By Randy Howard Chapter Four Previously in chapter three: "He's going to kill the boy," a worried Hunter gasped. "Police!" Hunter yelled, causing the man to jump, he plunged the knife into Nathan and shoved the boy away from him. The man quickly pulled up his pants and took off running, leaving Nathan spread out on the ground, blood issuing from the hole that the knife had made. Hunter knelt beside the boy, his hand pressing on the wound, and he could hear someone running toward him. He turned defensively toward the sound and saw Evan running toward him. "Evan quick, in my truck under the seat is a police radio, quickly go get it," Hunter ordered. Evan ran off quickly to retrieve the radio, while Hunter kept the pressure on Nathan's wound. Nathan began to come to, although disoriented; he quickly regained his presence of mind. "Oh God it hurts mister... please don't stab me no more, I don't wanna die," Nathan begged, thinking that Hunter was the man that had stabbed him. "Lay still Nathan, I've got help on the way," he said, his voice was soft and soothing. "I'm a police officer and that man that did this is gone. Now lay still until an ambulance gets here," he said comforting that boy, but he could feel the fear welling up inside the boy. "Please don't let me die," Nathan cried. "I'm just fourteen and I don't wanna die," he added. "I'm not going to let you die son, but I do need you to lay still. You've lost a lot of blood, so moving is only going to cause you to lose more." "Oh God it hurts... it really fucking hurts," Nathan cried. "Where the fuck is Evan," Hunter asked himself quietly, knowing that the boy should have returned by now. He was watching for Evan and trying to keep Nathan's bleeding to a minimum, when he saw his truck coming toward him. The headlights were on high and the truck showed no sign of stopping, Hunter grabbed Nathan, "aaaaggghhh," the boy screamed from the pain, as they rolled out of the path of the truck. Hunter looked at his truck and he could see the frightened face of Evan, duck tape over his mouth, and his eyes filled with fear and peering out the window at him. "Evan... oh God no," Hunter screamed, watching his life, his lover, his son, speed away with the man that had just wounded Nathan. Now chapter four: Hunter's heart nearly stopped, his lungs refused to breathe as he watched his truck drive away with Evan and that mad man inside it. He knew that he had to keep pressure on the worse of the knife wounds to keep the blood loss to Nathan at a minimum. But he was torn emotionally, mentally, between saving Nathan and saving Evan. Evan had already lived with a monster that nearly destroyed his young life, and now he was in the hands of another that wanted to end his life. Hunter could hear the distant sound of sirens; evidently Evan was able to radio for help before the monster got him. Headlights, sirens and shouting voices converged on Hunter, "Hunter, what the fuck is going on here," his partner Mike asked. "The monster that has been killing all those boys has Evan," he told his partner, now wondering why he was there. "What are you doing here Mike?" he questioned. "Jerry called me and asked me to take his shift," he said. "His wife went into labor and he called me from the hospital," the ambulance pulled up and Mike got up waving them over to him. "The question is, just what were you and Evan doing here at this hour," Mike asked, not sure that he wanted to hear the answer. "What have we got," a paramedic asked, ending the conversation between Mike and Hunter. "The boy has been stabbed several times and this is the worse of the wounds," Hunter told him, reluctant to move his hands. The paramedic replaced Hunter's hands with his own, freeing Hunter to leave. Hunter grabbed Mike, pulling him quickly toward his squad car. "Let's go Mike, I gotta find Evan," Hunter said, getting in the passenger side, unable to drive because of his mental condition. "How the hell are we going to find him Hunter, they've had quite a lead on us," Mike said pulling away from the scene, leaving the other officers to handle the scene. "He's got my truck Mike, and with that metallic green color, it should be quite easy to spot," he said. Mike got on the radio, giving the description of Hunter's truck to other patrolmen, hoping to locate the truck. As Mike exited the park, something caught his attention over to the side. It was barely noticeable, but there was no mistaking it, it was his truck and it was hiding in the shadows of bushes. "Mike... over there... that's my truck," Hunter said, surprised that the killer had not gone too far, but had taken Evan to a street that abutted the park. Mike pulled the cruiser to the side of the road, just beyond the view of the truck. Even before it had completely stopped, Hunter was out and running. "Call for backup Mike," he yelled over his shoulder, not bothering to slow down, but hurrying toward where he thought Evan to be. *** Stealthily, keeping to the shadows, Hunter worked his way closer toward his truck. He could see from his vantage point, that the truck was abandoned and the driver's door left open. He crept closer, his eyes darting left and right as he moved across the dew covered grass on his belly, looking for signs