I..." Ryan started.

"Should shut up."I growled.

"Adaen."Davis said.

"Sorry. I'm just..not sure I believe you." I frowned.

"Want to check my anus?" Ryan asked, getting odd looks from both of us, "Sorry, but it's the truth."

"Okay, say I believe you, you still fucked up." I said slowly.

"I know, baby." Davis said, hugging me, "Let me make it up to you?" he whispered.

I smiled and whispered, "I planned for us to make love after the dinner." I said.

Davis smiled at me and hugged me tighter, "It'll happen when it happens." He said, "I love you."

"I love you, too." I said, "You should go see my niece." I said happily, "Just through there." I pointed. Davis left and I looked at Ryan.

"What is it?" Ryan asked.

"I know people like you." I smiled politely, "And all I have to say is that you had better stay away from my boyfriend or..."

"Or you'll slap me?" Ryan chuckled, "Look, I can't help it if I'm hotter than you. Besides, one way or another, I will be with Davis. Deal with it." He said, trying to walk away.

I grabbed his large bicep, "I might be tiny, but you fuck with me or my boyfriend and I'll show you just how friendly I can get." I smirked, "And in no way are you hotter than me." I smiled, walking back to the waiting room and leaving him standing in the middle of the hall.
