The people filling the benches couldn't believe that the judge had become angry. They wondered if it was over Michael's words or the fact that the DA had pulled a fast one on the system. Without Nadine Brookmeir knowing about it her ex-husband Craig had slipped into the court room and now sat in the centre watching the proceedings with interest. What got to Craig was the fact that the kid had the guts to stand up and call Nadine to the carpet. Craig's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the judge's voice. "Ms. Brookmeir, could you please explain you actions to this court, and be careful of what you say." "Your honor, I feel that I do not have to explain anything to this court, other than the fact that Mr. Caine here has refused to meet with me on numerous occasions. Yes I did try to have him arrested and brought out here to be questioned, but every time that happened, he somehow was able to have my action's overturned. Now that he is here and in a court room where he has no choice but to answer me. Your honor I would like to call Mr. Caine to the stand." Nadine stated snidely. "Objection your honor, this is a ploy by Ms. Brookmeir to intimidate my client." Littlebear said as he stood. "Your honor I have some questions for Mr. Caine and I would like them answered." Brookmeir responded. "It is okay Sir, I will take the stand." Michael stated with a smile. "Mr. Caine, do you understand the ramifications of your actions, if you take the stand you will have to answer the questions." "Oh I understand sir. I just hope that Ms. Brookmeir understands what she is doing." Michael said with a laugh. "Oh boy." Joseph and Talbert whispered together. Judge North looked at Michael and with a smile nodded his head. "Very well Mr. Caine please take the stand." Sitting in the witness box, Michael adjusted his jacket before he looked at Brookmeir then the Judge. "Your honor, before we start I would like to ask that a copy of this transcript be sent to the Attorney General and to Ms. Brookmeir's boss." "I think we can arrange that Mr. Caine." Judge North said with a chuckle. "Mr. Caine." Brookmeir started. "What do you know of Jason Heilman?" "Ms. Brookmeir, that has nothing to do with this case before the court today." "Mr. Caine answer the question." Brookmeir snapped. "I did ma'am." "Mr. Caine, when did you first meet Jason Heilman?" "Again ma'am that has nothing to do with this case, so please stick to what we are doing here today." "Mr. Caine, you are a rather impudent person aren't you?" "Thank you ma'am." "Mr. Caine why did you conspire to kill your own brother?" "Excuse me, what the hell did you just say?" "You heard me Mr. Caine." "Your honor, if may we have a word with my client?" "Yes, you may, court is in recess for fifteen minutes." Judge North said as he stood. Both Talbert and Littlebear waited as Michael let the stand and walked over to them. "Michael I have to say that so far you have done very well, but that last outburst of yours could lead her to push you into saying something that will leave Judge North no option but to find you in contempt. When you go back up there think of the three boys sitting behind us, and think of what Tommy would do if he heard what was going on." Talbert said. "I know, but she is starting to piss me off." "That is what she wants." Joseph stated. "So, I just have to bite my tongue and go with what she is implying?" Michael asked. "No, because we are going to put a stop to her questions on the death of your brother." Talbert said. "Fine, let's get this show over with so I can have some fun before I have to head home." When the fifteen minutes were up Judge North came back in, this time there was a little more bounce in his steps. With Michael back on the stand Brookmeir once more stood, but again before she could say anything John Talbert stood also. "Your honor." He started. "We ask the court to strike any and all questions in regards to the death of Mr. Caine's brother Tommy, we also ask that Ms. Brookmeir cease with that line of questioning." "So noted Mr. Talbert, Ms. Brookmeir, do you wish to say something?" Judge North asked. "Your honor, this is my only hope of getting answers to any questions about the death of Thomas Caine." "No Ms. Brookmeir, you had your chance. Now state your reasons for seizing Mr. Caine's asset." "I only used that as an excuse your honor. "I see. So this whole thing about you wanting to seize his assets was just a ploy to have him come out here for your pleasure?" Judge North snapped. "And what about this Heilman case that Mr. Caine mentioned, have to continually postponed it just because you couldn't get your way?" "I? I had questions your honor that only Mr. Caine could have answered." "Ms. Brookmeir were you not told that if you wanted to see Mr. Caine that you were to fly to Naples Florida and talk to him there?" "Yes sir I was." "Very well Ms. Brookmeir. Your application to seize Mr. Caine's assets is hereby denied. Furthermore, I am ordering you to cease any further communications with Mr. Caine unless it is truly needed. I further order you to pay Mr. Caine not only the cost of his trip out here, but an additional 200 thousand dollars for the hassles that you have caused him. Case is dismissed." Judge North said as he brought down his gavel. Scott, Cory and Derrick were smiling when Michael stood and gave Joseph a handshake. Leaving the front the three boys walked a head of Michael and were just passed the centre when Craig Brookmeir stood up and stepped out behind Michael. Scott had just turned back to say something when he saw Michael falling and Craig standing there with a Blackjack in his hand. "No one talks to my woman like that boy." Craig said just as Scott launched himself at the man. Michael was unconscious, Scott was beating the hell out of Craig when the bailiff ran up and pulled him off. As Scott was being held by the