Raffaele They finally reached Naples and the city welcomed them, like all the other towns, with noisy popular manifestations. Evidently the old regime was not loved so much. Somebody told the Garibaldians where the Bourbon had jailed the patriots of the first hour, and Garibaldi gave the order to go and free them. The red shirts squad went to the prison - the guards had already fled. Manfredo, with Alduzzo and Angelo, were part of the squad. They forced open the doors, took the gates off their hinges, opened the cells and broke the chains. The prisoners, often worn out, emaciated, thin, welcomed them with an overpowering joy. Manfredo was breaking open the shackles of a prisoner; the man was waiting standing up, trembling; as he was freed he threw himself on Manfredo, hugged him tightly, kissed him and started to cry. "Ah, my friend, my friend, my friend..." the man was sobbing holding tight against himself the young Garibaldian. Manfredo, somewhat astounded for so much impetuosity, somewhat happy for the man's happiness, somewhat aroused for that tight embrace and for the kisses, parted gently from him and said, "Hey, man! You are free, now." "Don't call me man. My name is Orlando. And yours?" "My name is Manfredo." "God, you are beautiful like an angel, Manfredo!" "Yes, the rescuing angel." the boy said jokingly, then said, "I have now to free the others." "Yes, let's go!" the young man said and, side by side with Manfredo, helped him in his deed. Soon they finished and swarmed out of the prison with the last of the prisoners and the other Garibaldians. The prisoners' families were waiting outside for their relations, welcoming them with noisy and festive joy. "How lucky they are! I'm a Sicilian and nobody is waiting for me." Orlando said with a wide and serene smile. "My god, the sun, how beautiful is it!" "For how long were you inside?" "Three years." "And they kept you always in chains?" "Quite always." "And didn't they let you out for air?" "No way, and they did not even offer us the sorbet on Sundays!" Orlando ironically said. "You are Sicilian, you said, aren't you?" "Yes, from Caltanissetta." "And why did they condemn you?" "Because we got tired of the Bourbons and so... One day we revolted and fought. I was one of the leaders, thus at the process I had a heavy sentence - thirty years, and this because I killed nobody or it would have been a death sentence. But it had been just a chance, I would have killed all of them, I swear, it is as true as is true God! And I yelled this, when they read me the decision. So I faced another process for offences to the court and they added ten more years..." Manfredo was listening, smiling for the young man's impetuosity and meanwhile he was watching him - he was fascinating, had a lively gaze, penetrating eyes; he was virile, slender, a little emaciated from his long detention, but indomitable. "What will you do, now?" "Who knows? I didn't have time to think about that. First, I want to get drunk. Then I want to have a good bath and look for decent clothes. Then I will think about what to do." "What were you doing in Caltanissetta?" "A wine-maker, but in Marsala, not in Caltanissetta; at each season I went to work there, also if all my family lives in Caltanisetta." "Do you have a wife, and children?" "Not on my life! I was still living with my parents." "Did you have a fiancˇe?" "Picciotto, females don't make me horny! I don't like women!" Orlando declared merrily and aloud. "You don't either?" Manfredo asked with wide eyes, happy for that so clear and simple admission. Orlando looked at him, understood the meaning of that question and said, staring at him with a penetrating look and a coaxing smile in his eyes, "But you do make me horny, especially after three years long fast! And to think that when I was a free man I could have a boy each night! But you are more beautiful than the sun!" "Three years..." Manfredo echoed thoughtfully, feeling an agreeable shudder all over his body, and said, "So then... why instead of going to get drunk... you don't came with me, now?" "You want me?" the man asked, his eyes shining. "And you? Do you want me?" "I would do you here! You are so beautiful!" "Let's go, then." "Yes, where?" "We will find a place." "I would like to take a bath, before... I stink like a goat." Manfredo, asking around, found a pension, paid for a room and they went upstairs. Orlando went to bathe himself, shaved carefully then reached the boy in the room. He undressed in haste, while Manfredo, already naked on the bed, and was looking with an anticipation quiver at the big, nice and hard tool of his new friend. Orlando, while