Love Me

Chapter - 25

Ryan's Appendix

Ryan is at Riley's house having pizza with his second family. He's enjoying the company as usual and enjoying the food. It's been a sort of a crazy day. He went over what he needed for college with his parents. He's also been having some abdominal pain, which he assumed was stress-related. He's been experiencing some real stress lately. Having this pain wouldn't be surprising, but Ryan is seriously sick, and he's not even totally aware of it. What is about to happen is going to catch everyone off guard.

***

Ryan and Riley are up in Riley's room reading over Riley's latest skateboarding magazine. From nowhere, Ryan's pain is back, and it drops Ryan down to his knees. His eyes are filled with tears. Ryan and Riley are both scared.

"HELP...HELP, PLEASE!"

Riley's screaming reaches Jared's ears first, and he is instantly in panic mode. He's never heard Riley's voice filled with this much fear and fright.

"CADEN UPSTAIRS NOW!"

Caden had been outside with Smoke when Riley yelled, but now that he is back inside, he hears Jared's yell. Jared runs into the bedroom, and Caden runs upstairs.

"What's wrong?"

Caden asks as he enters the room. He sees Ryan on the floor and Riley kneeling down by his boyfriend's side. The teens have tears running down their faces. Jared already has his phone out, ready to call 911.

"It hurts. It hurts my be-lly bu-tton."

Ryan manages to get the words out. Jared instantly recognizes what might be happening. He leaves the room while Caden stays to try to comfort the teens. Jared makes the call as soon as he is clear of the room.

"911, what is your emergency?"

He has to be quick because he knows time is critical.

"My boyfriend's brother has a friend over, and I think the friend is having an appendix attack. He's on the floor in pain. I think an ambulance should pick him up."

The 911 operator gets all the needed information.

"I'm going to have my partner call his parents."

Jared tells the operator, so they don't have to worry about doing it.

"Sir, I have an ambulance on the way to your location."

Jared says as he peeks into the bedroom.

"Thank you! The teen is upstairs; should we get him downstairs?"

The operator's son went through this a few months ago, so she is very sensitive to the teen's pain. She is careful in her response to Jared.

"If he is in too much pain, keep him where he is at. I can let the EMTs know where the patient is at. Do you have someone who can stay with him till the ambulance arrives?"

He can head downstairs to wait for the ambulance, and Caden can stay with Ryan and Riley. Jared returns to the bedroom and approaches Caden.

"Hey Babe, the 911 operator wants one of us to stay up here, and then the other one of us would need to be downstairs to meet the ambulance crew when they arrive."

Jared tells Caden as he holds the phone close to his ear.

"Since you have the phone, go downstairs, and if anything changes up here, I'll text you or use the intercom to message you."

Caden suggests to his boyfriend.

"Sounds good; I'm headed downstairs."

Jared says as he leaves the room.

"I can hear the sirens of the ambulance approaching the house."

Jared tells the 911 operator. The operator takes a sigh of relief. They know that minutes count when it comes to the appendix.

"Did the ambulance pull into your driveway?"

The operator wants to know.

"Not yet, but I can see the vehicle."

Jared tells the operator. A minute later, the ambulance pulled into the driveway.

"The Ambulance is here."

Jared wastes no time telling the operator when the vehicle pulls into the driveway. The operator is happy to hear that the vehicle arrived on the scene.

"Sounds good; I am going to let you go. They know where the patient is, so just let them come inside."

He is glad that the EMTs are finally here. The EMTs are approaching the house, pulling the gurney into the house.

"I'll show you where the patient is located."

Jared leads the way to the stairs, then they head up the stairs. Riley seems to be holding back tears as they enter the room. The EMTs walk up to Ryan and then kneel by his side.

"Can you show us where the pain is coming from?"

Ryan moans as he points to his belly button.

"Listen, we will pick you up and get you downstairs, so on three, we will lift you up. 1...2...3!"

The EMTs lift Ryan up from the ground, and with their help, he is taken downstairs on the gurney.

***

While Jared is downstairs waiting on the ambulance, Caden calls Ryan's parents.

"Caden, what's going on?"

Ryan's mom asks Caden. He looks at Ryan, and he's worried about the teen.

"Ryan is here having an appendicitis attack. We called 911 so we could get an ambulance here. We were unsure if we could get him to the hospital safely. Once I know which hospital he is going to, I'll text you."

At the mention of appendicitis, Ryan's mother grabs their keys and heads outside to the car. As she exits the house, she calls out for her husband.

"We are headed out to the car. We will wait for you to call us back before heading out."