of Evan. His heart nearly stopped when he heard Evan's whimpering, coming from somewhere within the woods. He got up, crouching, moving quickly and at times his movements seemed invisible. He ducked behind the cover of the open door and reached under the seat for the gun that he kept hidden there, just for emergencies. He grabbed the gun and the clip, inserted the clip tightly into the gun before releasing the safety, and moving closer toward the muffled sound that Evan was making. "No one is going to save you slut," the man said, his right fist tangled painfully in Evan's hair and his other holding a knife, the same knife that he had used to stab Nathan. He was thrusting his cock hard, deep and painfully into Evan's mouth, causing the boy to gag each time that the man's cock buried itself in Evan's throat. Hunter crept closer, being careful as to where he stepped, not wanting to make a noise. Evan pulled away from the man, the killer's cock fell from his mouth and Evan fell backwards, his eyes immediately found Hunter, but quickly returned to the man who had raised his arm, the knife picking up the light of the moon, and was about to come down, ending Evan's life. Evan rolled to his right quickly, a twig snapped and the killer turned quickly toward the sound, only to see Hunter, not ten feet from him. "Nooooo," the man screamed out and lunged toward Hunter, the hand with the knife fully extended toward Hunter as he emerged from the shadows. Hunter fired his gun, once, twice, but the killer kept coming. He fired it a third time and the man fell at Hunter's feet, his hand and knife underneath him. Hunter hurried over to a naked Evan, pulled him quickly into his arms. Evan was crying profusely, deep, hard sobs that threatened his breathing. "I've got you son, he can no longer hurt you," Hunter said, his voice calming and soothing. "Is Nathan dead?" Evan asked, once he regained control of his emotions, looking up into Hunter's eyes. "He's seriously wounded son, but I think he's going to make it." He said as Mike, along with several other officers, came running up to them. "Is the boy alright," Mike asked, kneeling beside Hunter. "Physically yes, but..." Hunter's eyes told the rest to Mike, who simply nodded his understanding. "Hunter, take this," a fellow officer said, handing him a blanket to wrap Evan in. Hunter took the blanket and wrapped it around his boy, before standing up. He helped Evan to his feet, but his legs gave out and Hunter whisked the boy up into his arms, carrying him toward the ambulance that had just arrived. Hunter gently laid the boy on the stretcher, stayed at his head while the paramedics did their job on the boy. "He's been sodomized officer," one paramedic observed, noting that Evan's rosebud was bleeding some. 'Just what he didn't need, another man doing to him just what his father had done and undoing all the work that I did to get him to trust again' Hunter thought, as Evan looked up with tear filled eyes at him. "I'm ok dad... really I am," Evan said, his mouth held a hint of a smile to assure Hunter, letting him know that he would make it through this also because of him. "I'm right here for you Evan and I always will be," Hunter whispered, his voice soothing, assuring, his very breath brushing against Evan's ear. "I need to answer some questions here before I can leave son, but I will join you soon at the hospital," he promised. Evan's eyes pleaded, begged for him to accompany him. Hunter's heart broke looking into those pools of blue. "Give me one moment guys and I'll be right back," Hunter said before hurrying from the ambulance to find the lead detective. "This is not going to go over good with the mayor," Detective Harry Branson said to several of those around him. "What's wrong Harry," concerned Hunter asked coming into the conversation. "The man that you shot, did you get a look at him Hunter?" Harry asked, turning to look at Hunter. "Not really, it just happened so fast that I didn't give much attention to his looks. I was more concerned for my own life and that of my son," he confided, "why Harry?" "That man is Danny Monroe," Harry said, giving Hunter a few minutes to let the name set into his brain. "Not the same Monroe's that the mayor married into," he asked. "One and the same Hunter, Danny is Carol Barkley's brother," referring to the mayor's wife Carol. "This is going to really upset his re-election plans," Harry said. "Why should it Harry, after all, Dean was not responsible for his brother-in-law's actions," Hunter said. "That's true Hunter, but you know how his opponents will take this and run with it, making Dean look responsible some how. If only for not doing enough to stop Danny, or even put the seeds of doubt in the voter's minds about having any knowledge that Danny could have been the killer." "That's bullshit Harry and you know it as well as I do. Dean is a respectable, law abiding citizen. Why he would never put his family's feelings before enforcing the law. Come on Harry, he was police commissioner for over twenty years before running for mayor," Hunter said. "I agree buddy, but all that I am saying is that this is not going to help his re-election campaign." Hunter was upset that this could turn political, when it was