Chapter 25 All Hallows Eve was quickly approaching. Fallen leaves created a beautiful carpet of golds, reds, yellows and oranges on the sidewalks. The odor of decaying foliage, rotting apples and wood smoke filled the crisp, autumn air. The days were noticeably shorter and the nights ever longer. Geese were heard as they flew to warmer climes to the south. Ghouls and ghosts hung from trees and porches, as scary Jack-o-Lanterns lined walkways and stoops. Halloween fell in the middle of the week, but Rick agreed to let the boys take the next day off of school. Billy was a bit depressed. Trevor failed to show up for their coffee date. Apparently, Antonio's husband had been in the hospital, and Trevor went to show his support. To make up for it, Trevor invited Billy and Justin to a Halloween party at his mom's place. Amanda was forced to watch her younger brothers, as her father had a work party to attend. Ry still hadn't been around her family since the camping trip, and the prospect of spending an evening with her obnoxious, spoiled brothers was less than appealing. Charlie managed to convince his father to let Joey and David go trick-or-treating with them. Rick was still uncertain about Joey but agreed, nonetheless. David's parents didn't approve of Halloween, believing that it was a night when demons roamed the Earth snatching babies and possessing people. Charlie found the whole notion funny and stupid, but David's father truly believed it. It took the full efforts of David, Charlie and Joey begging and pleading to get Mr. Williams to agree, but only under the condition that Rick check all the candy for poisons and tampering, and that Charlie and Joey had to go to church with the Williams' that Sunday. "I still don't see why your dad has a problem with Halloween," Charlie said, as he and his friends tried on costumes. "If Jesus died and came back from the dead, that technically makes him a zombie." Joey laughed and David looked a little fearful of Charlie's blasphemy, as if waiting for his friend to be struck down by lightning. Charlie decided to go as a zombie, Joey wanted to go as Frankenstein's Monster, and David chose a ghost costume but changed to being a vampire after pressure from his friends. Everyone was allowed to dress up for class, but the friends decided not to. David wasn't comfortable wearing all that makeup and Charlie figured that Jack and his friends would only try to bully them. Jack still made several snarky remarks on the playground when Ms. Jensen wasn't around or was distracted by Mr. Stowe. Jack came dressed like a medieval peasant, complete with tunic and stockings. Charlie fought yet failed to stifle a laugh. Charlie knew that Jack always came to school as the title character from Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack probably thought it was cute, and it was when he was younger; however, Jack had started puberty and it was clear to everyone that he didn't have underwear on. As Jack walked about, everyone could see his hardened penis moving back and forth in his tights. Even though Charlie hadn't started puberty, he could clearly tell that his dick was still bigger than Jack's. However, Jack seemed oblivious and walked straight to his desk at the back of the room, ignoring the snickering and stares. Jack didn't remain in class for very long. Mrs. McGrady decided to have a rare moment of fun. The class was to play hangman. The words were to be from their spelling lists. She split the class in two again. The rules were simple: Each side got to guess a letter. If they guessed correctly, they got a point. They could go for double points by picking someone from the other team to put it on the board. The bonus point would be awarded if the selected person placed it on the board incorrectly. This time Charlie, David and Joey ended up on the same side. Charlie looked at Joey, gave him a devilish grin and whispered to him. Joey chuckled and nodded. It took a while, but eventually, Mrs. McGrady called upon Charlie. Charlie had seen enough word-based game shows to know which letters came up the most. "S?" Charlie asked his teacher. "That's correct," Mrs. McGrady said. "Would you like to try for a bonus point, Charlie?" "Yes, ma'am," the boy said. "I choose Jack." Jack sneered. He like everyone else knew the word was Mississippi. It was the only eleven letter word on their list. Jack stood and walked across the room, confident in his knowledge. He was so confident, in fact, that he decided to strut to the blackboard, which had the desired effect. Charlie and Joey watched as Jack's dick got longer and longer, and harder and harder. By the time, Jack stood in front of their teacher to get the piece of chalk, his penis was sticking out, pushing against the thin fabric. The fabric was so thin that even the chuckling girls in the back could see that Jack was circumcised. Charlie's eyes widened as he saw a dark, wet spot starting to spread around the head of Jack's penis. Even though he didn't know the word for it, he knew from that night with Justin, that Jack was leaking the clear, sticky liquid. "Jack peed himself!" One of the girls yelled. "No I didn't," Jack said. He then looked down and his face turned bright red. "Jack Trapper!" Mrs. McGrady barked. The