Judgment Error- Chapter 13 by: Chip Dyp (chipdyp@hotmail.com) I rang the doorbell again and looked at my watch. It was twenty to nine and I didn't want to be late for my first day of school. I hammered on the door, hoping that Will would answer. Will yanked open the door with a comb in his hand. "Take it easy man, I was taking a shit." "Let's go! I've still got to figure out where most of my classes are." "Take it easy man. You've got 4 classes and lunch with me, and Rob's in your fifth class. We'll make sure you don't get lost." "So when I have to go to the bathroom, I'll just get the teacher to let you come with me?" "Well, maybe I'll show you where the bathrooms are. Don't want any prospective boyfriends to think that you and I are going out." "Didn't realize you were looking for a boyfriend, Will," I replied with laugh. "Ha, ha, ha. Funny guy. I meant a boyfriend for you." "Oh please don't tell me you are going to be hunting for a boyfriend for me." Will just grinned. "Why not?" "I hate it when people try to set me up with people." "You're just shy." Will pulled on his shoes, and grabbed his backpack. "Let's go." "I'm serious, Will. No setting me up with anyone." I opened the door and walked out to the car. I didn't need Will finding me a boyfriend. I was having enough problems dealing with my own thoughts. I didn't need someone else to worry about. "Fine. I won't set you up with anyone." Will looked at me and smiled. "You've got to lighten up a little, Ian, otherwise you're gonna worry yourself to death." "You're right." I waited until Will walked in front of me and then slapped his ass. "Nice ass, baby." Will turned and grinned. "Thanks. You should see what I've got up front." I giggled and followed Will out to the car. "So, does the cafeteria sell anything good to eat?" "Burgers, fries and gravy, salads, pizza pops, and hot dogs." "Cool." Will and I got into the car, and after I'd backed out of the driveway I asked about Will's last week out at the lake. "I lost my virginity." "What?!?" I asked, turning to look at Will. "I lost my virginity," Will repeated. He looked at me and smiled. "Go on, go on," I urged. "I don't kiss and tell," Will replied with a grin. "I don't need to hear all the gory details. Who was she? How did you meet?" "You're assuming it's a girl?" Will asked slyly. "You lost your virginity to a guy!" "No. It was a woman. Just wanted to see your reaction." I didn't say anything for a few seconds, waiting for Will to continue. "Well?" "Oh, um, she's 25, and a medical student from Halifax." "That's cool. An older woman." "And very experienced," Will added. "The three days we spent together were fantastic." "You lucky dog." "Thanks man." I pulled into the high school parking lot and found a spot. I shut off the car and looked at Will. "So, I guess this is it." "This is it. Don't worry, man. Things are going to be okay." Will and I got out of the car and walked over to the front door. I followed Will to the senior lockers and, after playing with the combination lock for a couple of minutes, dropped off my stuff. I followed Will to our first class of the day, Biology. I hated biology. The first day of school went well. Will managed to get us to our classes on time, and handed me off to Rob for my French class. By the end of the day, I realized that school was going to be all right. The next couple of days were all right. On the fourth day, Mrs. Ridel introduced a new student and assigned him to the only open seat in the class, beside me. His name was David and he was new in town, just like me. He was a little taller than me, and it appeared a little more muscular too. He was dressed in a pair of khaki shorts and a navy blue shirt. His eyes were a brilliant green, and his hair was sandy blond. He was very, very good looking. I spent the rest of the class half listening to Mrs. Ridel and half glancing at David. I wasn't the only one who was looking at David. Several of the girls in the class kept glancing his way. When class ended, David tapped me on the shoulder and asked, "Um, where is room A217?" "Uh, I'm not really sure. I just started school here this year. I know it's on the second level of the academic wing." "Oh, uh, thanks anyway." "Uh, wait." I turned and asked Will where room A217 was. "Out the door, turn left. Go up the stairs then turn right. It's the last room on the right at the end of the hallway." "Thanks," David said. He smiled and walked out of the classroom. I followed with my eyes and when he disappeared out the door, I sighed. "You like him?" Will asked, walking towards the door. "He's very good looking, and he seems like a