Chapter Eight

͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠

Telin n' tel' Feywild nha eath'she ama ent lae;

meno eso liona inorum tel' Rûn Ath tel' Shee Quessir.

Think not the Feywild is always beauty and mirth;

sorrow also resides within the land of the Fey Elves.

͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠ ͠

"Here's the thing, guys," I said. "Three bedrooms. Three boys. If you can choose a room without starting a fistfight, I really don't care who sleeps where."

Figment, still hugging me around the chest, said, "I'll stay with you, Caleb. Dad can have his own room."

Drew giggled and Trace smirked. Rick and I looked at each other, both of us wondering how we should respond to Figment's offer.

I tried to pull Figment off so I could talk to him, but he clutched me even tighter. "Figment, buddy, are you sure about that?" I asked. "Don't you want your own bedroom?"

He shook his head and pressed his face into my belly. His voice was muffled as he spoke. "It's better if I stay with you."

I glanced at Rick. He placed one hand on Figment's shoulder and gently tugged. Figment resisted, but Rick continued pulling until he was able to peel Figment off me and turn his little body around to face his dad. "Figment, I think Caleb would feel more comfortable if he and I shared a room, and the three of you each had your own bedroom."

Figment shook his head. "He wants to be with me. We're soulmates now, so we sleep together. You guys can still have fun, but I need him with me at night."

Rick and Figment stared at each other, neither one blinking. I couldn't be certain, but it seemed they were having a short conversation, telepathically. Of course, that couldn't be, but after a minute or so, Rick nodded and said, "Figment, go with your brothers and make sure they don't fight while they choose their rooms. I need to chat with Caleb for a second."

Trace and Drew headed for the bedrooms with Figment walking between them. When they had all left the room, Rick looked at me and blew out an exasperated breath. "What do you think, Caleb? Is this the time I put my foot down and tell him no?"

"Hey, Rick, he's your boy. I don't want to interfere with your parenting."

"You're not interfering. I just want your opinion."

I shrugged. "You know your boy better than I do. He still seems fragile at times. I think he's making good progress, but I worry that another breakdown is just around the corner."

"So do I," Rick admitted.

"I've always been a firm believer in picking your battles carefully. If he wants to sleep in my bed at night, if that gives him comfort, I don't mind. I really don't think it will matter, because I suspect everyone will find their way into either your bed or my bed every night anyway."

Chuckling, Rick nodded his head. "Good point. So you're okay with Figment `officially' sleeping in your room?"

I thought about it for a moment, just to be sure, and then nodded my head. "I'm fine with it. I'm sure he'll grow out of it soon, and when he sees Trace and Drew picking out the furniture and decorations for their rooms, he'll probably want to do the same."

Squinting at me, Rick asked, "What do mean picking out furniture?"

I wriggled my eyebrows at Rick and said, "You'll see." Turning my head, I yelled out, "ROAD TRIP!"

We heard feet scrambling in the hallway and saw all three boys running around the corner.

Trace asked, "What's going on?"

"We need to head down to Furniture Row," I replied. "I need a few things for the house. Anyone wanna tag along?"

͠ ͠ ͠

I suppose I went a little overboard. Rick certainly thought so, but I wanted the boys to have a room to match their personalities.

Trace chose a sleek, metallic queen-sized bedroom set in charcoal gray. He surprised me when it came to decorations for the walls. I expected sports posters or something similar, but he chose nature prints featuring rugged terrain and breathtaking views. It wasn't at all what I thought a teenager would want, but I guess Trace wanted to break out into the adult world, and his room would certainly make a statement that no little boy slept there.

Drew selected dark maple bedroom furniture and three bean bag chairs. For his walls, he took his time picking out goofy pictures of kids with animals. One was a hilarious print of eight boys standing with their backs to the camera at an outdoor urinal. A pigeon had landed on the head of one boy, and they all seemed to be ignoring it as they focused on peeing. Drew loved the print, and I had to admit it was funny and perfect for his room.

I offered to buy new furniture for Rick's room, but he insisted his old bedroom set would be fine. We'd simply have to hire movers to haul everything across town to my house.

The salesman at Furniture Row promised delivery the following Monday, so we would have to hustle to move my old furniture, desks, and bookshelves into the attic to store them out of the way and make room for the new furniture. It also meant spending one more weekend at Rick's apartment and moving clothes and other small items over to my house at night during the week after the boys got home from school. On Thursday, we could schedule movers to pack up the rest and clear out the apartment for good.