She tells Caden.

"I'll stay on the phone for you, and when they get here, I'll ask about the hospital."

Ryan's mom speaks with his father. Pretty soon, his mom is ready to respond with an answer to Caden's question.

"Sure, we'll wait on the phone. Can we talk to him?"

Caden puts his phone on speakerphone mode.

"You can talk to him now. I put the phone on speakerphone for you."

Ryan hasn't moved much since he went to the floor.

"Ryan, I'm so sorry that you're hurting. We'll meet you at the hospital as soon as we can. We love you."

Ryan didn't respond with words, but he did grunt slightly. Things were quiet for a little bit, and then the sounds of the ambulance could be heard. It wasn't too long after that that Jared and the EMTs showed up in the room.

"Guys, do you know which hospital he's going to?"

The EMTs are getting him ready for transport by taking vitals, but one of them responds to Caden's question.

"We are taking him to St. Mark's Hospital."

Caden hopes that Ryan's parents heard the EMT's answer. Maybe, he had better check to make sure.

"Did you hear where Ryan is going to be taken too?"

There is a slight gap between Caden's question and their response.

"Yes, we did. Thank you, Caden! We are going to head out to the hospital now." Ryan's parents are headed out for the hospital. The EMTs are carefully loading Ryan up into the gurney. They carefully get him the stairs and then right out the door.

***

Everyone else is gearing up for the ride to the hospital. The EMTs are loading Ryan up into the ambulance and doing everything they need to do to get him safely to the hospital. At the same time, Riley, Caden, and Jared are all getting ready for their hospital trip. They gather whatever they think might fill their time while at the hospital, then head out to the car. Riley isn't doing well; he wants Jared to drive a bit faster. He doesn't like being away from his boyfriend. He can't talk to him, can't ease his mind, and can't remind him that he is loved. It's all Jared and Caden can do to help the teen relax. Ryan, of course, arrives first at the hospital, followed by Ryan's family, and then Jared and family come last. Caden and family meet up with Ryan's mom, who leads them to where Ryan's Dad is sitting. Jared and Caden speak with Ryan's parents to see if there have been any updates on Ryan. There really hadn't been any updates; however, the doctors and nurses wasted no time getting the teen up to surgery. They didn't want the appendix to burst. All they can do is wait to see what happens.

***

Someone comes out of the surgery doors. They call for Ryan's parents. They provide an update to the parents, and then they return to the surgery. After the update, Ryan's dad speaks with Caden and Jared. His dad tells the adults in Riley's group. Riley tried to listen in on what Ryan's dad was saying, but he couldn't hear it. Caden is filled in on what's happened, and Caden decides to tell his brother the news. It would be wrong for Caden to keep things from his brother.

"Riley, the doctors have taken Ryan up to remove his appendix from his body. They have started his surgery, and we'll continue to get updates on him."

Riley understands that his boyfriend is sick and is with the doctors. He is just his boyfriend to be okay.

"He...is okay?"

Caden's smile reassures him.

"He's sick, Riley, but the doctors are taking care of him."

Hearing his brother's words helped to comfort him. Caden and Jared are trying to help ease Riley's anxiety. Jared reads one of Riley's magazines to him, hoping it will help the teen relax. Every time a staff member enters the room, it stresses Riley out.

***

Riley is struggling at the hospital, so it's decided that Jared and Riley should go home. Riley is a bit emotional as they leave, but it's for the best. Caden sits here by himself, knowing that he's responsible for updating Jared on Ryan's condition. Jared keeps a close eye on the teen to make sure he is doing okay at home. Jared keeps him busy to keep his mind occupied. Being home also means that Smoke is around to help comfort his owner. Caden keeps updating Jared whenever there is an update to be given.

***

An hour after Riley and Jared came home, Riley was watching television when Jared got a text from Caden.

"Jared, good news, the surgery is done. Ryan came through okay. The doctors want Ryan to stay at the hospital overnight, then he'll have 2 to 4 weeks in recovery. I guess that will make Riley happy. Ryan doesn't have a room just yet, so Riley needs to wait to come to the hospital for a visit."

Jared is glad that the surgery went well. He'll update Riley here in just a second. Jared turns off the television to have Riley's full attention.

"Riley, I have some good news, buddy. Your brother texted me. Ryan is out of surgery, and he's doing okay, but he doesn't have a room yet, so we can't visit him yet. But we'll go to visit once he's in a room if he's up to it."

The news made Riley smile, and he hugged Jared.

"You...you...just made me happy,"

Riley told Jared.

