At 16, I had a lot of things going for me, my parents both had high-paying jobs and I lived in a huge house with all the things a teenager could want or need. My parents cared for me and although they provided well for me they never spoiled me or just handed out money or gifts, I had to earn most of what I got. For instance, by doing well in sports, I got a membership to the best gym in town including weekly meetings with a personal trainer who kept me on an amazing workout routine that had me, swimming every morning followed by weight training. Now after 2 years, I was very impressed with my body as were many of my friends and others at school, 5'10" and 155 pounds of defined muscle. Another thing I had going for me was my looks, dark hair, and eyes gained me so many compliments that it now embarrassed me. I also had a tight circle of friends and although we were close, I never really felt entirely comfortable around them since all of them were straight and I was a very closeted gay teen. Outside of school, I had a part-time job delivering food for a local restaurant on my bicycle which brought me a respectable amount of money each month, as well as having several hobbies, mostly outdoors things like hiking. In general, I was a happy kid, but being an only child left me a lot of time alone after school when I wasn't working. What I did not have going for me was my school work, especially math and computer sciences, 2 courses I had to pass but had failed, twice now. Today was report card day and I almost cried looking at my grades, even with extra help I had failed both courses again and to make it worse that meant next year although I would go to grade 11 with my friends for most of my courses, twice a day I would be taking courses with the grade 9 students. If that wasn't bad enough when I got home I was going to really hear it from my parents, I had hoped to go on vacation with my friends to Florida, but there was no way they would allow that now. As I stared at my report card a friend, Mark walked up behind me and before I could put it away he saw the grades, "Damn Evan, your parents are going to freak. What is it with you and math?" The first part was very true and the second part of what he said had not been intended to be mean, Mark had always been one of my closest and nicest friends. "I don't know Mark, my brain just won't do it." "I hear ya, take care." I stood looking at my report card wishing it would change and then headed home, on the way I passed a group of kids from grade 9 and was surprised to see how much smaller they were than me and laughed thinking I was going to be the tallest grade 9 student by far. As I turned onto my street I saw one of my neighbors walking alone, he heard me and turned, smiled, and waved, "Hi, Evan." Hard as I tried I couldn't remember his name, he was younger, grade 7, maybe 8. I saw him around the neighborhood but we never spoke or hung out, I waved back, "Hi." It was lame, but without knowing his name it was the best I could think of. He slowed and soon we were walking side by side and I saw that I was easily 4, maybe 5 inches taller than him. His smile filled his face and he seemed to be happy just to be walking with me, "How was your report card, wanna see mine?" I asked to see his and saw right away that he had straight A's, then I noticed his name at the top, Jared. "Wow, pretty impressive Jared." He held out his hand to take his report card back and I accidentally handed him mine as well, before I could react he had already seen the grades. "Yours is pretty good too." He was really cool but my sadness was obvious, those two grades would ruin my summer and keep me in 2 grade 9 classes for an entire year, "No, it's not, I failed math and computer sciences for the second time, I'll have to retake those courses in grade 9 next year." "It's not that bad really." "You wouldn't understand Jared." The smile left his face momentarily but returned, "You'll be in those 2 classes with me, this will be so cool." His enthusiasm was a bit infectious but before I could respond, "I gotta run Evan my parents are expecting me, see you around." I watched as he ran home, his energy was impressive, but I had other things to think of. The talk with my parents went better than I had expected, although there would be no trip to Florida for me there were no further punishments, although they encouraged me to get a tutor or at least some help over the summer to give me a head start on next year. The next week went by quickly as all my friends headed off on vacation for the summer leaving me pretty much alone, mornings I went to the gym, but my delivery job did not start until late afternoon which left me most of the day with nothing to do. I filled as much time with video games and my favorite past-time, searching for porn, as possible, but that still left too much time. Then to make things worse my laptop crashed, this was just not my summer. I decided to head out and go for a walk, was halfway down my street when I heard, "Hey, Evan." Looking around I saw Jared running after me, as he caught up, "Hi Jared, what you up to?" "Not much, most of my friends are away so I'm heading to the mall, how about you?" "My laptop just crashed, so I'm just walking around killing time." Jared almost jumped right up, "I can fix your laptop, I do it all the time for my friends and family." Looking down at him his face showed nothing but honest enthusiasm, "You sure, it cost me a lot?" The smile never left his face, "What do you have to lose, I'm really good with computers." With no better plan, we headed back to my place and once inside up to my room. Jared looked around impressed, having not thought this through I quickly ran around collecting things that were laying around including a couple of gay magazines, one of which he may sure he noticed. "This is a really cool room, Evan." He was so happy and perky that it was infectious and I found myself feeling better as I said, "That's my laptop over there." Jared sat down at my desk and said, "Nice, this is one of the best laptops you can get, but they are twitchy." Jared's fingers typed away like a pro and quickly got into the bios, something I never did as I had no idea how to use it. About 10 minutes later Jared said, "There it is." "There what is?" "The problem, this is going to take a while." Jared relaxed in my chair and continued to type away and I left him to it, using the time to clean my room and use my phone to send some texts, then, "I really appreciate this Jared, do you want anything?" "Looking at me, a huge smile on his face, "A soda would be great, thanks." While I was down in the kitchen I got a few things done, then headed back up with 2 sodas, surprised to see Jared was not at my desk. Looking around I noticed my washroom door closed and a moment later he stepped out and thanked me for the soda, "That's a great picture of you in the washroom." I felt my face flush a bit, the picture he was talking about got taken by a friend as a joke at the pool, it was me doing a double bicep flex wearing just my speedo. "Thanks." He took a long drink of the soda and said, "You must work out a lot." My workout routine wasn't something I usually spoke about, but he was here and fixing my laptop, "Yeah, I swim almost every morning and do weights several times a week." "It shows." My face went a bit red, then the smile never leaving his face, "I fixed your laptop." I sat down at my desk and sure enough, not only had he fixed it but it was working better than when I bought it. "How did you do it, what was wrong with it?" "There was some malware and a small virus on it, I got rid of it all and installed better anti-virus protection for you." "Jared, that's really impressive, I don't know how to thank you." Now he looked a little embarrassed but recovered quickly, "Thanks, I've always been good with computers, it just comes naturally, I taught myself." Laughing I said, "Wish you could teach me, maybe I'd be able to pass computer sciences." "I noticed you have PS5, wanna play a couple of games?" "Sure." A couple led into multiple games, but as it got later I said, "I gotta get ready for work." After Jared asked I explained what I did and walked him downstairs, still smiling he said, "See you around Evan." Comments and suggestions are what keep me writing.