With that settled, I asked what everyone wanted to do for the rest of the day.

"I'm starved," Drew replied. "Can we grab some burgers or something?"

"I want to start packing!" Trace exclaimed. "Maybe move a few things over to Caleb's house tonight. We could sleep in the floor in our new bedrooms!"

"Really?" Rick asked, laughing. "Ready to abandon your old beds so soon?"

"I have MY OWN BEDROOM, Dad! I don't need a bed," Trace insisted.

Drew nodded agreement. "I want to stay in my new room tonight. Decide where I want the bed to go and all, but I'm still STARVING, so we can we grab some food first?"

Figment was quiet, standing next to me, ducking his head and saying nothing.

"What do you think we should do?" I asked, bending down to rub his back in a small circle.

He pouted a bit, then mumbled, "I thought we were going to your house so I could play the new songs I learned this morning."

My heart sank. I'd completely forgotten about Figment's music. I could tell everyone else had too, because we looked at other with mortified frowns.

Rick knelt down in front of Figment and softly asked, "Would it be okay if we ran by the apartment, picked up a few things we need for the night, grabbed some burgers on the way back to Caleb's house, and sat on the floor chomping away while you entertain us with some dinner music?"

Figment started to smile. "You don't have to sit in the floor. You can sit on the couch and listen while I play."

"Then that's what we'll do," Rick said, poking Figment in the side. Figment threw his arms around Rick's neck and allowed his dad to lift him into the air, hugging him.

Figment added, "Drew and Trace don't hafta sleep on the floor in their bedrooms. We can all sleep in Caleb's bed. It's big enough for everyone."

"Hey!" I protested, tickling Figment's ribs. "Who said you can invite everyone to sleep in our bed?"

Figment giggled and struggled to evade my fingers. "You won't care. You like it when we all sleep together."

I stopped tickling him and kissed him on the cheek. "Yes, I do."

͠ ͠ ͠

I dropped Rick, Trace, and Figment off at the apartment to pack enough clothes and sundries to get them through the week, while Drew and I headed for his favorite burger joint.

I knew Drew was up to something by the grin on his face and the impish glint in his eyes. He saw me watching him and smiled. "You wanna help me with something?" he asked.

"Like what?"

"Pranking my dad and brothers."

"Oh? What did you have in mind?"

"You'll help me?" Drew asked.

"Of course, I will."

"Wow," Drew said, surprised but pleased. "I thought you'd tell me to grow up and stop acting like a little kid."

"Now why would I do that?" I asked, placing my hand on Drew's shoulder and giving it a light squeeze. "I don't see anything wrong with being a little kid."

Drew giggled and unzipped a backpack he'd brought from the house. When he'd dashed into his bedroom and rushed back out with the backpack, I'd wondered what he was up to. Now, apparently, he was going to show me. He reached inside and pulled out what looked like a hamburger patty. He held it up to me, chuckling.

I took the patty from him and discovered it was made from rubber, molded and painted to look like a real hamburger patty.

"What are you going to do with this?" I asked.

"It's not what I'm going to do with THIS," he said, reaching in and pulling out several more fake, rubber patties. "It's what I'm going to do with THESE!"

͠ ͠ ͠

After picking up hamburgers for the entire family, we sat in my car, carefully unwrapping each hamburger and replacing the meat with the rubber substitutes. We placed the real patties in a zip-lock baggie Drew had in his backpack. I was surprised and impressed with the thought that had gone into his preparation for this prank. Then we re-wrapped the burgers, now booby-trapped with rubber meat, and put them back in the sack with the fries.

"Okay ... so when we start to eat, take your time," Drew explained. "I had to put fake meat in every burger so we can be sure to prank all three of them. That means your burger and my burger will be fake too, so take your time unwrapping it. We don't wanna give away the joke until they all take a huge bite!"

Nodding, I suggested, "Maybe we should start with our fries. Sip our drinks."

"Yeah!" Drew exclaimed, his excitement growing. "This is gonna be so great!"

The reactions of Rick, Trace and Figment were priceless. Rick was confused, taking a second bite, then staring at his burger. Trace grimaced and spit out his bite. Figment shook his head, then opened his burger and lifted out the rubber patty, wiggling it in the air.

Drew and I fell over, laughing.

The other three attacked us, tickling us mercilessly as they demanded to know where the real burger patties were.