really smart guy," I replied, following him to our next class. "Yeah, Mrs. Ridel seemed impressed with his answer about what that poem meant. But do you like him?" "He seems like an okay guy. But if you're asking if I'm falling in love with him, the answer is no. There are other attractive guys in the class as well." We spent the next hour in the Chemistry lab and worked on our first really basic lab. When the bell rang to end the third period, Will and I packed up our books and headed up to our lockers. We met up with Rob as we passed his locker and then went down to the cafeteria. After grabbing our food, the three of us looked around for a table. Will tapped me on the shoulder and pointed to a table in the corner where David was sitting all alone. "Let's go say hello," Will said walking over towards him. "You guys know him?" Rob asked following Will. "Yeah, he's in our English class. Ian thinks he's cute." "Ahhh, a new boyfriend," Rob said winking at me. "Guys, don't do this," I begged turning red. "Mind if we sit with you?" Will asked, pulling a chair out beside David. David looked up and nodded, "Uh, no. Go ahead." "I'm Rob," Rob said sitting down across from David. "And this is Ian." "I'm Will. So what do you think of the school?" "It's okay. It's bigger than the school I used to go to. A lot more people." "So where are you from?" Rob asked. He pointed at me and added, "Ian here came from Toronto." "Steinbach, Manitoba," David replied. "Must've been tough to move in your senior year," Will added, "I don't know how you guys did it." "It isn't that bad," I replied, taking a bite of my burger. "So, did you have a girlfriend in Steinbach, David?" Will asked with a gleam in his eye. I damn near spit out the burger, and instead started choking. Rob hit me on the back, knocking it loose. I took a sip of my coke and tried not to glare at Will. "Are you all right, Ian?" David asked. "I'm fine. Something just went down the wrong pipe." I smiled at David and prayed that Will would behave. "So where were we?" Will asked rhetorically. "Oh yeah. So, did you have a girlfriend in Steinbach?" "No," David replied quietly, shaking his head. He looked down at his tray and started picking at his fries. "Well, I'm sure the girls here will be dying to go out on a date with you." Will took a bite of his burger and smiled at me from across the table. "So what do you have this afternoon?" Rob asked. David reached into his pocket and pulled out his schedule printout. "Um, History and Algebra." "With Gaines and Weber?" Will asked, grinning from ear to ear. "Uh, yeah." "Cool, we're all in those classes too," Will said. The four of us sat at the table, eating our lunch and talking. During lunch, I noticed David sneaking glances at me. I know Will had caught David taking some peeks, too, but that he was misreading the signals. I finished my fries and looked across the table. "Something wrong, David?" "Is your hair really white, or is it hair dye?" "It's white. I'm an albino." "Really, I thought albino's had pink eyes." "They do. I reached into my backpack and squirted some lens solution on my fingers. Holding my eye open with one hand, I plucked my emerald green lens off my left eyeball. I blinked a couple of times and looked at David. "See? Pink." "Do you have to do that at the table, Ian?" Will asked grimacing. Watching me take my contacts out or put them in always made him uncomfortable. "I didn't feel like going to the bathroom." I squirted the contact with solution and then popped it right back onto my eyeball. Another couple of blinks and things were back to normal. I looked at David, and smiled. "I wear the lenses so that I don't make people too uncomfortable. Anything else you wanted to know?" I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked," David replied. "I should get going." David grabbed his tray and started putting the garbage onto it. "It's all right, David. I don't mind answering questions about being an albino. These two," I jerked a thumb towards Rob and Will, "Had tonnes of questions." "Really?" "Really. It's a natural reaction when you encounter something different." "I was worried I had insulted you or something. But, I've really got to get going. I've got to go to the guidance counsellors office and fill out some more papers," David said. He grabbed his tray and smiled at the three of us, "It was a pleasure to meet the three of you. I'll see you next period." "See you," Will replied. Rob and I both nodded and watched as David walked away. "So, he seems like a nice enough guy," Rob said, finishing off his second burger. "So are you all hot and bothered