He stirred awake, needed to pee, jabbed Bill "wake up bud" then dialed the guys in 102 to wake them. It was 4:30, Tia would be making coffee and her breakfast tacos for them. The 101 phone rang, Bryan answered. Jim and Ed wanted to be along on the hunt, their bag limit met, and suggested a solution; they could drive the guys' F-150 to the cabin, get their Jeep and follow Bryan. When Bryan heard their request, he nodded approval at the phone and asked Bill if Jim and Ed's idea was good? Bill agreed, washed his face, brushed his teeth and was getting dressed when his own cell went off. Mitch reported that when he'd gone out earlier for ice, "the occupant upstairs in 202 was on the balcony smoking and when he saw me headed to the ice machine, asked if I was in 102? When I nodded yes, he grinned, groped his crotch and nodded to come upstairs". Mitch went on to add that "he wasn't about to turn the burly stud down and climbed the stairs before going for ice. The guy was a railroad lineman named Granger, in town with his crew, replacing some track siding outside of town and could use some action. Mitch added they were down hunting and were headed out soon so didn't have much time". Granger hauled out his dick as they went in the room, Mitch dropped to his knees, worked the thick hairy shaft down his throat and gobbled it good til the guy got off. "Maybe later you can swing on it again; we get done about 6" Granger added as he dress for work. Mitch came back to finish getting ice and felt the warmth he'd just guzzled stirring his guts. Bill was laughing out loud and went on to share with Bryan. It was 5 on the dot when the guys began loading their gear in the F-250. Bryan's hunting guide's instinct had kicked in. He suggested they not go back to Higgins Ranch but go to Buster's farm instead. He just had a feeling there that brought the hair up on the back of his neck. All agreed to follow his lead. Bryan phoned Jared to request a change of plans and conduct the hunt at their farm vs the Higgins Ranch and got an ok from Buster. Bryan then called Mr. Higgins to update him on their hunt plan change. Bill tossed his truck keys to Jim so they could use it to get back to the cabin where they'd haul out the Jeep and follow the gang to the farm. First things first though, they pulled in right at 5:30 for Tia's fat breakfast tacos and big mugs of hot coffee. "We'll be back for chow later, Tia" Bryan yelled as he waved goodbye. He didn't see either nephews' trucks. The pair of trucks headed out the county road to the cut-off and the cabin. As they crept down the gravel path the sun barely tinged light in the distance and the cool air from the system that blew in overnight left a freshness all around. After loading their gear to the Jeep, Jim and Ed followed Bryan and guys back to the county road and up to the farmer's gate, then called Jared who appeared in his ATV again. He shook hands with Bryan, recalled Jim and Ed from yesterday and met Uncle Bill, Mitch and Mike then all vehicles made their way down to the farmhouse. Jared's mom met and greeted the guys with offers of coffee and Buster slowly made his way onto the front porch as a courtesy, but couldn't remain standing there long. Jared led Jim and Ed to the barn and got out 3 more ATVs since each one could seat 2 guys with one extra for gear and blind supplies from Bryan's truck to haul out to a tank and windmill. Jared's mom remarked that her two dogs were barking all night long and at first she "thought it was from the winds or hogs, but then got to wondering if it was that cougar about"? She didn't hear any hog noises at all overnight. Bryan's cell went off. It was Mr. Higgins from the ranch they'd hunted yesterday. He said he'd heard from Carl Morgan, that one of their young heifers was killed overnight and thought it looked like a big predator, the hindquarters were almost gone and there were big bite marks in the skull. Bryan's first instinct was to abandon the farm action and head to the Morgan's place; then it occurred to him that the "waller" being used by the hogs, was a bend in the stream that led to the Morgan's main gate and perhaps the cougar was closer than imagined; and further, the reason the cat was nearby was the well concealed cover and prime hog prey was the perfect locale for a ready source of food and protection. Buster and his family were definitely in danger. Perhaps after the shoot yesterday, the remaining hogs had disbursed, the cat needed a fresh kill, Jared's mom's dogs were pestering the cougar last night, so he followed the stream to the Morgan ranch and that young heifer was supper. Bryan was stunned back to the present with Mr. Higgins hollering his name in the cell and Bryan apologized for the dazed thoughts, then both hung up. Bryan phoned Jeff, reported where he was and all he learned in the last 20 minutes, then added "we're good from last night right" and went on to play out his cougar/heifer scenario which Jeff completely supported; before adding "I'm headed to the Morgans then to the farm and yep bro we're good" then both hung up. The others stood mesmerized at Bryan, his reasoning, planning and the entire process that led to his conclusion. He then directed the others get the blind supplies down to the windmill area and get it set up. He reminded them again, "BE ALERT, BE LOADED AND READY TO SHOOT". He asked Jared if they could ride together, then he stepped into the farmhouse and reminded Buster, his wife and two kids to remain inside with the dogs and asked if he had a shotgun. Buster's wife reached for it and started to hand it over to Bryan and he pushed back, and cautioned "yall may need to use this in here if that cat gets passed us and comes this way or is wounded and comes this way, blast away with both barrels at once and Buster, I don't think you need to be trying to take on this action, let your wife here do the do, your balance isn't steady". He went on to add, "by my and Jeff's calculations this guy is big, about 8-9' long nose to tail tip and may weigh in the 180# range" and with that he joined Jared and headed down to the windmill setup. Mom secured the door as they left. By the time Jared and Bryan arrived at the stock tank, the others had pretty much unloaded the supplies and began setting up the two blinds. Bryan revised his VM greeting, that