Drew pulled out the zip-lock bag with the meat inside and held it out as a peace offering. They stopped assaulting us to fix their burgers and we finished our meal, with everyone agreeing the burgers tasted much better the second time around.

After we ate, Figment played for us. Every song was skillfully performed. The rest of the family seemed to expect it, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear what a talented young musician he was.

And I discovered that my bed was indeed big enough for everyone, making me wonder how much use we'd get out of the other three bedrooms in the house.

͠ ͠ ͠

The new furniture arrived Monday. Rick and I showed the delivery crew where everything went, keeping in mind Trace's and Drew's requests. After school, the boys ran from room to room, delighted to finally have their own private hang-outs. We ate in the family room again Monday night, listening to Figment play on the piano while we munched on tacos.

I suspected something was up when Trace and Drew moved over and sat down on each side of me, grinning like madmen.

"What are you guys doing?" I asked.

"Nothing," Trace replied.

Drew giggled. "Nothing at all!"

I placed my empty plate on the coffee table and sat back. "Doesn't look like nothing to me." I glanced over at Rick who was smirking. Figment continued playing, but his face was glowing with a happy smile.

Trace slid one hand across my stomach over my shirt, rubbing in a circle, then sliding up my body to my nipples, which he pinched lightly.

Drew didn't waste time, sliding his hand inside the waistband of my pants and underwear and gripping my soft cock, which didn't remain soft for long.

Trace leaned over and kissed my cheek, then began nibbling on my earlobe.

Drew slid his hand deeper into my pants and found my balls. His middle finger probed lower, rubbing my taint.

I jumped, thrusting my groin forward. "This doesn't FEEL like nothing. What are you guys—"

Trace interrupted my question with a kiss on the lips, shoving his tongue into my mouth so I couldn't speak. His hand roamed down my body to unsnap my jeans and grip my throbbing cock, while Drew continued fondling my balls and stroking my taint.

Rick got up and moved in front of me, kneeling down. "Let me help you boys," he said with a grin. He tugged my pants open and worked them down my legs, removing my shoes and pulling my pants completely off. Then he slid down my underwear.

Now, with nothing impeding their access to my lower body, Drew and Trace bent over my crotch and began licking my cock from base to tip, their tongues dancing together, their lips sucking the precum oozing out. Trace took my cock into his mouth and began bobbing up and down while Drew moved down to my balls, sucking first one, then the other. He pulled at my legs, encouraging me to spread them wider so he could move down and lick my taint as well.

I moaned in pleasure, caressing their faces as they licked and sucked.

Rick stood up and leaned down over his boys, kissing me gently on the lips. I opened my mouth, inviting him in, and once again marveled at how delicious his tongue was.

And Figment continued playing on the piano, a beautiful song of tender love and mounting passion.

͠ ͠ ͠

Figment permitted Rick to sleep with us that night; his bed was still at the apartment after all.

Trace and Drew each had their own beds, which they insisted on breaking in that night.

It worked out fine, because after the loving I had received, all I felt like doing was falling asleep with Figment nestled between Rick and me.

͠ ͠ ͠

Tuesday morning, I met Sheri for coffee.

"I miss having you at the game," I said as I hugged her.

She hugged me back and kissed me on the cheek. "I miss being there. I've refused to have sex with Mark on Friday nights to punish him for quitting the group."

I pulled away to look her in the eyes. "Are you serious?"

Her solemn frown broke and she laughed, "No, but I've thought about it."

Relieved, I said, "I don't want this to come between you and Mark."

"It won't," she assured me, "we're still as tight as ever. And you and Rick? How are you getting along."

I thought back to the night before, when Rick and I were tongue-wrestling while FIgment eagerly worked his thin cock in and out of my ass. "We're pretty tight, too," I replied, struggling not to giggle.

I think Sheri suspected the reason behind my laughter, though she might have assumed that Rick was the only one sharing my bed. I wasn't going to correct that assumption, but I couldn't hide how wonderful it was to have Rick and the boys as my housemates. "They moved into my house. We're spending all our time together now."

She squealed with excitement. "Took you long enough."

I shook my head. "I waited a few weeks."

She laughed and grabbed my arm. "Let's order our coffee. Then you can tell me all the sticky details."

That was NOT going to happen, but I couldn't wait to tell her how happy I was with my new family.