undressing, was looking pleased at Manfredo's naked body. Then he climbed the tall and wide bed where the boy welcomed him with a pleasurable moan. Orlando was really starving for sex and Manfredo was more than happy to be able to... appease his hunger! They surfaced again to the world almost three days later, without even taking their meals, totally infatuated with each other and swearing they would never split up. In fact Orlando was ready to follow him at the ends of the world, and Manfredo was happy with that, because in the man, besides the unrestrained sexuality and the impetuousness he so much appreciated, he found what since a long while he was looking for, possibly without even being aware of it - a sense of safety, of firmness, of calm, an indestructible resolution, a ready intelligence, united to a cheerfulness and a joy of living that were contagious. Meanwhile Garibaldi had installed himself in Naples, and the Bourbon king was in flight - he took the sea route. But also Gaeta fortress at last fell, after a last, useless resistance. All the former kingdom of the Two Sicilies was in the hands of the conqueror. From Naples, General Garibaldi sent to all the governors in the provincial capitals a printed pattern of the voting paper for the referendum that had to be held in order to decide the destiny of the newly freed country. Angelo formed a couple with another Garibaldian, a boy from Cremona, Pier Maria Guarnieri, and was finally serene, or rather happy. The two youths loved each other with a strong, even though peaceful and romantic, love. Angelo went to tell that to Enrico, thanking him with his whole heart. Enrico, on the contrary, was still alone. In Naples he became friends with a young Neapolitan, Raffaele Barra, the son of a chemist. He met him when he went to ask for some drugs and the youth was at the counter and served him. The two young men felt each other likeable and started to meet often. Quite soon they understood they both were men's lovers, and when they mutually opened their hearts, they became aware to be strongly attracted towards each other. Raffaele narrated to his new friend how he was coming out from a bad story - the man who had been his lover, and that he believed to be the owner of a pension, in reality ran a boy's brothel. The man first lured them in the "bassi" that is Naples slums, and amused him fucking them, and afterwards he exploited them putting the boys at disposal of the rich men of the town in the rooms of his pension. Raffaele, discovering this, was deeply sickened and split off with the man whom he had believed to love. Then Enrico told him about himself and about his story with Maurizio. "That's the reason why you have that mourning band?" "Precisely." "You have been unlucky, my friend, really luckless." "A little. Anyhow I also had luck. I had had sweet beloved one and several sincere friends." "Less than what you deserve." Raffaele said and lightly brushed with a tender and affectionate gesture his hand. Enrico, acting on impulse, seized that hand, took it at his lips and kissed it. Raffaele then encircled his shoulders, pulled him against himself and kissed him on his lips. Enrico quivering abandoned himself to that tender and passionate kiss. But then he shook from his bliss and parted from him, "Raffaele, I like you very much, but..." "I know. Your grief is too fresh and you don't yet feel ready. But I will wait for you..." "And if I never were ready?" Enrico asked with emotion. "I hope to be able to wait long enough." the young man answered him sweetly. "Also Maurizio was waiting to feel ready, but he didn't have enough time. He asked me to forgive him for that... on his death bed." Enrico murmured. "But you have been able to wait, haven't you?" "And for what, to close his eyes? No, Raffaele, I... I think I have not to take that same risk... I believe that possibly... I have to possibly say you yes, now, straight away..." Enrico said hesitantly, and then added, "I like you very much." "No, this could be a risk - let us know better each other, before. Because I would like having something serious and sound, with you." "Oh, that's the same for me!" "Let's just be close friends, for now." "But you... I have perhaps the need to be hugged by you, to feel your warmth, your affection..." "You will not be missing any of that, be sure." "But we Garibaldians, in a while, would have to continue our way up to north, to free also Rome." "I will follow you." "You really would do that?" "This I would do without any hesitation." "How much do you love me, then? Would you leave everything for me, in spite of the fact that I