now, Ian?" Will asked, finishing his drink. "Ha, ha. Very funny. He's a nice guy, but I'm not looking for a boyfriend." "You seldom find a girlfriend when you are actively looking. I'd imagine things are similar for boyfriends," Rob said. "Would a boyfriend really be a bad thing, Ian?" "I just don't want to get into a relationship while I am trying to get over Stefan and everything else." "Sounds logical." Rob opened up a Mars bar and took a big bite. "But isn't that like running away from the problem? Shouldn't you get back up on the horse, and try again?" Will asked, leaning back in his chair. "I don't want to be riding anything right now," I joked. Will rolled his eyes and shook his head. "I wasn't saying that you should go get laid, but should you be ruling out even looking for a boyfriend?" "I can't get close to anyone right now, in that way. I just don't feel that I can handle it right now." "So, if I were to hit on you, you'd be really uncomfortable?" Will asked. I laughed and leaned forward. "No, because I know you're straight. But if someone else hit on me, I'd panic." I leaned back in my chair and looked at Rob. "So, how is the football team going to do this year?" "We're gonna kick some butt," Rob replied with a laugh. "Nice subject change by the way." "Thanks," I replied with a grin. "You gonna come to the game on Saturday? We're playing Weyburn." "Sounds good," I replied. I looked across the table at Will. "You going to the game?" "Yeah, I love high school football." "What a lying shit," Rob said, looking at Will. "You just like the cheerleaders." "Can't a man admire beauty?" Will asked. "Men can, but who says you're a man?" Rob shot back. "Laura says I'm a man." "Laura?" I asked, looking at Will. "Laura from Halifax," Will replied with a grin. "Her name was Laura?" I asked. "Who's Laura?" Rob asked, looking from Will to me. So, Will told Rob about Jessica and the three days at the lake. He was remarkably circumspect, but he did manage to get all the important details across. The bell ending fourth period sounded as he finished telling us both the whole story. We dropped off our trays on the tray return, and walked off to a boring lecture in Canadian History. At least the teacher made an attempt to make things interesting. During class, I snuck glances at David and another couple of guys in class. The one thing that I noticed was that for a small town, there were a lot of hot guys here. The thing was I wasn't really all that attracted to any of them. They were really nice to look at, and David seemed like a really nice guy, but there just wasn't that spark. I chewed on the tip of my pen, and looked at the blackboard. I was having problems understanding why I wasn't attracted to anyone anymore. I mean, I could understand the desire not to have sex, but why wouldn't I want a boyfriend? Was it because a relationship might lead to sex? Or was it because that I'd have to trust someone again? The bell ending fifth period thankfully interrupted my thoughts. I grabbed my books and stood up. There was a loud bang as I knocked David's books to the floor. "I'm so sorry, David! My mind was elsewhere," I apologized, grabbing his History textbook and binder. "That's all right. No harm done." "You oughta be more careful, Ian" Will said walking over to where David and I were standing. "You could've run over poor David." "Whatever." "Ready for Algebra, David?" Rob asked, joining the three of us. "Actually, I'm ready for the day to end," David said. "School always seems to last forever." "No doubt," Will said. He led the way to algebra class, walking with David, while Rob and I trailed behind. On the way to class, Will told David about our algebra teacher. He was a bit of a goof. He always wore sweater vests and brown dress pants. "Why don't you invite David over to your house to go swimming?" Rob whispered behind my head. "You're almost as bad as Will," I whispered back. "But it is a good idea." "Hey, Will, David, did you guys want to come over and go swimming this afternoon? You could stay for supper afterwards, if you wanted too." "Sounds good to me," Will said. He looked over at David. "What do you think, David?" "Um, sure. I'll have to pick up my swim suit though." "That's okay. We usually skinny dip," Will said with a wicked grin. "You what?" David asked, stopping dead in the hallway. "Will's just kidding. We always wear swimsuits. He just wants to see you naked," I replied, hurrying past Will. "Hey!" Will chased after me, leaving Rob and David laughing a ways back in the hallway. When Will finally caught up with me, he leaned close to me and whispered, "Did you really