clearly a crime. "Everyone knows how he showed no favor when Danny was arrested for rape and attempted murder ten years ago. He was harder on Danny then he had ever been with any other criminals." "Well Hunter, you just mark my words. Bill Grisham will use this to his advantage; I have seen it done over and over with candidates before man." "I guess so Harry, but would you mind if I go to the hospital with Evan, he needs me there for support? Once they release him, he and I will stop at the precinct and answer whatever questions you have." "Yeah buddy, but keep the press away and don't give out any statements yourself. I gotta brief the mayor before this shit hits the streets." "Mums the word buddy," Hunter said and ran off to re-join Evan. *** As soon as Hunter arrived at the hospital, he was told to wait while a doctor examined Evan. Concerned about Nathan, Hunter went to inquire about the boy. "Excuse me nurse, but could you tell me how the boy that was brought in with stab wounds is doing, I'm his legal guardian," Hunter lied, knowing that Nathan lived on the streets. "He's still in surgery sir, but as soon as the doctor is finished, he'll be down to speak with you," she said, and then left. Hunter sat and waited, his mind remembering the sweet love making that he and Evan had shared together. Tears burned his eyes as he thought about how hard and cruel a life Evan had had for such a young boy and he fought to control his tears. He thought of Nathan, whose life is like Evan's, lived on the streets because his parents never wanted him, or could not understand him. "Excuse me sir," a nurse said, drawing Hunter away from his thoughts. "Your son is asking for you, would you come with me," she said, Hunter got up and followed her, his mind still on Nathan. "Dad," Evan cried out as soon as Hunter stepped into the room. Hunter rushed to Evan's bedside; he brushed the hair from Evan's face and planted a soft, comforting kiss on his forehead before looking up at the doctor. "He's going to be just fine sir, physically that is," the doctor said, pulling Hunter aside and talking quietly to him. I could see no signs of internal or external injuries, but psychologically, he is going to need help," he said solemnly. "I realised that doctor, and I already have a doctor in mind," he assured him. "May I ask who?" the doctor inquired. "Doctor Ethan O'Brien," Hunter said. "Very good sir, Ethan and I go back far together, a good choice," the doctor assured him. "Let me get his paperwork done and you can take him home," he said. "I'll be waiting in the other room until my ward is out of surgery. He was the boy that was stabbed numerous times tonight by the same man that assaulted Evan." "How tragic," the doctor said, shaking his head in disgust. "Our most valuable treasure is our children and yet they are the ones that are so abused." "You have no idea as to the truth of that statement." Hunter said. "Oh but I do officer, I am at the end that has to fix up the abuse, or at least try to," he said, resting his hand on Hunter's shoulder. "Well let me get together Evan's paperwork and I'll be right back." Hunter returned to Evan's bedside, Evan pushed over so Hunter could sit beside him. "What's a ward dad," Evan asked, having never heard the term before. "It's someone, usually a child that is put legally into the care of an adult by the state. Like you Evan, you are my ward," he said. "I thought that I was your son, dad?" Evan looked hurt. "You are to me Evan, but legally, you are just my ward until I am allowed to legally adopt you." "You would do that dad, adopt me and what about Nate, are you gonna adopt him also?" he asked. "If the state lets me, I would be proud to adopt him," Hunter told him, but he saw just a hint of jealousy in the boy's eyes. "But even if I do Evan, you will always be more to me. I love you Evan and I want to spend the rest of my life with you," he assured him, dispelling Evan's fears. "I love you too dad," Evan said quietly and cringed when Hunter tried to pull him into his arms. The doctor returned with Evan's paperwork and a prescription to help his sleep. They spoke briefly before the doctor shook Hunter's hand, gave a wave and smile to Evan, and then left the room. Hunter looked around the room for clothes and then remembered that Evan had been brought in naked. He was about to leave the room when a nurse entered, carrying a set of scrubs for the boy. "I figured he couldn't go home the same way that he arrived," she mused, handing the scrubs to Hunter. "I don't think he'd like that Diane," Hunter said, looking at her name badge for her name. "Thank you very much," he turned, waited for her to close the door before he tried to pull back the covers from Evan. Evan grabbed at the sheet, holding it to him to cover his body. Hunter knew right away that he was suffering from the affects of his attack. He knew also that it would take him a while to get over this attack. "Why don't I wait outside while you get dressed son," Hunter said, sensing that Evan was even uncomfortable with him in the room. Evan nodded. *** The door opened and out stepped Evan, looking like one of the staff in his light blue scrubs. He didn't smile, but he didn't frown either. Hunter took him to