haven't still said my yes to you?" "I can't help it, I love you. And as long as it is not you to say to me a no, I cannot but be hoping that one day you can accept my love." Enrico was terribly torn. But the departure day for Rome didn't came - the king Vittorio Emanuele, who had assumed the title of "King of Italy", went south with his army to stop Garibaldi - in fact it was not yet the time to take Rome, the French would intervene to protect the Pope and the Piedmontese army was not strong enough to face a confrontation with the French one, and possibly also of other nations, that would have taken profit of that to weakens his rising star. The king asked the Pope the authorization to pass through the Holy See lands with his army in order to reach and stop his general. As the authorization was denied, the king invaded the Marche region and reached the former kingdom of the Two Sicilies. At the Volturno River, Garibaldi met the king and handed him over all the freed lands that meanwhile had voted unanimously for the annexation to the newly born Kingdom of Italy. Then, on the king's order, he dissolved his contingent of Garibaldian volunteers. Angelo, with his Pier Maria, asked and obtained, as several other Garibaldians, to be enlisted in the army of king Vittorio Emanuele, the new Italian army. Manfredo, on the contrary, decided to go south with his Orlando with whom he was deeply in love - he loved the southern territories, as they were warm, filled with light and sun like his man. They couldn't go where Orlando was known - in Caltanissetta and in Marsala they could not live together as they decided to do. But they would look for a place and a job somewhere in the south, in a big town where they would be just two anonymous foreigners. Therefore, after they said farewell to all their friends, they left with happiness for the south. Enrico felt betrayed - Italy was not yet one single land, Lazio and Rome were still missing, and Rome had to be the capital of the new state! Also wide parts of the Triveneto, up north-east below the Alps, were still missing. Even though Italy now existed and spread from the Alps to the Jonian Sea, the work was not yet finished. He felt betrayed and disappointed. Not by Garibaldi nor by the king... but by the politicians who were around the king. The politicians, that brood, always ruined everything. Anyway, with others who were disappointed like him, when they had to separate, they promised to each other to stay in contact, ready to answer if one day, as Garibaldi hinted to them and they hoped he would call them again to accomplish what they had started. Therefore Enrico decided not to enlist in the king's army. Raffaele told him, "Why then don't you stop here with me?" "To do what?" "To be a physician, what else, and to stay with me." "I would stop here if..." "If?" "If you accept to be my lover." "You are sure you want it? Do you feel ready?" "No, I don't really feel ready. But in these days I thought about it very much, and got the conclusion it would be a mistake to wait until I feel ready. And, moreover, I know you will help and sustain me. And anyway I know I am in love with you, and I need your love." "You need my love... you could not say more beautiful words to me. I too need your love. Will you come to live at my place?" "There will be no problems?" "No. My father knows about me, even though we never talked openly of it. He would not consider weird if we set up house together, indeed; I believe he would even give me a helping hand." "And the others who will be around us, your relatives, or your friends, what will they think?" "Here in our land we say - live and let live. Naples has a long history of male-love it is part of our culture, as I had the occasion to explain you." "But I... I am not a sissy... a 'femminiello' as you say here, and you neither." "No, thank goodness. Therefore we would not need to do the litter ceremony that is the 'figliata'. We don't need it." Raffaele said with a cunning smile. "Don't you embrace me?" Enrico asked, full of desire. "Sure, come here..." Raffaele answered opening his arms and welcoming him. "Undress me..." "And you me..." Both naked, they remained one step apart to contemplate each other - it was the first time they saw the nakedness of his friend, the first time they could admire it. Enrico thought that his friend was manly, beautiful, desirable, arousing. Then he raised his hands to brush lightly Rafaele's chest and their bodies came closer, and closer, until they embraced and hugged. They kissed and their caresses became more and more intimate. Enrico loved feeling Raffaele's hands on his body, these