Chapter 2 The house was full. Billy and Justin were on the couch watching a movie. Ry and his girlfriend, Amanda, were at the kitchen table talking about their plans for the weekend. Charlie went to the refrigerator and got himself a coke. "Where's Dad?" Charlie asked his eldest brother. "In the garage, I think," Ry replied. Charlie went down the tiny hall off of the kitchen, through the mudroom and opened the garage door. Rick was opening several boxes on the other side of the room. Charlie scowled at the sight of his dad's new girlfriend. Brenda had been Ry's nurse when they first moved to Washington. Once Ry was able to start walking on his own and taking care of himself, Brenda was no longer needed; however, she and Rick had kept seeing each other, and eventually told everyone that they were officially dating. Charlie didn't care for her. He felt that she was bossy and nosy, and he didn't like that she treated him differently when his dad wasn't around, as if she was trying to be his mom. Billy and Ry didn't see anything different about her, which bugged him a lot. "Hi Charlie," Brenda said. She smiled and gave a short wave; neither were returned by the 10-year-old. "Dad," Charlie said, ignoring Brenda. "Is it okay if I bring my new bear with us? Justin got it for me at the fair, and I don't think it would take up too much room in my bag, or I could hold it on my lap." Rick looked up confused. "What are you talking about, Little Man?" Charlie recognized the look and tried very hard to not get instantly upset. "We're supposed to see Mom tomorrow, and I want to bring my new bear." "Shit," Rick said, and tears started to form at the corners of Charlie's eyes. "I totally forgot, Charlie. I'm so sorry, but we can't see your mom this weekend. I already told Brenda that I'd go with her to a nursing conference this weekend." The little boy started to choke on his words as his anger, bitterness and disappointment welled up in his throat. "You promised," he said. "I know, kiddo, but I also promised Brenda--" "I haven't seen Mom in months, and you said we would this weekend. You promised!" Charlie's pain and anxiety were too much and he started to hyperventilate. Rick and Brenda rushed over, and Rick was able to catch Charlie before his head hit the concrete floor. Inside, Charlie was seething. He couldn't stop his body from taking his breath away nor making his head spin, and all he wanted to do was to tell Brenda to leave him alone and not touch him. Instead he gasped and struggled for air as the nurse kept trying to talk him down. Rick picked Charlie up and brought him into the house. He ordered the boys off of the couch and laid Charlie down. He stroked Charlie's forehead and tried soothing his youngest son, but nothing he did seemed to help. "Can I try something?" Justin asked. Without waiting for a response, he squeezed himself between Rick and Brenda, leaned down over Charlie, put his strong arms around him and started whispering in the boy's ear. He kept this up for about a minute or two and Charlie's breathing started to slow and the look of sad panic in his eyes faded. Justin stood up after Charlie closed his eyes and fell asleep. "How?" was all Rick could get out, astonished at what he had just seen. "I tutor in the Special Education Department at school," Justin replied with a shrug. "I've seen teachers do stuff like this to get some of the kids to calm down." "What did you say to him?" Brenda asked, looking impressed. "I told him that he was okay, safe and that I wasn't going to let anything happen to him. Then I asked him to breathe like I was and he did." "We need to remember that for next time," she said to Rick. "Well, it doesn't work for everyone," Justin said, failing to mention that Brenda would only make it worse, knowing how much Charlie loathed her. Justin gently lifted Charlie's head and sat back down on the couch, placing the boy's head in his lap. Billy sat at the other end, putting his brother's feet in his lap. "I really think I should stay," Rick said to Brenda. "I did promise him, and it's in the divorce that I'd bring him when we wanted to see his mom." "But, we've had these plans for months," Brenda pleaded. "And I can't refund the tickets or the room." Rick sighed and nodded. His ex-wife, Ronda, was serving six years in prison for attacking their former neighbor, who had molested Billy. The divorce was smooth, but visits were tense, especially after she found out that his middle son's biological father was back in the picture and Billy had changed his name from "Kyle." Rick would rather not see her ever again, but Charlie was