͠ ͠ ͠

By Wednesday, we'd moved everything except Rick's bedroom furniture and the packed boxes. Those would have to wait for the moving company. Rick was in the kitchen, fixing a big meal; he loved the kitchen and promised home-cooked meals would now become a common occurrence. Trace was in his room, talking on the phone to friends. Drew was in the family room, playing video games on my computer. Figment and I were in my bedroom with my D&D books scattered across my bed, planning the next campaign. I had decided that the time had come for the party to foray into the Feywild, the land of unicorns, sprites and fey elves.

"If the party hasn't been invited, the fey elves will be hostile," Figment said, tugging at his lip. "They don't like visitors."

"Well, we could issue them an invitation," I replied. I still found it odd how Figment talked about the Feywild as if it was a place he'd been, but he was enjoying `educating' me on the fey elves and their land, so I went along with whatever Figment suggested. "Maybe the fey elves could summon the party to deal with a growing menace in their land."

Figment's face lit up. "That would be perfect. The king of the Eladrin could offer them a bounty for slaying an evil creature that has invaded the Feywild."

I opened my Dungeon Master's guide to the tables in the back and found the list of creatures that would offer a good fight for a party of 14th level adventurers. "Hmmm ... it could be a fire giant, but why would they invade the Feywild? That doesn't really work. Oh, hey, a young dragon. That would be a nice challenge. Just need a reason for a dragon to terrorize the fey elves."

Figment's face lost all color. He stared past me, lost and frightened.

"What's wrong, buddy?" I asked.

His head jerked slightly and his eyes regained focus. He shook his head and whispered, "I ... I don't want to talk about it."

I shoved the books aside and scooted over to take him in my arms. He shivered and curled up into my body, moaning softly. I didn't know what was wrong, but I held him in my arms and began rocking him slowly. Obviously, something I had said had triggered a panic attack of some kind.

I picked him up and carried him to the other side of the bed, where we could lie down without disturbing the books and papers we had spread out. I lay on my back, holding Figment on my chest. He gripped my upper arm in one fist, squeezing and refusing to let go. I slid both arms around him, hugging him, and gradually he relaxed and began breathing deeply.

After a minute, Figment whispered, "The fey elves are visiting your world, you know?"

"Really?" I asked, rocking him gently on my chest.

"Yes."

"Do you know who they are?"

He nodded. "Of course, I do. I'm one of them."

"You're a fey elf?"

More nods. "I'm not a boy. I'm a fey elf. An Eladrin from the Feywild. Everyone in my family is too."

I decided to humor Figment, so I asked, "The Eladrin all have a season, don't they? Trace is a summer elf. Drew is Springtime. Which season are you?"

Figment sighed, "Some of us are all seasons at once. We're called the ilya coiasin, which means `all-times', because we keep every season inside us. That's what I am. An ilya coiasin."

"I see," I whispered. "Is that why you are sometimes playful, sometimes angry?"

"Yes," he admitted. "The ilya coiasin are rare and considered blessed within the Eladrin, for we know what it is like to be every season and yet none." Figment lifted his head and looked me in the eye. "Humans are ilya colasin. They can't decide which season they will be. Sometimes they are calm, sometimes aggressive, sometimes playful."

I rubbed his back gently and asked, "Is that what I am? An all-season human?"

Figment shook his head in denial. "I don't think so. I think you might actually be a fey elf too, but you're a Winter elf right now. You are often sad and cold, but you're learning to be Springtime when you're with Drew and learning to be wild Summer when you're with Trace."

I laughed softly. "Your family is showing me all the seasons. It's fun for me."

Figment nodded. "I asked them to."

That comment struck me as odd, but Figment seemed to be relaxing now as we talked. "Tell me more," I requested. "Tell me about the land of Fey where your family came from and how you ended up in Colorado Springs."

He dropped back down on my chest and tucked his head under my chin. "The Feywild is a beautiful land," he said with a sigh. "The mountains are higher than what you have here in Colorado. The canyons are deeper. The forests are wilder and filled with wondrous creatures. The city of the fey elves has towers and bridges and a strong castle, where the king and his sons live."

"Is there a queen?"

Figment's voice fell to the softest of whispers. "There was a queen. She was the most beautiful elf of them all, and her voice was magical. She could play any instrument. Harp. Lute. Mandolin. She was a powerful bard, and the spells she cast with her songs wove amazing illusions."

"Music is magical for you, isn't it Figment?"

He nodded his head. "I learned to play from the queen. She taught me everything I know."

I held him against my chest and rocked him gently.