want me to come, or did you want some time alone with David?" "I definitely want you to come. I only asked, because I knew you weren't doing anything." "Okay, sounds good." Will grabbed me around the neck and put me in a headlock as Rob and David came around the corner. "Okay, behave you two. I don't want to have to bust some heads," Rob said, punching his hand. "Yes, daddy." Will released the headlock and the four of us found our seats for Algebra. After class ended, we said good-bye to Rob and sent him on his way to football practice. Will and I followed David back to his house, and after he got his swimsuit and permission to go to my house, he crawled into the backseat of the car. "Are you sure that your mom doesn't mind?" "Nah, she's cool." "Cool." I drove over to Will's house and let him run in and grab his swimsuit. While he was inside, David and I talked about what our parent's did. David's mom was an agrologist, working for Cargill. His dad was a surgeon, and was taking over another doctor's practice. His mom had gotten a promotion, and had decided to take it. His dad was happy to move. He really didn't like Steinbach. He had been raised in Vancouver, and found Steinbach stifling. When Will finally got back to the car, I backed out of his driveway and drove towards my home. When I got home, I pulled into the driveway. My mom was out front painting the window trim. "Hi mom." "Hello boys. How was school today?" "It was good, Mrs. Reynolds." "Who's your new friend, Ian?" "This is David. David this is my mom." "Hello, David." "Mom, we're going to go swimming. Can David and Will stay for supper?" "Sure. All we're having is burgers and corn on the cob." "Sounds delicious, Mrs. Reynolds," David replied. "Well, you boys go have fun in the pool. I want to finish up this window before Mr. Reynolds gets home," My mom said, turning back to the window. David and Will followed me into the house and down into the basement. We each took turns changing in the bathroom, Will first, then David, and then me. Both David and Will looked really good in their swimsuits. I smiled at Will and said, "Why don't you take David up to the pool, Will? I'll be right up. "'Kay. C'mon David." David looked over his shoulder and smiled at me as he followed Will up the stairs. I slipped into the bathroom and changed into my baggy swim trunks. I still wasn't having any sexual fantasies, or urges. I did find out that my lack of desire for sex was completely normal for people who had been sexually assaulted. My therapist mentioned that with time, the desire would return. I walked out of the bathroom and out to the pool. David and Will were already in the pool splashing each other and generally having a good time. I dove into the deep end and surfaced near Will. I sprang out of the water, and using what little body weight I had, pulled Will under the surface. Will fought and drove for the surface. His head came up and he took a deep breath. "You little shit," He gasped, grabbing for me. "You're gonna pay for that." "Only if you can catch me." I swam away from Will, staying just out of his reach. "Need a hand?" David asked, moving towards me. "Yeah, let's get this turkey." Will herded me towards the middle of the pool. With that, David dove under the surface of the water and swam towards me. In no time at all he had caught me. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me down. David's embrace freaked me out and I began thrashing. David let me go when I elbowed him. He doubled up while I raced for the surface. I took a deep breath and turned to face David. He slowly surfaced and grimaced. "That hurt." "I'm so sorry, David," I said swimming over to the injured boy. "I just freaked out." "I wasn't going to drown you," David said, grimacing. "I know, and that isn't why I freaked out. I can't deal with people grabbing me." "But you can do this," Will said jumping up and pushing me under the water. I came up spitting out the water a couple seconds later. "Yeah, you can do that." I reached for Will, and jumped up on his shoulders. "You can also do this." I forced Will into the water and held him down for a few seconds. He came up sputtering, getting a laugh from me. David smiled and pushed me under the surface of the water. The three of us played for another couple of hours before my mom brought some burgers out to barbecue. Rob showed up after supper and joined us for another couple hours of swimming. That night when I went to bed, I tried to masturbate, but I couldn't get aroused. My penis remained limp as I stroked it. There was only the occasional twitch when I thought about David. Continued.