their son and had a strong bond with his mother. "I guess Charlie and I could go next weekend," Rick conceded. "Can't," Billy said. "We're supposed to go on that father-son camping trip with Pat and Ronnie." Billy gave his dad a knowing look. "Fuck," Rick exclaimed. "I totally forgot. Maybe the weekend after." "Can't," Ry called out from the kitchen. "We're all supposed to help Will move." Rick rolled his eyes. Billy's other father, Will, said he needed as many hands as possible to move into his new place, but wouldn't say where exactly he was moving; only that it was a "surprise." In the end, Rick said that he'd work things out. Charlie opened his eyes a couple hours later and looked up into Justin's smiling face. "How are you feeling?" Justin whispered, still stroking Charlie's hair. The boy sat up, leaned against the teen and said he was fine, though his voice betrayed his disappointment. The house was unusually silent. "Where is everyone?" Justin explained that Will came and got Billy a little bit after Charlie had fallen asleep. Ry and Amanda went camping with her parents for the weekend. "And I told your dad that I'd look after you this weekend, since we all know how much you love Brenda," Justin said sarcastically. "So, you're babysitting me all weekend?" Charlie asked. "If you want to call it babysitting," Justin said with a grin. "I like to think of it as spending time with my favorite Barton." "What about Billy?" Charlie asked, unable to hide his smile. "He's a Parker-Barton, right? So technically, that makes you my favorite Barton...but don't tell him I said that. He's already jealous that I'm spending the weekend with you and not him." "Promise," Charlie said, as he slid under Justin's arm and gave the young man a hug, which was lovingly returned. Rick had given Justin $200 for the weekend (mostly out of guilt), so Justin took Charlie out to dinner and movie. They went to Charlie's favorite restaurant. It was a local pizza parlor that had an arcade and playground. Charlie was given $10 in quarters, and it didn't take him very long to spend it all winning prize tickets. "Here," Charlie said, handing Justin a small unicorn. "You got me a bear, so I got you this." "Aw," Justin said, blushing a little. "I love it," he added and gave Charlie a hug. "I'll sleep with it every night." "You don't have to if you don't want to," Charlie said, feeling a little embarrassed. "I do want to, and you can't stop me." "What about Billy?" "Screw him," Justin said, causing Charlie to giggle. "He can deal with it if he doesn't like it." They left about an hour later for the movie. It took some convincing on Justin's part to get Charlie out of the play structure. Charlie wanted Justin to play too, but Justin had to point out several times that he was way too tall to fit inside. It wasn't until Justin offered to get Charlie his own large popcorn that the boy finally came down. The movie was an action comedy. Charlie wanted to see the newest horror movie, but Justin refused saying that he didn't want nightmares. In truth, he was aware of Charlie's history of night terrors and didn't want to trigger the boy's fears. "Two large popcorn and one large coke," Justin ordered. "Why can't I have my own?" Charlie asked. "It's rather late and we both don't need the sugar. Besides," Justin said with a wink, "you're already sweet as it is." Charlie rolled his eyes but couldn't resist smiling and blushing. "You're a dork," he said, grabbing his own tub of extra-buttery goodness. Justin knew he made the right choice when he saw how heavy Charlie flinched every time someone in the movie fired a gun. Billy never explained what happened to Charlie and Ry that caused their issues, and Justin didn't feel comfortable asking either of them. Not that Ry would have answered, as Ry didn't seem to like Justin at all, and Billy said that Charlie didn't ever talk about it. "We can leave if you want," Justin whispered to Charlie, who was clinging to his arm. "No, I'm fine," Charlie whispered back. "It's okay to be scared," Justin said, rubbing Charlie's hand. "I'm fine," Charlie asserted. Justin gave it a few more minutes and told Charlie that the noise was giving him a headache. "I guess we can leave," Charlie said, a note of relief in his voice. "I don't want you to be scared," Charlie accidentally and unknowingly let slip. "Thank you for being so considerate," Justin said, taking Charlie's hand in his. They walked around the mall for a little bit before heading home. "Bath time," Justin called out as they entered the house. Charlie insisted that he didn't need one, but Rick had said that