Malcolm answered laughing at the joy he could hear in Patricks' voice. "Okay what time?" Patrick asked "Seven thirty don't be late." "I won't and thanks." "No problem, oh I will have something for you also." "What?" "You'll see." "Tell me." "Nope, have a good sleep Patrick." "You too dude, and thanks for a great day." "No problem, now go to bed or you won't make it in time." "Yeah right, I bet I'm there before you." "Your on, a week of homework done by the loser." "Sweet, I am going to love this." "See you in the morning." "Night Malcolm." Patrick hung up and hugged his parents good night then headed off to bed, setting his alarm for six. His sleep was quiet; all he could dream of was Malcolm and him being friends, hanging together, and both laughing and just being crazy. Six thirty the next morning Patrick was sitting at their table waiting for Malcolm to show up, he had a glass of juice and was watching the door when Malcolm walked in. "You gonna be doing lots of homework dude, I beat you here." Patrick laughed "That you did, how long have you been sitting here?" Malcolm asked a crooked smile on his face, his eyes showing a bit of sleep still remaining. "Half hour. Now what do you have for me?" "This, but take it to the bathroom first." "Okay, but this better not be a nasty." "Never crossed my mind." "Yeah sure." "Trust me now go while I order us breakfast." "Okay, I want your usual if I can?" "Sure two usual's coming up, now get going or we'll be late." Taking the bag Patrick stood and walked into the bathroom, once inside Patrick opened the bag and saw that Malcolm had brought him a complete set of clothes; taking them out of the bag he saw that the jeans were brand new, along with the t-shirt socks, undershorts and shirt. Quickly changing he looked at himself and smiled, the clothes fit perfect. Walking back Malcolm had to smile Patrick looked awesome. "I thought I had gotten them right, but they all fit perfect." "I can't accept these." "You can and will, they sure won't fit me, and don't worry what others will say, now eat and lets get to class." "Okay, but my parent's will have a fit when they see me in these." "No they won't." "Uh huh." After breakfast, the two boys made their way over to the school. Both boys were laughing and joking around so they did not see the three seniors that had been giving Patrick a hard time pull up. Inside the school, the hallway was packed and noisy, the first bell had just gone, and Patrick was still at his locker when the three seniors showed up. Pushing Patrick against his locker the leader of the seniors group started mouthing off. "Well if it ain't the loser, where you steal them clothes trash?" The senior snarled. "I didn't steal them and I am not a loser like some others around me here." Patrick snapped back. "Are you calling me a loser?" The bullied snarled louder, drawing the attention of others students. "No, he isn't but I am; now back off and leave him alone." Malcolm snapped. "Well well, looks like he has a boyfriend who is sticking up for him." The first bully laughed. "You mean sticking it up him." Laughed one of the other bullies. "I think you three should get to class, before you're late." Malcolm spoke calmly. "You gonna make us?" "No, but if you try anything, you might regret it, now I am warning you to back off, leave him and me alone." "You warning us, why you're nothing but a fag, with that long hair of yours. I bet you would piss yourself if I raised a hand to you." "Look, I don't want trouble, and I have warned you once, now I am warning you again back off." The hallway had all of a sudden become very quiet and still, no one could believe what they were hearing. The seniors had always gotten away with picking on everyone, and now here was Malcolm standing up to them. All the students were watching Patrick and Malcolm facing the bullies. "Dude, no one warns me to back off, I do what I please." The first bully snarled. "Patrick, move away from these jerks. Now you think you're a big man, with your friends with you, well I think the three of you are nothing but losers. And I am giving you, your last warning, leave us alone." Whispered Malcolm, a calmness to his voice that sent a shiver down Patrick's spine. The first bully thought that it would be easy to teach Malcolm a lesson, so with his friends he came at him. With two quick palm thrusts the first bully was on the floor as the other two tried to grab Malcolm. Dropping to a squat Malcolm swept the legs from under the two and then stood and walked away. It was over in a minute the three all laid out on the floor with a look of shock in their eyes. "Malcolm duck." Patrick yelled. There was no holding back this time. When two of the teachers finally showed up it was over and the three were taken out of the school by ambulance. Malcolm was sent to the office and was sitting there waiting for his parents to show up. Patrick was sent to his English class and was trying not to think of what had happened and to do his work, but he couldn't. "Ma'am, may I be excused please." He