I sat there in algebra II, hiding my Nintendo DS behind my binder. Now, I didn't always play games in class. Just, one day I realized that I did terrible weather I paid close attention or not. The teacher was talking about factoring with two parentheses or something like that, and I was playing Pokemon. I had considered paying attention in class today, really I had. But when I got in class I realized I lost my glasses during the fall. I can't see far, I have astigmatism, and I sit in the back of the class. Without my glasses I was hopeless in there. Only half an hour left. I sat there half listening to the teacher, half playing, while a pair of glowing hazel eyes and a brilliant grin stayed burned in my head. Dave... a random guy who I literally ran into who likes the same music as me. I have a few friends, but I don't really fell close to any of them. Maybe it's the gay thing. Hiding a big part of your life can distance you from people I guess. One person knows. His name is Troy and I've known him for ten of my fifteen years on earth. We fooled around a little bit, but he claims straight. The fact that he rarely initiates contact with me unless his stupid laptop is broken leads me to feel used. "Hey, how many badges do you have?" asked Aaron. Aaron sits in front of me. He's a runner from a huge family. He's just a bit shorter than me, curly hair, tons freckles. He gave me the idea in the first place. One day I saw him playing his Gameboy in class. "Uh...five. You?" Oh Pokemon, will I ever grow out of you? "Only two. I just started" Aaron replied. "Jack, Aaron, eyes forward. Jack, factor this problem" Mrs. Dew snapped. "Uh..." oh crap. I have no clue how to do this. "x + 3 and x - 4?" I guessed "Wrong. The correct answer is x + 4 and x - 3. Do you plan on passing this class?" She asked, before going on to someone else. The decent mood I was in after meeting Dave had dropped. I glued my eyes to the clock for the second time today. Mom was going to kill me for losing my glasses. Dad would kill me because he paid for them. I imagine my stepmom would kill me, just for good measure. I live with my mom and my oldest brother. My mom and my dad divorced when I was five. Me and Mike, my oldest brother, have different dads. My dad and my stepmom have two sons. Charles is two, and Glenn is six months. They are cute, for a while. Let's just say I'm glad I don't have to live with them. Come on...ring... It's almost the weekend. Not that I have much to do. Actually, I have nothing to do but clean, play final fantasy, and watch anime. At last the bell rang. I grabbed my stuff and having learned my lesson, slowly walked out the door into on to the concrete second story walk way of building three. "Hey, X squared plus four x minus five equals zero. Solve for x" came a familiar voice. I turned around. "Dave?" as I turned around my dull brown met his glowing hazel eyes. For a few brief seconds I felt like we were the only two people in the world, gazing into each other's eyes. Was I falling for this guy? "Missing something, blindie?" Dave pulled my glasses out of his pocket. "YES! Dave you totally saved me again! My parents would have killed me!" I grabbed my glasses "I just got called out in class for not knowing how to factor" "Don't let it get you down J. Dew is totally a closet lesbian who's denying it in her head, causing her to be a total bitch." Dave laughed. I wondered, what did that comment mean about Dave? Was he homophobic? Or did he accept gay people? "Haha, yeah." I had to admit, Mrs. Dew totally seemed like the closet lesbian type. "So what do little tenth graders do on the weekends now? Hi-jack busses and knock up nuns?" Joked Dave. "Uh... Play Final Fantasy, watch anime, and wish I was anywhere else doing anything else with a anyone. What do eleventh graders do?" I asked "Same thing for me. All my friends are busy with their girlfriends, totally lame" Dave sighed looking kind of sad. "Aww...I'm sorry Da-"my phone began to ring and cut me off. I reached into the pocket of my cargo khaki shorts and pulled out my orange and white phone. "Hello? What? Ugh...but mom...It's Friday! It's not my fault you...Ugh...Fine" I hung up and frowned. "Whoa, what's up J?" Dave asked. "Mom. I have to go wait with her at work for an hour, after she finally gets here, then we have to go run errands. If I'm lucky I'll be home in two hours" I sighed glumly. "Aww, no way man..." Dave thought a bit, walked over to the bench, and motioned for me to follow him. We sat down. "If you want, I could give you a ride home, if you don't mind heading by my place first. "Wow! Really?" I get a ride home AND a chance to hang out with Dave? Awesome! "Let me ask mom." I called my mom and told her about Dave and his offer. She wasn't so sure about it at first, but after I told her about the fall, and going to the nurse, and my glasses, she said it was fine and that she wanted to meet the guy who helped me. "Mom said yes! She said thanks for helping me out, and that she wants to meet you." "Awesome! Oh yeah, you get to meet my moms. I hope that's ok" Dave seemed excited. "Moms? You have more than one?" I asked, slightly confused. "Yeah, remember how I said Dew was a bitch because she had that whole mental conflict thing going on? My mom did that too, and then she just decided to accept it. Her and my dad divorced a few years before that. I was eleven at the time; she explained to me that it was ok for a girl to love another girl, and for a guy to love another guy. Eventually mom brought home this nice lady named Shannon. A few months later Shannon moved in with us and mom declared Shannon her life partner. Dad got a laugh out of the whole event." Dave explained "Wow, that's really cool Dave. I can't wait to meet them." I beamed, Dave had lesbian parents, he had to be