I was done changing as well as most of the other kids. I was becoming impatient with waiting and worry. "Why?" you ask? Well, Ty hadn't shown up after excusing himself to use the bathroom before changing. I had made up my mind. I was going to look for him. You know, make sure he was alright. Upon entering the bathroom adjoining the locker room, I could feel something was wrong. For some reason, I felt like I shouldn't have been there. I didn't want to call out too loudly, in case something was amiss. So I began looking underneath the stalls. I saw and heard movement at the stall on the end. "Ty?" I whispered as I neared the door. "GO AWAY!!!" He shouted. I could hear whispering on the other end of the door. "What's going on? Are you alright? Gym is about to..." I was cut off abruptly by the door being flung open and Payton Johnson walking out with a very angry face. I noticed him zipping his fly and tucking in his shirt in one agitated motion. "You breathe a word of this to anyone, Xander, and I will kill you. understand?" he hissed into my face. I looked down at Ty straightening his pants and getting up from the floor. For the first time in my life, I was speechless. Granted, Payton was not a bad looking guy. Quite the contrary. With skin the color of Hershey's, a body hewned from years of quarterbacking for the football team, and (from the looks of things) a very sizable endowment, he was quite the ladies' man. Imagine my surprise to see him and the new guy in a very compromising position. Bumping past me, he headed into the locker room to change for the day. "Xander, I..." Ty started. "You'll be late for class. Get dressed." I know it was very mechanical. I just couldn't do anything else. What do you say to the boy you've been lusting after for the good portion of your day when they have just been caught in an act that you would have hoped to be in. I left and went onto the gym floor. "There's a free period today, slackers!" Coach Fillmore shouted to the class. From the corner of my eye, I saw Ty trotting out of the locker room. I needed to avoid him. What better way than to join a game of basketball? "Xander, wait," Ty tried. "Join the game," I replied neutrally as I grabbed up the ball and headed for the court. Now, anyone from the inner city knows that basketball is more than recreation for us. It is a way of life. A right of passage. Any young man, even if it isn't "your" sport, must know the fundementals or risk being an outcast. I was not a basketball player for our school team, but that was only in name. I could definitely hold my own. My philosophy was that I enjoyed the game, and didn't want to make it a chore. Quickly choosing a team, I started playing. I specifically chose Ty as a team mate to cut down chatter, and to give him the chance that those who hadn't heard about him would be sorry for. I was not dissappointed. I was quick because I was a runner by trade. But he was quick and accurate with his shooting. The fluidity of movement and the concentration on his face were awe inspiring. Shot after shot was sent up, all resulting in a "swish" of net and air. He was also more muscular than I imagined he would be from the uniforms we were subjected to wearing. His arms were like two jackhammers as he pounded away the shots. It was a game to remember. We shut down the other team with a score of 42 to 17 by the end of the period. Heading into the locker room without looking back, I gathered my things and headed out. Getting to the hall bathroom, I quickly changed and tried to catch my breath. What had I seen? How should I handle it from this point on? I couldn't pretend as if I hadn't seen it. And I definitely couldn't pretend as if it didn't hurt more than anything. I had to use my "straight card" for this one. I headed to my last class of the day, knowing that Ty would be waiting. I hadn't even considered the fact that he might not know how to get to the room. My focus was on ignoring him long enough to finish my day. As expected, he was waiting outside of the room with a look of concern etched into his features. When he saw me, the concern did not dissapate. I felt bad, but machismo dictated I keep up pretense. "Can we talk? There's a couple of minutes before the bell rings." I could see the plea in his eyes. I knew he needed resolution, but could I give it to him? "Look," I started tensely. "There's really nothing for me to say at this point. Do what you do. Just don't come at me with that shit." Had that come out of my mouth? I was trying to stay as even toned as possible, but I could feel myself quickly losing composure. "Nah," he interjected, "We gotta talk, man. You've been cool so far. I just want to clear the air about some things." "Look!" I shouted louder than I meant to. "Look... I can't. You don't understand. I don't care what you do. I don't know you. You can do anything you want to." Abruptly, Ty grabbed me and started marching me towards the men's room. "Let me go!" I protested in vain. Once through the door, he shut it and locked it. At that precise moment, the bell rang, signalling the start of last period. "Fuck! I've never been late!" I yelled angrily. "I don't want to talk about this! You're a fucking cocksucker and that's that! End of discussion!" "You don't understand!" He shouted as he slammed me into the wall. "That's why me and my mom's left Brooklyn! I will NOT make her move again!" Tears began to well up in his eyes and it was at that moment that the weight of things in his life seemed to catch up to me. I sighed deeply. "I'm not gonna tell anybody. Just let it go." He visibibly softened, but still looked troubled. "Are we cool? I mean, I ain't askin' you to be best boys or nothing. I just need to know that we're ok. You good?" "I guess. I mean... I don't know what to say to you." The look of hurt on his face burned my heart. But it was quickly replaced by the usual stoic confidence that I had seen all day. "Aight," he replied evenly. "It's whatever, yo. Do what you gotta do. I'm good on my own. Don't even worry about it." I was dumbfounded. I had totally dropped the ball on this one. He needed me, and I knew that. And now I knew why. He felt responsible for the abrupt move in the middle of the school year. I had to fix this. And fast! "Look," I started. I knew that this was a risk and then some, "I have no room to judge you. That's not me and it's not how I operate. I just need time to adjust to what I saw. I mean, try and put yourself in my shoes. That was pretty heavy shit, dude." "I said it's cool," he replied in an even more detached tone. "It obviously isn't," I started. "You're not alone in this." "I only did it to cover my tracks," he quietly started. I opened my mouth to speak, but he put his hand up to stop me. "Payton knows me from Brooklyn. He knows my ex, Rob." The name was definitely familiar. But, there were plenty of Robs in the world. "He plays basketball, football, and runs track for my old school." This got me thinking. track? "Payton caught us kissing after a game your school had at ours and yelled out to the entire football team. My mom was there to pick Rob and me up. She heard everything. That's when we packed up and moved here. She thought that going to a catholic school instead of public would be cool. What are the chances that she would choose the school of the kid who outted me. I couldn't change her mind either. She's convinced that this is best, and I will NOT dissappoint her again. "I saw Payton when we walked into the gym. He followed me into the bathroom." He paused here and looked me in the eye. "If I didn't, he would have told everyone. At least this way, if he does, I have something against him, too. Don't you get it? I'm not some `fucking cocksucker.' It was the only way." "There are worse things than being gay," I stated in a loftier and more judgemental voice than I meant. "You don't know!" He almost screamed. "I know your rep here. You're the good looking preacher's kid who has more money than he knows what to do with and more popularity than he knows about. You've had all the girls you wanted and could have the rest. You're a fucking saint here!" "You don't know shit!" Before I could catch myself, the words were out of my mouth. It was that same sentence that I wish I could have taken back. I broke out in a sweat. My life was over. I could tell from the look passing over his face that the cat was out of the bag. HE KNEW!!! "Are you kidding me?" he asked, shock evident in his voice. "Not you." I couldn't breathe. The air was too palpable. I knew I was close to collapsing, but I couldn't even move enough to faint. I'm finished. As always, send me feedback. I'm trying not to make this the cliche highschool love story. I have some twists and turns in store, but I want to know how you're enjoying so far. And yes... there is some sex to get to. Nothing's happened yet for a reason... IT'S THE FIRST DAY THEY'VE MET!!! But who knows, maybe something will happen next chapter.