asked. Standing before she could even answer he closed his books and headed to the door. Out in the hallway he met with others and leading the way he took off towards the office. Once there everyone stopped and Patrick walked in. Seeing Malcolm sitting there he smiled, "How you doing?" Patrick asked as he stepped into the office. "Okay, looks like I am about to get the boot from here though." Malcolm replied. A bit of hurt and frustration in his voice. "No way dude." Turning Patrick spoke with the secretary. Ma'am can you ask the Principle if he could step into the hallway for a minute please." "Sure Patrick, but he is waiting for Malcolm's parents to show up." She replied. "Ma'am it is important." "Very well." "Hang in there dude, you have more friends than you know." Patrick whispered. "Yeah right. I wish." Malcolm said forcing a smile on his lips. "Trust me, now I have to get out there before the principle does." "Thanks Patrick." Out in the hallway Patrick and the other students waited, they saw Malcolm's parents come in. just as the principle stepped out. "What is this, why are you all standing here and not in class." The principle asked "Sir, it is because of Malcolm, you're going to kick him out for fighting and we feel that wouldn't be fair. Those three have picked on a lot of us this year so far, and when some one finally stood up and said no more, they attacked him. Sir, Malcolm gave them three chances to back off, but they didn't, in fact they threw the first punch, the fact Malcolm put them on their butts after kinda gave us all a look at what they were. Then when Malcolm was walking to his locker the tried to hit him from behind. So sir all he did was defend himself." "I see, well when the three of them wake up the police are going to talk to them, and then they will come and want to talk to all who witnessed the fight." "Please sir, don't kick him out." Patrick asked. "Well something has to be done about him fighting." "I know sir, but why not just give him a detention?" "Let me talk with his parent's and then with Malcolm I will make my decision then." "Yes sir." "Now all of you go back to class." After the students had gone back to their classes and Malcolm's parents had come and taken him home. The principle met with one of the police officers, Malcolm's English teacher and the parents of the three bullies. "Well everyone it seems that we have a problem here, and that problem is Malcolm Daniels. He almost killed your three." The principle said as he looked at the senior's parent. I have heard from his English teacher that he is disruptive in class, and has no respect for school policies. Officer I want Malcolm Daniels charged with three counts of aggravated assault. I have also expelled him from the school, with a notice going to the school board this afternoon." The principle finished and Malcolm's English teacher them spoke her words, none were complimentary to Malcolm. No one saw Malcolm for the rest of the morning. Patrick had been given a detention for not paying attention in his Math class. At lunch the police were there and had set up in the auditorium and were questioning everyone that saw the fight. As the first bell for the afternoon rang the police had finished and the students were back in class. Patrick walked home that afternoon thinking that he would never see Malcolm again. Walking in his home he just went to his room and started his homework, he didn't hear the phone ring or his mother calling for him. Giving up on his homework Patrick lay on his bed and just cried. Here he had made a friend and now he was sure he would never see him again. At dinner time Patrick was still doing his work when his dad opened the door to his room. "Patrick, its dinner time." His dad said. "Its okay dad I'm not hungry." Patrick whispered. "Come on son you have to eat." "Okay, just a bit." "That's my boy." "Dad, you got a minute?" "Sure Patrick. Is something bothering you?" "Kinda." "Well tell me about it, maybe I can help you find an answer." "You always told us to stand up for what we feel is right and not to back down no matter what, right?" "Yes." "Well this morning at school, there was a fight and well I think one of the boys got kicked out because of it." "Well if he was fighting then yes the school should expel him." "What if he did it in self defense, or was trying to protect others from bullies." "Then that makes a difference. Tell me everything that happened." "Well there were three guys, they're in grade ten and they been picking on a lot of kids in the lower grades. This morning, they got in my face and well Malcolm told them to back off." "Did they?" "They backed off me and started on him, he told them again to back off before they regretted it. Dad he warned them three times before the bullies threw a punch. I don't know what happened next, but the three ended up on there butts. Malcolm turned and started walking away, when they tried to hit him from behind, I warned Malcolm to duck and well the three ended up in the hospital." "Well, from what you have said Malcolm