hot hands exploring carefully his forms, as if they wanted to carve them in his memory. He liked feeling him flutter under his caresses, emitting light pleasure moans, pressing against him, pulling him against his body, making him feel the intensity of his desire that could at last express itself, and blossom fully. Yes, he loved Raffaele and felt the need to tell him so in a better way than just with words. No, he was not betraying the memory of his Maurizio, that remained warm, unspoiled inside his heart. A little while before he told he didn't still feel yet ready, but now he thought that he had been wrong. He was ready, eager to welcome him inside himself, and to enter into him, eager to quench his thirst for him and to quench Raffaele's thirst, to warm himself with him and to warm him with his love. "I want you!" he whispered and also for him it was not clear if these words were more a request or an invocation, if what he was trying to express was "I want to take you" or "I want you inside me" because it was at the same time the first and the latter, so blended to be indistinguishable. And he felt grateful that his friend didn't ask him for an explanation he was not able to give. But a deeper gratitude was in him - the pleasing surprise of the one who feels to be intensely loved and almost with amazement asks himself - "Why me, and by such a splendid, unique person, I, being so inadequate, so imperfect, when the world is full of people lot more desirable than me? Will I be able to give him all he needs?" The sweet eagerness with which Rafaele was caressing, kissing, hugging him, with which he rummaged him and let him fumble, with which he was pushing on him his turgid desire, were overwhelming him. From somewhere, far away, carried by a warm wind, came a soft and festive chiming and Enrico thought that all the bells of the town had to peal to celebrate what Raffaele and he were doing - they were exchanging love. Raffaele had been able to arouse with tender and high-handedness his soothed senses and made them sing, like a great pianist drawing a heavenly harmony from an old, neglected pianola. Their limbs moved until, like in a puzzle, each tessera found his place, connecting, finding the right tessera with which to unite and the whole that was till a little before apparently confused, as if by magic becomes a unique, right, beautiful drawing. Just so, at last Raffaele was in him, the last tessera was at the right place, they were now a unique thing. Almost in unison they emitted an only, long moaning, they felt an only pleasure where there were not one giving and one taking, because it was the same thing at once. "I'm you..." Raffaele whispered expressing with these tree words the same thoughts, while with a sweet rhythm he was taking him. At each push his forelock fluttered on the tall forehead, his smile gradually became wider and more sensual, "You are beautiful..." Raffaele murmured holding him against his body and pushing himself deeper, with virile passion, and he lowered to kiss him. Raffaele was inside him, around him, everywhere. "Yes, we are a unique thing," Enrico thought quivering with joy and pleasure, pressing against his man, following his movements with all his body. "Here I am... Enrico..." the beloved one gasping and shuddering with joy gave out inside him the proof of his pleasure. Then, after a short throbbing rest, almost without a break, keeping him in a hug, rolling on his back, he brought him on top and offered himself to his lover, beseeching, "Come..." and all resumed as before. If now was Enrico dancing on top of him, sliding inside him in his merry back and forth, nothing changed, because they just were a unique thing. Perfectly connected, and so perfect together, Enrico thought with grateful emotion. "You are beautiful..." Raffaele whispered while holding him against his body and pushing himself inside him with virile passion and went down to kiss him. "I love you." Enrico said glad and the light that answered him inside the eyes of his beloved, made him rejoice. When at last, after remaining languidly embraced to give time to their hearts to calm down, they got up; holding their hands and still admiring each other they enjoyed with their eyes and their souls the nakedness they mutually just savored. "I was ready, did you see?" Enrico asked with a cheerful pleasure. "Yes, and now we belong to each other." Raffaele answered him, squeezing the hand he was holding in his own, almost to underline his words. ----------------------------- CONTINUES IN CHAPTER 14 ----------------------------- In my home page I've put some more of my stories.
