Chapter Five

I slept fitfully through the night and finally gave up on sleep when the first light of dawn started peeking through the windows. I threw on my clothes and exited the hotel; looking for a place to get some breakfast. I wasn't really hungry, but I reckoned cup of coffee might help clear my head. With every step I took I could feel my bruised lower body. I finally stumbled on a café and ordered breakfast. I sipped the black coffee and just picked at the pancakes as last night kept running through my head. Toward the end, did it actually start to feel good, or is this just some notion my mind came up with in its attempt to cope? The part of town my hotel was in was, unintentionally, on the other side of town from Karl Mason; at least I'd inadvertently gotten one thing right.

I wondered around town just walking aimlessly and wrapped in my thoughts. Around 1pm I stopped in another café and had lunch before heading back to the hotel. As I entered the lobby, the desk clerk said that a man had come and he told him I was out. The man left a message at the desk. My hand was a little shaky as I took the note. Had Red followed me here? I thanked the clerk and walked toward the grand staircase toward my room. On the landing, I opened the note and read:

Sam, I'm here in town but they said you was out. I'll come back later on, probably around 3 or 4. - Davy.

I glanced at the big grandfather clock on the landing – 2:20. I went back downstairs and let the desk clerk know that the young man who left the note was my assistant and occupant of the other bed in my room, and that he should direct him to me when he showed back up.

"Yes, sir. What about the other gentleman who was here inquiring about you?" he asked, "should I show him up as well?"

"What did this other gentleman look like?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

"He was a tall fellow, dark red or auburn colored hair. Dressed like a high society gent, but his clothing was all wrinkled" he said, "and he smelled of vomit."

"No, son" I said, "if that man comes back `round, tell him I checked out and left. That one is trouble."

"Yes, sir" he said, returning to his duties.

How the hell would I be able to avoid him for three days? What started out as a fun trip turned into misery.

I had just laid back on the bed for an afternoon nap when I heard the key turn in the lock. I pretended to be asleep. It was Davy, and when he saw me he was very quiet; trying not to wake me. He eased himself whisper softly beside me and before I knew it I was actually asleep.

For once, when I woke up I did not have an erection, even though I found myself pressed against Davy's back with my right arm draped across his chest. When he felt me moving, he turned onto his back and that's when I noticed the bruising. He looked as if somebody had blacked both his eyes and I could see what appeared to be finger marks around his throat leading into his hairline. I ran my hand down his chest and as it skimmed across his ribs I watched a grimace come across his face.

"What happened to you?" I whispered.

"I could ask the same of you?...why were you here a full day early?" he whispered back.

I just looked down at my shoes. I didn't want to talk about my ordeal and clearly, he didn't care to discuss his either. I got up and made my way to the bathroom down the hall to relieve my bladder. He came in seconds after me and stood at the urinal next to me. When he pulled out his penis, I could see that the bruising continued; the skin was a purple hue around the base and from the little I could see it looked like his scrotum was swelled. I could feel the heat rising in my face as my anger swelled to a boiling point. I started to question him again, but he interrupted me before I could get the words out; calmly saying "Just leave it be." I wanted to object, but I realized how hypocritical that would be since I wasn't even sure if I wanted to tell him about what happened to me.

"Let's go find some supper, then" I told him.

As it turned out, the hotel actually had a restaurant on the lobby level. We had a simple meal and bought a bottle of wine to share when we got back to our room. We had a very small balcony, just large enough for two chairs, but we made do. We sipped the wine in silence and watched at the sun set. Close to the end of the bottle, Davy began to make simpering noises. I reached over and laid my hand on his forearm.

"I hate my father, and my brothers" he said soft and haltingly, "the only time I'll ever go back there again is to see them buried. I wish I'd just gone with you to visit Karl." I guess my plan was pretty obvious in hindsight.

"No, it's good you weren't around that bastard either" I snapped. He gave me a sympathetic, if somewhat confused look.

"I almost wish we'd never taken our time off, no good has come of it" he said. I just nodded my agreement.