was in the right. He did warn the boys, and the fact they tried to hit him from behind and he defended himself, leads me to believe that your friend was in the right." "Then why did the School boot him out?" "Do you know for sure they did that?" "No, but he wasn't in classes after the fight." "Well why don't you phone him and ask?" " I don't know his number." "Well I tell you what, why don't you wait and see if he comes to school tomorrow." "Will it be okay if I left early?" "Sure, why do you think he will show up." "I hope so." "Come on lets eat." "Okay and thanks dad." "Anytime Patrick, I will always listen when any of you have a problem." At Michael's place the next morning Patrick was just sitting waiting, hoping that Malcolm would show up. By seven Maggie had come over and sat with him. "You're waiting for young Malcolm to show?" "Yes ma'am, but it looks like he won't." Patrick said. "No he won't, I am sorry, look why don't I make you some waffles and get you some juice, on the house." Maggie answered. " I'm not really hungry. Do you know why he won't be here?" Patrick asked "You didn't hear then?" "Hear what?" "Malcolm's dad stopped by this morning and told me our young friend was arrested for assault, he is in jail." "NOOO, it was self defense, every one knows that even the cops." Patrick cried, startling some of the other customers in the place. "Well that will come out in court, but he did put three boys in the hospital." "I know half the school saw it. I gotta go, and Ma'am thanks." "Listen Patrick, I know Malcolm wouldn't do something this bad unless it was for the protection of himself, his family or his friends. So you do what you think is right." "What is the right thing to do?" "You will know, just listen with your heart." "I will; can I come back later?" "Any time young man, this is Malcolm's table, but I guess it is yours now too." At school when everyone was in their home rooms waiting for the start of announcements Patrick was thinking again about Malcolm and the way he had stuck up for him. "Good morning students." The speakers crackled. "Just a few announcements today, first the drama club is holding auditions for there Christmas pageant; that will be after classes today and tomorrow. There will be an assembly this afternoon before class start and all students and teachers are to attend. Now yesterday there was a fight in the hall and three boys were sent to hospital, the fourth boy Malcolm Daniels has been expelled and charge with aggravated assault. This school will not put up with that kind of behavior from any student. Thank you and have a great day." You could hear the whispers in the class rooms, most were saying that the school was wrong and that it was self defense, even some of the teachers who knew Malcolm from their classes where whispering. At lunch as the teachers were sitting in their lunch room, they noticed that the principle was smiling as he talked with Patrick's English teacher. "Well we got rid of Daniels, him and his long hair and mouthy ways." The principle smiled. " Well I was about to expel him from my classes, he seems to know too much about the poems and writings of Michael King, claims he was his uncle." The English teacher replied. "Well we don't have to worry, the brat is going to jail for a while, the parents of those three are good friends of mine and those three would never bully students." The principle replied "So you're going to make sure Daniels goes to jail?" The teacher asked, a smile on her weathered face. "I already have, I changed the report that the students gave me. I even asked the police to omit the fact the three were given any warnings to back off. I mean look at him, his long hair, the kid is too arrogant, and look at how the others look up to him. No it doesn't matter what happens he won't be back here." "Nice, now we better get to the auditorium, the bell is about to ring." After the assembly as the students went to their classes the principle felt like he was on a high. The teachers on the other hand had heard enough and before they started teaching they asked the students that saw the fight to write down again everything they had seen. Patrick who was in socials at the time raised his hand. "Yes Patrick?" "Why do we have to write it out again, the principle and the cops have it already?" Patrick asked. " Well, let's just say that it will help, you all and it will also help your friend." Patrick's teacher replied. "Oh." All day, class after class Patrick was seen writing notes in his little binder. After school all the students gathered outside and waited. Patrick's older brothers and sister were there also wondering just what Patrick was thinking. When he came out he took a look around, he saw all the students standing there. His oldest brother right in front. "Patrick, what are you planning, all day you been writing and making notes." His older brother asked. "Yeah, but I don't know yet, I gotta talk with a friend and dad before I can even think of doing something." Patrick answered. "You are going to help Malcolm