accepting of gays. Shoot, maybe if I was really lucky he might be gay himself. Nah, I'm not that lucky. Even if he was, he's bound to have a boyfriend. "You ready to go Jack?" Dave grabbed his book and stood up. "Yup! Let's go!" I grabbed my bags and followed Dave to the parking lot. He waved and said hi to a few people on the way, I felt cool just being with him. We eventually got to his car. A dark blue 2006 Scion xB. "Like my car? Dad got it for me for my birthday. Dad's a translator for some big company, so he's always running around the world. His parents forced him to learn French, Spanish, German, and Japanese when he was a kid, I guess it paid off. He makes loads, but he's always busy. He has a pretty cool house in New York; he isn't there too often though. But he always makes sure to fly here for my birthday. He and mom get along pretty well." Dave explained "Whoa! My dad is just a maintenance man for the school system. My mom is a struggling restaurant owner. They divorced when I was five. We're pretty poor, but we manage" I smiled. Dave looked at me kind of sad. "Well, your chariot waits!" Dave got in the car and I got in the front seat. He popped in a cd and suddenly the car was filled with the familiar tune of `Kimi to Iu Hana', the song that skyrocketed my favorite band, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, to fame. "Nice song. It's one of their best." We pulled out of the school parking lot and I glanced over at him. He was wearing a pair of cargo khakis like mine, and his black Nano-Mugen fest tee shirt. His legs were sort of hairy, and his legs led down to a pair of feet with a pair of flip flips on them. His car was clean for the most part, except for a few stray papers. He was really cute, had great taste in music, he was nice, semi clean... I think I was falling. "You hungry?" Dave asked "Nah, not really" I lied. "Yeah you're bad at lying. You didn't have lunch today. I'm starving, your starving, let's get lunch! Is sonic ok?" Dave asked "Sure!" I smiled. He wasn't making me like him any less. We into a parking lot and he examined the menu. "I'm gonna get a double cheese burger, tots, and a shake. What about you little dude? Dave asked "Uh...I want a burger soo bad... but I swore off red meat a few months ago...I'll get chicken strips I guess, and a cherry limeade" I replied "What? No red meat? You're so weird, you and mom and Shannon will get along great. They are vegetarians too. I like my meat." Dave said. He likes his meat? Oh god how can I not giggle at that one. Dave ordered for us and I pulled out my lunch money and handed it to him. "What's this for?" Dave asked "The food?" I replied. "Oh no no no. You're the guest, and I offered, I'm paying." He said in his insisting tone of voice. "What? No way! Let me pay" Mom always taught me to be polite and pay for myself. "Jeez J, remind me not to take you out for lunch again" Dave smiled at me. "Listen, I'm paying. End of story" "Ok ok, fine." I grinned at Dave, and we sat there like that, just smiling at each other until the lady came with our food. Dave paid her and we began to chow down. I forgot how hungry I was as I wolfed down my chicken tenders and slurped up my cherry limeade. Dave watched and laughed "Wow, I didn't mean to keep the ravenous beast from his beloved feed for so long." Dave lauged as he ate his burger faster than a normal person would. "You aren't so dainty yourself" I replied, still smiling at him. "Yeah yeah, be nice, I saved your beloved glasses AND bought you food" Dave reminded me. His smirk was charming. "All right, ready to head to my place?" Dave asked "Yup! Let's go!" I beamed at Dave. I don't think I could frown around him. We pulled out of sonic and down the highway. While we drive he told me about his moms. His biological mom, Sarah, was a dentist, and Shannon was a psychologist. They both had high hopes for their son Dave. Dave didn't really have much of a plan. I told him about my mom, and dad, and brothers. He seemed genuinely interested, himself being an only child. We eventually pulled up to the entrance to a gated community. "Wow, rich boy lives in a fancy neighborhood" I joked. "Yeah, it's pretty nice. It's got all the tennis courts and the gym and pool and all that, but it's a real pain to try to get guests in here. You have to call ahead, tell the gate keeper what the person's name is, what they will be driving, then they have to navigate thought this stupid maze." Dave explained. We drove past the gate and in to the neighborhood. After driving a bit we parked in front of a nice two story house. It had a concrete drive way, a two car garage, a well kept lawn, vinyl siding. It was a pretty nice place. "Well, let's go" Dave and I got out of the car and I followed. We walked through his front door and he shouted "Mom, I'm home, and I brought a friend" He called me his friend, wow. "Just a sec sweetie, I'll be right there." A voice called out. Suddenly, two figures emerged from the door way in front of us. One was tall, about David's height, long, straight, dark hair, thin and slightly tan. She was wearing a White blouse and tan pants. The other was slightly shorter, about my height. She had shoulder length black hair, a little less tan, also thin. She was wearing a Light blue tank top and similar pants. "Mom, Shannon, this is Jack" Dave introduced me. "Hello Jack, I'm David's mom, you can call me Sarah" She smiled sweetly at me. "Hi! I'm his other mom, you can call me Shannon!" She had a huge grin. "Hi, I'm Jack." I nervously replied "Come on J!" Dave motioned as he walked up stairs. "Nice to meet you both" I nodded my head slightly and followed after Dave. _______________________________________________________________________________ ~End Part 2~ Thanks a lot to everyone who emailed me about part one!