It was getting late. We went and closed the balcony doors. Davy took the time to mess up the covers on the second bed so it would look used, then we disrobed and went to bed. Neither of us was in the mood for sex; we just fell into a similar position as when I woke up earlier. With his shirt off I could see his whole torso covered in angry purple bruises. From the tenderness, he may have had some cracked ribs. He looked me over as well and noted the bruises I had that looked suspiciously like hand grips on my hips, but he said nothing. We settled into each other and for the first time in days I felt at peace.

In the morning, I left Davy in bed and made straight for the Coast Guard office. I inquired if there were any openings at some other lighthouse; something needing both a keeper and an assistant. I planned to get me and Davy away from this place. Capt. McConnell said he would send a telegram to headquarters and let me know when he found something out. I headed back to the hotel and when I entered the room, Davy was still in bed. I walked over and shook Davy gently to tell him it was time to get up for breakfast. After he got dressed, we went down the street to a small café I noticed during my travels earlier.

The next two days went by quickly. I was still trying to stay out of sight for the most part since I'd told the hotel staff to say I'd checked out. Saturday morning it was time to go back to work. We checked out of the hotel and hired a carriage to take us to the dock. Dooley would be meeting us at 10am to shuttle us back and pick up our relief. I was feeling apprehensive that Red might try to catch up to me here so I'd stopped and bought a big hunting knife and had it tucked inside my waistband covered by my jacket. We sat on a bench and waited for Dooley; it was 9:30, we got there early. I was watching a seagull pick at a dead fish at the water's edge when Davy tapped me saying "Here comes Karl." I stood and turned and shouted "Stay where you are, don't come any closer!" But he continued our way telling me "I just need to talk to you..."

"No, you gave up that privilege!" I shouted, pulling the knife out and pointing at him with a shaking hand. That stopped him in his tracks. He started backing up.

"Fine. I'll leave, but you'll never know why it happened" he said, backing away.

"I already know why it happened you rotten son of a bitch" I growled.

Davy looked at me fearfully, as if I'd lost my mind. I came back to the present and saw that several people were looking at me holding the knife, so I put it away and resumed my seat. Davy gave me a questioning look; I turned away.

"Like I told you, you're not the only one who had a bad week" I said to Davy.

A few minutes later Dooley arrived. We helped him get his boat ready and stowed our gear then untied and pushed off. Our replacements were waiting on the landing, raring to go after only a week.

"At least you two will be more comfortable, now that there's two beds" one said. I just gave him a blank stare and shook his hand as he boarded the boat to go shoreward. His partner was less hurried to leave.

"I kind of envy you" he said, "the solitude, the view. I'll be happy to be your relief any time."

"You may have an opportunity to work here soon" I whispered to him.

Davy and I shook his hand as well. He got on the boat and Dooley set out for the shore. We tied off our duffels to the hoist and climbed the ladder to the deck to hoist them up. I took the knife and put it on the nightstand by the bed, then went and got the lard out of my hiding place. Hopefully, we'd have more use for the lard than the knife this week.

A week went by with closeness between us but no intimacy as we waited for our wounds to heal. Davy's bruises had gone from purple to brown and now the peculiar yellowish color they get just before healing. As for me, I was physically back to normal for the most part but I couldn't shake the anger. As we lay in bed Sunday, on our eighth day back, I looked Davy over in the morning sun.

"Your bruises are nearly gone now" I said.

"Yours too" he said, "I looked while you were sleeping."

"How did you know?" I asked.

"I didn't really know, just suspected as much" he replied, "it can be very nice if you're prepared...and...with the right person. With a `bastard', as you called him, it can be excruciating. Trapped in a bedroom by four bastards like him, you get what you saw when I returned from the farm."

I had no words. I just ran my hand down his body feeling his ribs, the dip from his ribcage to his hip and the fleshy roundness of his ass. There was no flinching this time. I turned his head to me and kissed him gently, and released him. He turned toward me and I could see that his bruised genitals were reacting to my touch and kiss.

"Good to see that despite the black and blue, your equipment seems to still be in good working order" I joked.

"How about yours? I hope you won't let your anger with that cretin ruin our relationship" he said, with genuine concern in his voice.

I just smiled and pulled his hand onto my stiffening rod.