the sitting area so they could wait to hear about Nathan and talk in Evan wished to. "Am I a magnet for rape and abuse dad?" Evan said after several long and quiet minutes. "Of course you're not Evan, why would you even think such a thing. None of this or what your father did to you was your fault. As it is, I should have never been at the park with you son, not at this hour of the night. I still have to stop by the station and give my statement about this evening." "I just feel that I have this sign on my forehead that says, `hey men abuse me'," Evan said quietly, not bothering to look up at Hunter. "Well there is a sign son, but it says, `love me, guide me and teach me to love'," Hunter said, eliciting a half smile from Evan. "Evan, please listen to me," Hunter began. "You have had more happen to you in your young life than most people do that live to be one hundred," he assured him. "It is not your fault what happened to you, and for that matter what happened to Nathan tonight, it just happened. You both were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and so was I son." Hunter put his arm tenderly over Evan's shoulder, but immediately the boy sprang from the chair and walked to the window. Hunter walked over to Evan, stood behind and whispered he loved him softly in the boy's ear. "Evan please don't do this to yourself son," Hunter said, Evan tried to retreat from the closeness but Hunter kept him in place. "Try and remember what we shared tonight son, you know, at the skating house," Hunter reminded him. "You use me just like my dad did, but you hide it under the disguise of love," Evan said, looking cold, angry and hard in Hunter's eyes. Hunter stepped back several steps, his heart was aching, breaking from the words that his son had said. Evan remained stoic, his eyes glued to Hunter's, and Hunter could almost see hatred in them and it made him hurt even more. "Surely you can't mean that Evan, I would never, ever do that to you," Hunter said, his tears burning behind his eyes and in his throat. "Wouldn't you dad, wouldn't you use anything means possible to get me into bed with you?" Hunter just stood there slowly shaking his head no, his tears now running down his cheeks. Although Evan was falling in love with him, his anger, pain and mistrust was stronger at that moment. "Son..." "Can we just go home, I'm tired and really need to sleep," Evan said, his voice was colder than ice and his eyes betrayed the pain that the years of abuse had caused him. "I need to wait to see how Nathan is doing, but if you can't absolutely wait, I'll call a taxi for you," he said. "Whatever," Evan said and wandered off to a corner chair, sat down, picked up a magazine and absently ran his eyes over its content. Hunter sat there fighting back the tears that were choking him, his eyes burned with the tears that were welling up behind them. Yes he was guilty of having had sex with the boy, but he truly loved Evan. Evan glanced over the top of the magazine occasionally; his heart was breaking because of the way he had treated Hunter. He loved how he had tenderly made love to him, but he couldn't get the years of pain and abuse at the hands of his father and his friends out of his mind. The beatings were severe, and his father had blamed Evan's beauty for the rapes. 'It's your fucking beauty that makes me want to have sex with you boy, you're to fucking beautiful for a boy,' his father would yell and then begin the long hours of beating and raping him, even letting his drunken friends take turns raping him. "Excuse me sir, but are you here for the boy that was brought in with the stab wounds?" the doctor asked Hunter, bringing him back to the present. "Yes doctor, I'm his guardian; how is the boy doing," Hunter asked standing up. "I'm Doctor Jones and your son is going to survive," he began sitting down beside Hunter. Evan immediately came over and sat beside Hunter, he too was concerned about Nathan. "He had three stab wounds and from what I could see, the perpetrator inflicted them to cause pain instead of death. Each wound missed the boy's vital organs, but he suffered a massive loss of blood." He glanced down at the dried blood on Hunter's shirt, and his mind began to wonder. "I immediately tried to stop as much of the bleeding as I could doctor, but with so many wounds and only two hands, I focused on the most severe of the three. If I hadn't called out at the man, he would have definitely stabbed Nathan to death; he had already killed at least six that we know of," Hunter said, reassuring the doctor that he was no way connected to Nathan's injuries. "Well he's resting now and should be out for at least the next seven or eight hours, if he continues to improve, he should be able to go home in a week," he said. "Thank you doctor, I will take my son here home and come back tomorrow," Hunter said, they both got up, shook hands and the doctor walked off. "I'm happy that Nathan is going to be alright Evan, let's get you home and get you to bed," Hunter said. He put his arm over Evan's shoulders; the boy shrugged it off and walked several steps ahead of Hunter. Hunter quickened his steps and once he caught up with Evan, he grabbed his arm and turned him to face him. "If I'm that much of