"Can we tell...tell...Caden?"

Jared isn't sure what Riley wants to tell his brother, but he agrees to text Caden whatever Riley wants to tell him.

"What do you want to tell Caden?"

Jared asks Riley.

"Thank you!"

Jared quickly texts his boyfriend what Riley said, telling him that it came from the teen. Caden responds pretty quickly.

"Tell him that he is welcome."

Jared reads the text to Riley, who then gets up and goes upstairs.

"I'm coming home, Babe. There is no reason for me to be here. Ryan's parents said they would text me when he is in a room and awake and can talk. How has Riley been?"

Caden is concerned for his little brother, and he doesn't want his brother to have a ton of anxiety over this. He knows that Riley is and will always be a worry-wort. Something that causes the teen extra stress. There is nothing that can be done about that other than to try and occupy his mind with good stuff and then hope for the best. Jared is glad to have Caden coming home. It's only been an hour, but he can honestly say he's missed, Caden.

"Okay, well, I'll see you when you get here. Be safe!"

Jared sets his phone down, and then he goes upstairs to let Riley know that Caden is coming home.

"Hey Buddy, your brother is coming home. He said that Ryan's parents will text us when Ryan wakes up from surgery, so until then, we are just going to hang out at the house, okay?"

Riley just nods his head and goes back to what he was doing before Jared showed up in his room. Jared walks into the office to get some work done. With everything that has happened today, it will be nice to have a chance to relax.

***

Caden and Jared are relaxing a little bit when Riley comes downstairs. It's been about a half-hour since Caden has been home from the hospital. It could take Ryan a few hours to overcome the full effects of the anesthesia. Riley is already a little anxious, and Caden knows that until that text comes in, his brother will be going crazy wanting to be there by Ryan's side or wanting to know what is going on with him. Riley walks down the stairs and walks up to his brother and his brother's boyfriend.

"Can...I...I see Ryan?"

Caden knows his brother will not be happy with what he is about to say.

"No, Riley, we haven't heard from Ryan's parents, so until we hear from them, we will sit here at home and relax."

His brother didn't like what Caden said, just like the older brother predicted. Riley headed right back up to his room. His brother just wants Ryan's parents to call.

"Caden, do you think we'll hear from him again before the call comes in from Ryan's parents?"

Caden nods his head in response to Jared's question.

"I'm sure that we'll hear from Riley again before the call comes."

Jared chuckles. He wants the teen in the hospital to be okay, but he also wants Riley to see Ryan. Caden and Jared sit back and relax until the call tells them that it's okay to bring Riley up to see Ryan.

***

Caden answers the phone call from Ryan's parents and is now heading upstairs to get Riley, so they can leave the house and go up to the hospital.

"Hey guy, it's time to pack up and head back to the hospital. We are going to see Ryan."

Riley gets up and goes straight for the bedroom door.

"Let's go!"

Riley doesn't want to waste any time leaving his bedroom and getting out to the car. Granted, his movements are hindered a bit by his physical limitations. When they get to the hospital, they check-in at the nurses' station and head towards Ryan's room. When Riley enters the room, Ryan's face changes. He gets a little brighter.

"Ry...an, you...you...okay?"

Riley says as he enters the hospital room.

"Hey Riley, I'm feeling pretty good."

It's no wonder that Ryan is feeling good; he has painkillers helping keep the pain at bay. The teen looks at his boyfriend lying in the hospital bed and worries about him.

"I...happy for...you."

Riley is glad that his boyfriend is doing good. It beats the way he was feeling at Riley's house earlier today.

"You...you come...home soon."

Riley asks Ryan as he looks at Ryan. Ryan frowns at the question.

"Riley, I can't go home until the doctors tell me that I can ."

Now, Riley is frowning. Riley looks at his brother Jared in disbelief.

"Riley, he isn't lying to you. The doctors aren't let Ryan go home until they think that Ryan's body is ready for him to go home. You don't want him getting sick again, do you?"

Caden tells his brother a cold hard truth. The problem is that the younger brother doesn't seem to care about the cold, hard truth. All he wants is to have his boyfriend back at home.

"I'm about to get sick."

Ryan says out loud as a warning to everyone, hoping that someone will hear him and act on it. Luckily, it was time for a vitals check, so a nurse came into the room, and she helped Ryan out so he didn't vomit all over himself and the bed.

"Thank...you!"

Ryan says to the nurse. Jared hands him a glass of water.