bailiff, three state troopers ran in and grabbed Craig Brookmeir and cuffed him. Cory and Derrick were kneeling beside Michael when Judge North and Michael's two lawyers ran up. Joseph seeing the situation quickly called for an ambulance while John Talbert held the young boys. Scott was mad, he was trying to get free of the bailiff so he could beat Craig more, but the more he fought the tighter he was held. Judge North stood and walked over to Scott and placing a gentle hand on his shoulders shook his head. "Calm down son, your friend will be okay, and this gentleman is going to jail." "He.. He had no reason to hit Michael." Scott yelled. "No son he didn't, but you beating on him isn't going to help Mr. Caine and I don't want to see you in jail, even though I wold strongly suggest to any judge that you acted in the defence of a friend, but that won't help you, and you have two little guys to look after." Cory seeing how angry Scott was came over and held his hand as Derrick stood trembling in Talbert's arms. "Come on Uncle Scott you got to take care of us until daddy is better." Cory said and held on tighter. "I am sorry Cory, you're right. What do you say we all go with Michael to the hospital, then we can figure out how to get home? I knew this was a bad idea, but Michael had to follow your ruling Sir." "Yes he did, and I am sorry for your friend, if it helps any I am sure that the court will pay for Mr. Caine's hospital bill." Nadine Brookmeir, saw her ex-husband knock Michael unconscious and smiled to herself. "The brat had come to close to the truth when he said she was related to Heilman." Gathering her papers and bag she started to walk out of the court room when she was stopped. "Ms. Brookmeir I am with the Attorney General's office, if you could please come with me the Attorney General would like to have a few words with you." A smart dressed lady stated. ""I am sorry, but I have other appointments and I can't be late for them." Brookmeir replied rather quickly. "No, Ms. Brookmeir you have only one appointment and that is right now. If you refuse I can make sure that you are locked up for a good three years. Maybe I can even find a deep dark hole for you to rot in, your choice." "Fine, let's go meet with your boss." Nadine wasn't happy, but at least she got to see Michael get himself hurt, even though it was her ex-husband, she still had to smile at the look on the other's faces as he fell. In a small interview room not far from the courtroom Attorney General, Justin Tyme sat with Nadine Brookmeir's file in front of him. He had read it the night before and now had gone over it again. The light knock on the door broke his daydreaming. Putting his feet back on the floor Justin straighten up his tie and jacket just as the door opened. The lady escorting Nadine stepped in and off to the side as Nadine entered. "Come in Ms. Brookmeir, I won't be keeping you long." Justin said from behind the desk. "Good afternoon sir." Nadine said as she took a seat. "Ms. Brookmeir, how long have you been with the DA's office?" Justin asked. "Ten years sir, why do you ask?" "During that time how many cases have you held out of court for over a year?" "Only one sir, but that was due to the witness having a heart attack." "I see, and this Heilman case, why didn't it go before a judge?" "I needed some answers from a potential witness, but he refused to come see me." "I see, and what about the tape, you did listen to it did you not?" "Yes sir, I listened to the whole thing." "Ms. Brookmeir, during your frantic chase to talk to Mr. Caine, Jason Heilman has gone to trial for the rape and murder of twelve children. The evidence used in his case was there in front of you and you refused to see it. Furthermore, as of noon today Jason Heilman was extradited to Florida to stand trial for the murder of Thomas (Tommy) Caine." "Sir with all due respect that was my case." "Was is the right word Ms. Brookmeir, but thanks to your boss DA Grange, it was passed on to another who took it all the way to sentencing. Ms. Brookmeir, with the approval of Mr. Grange, I am hereby terminating your employment with the state of Texas. I am also revoking your license to practice law anywhere within this state and I furthermore will be informing the Federal Attorney General of my actions here today." "You can't do that." "I can do that and I have done it, your office has been sealed and your personal items shall be packed and taken to the front desk for you to pick up this afternoon. That is all Ms. Brookmeir." Michael woke up in the hospital, a doctor and nurse standing on each side of the bed. Just moving his eyes Michael could see that he was in a curtained room, the bright lights hurting his eyes a bit causing him to groan. "I see you're awake, young man." The doctor said with a smile. "You have a few friends worried about you." "What happened?" Michael asked. "Well you took a nasty hit to the back of your head, you will be alright, just a headache for a few days." "Can I get out of here, and what time is it?" "Well you can leave when I sign the papers, though I would prefer you to stay overnight, as for the time, well it is just after 8 pm." "Shit, my little brother, I have to feed him and make sure he is okay." "Oh I think that has been looked after." "What do you mean?" "Young man, you just relax." The nurse said. "How can I relax, I have to find Cory." "Cory and the others are out in the waiting room along with a bunch of FBI and a few state troopers." The doctor interrupted. "Huh. You mean the police are watching them?" "Yes, I think you have friends in high places, it seems like the attorney General ordered you and your friends protected." "Why, I never did anything for him?" "I don't know, now relax and let's see about getting you out of here and back with everyone." "Fine." To Be Continued: The following piece is from the book Little Hands: Please enjoy.