said he was occupied and for any caller to leave a message. Bryan sent Jared up the windmill with vision goggles and rigged the rifle up a tie to the eager freshman/stand-in young stud family man. He would be a back-up kill if things got bad, and from his view up high, he'd get a clearer view as daylight filled the farm plot and "waller". Jim and Ed realized this was Bill, Mitch and Mike's circus but if they had to take down the cat they would. Bryan then instructed Bill and his boys to "be on point, watch his every move and direction and don't venture off alone for ANY reason". Bryan then climbed the windmill and remained about 2 feet beneath Jared as the long watch and wait began. There was birdsong and some rustling of trees then it grew quiet. Not a hog was heard. A hawk squawked as it left the "waller", Bryan's eyes and ears perked alert. The guys watched his every move. Ed's dick throbbed hard with the tension and the intensity of Bryan's natural leadership. Another hawk squawked from the "waller" and sped directly to the silent windmill and pair of men clinging to it. Bryan now wore his own set of binocular glasses, which freed both hands. He was strapped to the windmill frame for bracing. The air was still cool, the wind still, the sun bright already as Bryan and Jared scanned the "waller" and surrounding areas for movement or any signs of the cat. The family dogs began barking and Bryan wondered if he'd miscalculated the cat's intent? Was he in the right place? Would the cat go after the family and dogs? Had the cat been stalking them? So many thoughts filled his mind and he squinted back into focus and once again scanned toward the house before following a line from the near side of the house to a faucet and water hose that led to a potting shed about 20' feet behind the house. Instinct took control, Bryan raised his rifle to aim and gently scan the house-to-shed line again. The guys in the blinds saw nothing except their sexy hunk of a guide aiming at the house above them from the windmill, at something. "Jared you there" Bryan whispered low, "yes" came the young tense reply, "you see him, watch the potting shed", Jared gritted his teeth and said "trying to focus". The dogs were howling now, the only sound for miles. Nothing in sight, no sign of a cat or hog, a bird or hawk.....tension mounted then blast Blast BLAST BLAST and it was over. Jared had fired then Bryan then Jared again and lastly Bryan. The two men scrambled down the windmill and all jumped in the ATVs making like all hell for the potting shed. Buster and his family remained inside, the dogs had stopped barking and were whimpering, as the guys arrived at the house. The big male had one kill shot in the skull, that likely was the last one from Bryan. He'd been hit in the left leg, then the lower abdomen, the throat and the skull. It was not a good day to kill, Bryan thought, and especially this beautiful big boy. He also regretted not being able to take him out with a single kill shot, so that he had no suffering, but today that was not to be. Jared ran inside to get his family and helped his dad out to the waiting ATV and to the potting shed and the big cat. Bryan instructed them to leave the cat alone and he needed pics and a call to Jeff who likely will want to get here next. Before Bryan could finish his instructions, the big Texas Truck horn was blaring at the farm gate for entry. Bryan turned his cell on, called Jeff, with the gate code and in no time the big truck and handsome Game Warden were at the scene. Jeff relayed that "I tried your cell got the greeting and headed directly to the farm from the Morgan place". They all took pics, Jeff hauled out his tape and took measurements of overall length measured standing height at the shoulder, width and length of the skull, size of canines and would take the cat back to Meadows for weight. Jeff saw the anguish in Bryan's eyes and knew that the 4 shots to kill were troubling, they would be for any professional. Bryan remarked "that drop off to the shed from the house was an unknown and the cat covered those angles in a matter of seconds and was just coming up from the throat shot when he had a clear skull shot". Bryan continued shaking his head, conflicted. Bill, Mitch, Mike, Jim and Ed all remained in the background and quiet. It was Jared's mom who brought clarity as she hugged Bryan and Jared both, thanked them humbly, "for saving my family" wiped away tears and returned to her husband, then shepherded her youngest son and daughter with Buster to the house. The silence was broken by a hawk and then the 7 guys loaded the cat solemnly into the back of Jeff's truck. They followed in the F-250 and Jeep arriving at Meadows' slaughter house about 45 minutes later. Time was a misty being that Bryan reflected on as he checked the cell phone clock. It was just 10:00. Their breakfast had not even settled well. They pulled into Meadows', young Steve and Tom along with dad Burt and other two sons Jack and Josh came to see the big cat. Almost reverently, they eased the body from the truck bed, and took it to the scales, 184#s. Burt looked into Bryan's eyes and gripped his shoulders in support, then shook his hand and thanked him "for this brave action". Burt knew the anguish of a big kill, first hand and had shared a similar event with Bryan many years ago. Both men blinked an understanding. Jeff phoned a taxidermist and asked if he did any reconstruction body work, and that they had a big cat that needed to be honored, provided the details and dimensions and made arrangements for transport by the taxidermist. While Mr. Mills, the taxidermist, reserved any schedule or production date, he did give a general window of 2-3 months based on their current backlog. Bryan had asked the farmer family for a release, and gift to a local community college or museum, based on the Game Warden's suggestion; to which they agreed. Mr. Mills indicated he could have a truck there the next day if the Meadows could refrigerate the animal; and Mr. Meadows nodded affirmatively to Jeff and all was settled. Jeff had only pro forma documentation to complete on his own at that point and would have it ready for Buster, Bill, Bryan, Burt Meadows and Mr. Mills' signatures as chain of custody for the State and any future designee, agency or recipient.