Figment began speaking again, so softly I struggled to hear him. "The queen is no more," he whispered. "She loved to walk the hills of the Feywild, gathering flowers for her hair, while she played happy songs for the creatures there. One day, she stumbled upon a shadowdragon. It didn't belong in the Feywild. Shadowdragons come from the Shadowfell, the land of unending death, and they love to hunt and kill unicorns. The queen fought the dragon, using all her spells to drive it away, but it breathed on her and defeated her. She died, and now, the king and his sons are all alone."

I hugged Figment, struggling not to cry. He didn't move, resting on my chest, breathing deeply. I had begun to think he had fallen asleep when he whispered, "My mother didn't die of cancer."

"She didn't?"

"No," he replied. "A shadowdragon slew her. That's why we're here."

"That's why you came from the Feywild to Colorado?"

"Yes. To be with you."

I felt chills rolling through my body. "Why would you do that?" I asked.

"To find my lost voice ... to sing again ..."

͠ ͠ ͠

"He seemed to believe every word of it," I told Rick the next morning as we watched the movers loading the last of the apartment furniture into their van. "It broke my heart when he said a shadowdragon killed his mother."

Rick swallowed convulsively. "His mother was a wonderful storyteller. Every night, she would hold Figment in her lap and tell him about fantastic realms where magic was possible and little boys could grow up to be great wizards." He wiped a tear from his eye. "Figment has always had a great imagination, you know. He gets it from his mom. I don't know whether he'll be a great musician or a famous novelist when he grows up."

"Do you think we should go along with his fantasies about being a fey elf?"

"I don't think it hurts anything, and it might actually help him to heal."

I nodded. Rick had a point.

The movers carried the last box out of the apartment and up into the moving van. Rick and I walked through the apartment one last time, looking for anything we'd missed, then he locked the door behind us.

͠ ͠ ͠

We sat on the couch in the family room that night, listening to Figment play on the piano while Drew and Trace took turns playing a game on my computer.

"I really need to buy them a game console," I mumbled, mostly to myself.

Rick, sitting next to me, sipped his wine and chuckled. "When are you going to stop spoiling us?"

"In a few months," I replied. "After I get tired of having a family of my own." I couldn't help myself. My eyes filled with tears, joyful, not sad, because I finally felt I had a family to love and care for.

Rick sensed my melancholy mood. He turned his head and kissed me gently, playing with my lips a bit before smiling and saying, "You wanna know something ... Figment did get one thing right."

"Oh? What's that?"

"You are a bit of a Winter fey elf."

"Yeah?"

"Yes, I think you are. Maybe I can thaw you out."

I smiled. "I'm willing to let you try."

He took our wine glasses and set it them on the table. Then he placed one hand on my cheek and tenderly stroked my jawline, running his fingers down to my lips, caressing, exploring. His fingers moved back to my cheek, then to my eyebrow, brushing away a stray lock of hair.

"You have beautiful eyes," he whispered.

I snorted. "They're plain and brown."

"They're deep and generous, with golden specks of passion." Rick leaned in and kissed my cheek. I closed my eyes and he kissed them, chuckling when my eye lashes tickled his lips. He moved down, kissing the tip of my nose, then grazed my lips with his own. His breath caressed my face, bathing me in loving warmth.

I felt the couch sink next to me and opened my eyes to see Trace reaching for my shoulder. His hand was gentle, tenderly squeezing, sliding down my arm to grip my elbow briefly, then moving down to slide his fingers into mine, holding my hand as a lover would. He kissed my shoulder, my neck, my cheek.

Drew moved in front of me and knelt down. He rested his head in my lap, turning his face sideways and hugging my hips. One hand slid down to gently stroke my inner thigh. Playful, but delicate, fingers dancing, then softly stroking.

Never had I felt more loved.

Figment played on, serenading us.

͠ ͠ ͠

Drained of desire, I was totally relaxed, stretched out in my bed with only Figment for company. My body still tingled from the exquisite love-making I had just received from Rick and Trace and Drew. It had been warm and loving, with hints of playful Springtime, passionate Summer, and tranquil Autumn.

Now they were all in their own rooms, and the house was silent.

My arm was around Figment, holding him to my side. His head rested on my chest, using me as his pillow. His arm was draped across my chest, hugging me, holding me.

I stroked the soft skin in the small of Figment's back, delighting in the feel of his naked body pressed against my own. I was happy and content, amazed at the way my Winter was finally melting away.

I began to doze off, and although I couldn't be certain, I thought I heard Figment whispering, "Now do you believe me?"