an abomination to you Evan, I can call youth services tomorrow and have you placed in a foster home if you wish," Hunter said, letting go of Evan's arm. "Yeah whatever," Evan snapped, turned away and walked off without saying a further word. *** As they stepped off the elevator, Gary and Mike were standing there waiting for the elevator. Hunter paused; Evan continued on, Hunter was surprised to see them standing there... together. "Mike... Gary, what are you two doing here?" he asked. "Once I finished the paperwork, the captain let me leave. I was driving by the bar, on my way to the hospital and saw Gary locking up, so I stopped and told him about Evan and Nathan," Mike explained. "So we figured that you might still be here, so I hitched a ride with Mike, we figured if you were still here and see how the boys were doing." Gary explained, his eyes glowing as he looked at Mike. "I would have thought that you would have gone home to your little lady," Hunter asked, Gary's eyes shot dagger looks at Hunter for mentioning Mike's wife. "I wanted to see how you were holding up and Gary here needed a ride, so I offered to give him one instead of calling for a taxi," Mike explained. "A taxi..." but Gary quickly interrupted him. "So how are the boys," Gary quickly asked, his eyes trying to convey a message to keep quiet to Hunter, and Hunter finally got it. "Oh right, the boys... well as you can see Evan is physically ok, but mentally, that boy is going to need some serious help. Nathan will recover but will be in the hospital for a week, give or take a day or so," Hunter explained, giving a wink to Gary and assuring him that he would not interfere with his plans. "I guess I'll take Gary home and then head home to an empty house," Mike said. "Empty house?" Hunter questioned, looking intently at Mike and then Gary before turning his eyes back to Mike. "My wife and I had one hell of a fight, so she packed up the kid and went to visit her mother for a few days," he said. "Could I crash at your place Hunter?" he asked but he could see Gary's eyes pleading to let him put Mike up. "I'd love to have you Mike, but I really don't think that's a good idea, Evan is not in a very good condition and I suspect that all hell is going to break loose once we get home," Hunter said, Gary mouthed thank you behind Mike's back. "You can stay with me, if company is what you need Michael," Gary offered, his hand resting gently on Mike's shoulder, and a chill ran down Mike's spine, remembering his encounter with Gary in the bathroom. Mike was torn, torn between this new kind of sex with a man and his wife. His wife had hurt him deeply, telling him that their mailman was more of a man than he was. She felt neglected as a cop's wife and needed him with her, but his duties as a cop kept him away more than he cared to admit. They had gotten married shortly after she found out that she was pregnant, and both of them were virtual strangers to one another. She was a blind date, set up by his friend, and once drunk, she was easy to get into his bed. "If its not imposition Gary, I'd like to stay," he said, his hurt over her words still stinging his ears. Gary smiled. "Well take care guys, I'd better get Evan home and brace myself for the battle," Hunter said. Mike walked over to his car while Gary gave Hunter a hug. "Thank you big guy, I really owe you one," Gary whispered. "Just don't hurt him Gary, he really is a sweet guy, and his wife has already done a head trip on him." "I'm going to love that man so hard that he is going to wonder why he ever got married," Gary mused, kissing Hunter on the cheek before rushing over to Mike's car. "I was beginning to think that I was going to walk home, what with you and those fags all mushy over you," Evan snapped coldly, his eyes held anger and contempt toward Hunter. "Those fags as you call them were here to see how you were," Hunter snapped back, he used the remote to unlock his truck and Evan stood there momentarily before getting in. *** As soon as Hunter and Evan arrived home, Evan began his tirade, he was yelling and calling vicious names. Hunter tried to reason with the boy, but his past and the attack that night, were weighing heavy on his mind and fogging his mind to think rationally. "Evan please listen to me, I know that you're hurt and what your father did to you is clouding your judgment, but I am not like them, I love you son and only want what's best for you," Hunter reasoned, but Evan refused to listen. "You only want what's best for you and that is my body," Evan yelled. "I have a flash news for you mister... you're not my father nor are you getting my body," he turned and ran to his room, slamming the door behind him. Hunter sat there, his heart was shattered, he really did love Evan but the boy could not see it. Wiping the tears from his eyes, he drew a deep breath, and walked down the hall to Evan's room. "Evan, can we talk please," Hunter asked, knocking softly on the door. "I know that you are hurting son, but lets sit and talk like men," he knocked again and then opened his door. A gentle breeze blew the curtains gently from the open window, Hunter glanced around the room and when he saw no sign of Evan, he knew that the boy had left. To be continued...