***

Caden and Jared leave the room to speak with Ryan's parents, leaving Riley in the room with Ryan. Riley is a bit worried because he's afraid that Ryan might get sick again like he did at the house. It may be a silly fear, but it feels very real to Riley. Fear can be a weird thing for sure. Riley might be a bit fearful, but a part of him is happy too. He wants to just relax, but his nerves keep him from loosening up. Ryan is falling asleep on him. When Caden and Jared start to come into the room, Riley touches his lips to tell them to be quiet.

***

Caden and Jared pull Riley so they can go get something to eat. Riley says goodbye to his boyfriend even though he's sleeping. Riley carefully gives Ryan a peck on his hand, and then Riley heads out the door with his brother and Jared.

"Why don't we go downstairs to the cafeteria?"

Caden says to his boyfriend and his brother.

"Sounds good!"

Jared says to his boyfriend. Riley just wants to eat. Riley is glad that they waited till Ryan was asleep before leaving; that way, they wouldn't disturb them. They order their food and then sit down to enjoy it. Riley made Caden pick up an extra gelation for Riley; they have to see it is okay with the nurses. After their meal is done, they head back upstairs to Ryan's room. Before they enter the room, Riley walks up to a nurse in the hallway.

"Can...I...I share this with...with my boyfriend?"

He shows the nurse the gelatin.

"What room is your boyfriend in?"

Caden wants his brother to interact with the nurse, but Riley doesn't remember the room number.

"It's E-28."
He's been shying away from talking with anyone other than the teachers, friends, and family. The nurse gets out his tablet and looks at Ryan's charts.

"That would be fine; he will be taking his medicine soon, so it might help his stomach out a bit."

From here, they enter Ryan's room. As they enter the room, Ryan wakes up.

"Are you hun-gry? I...I...got you...gelatin. No fruit in it...make you sick again."

Riley's words may not make sense to you, but Ryan, Caden, and Jared heard the end part like this.

"No fruit in it, so you won't get sick again."

Riley hands the gelation over to Jared to open, and then Jared hands it back to Riley. Riley hands it over to Ryan along with a spoon.

"Thank you, Riley! I'm a little hungry."

Riley watches with a smile on his face. He's glad that his boyfriend likes it.

***

Caden knows his brother will be upset, but they need to head out. Before they leave, a nurse comes into the room to give Ryan his pills. Ryan takes his pill with a glass of water and frowns a bit.

"That was horrible!"

The pill didn't taste very well. He isn't complaining too much, though.

"The...the...pill bad?"

Riley asks, and that makes Ryan smile.

"Yeah, Riley, it tasted gross."

Even the nurse smiles at the exchange.

"It might taste gross, but that will help you fight off infections."

The nurse says in reaction to Riley's and Ryan's conversation. Caden knows that Jared needs to get home to get some work done. They need to head out.

"Riley, tell Ryan that we will see him later. We need to head home."

Riley gives Ryan a kiss.

"Bye Ry-an!"

Ryan wishes that they could stay longer, but it's not happening.

"Bye, guys! I love you, Riley!"

Riley gives him another kiss, and then they disappear.

"Goodbye, Ryan; take care, buddy."

Caden says as he walks out of the room.

"Bye, Ryan, see you soon!"

Ryan wishes they would stay, but there is nothing he can do about it.

"Bye Jared, bye Caden!"

Caden and Jared know that isn't easy on Ryan and Riley. At this point, the guys head out to head home.

***

Riley doesn't want to be in his room or in the house, so he heads outside with Smoke. Riley sits on the deck. He is beside himself. He wants to be with Ryan.

"Smoke...Ryan...is...sick."

Smoke looks at Riley as if he understands the pain that Riley is dealing with. Smoke looks at Riley, and it would be easy to think that he understands what Riley is saying. Who knows, maybe the dog does understand. Riley is glad to have someone to talk to, even if it's Smoke. The important thing here is that Smoke loves Riley. Until Ryan is home, Riley is going to worry about him. Smoke lays down beside Riley, resting his head on Riley's lap. They spend a half-hour outside together, and then they come back inside.

***

While Riley is outside, Ryan feels a bit lonely, so he places a call. Ryan calls Caden on his cellphone. He wants to hear how Riley is doing.

"Caden, how is Riley doing? I know he looked pretty worried when he was at the hospital earlier."

Ryan is right. Riley was worried and is worried about Ryan. It's showing too.

"He spent a half-hour outside with Smoke. I know he was talking about you with the dog."

Ryan doesn't like that Riley is worried about him. What do you do, though? How do you tell someone that loves you not to worry about you?

"I wish I was home and could come over to the house. Thanks for being there and having Smoke for him to talk to."