Charlie really needed a shower. "No arguing. Nobody likes a smelly boy." "I'm not smelly," Charlie said, smelling his armpits. He wrinkled his nose and said, "Fine," and went about gathering his things. After Charlie took his shower, Justin took his. When he was done, Justin came out of Billy's room wearing only a pair of blue briefs and carrying his new unicorn. He saw that Charlie was wearing pajama bottoms, holding the bear Justin had given him. Unbothered, Justin sat next to Charlie on the couch. The young boy scooted over and slid under Justin's arm and put his head on the 17-year-old's chest. Justin gave Charlie a hug and turned on the television. It was very dark inside, as Charlie opened the door. As soon as he crossed the threshold, he heard the door slam shut behind him, causing the tiny boy to jump. A large room lay before him with a long, barely lit hall to his right. In the room he could see a black-on-black shadow swaying back and forth. The shadow scared him, though he couldn't see what was making it, so he went down the hall. Two doors were open: One to his right and one at the end of the hall. There was a window but it was pitch black outside. Charlie looked into the room to his right and saw a dark mound in the middle of the floor. He wanted desperately to call out to it, but he couldn't find his voice. He moved down the hall towards the other room. A voice inside of him screamed for him to stop, but his legs moved him forward despite the warnings. Charlie reached a small, chubby hand out, and pushed the door open a little more.... KABLAM!!! Charlie's eyes flew open. A flash of light illuminated his bedroom quickly followed by a very loud thunderclap. Hail slammed into his window. Charlie's breathing was labored. He often had nightmares, but he rarely remembered them. Unfortunately, he remembered the one that just woke him. Even though he was sweaty, he shook mostly out of fear. Normally, he would've left his room and slept with either his dad or Ry, as Billy made such a big deal out of it, he felt too ashamed of himself to try finding comfort in his elder brother. However, the only other person in the house was Justin, and he wasn't certain how Justin would feel about having a scared, little boy sleeping next to him. KABLAM!!! CRACK!!! Charlie nearly screamed as a branch from the tree outside slammed into his window at the same time another clap of thunder struck. Charlie threw caution to the wind, grabbed his bear and ran from his room. Billy's room was at the top of stairs, next to their dad's room. Charlie steadied himself the best he could and quietly opened the door with a shaky hand. He could see Justin laying on his side, facing Billy's side of the bed. Charlie went around and as stealthy as he could, climbed into the bed. "Hey," Justin whispered. Charlie almost fell out of the bed, he was so taken off guard. "Did the noise scare your bear?" Justin asked. "Yes," Charlie said with a quivering voice. "Come here," Justin said, pulling Charlie bodily into his arms. "We'll make sure he's safe, okay?" "Okay," Charlie said, as he put his face into Justin's muscled chest. Justin wrapped his long arms around the shaking boy and said, "Mr. Unicorn was scared too, so I'm glad you can help protect him with me." It was then that Charlie noticed that Justin had been sleeping with the unicorn. Another loud boom of thunder caused Charlie to jump. Justin rubbed Charlie's back and told him that everyone was going to be safe and there was nothing to worry about. Charlie couldn't help but cry. Of all the people in his life, Justin should've been the last person to help him. Everyone else had left him alone, but Justin gave up his weekend to take care of him. "Why are you being so nice to me?" Charlie muttered through his tears. Without hesitation, Justin said, "I really like you, Charlie, and I care about you. Billy might think you're a pain, but I wish I had you as my little brother." "I wish you were my big brother, too." Justin titled his head down and kissed the top of Charlie's head and pulled him in closer. "How's your bear feeling now?" "I don't think he's scared anymore," Charlie whispered. He paused and said, "Does that mean I have to go back to my room?" "Nope," Justin said, continuing to rub Charlie's back. "Mr. Unicorn seems happy with you next to him, so I think you should stay...unless you want to go back to your room." "No, I think I should stay. I don't want Mr. Unicorn being upset that I left." "Good," Justin said, kissing Charlie again, as the pair fell quickly asleep. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 3***