right?" another student asked. "Yeah, but I can't do it alone." "Does this look like your alone bro, Malcolm stopped three bullies and now he's being screwed, so let us all help." His brother spoke up as he looked at the rest of the students gathered with him. "Okay, but let me talk to dad and my friend first, then in the morning we can all meet back here, before school starts." "Okay, what time?" "Well it starts at eight fifteen so let's make it quarter to eight." "Dude, I hope you do something." another student piped up. "I will." Leaving the group Patrick headed home where he didn't even start his home work; he just sat and waited for his dad to get home. His mother was in the kitchen making dinner, softly humming to herself, the rest of his brothers and sisters were doing their homework or watching t.v. At five his dad came through the door, hanging up his jacket he washed his hands and then sat in the kitchen with his wife and Patrick. "Mom, dad, can we talk please?" "Can it wait till after dinner?" His mother asked." "Not really." "Oh, well then I guess dinner can wait." "Thanks." Patrick was just about to start when his brothers and sisters joined them. "Mom, Dad you always told us to stand up for what was right no matter what the case may be, well, today Malcolm is sitting in jail because he defended himself. The cops are charging him with aggravated assault. It wasn't, it was self defense, and two of the teachers think he should be put in jail for life." "So what are you going to do son?" dad asked. "One I want to go to court and help Malcolm just like he helped me and others. The other thing is I was thinking of maybe a student strike against the school." "Patrick, you know we want you to get an education, how can you think of something like that." "Mom, I thought about it all day, it's not fair that Malcolm sits in jail, because of some bullies. It's not fair that the three bullies get off from trying to hurt him. All I am asking is if you will stand behind me in what I feel is right." "Well I don't know Patrick, your putting yourself into something that can hurt you." "I know mom, but I feel this is right." "So do we mom, Malcolm didn't have to stand up to those guys, he could have let them beat the pulp out of Patrick, but he didn't. So I am with Patrick on this." His older brother spoke up." "So are we, he won't be alone." The others spoke up. "Well honey, looks like we have a rebel in the family." The dad spoke with a smile on his face. "That we do, and yes kids I will stand with you." "So will I son." mom spoke up With his family behind him he had to get others with him, like the rest of the students, but he wanted maybe to get Maggie's help also. The next morning Patrick was up and gone by six rushing over to Michael's place he got there just as the door opened. For an hour he sat and spoke with Maggie letting her know just what he was going to do for his friend and asking her for help. "Patrick, I have known Malcolm for a very long time, and no sweeter boy is there, I will help you and I will get others to help also. Now eat breakfast, you need your strength if your going to do this." "But I got no money." "Don't you worry about that, every morning you come here you can have breakfast and not have to worry about it." "What will Michael say if he knows your giving free meals out?" "I think he would say good job Maggie." "Thanks." Over at the school Patrick was sitting on the top step when the students started showing up. To say he was nervous would have been a laugh, he was down right scared at what he was about to do. By quarter too eight everyone was there and waiting for Patrick to say something. "Hi every one." Patrick started. "I really hope that what I am doing is right, my heart says it is, and I know I can't do it alone. I talked with my parents and another friend about this and they are behind me so are my brothers and sisters, what I know is that the school and the cops were wrong in charging Malcolm, so since we can't do anything about the cops we can do it here at school, what I want to do is a student strike. What I mean is we go inside, but we sit in the lunch room, halls and where ever, and not go to classes till the school admits it was wrong." "That won't happen." a boy in the back of the group spoke up." "It will if we all do this together, if just one goes to a class we lose and so does Malcolm. The other thing is, I think we should show Malcolm support by going to court and being with him." "Great and how do we get there, and when we are there what are we going to do?" "You leave that to me and a few of the other teachers." Patrick's socials teacher spoke up. "Though I do not think a strike will help, the teachers will help you and stand with you in this. A few of us talked it over last night, and feel the system was wrong, so yes most of us are with you." The teacher spoke. "Thank you sir. Now everyone what do you say, do we do this, or do we let the bullies win." Patrick asked, as he looked at the others standing there. "WE DO THIS" Yelled everyone.