Ryan knows that Riley loves that dog and that the dog loves him. He's seen Smoke sit beside Riley before.

"You're welcome!"

Caden hopes Ryan will be home soon because it's hard to see Riley moping around.

"I'm going to go Caden."

Caden can hear the noises from Ryan's hospital room. It sounds like a nurse has entered the room.

"Talk to you later, Ryan."

Ryan ends the call so the doctor and the nurse can do what they need to. A little later in the day, Ryan messages Caden.

"I am being sent home early tomorrow morning. I should be home by 7:00 am. Please let Riley know for me!"

Caden text back, promising that he'll tell Riley.

***

When Riley comes back into the house, Caden sits down with him to share the news from Ryan. Caden manages to get Riley to sit down in the dining room.

"Hey Riley, I have good news."

Riley stares at his brother as he waits to hear the news.

"What-what...is the news?{"

Riley has no clue what his brother is about to tell him. He hopes it's news on his boyfriend.

"Ryan is being sent home tomorrow morning."

A smile breaks out across Riley's face.

"He is?"

Riley asks his brother. The grin on Caden's face says it all.

"I thought that would make you happy."

Riley gets up to go find Jared to share the news with him. Jared is sitting inside the office. Riley knocks at the door to announce himself.

"What's up, Riley?"

Jared can see the excitement on the teen's face.

"Ryan...home tomorrow."

The sentence may not be complete, but Jared knows what is said.

"I'm glad he's coming home tomorrow. Hey Bud, I need to get back to work."

Riley is still grinning as he turns to walk away and heads to his room.

***

Ryan wants to see Riley, but he isn't feeling all that great right now. Between the medicine and whatnot, his stomach is just killing him. Right now, he feels like he could throw up at any minute. He just isn't feeling like himself. Ryan doesn't want to be around anyone at the moment. He's feeling a little gross, and he's been a little nauseous. One way or another, he needs to make contact with his boyfriend.

***

A nurse walks in and does vitals, and as soon as she walks out of the room, he is on his phone. The phone rings, and usually, Riley answers after the 2nd ring, so he's a little worried. He can't believe that Riley didn't answer his phone call. If the guys are eating, he won't be on the phone because Caden and Jared have a rule about no screens at the table during meals. He'll catch him later on for sure. He waits 15 minutes before making one important phone call.

***

He needs to speak with Jared. Jared wastes no time in answering the phone.

"Hey Ryan, did they release you early?"

The teen laughs at the thought.

"No, I am not going home till around 7:00 am tomorrow."

Jared called the emergency number, which saved Ryan from being in the hospital longer than he's been there.

"I just wanted to thank you for calling 911. The doctor told me that my appendix might have burst if I arrived a few minutes later."

Ryan tells Jared. Jared knows that when a person has an appendix attack, it's important for the person to get into the hospital before it bursts.

"You're welcome, man!"

Jared tells Ryan, and then the call ends, and the guys go back to whatever they were doing.

***

The next day, it's around eight in the morning, and Ryan is finally home. Ryan decides to text the guys, and then he lays down for a nap.

"Love you bunches!"

He also added a few red hearts to the end of the sentence. He sent it out to all three phones so all the guys in the house would see it. All the guys liked it, but Riley loved it. Ryan doesn't want a day to go by without letting Riley know he is loved.

***

After a nap, Ryan convinces his mom that he'll be okay going to Caden's house. She lets him go, but she drives him. He has to basically sit around and not do any physical activities.

"I'm...glad you here."

Ryan can't help but give his babe a hug. The guys are sitting on the couch, and Jared is not too far away with his coloring books and colored pencils.

"I'm glad to be here too. The food stinks at the hospital."

Riley doesn't remember his hospital stay, so he doesn't remember the food. Riley is happy to have him here.

"You don't go to...hospital again!"

Riley wants his boyfriend to know that he's not too happy with him being in the hospital.

"I don't want to be in the hospital either, Dude."

Ryan tells his boyfriend. Jared quietly chuckles to himself at that exchange.

"You...want food?"

Riley wants to see if Ryan is hungry. He doesn't want him walking away and not having food in his stomach.

"Um...I already ate, but thanks, Babe."

Jared loves how Ryan is with his little brother. Talking with Ryan is one of Riley's favorite things to do. The guys talk amongst themselves. They even exchange a few kisses. The guys are enjoying their time together. Sadly, their time together has come to a close after an hour and a half, and Ryan's mom is back to pick him up. He says goodbye to everyone and even gets some licks from Smoke.