old woman hadn't noticed her student's erection until Wendy cried out. "Go to the nurse's office right now!" "But I didn't pee myself!" Jack protested, trying desperately to cover himself. "NOW!" The teacher shouted. Jack rushed from the room, as the remaining students laughed and mocked him. Charlie and Joey bumped fists and joined the laughter. At lunch, the pair in formed their smaller friend of the plan. David thought it was really mean, even when the boys tried to justify their actions. When they returned to class, someone had gathered Jack's belongings. He didn't return to class that day, and Charlie felt a little sorry for what he had started...but only a little sorry. Charlie's guilty feels subsided once he and his friends got to his house. Billy dropped Ry off and left for his father's. Ry helped with everyone's homework and was in the process of making dinner when Rick got home. He looked very tired, and Charlie was concerned that his father was going to back out; however, Rick took a quick nap and Ry offered to go along to help supervise. "It's not like I have anything better to do," the teenager said. "Thanks," Charlie said, hugging his brother. As the sun began to set, Ry helped everyone with their makeup, especially David, who wasn't allowed to watch horror movies and didn't really know what a vampire was supposed to look like. When it was Charlie's turn to have his zombie makeup applied, he held his annoyance, as he watched how steady Ry's hands were, especially when putting on the eyeliner. He made a point of remembering that moment for the next time he and his big brother played video games. Rick drove the boys to the "rich" part of town. It was reasoned that there would better candy in the neighborhood than from their middle-class neighbors. Ry walked with the younger kids, while Rick would drive a block or two ahead, so he could rest and take quick naps. Ry took his time. It was rather cold out, which made his bad leg very stiff and difficult to walk with, even with his crutch. Meanwhile, the fifth graders rushed from door to door, collecting the kindly offered sweets. Several times, Ry had to call out for the boys to slowdown. At one point, the group got about a half-block ahead of Ry. "We need to wait here," Charlie said, looking back at his struggling sibling. "Can't he catch up?" Joey asked. David said, "He hasn't yet, and I think that's the fastest he can walk." Joey then asked, "What happened to make him walk like that?" Charlie shivered, which had nothing to do with chill, October air. "He was hit really hard by his dad," Charlie said just above a whisper. "Your dad did that?" David asked, his eyes grew large with shock. "No," Charlie clarified. "HIS dad. Ry was adopted." Charlie told his friends of how Ry and Billy became friends, but left out that they used to be boyfriends. He then explained the problems Ry's birth parents had, and he started to stammer really hard when it came to the night Ry almost died. "I was mad. I saw him as my brother already, and I wanted him home for Christmas...so I went to go get him." Charlie took a second to steel his nerves. He didn't want to cry in front of friends, and he didn't want his makeup to run, since that would only make Ry and their dad ask more questions. Taking one final breath, Charlie said, "I walked into the house...and saw...I saw Ry's mom, she...she was hanging from the ceiling...." It was the most he had ever said about that night. Not even his family knew what he witnessed...unfortunately, watching Mrs. Doernbecher sway from the rope around her neck wasn't the worst thing Charlie saw that night. "Bullshit," a voice called out from behind Joey. The boys jumped, not having noticed anyone approaching. Joey turned and saw Jack Trapper, with a couple of his friends from school, standing a few feet away. "You're a fucking liar, Charlie." "No I'm not!" Charlie growled. His emotions were already on edge, so being called a liar by the boy he hated the most turned his fear and anxiety into hate and rage. "What the fuck would you know, Boner Boy?" Joey clapped back. "Boner Boy?" David said, trying hard not to snicker. "Yeah, didn't you see his willy pointing at Mrs. McGrady?" Joey taunted. "I bet you got a thing for old people, don't you Jack?" Jack was no longer wearing his peasant outfit. Instead he was wearing an all black, policeman's uniform. Despite the costume change, it didn't hide his reddening face. Jack sneered and said, "Shut up, faggot." Joey and Charlie dropped their bags and balled up their fists, which was matched by Jack's friends. "Who are you calling a faggot?" Ry said from behind Charlie. Jack's friends took a step back as Ry walked closer. To Charlie, Ry asked, "Who's this little, piece of shit?" Charlie said, "That's Jack Trapper." "The boy you beat the shit out of?" "Yep." Ry moved passed his brother and towards Jack, who stood his ground. Ry watched as Jack sized him up, taking several glances at the lone crutch. The older and much taller boy leaned down and said, "Trapper? As in Marty Trapper?" "Yeah," Jack said, taken aback. "He's my brother." "Huh," Ry said, grinning. In a whisper only meant for Jack, Ry continued. "You might want to think about who you call a faggot, given the great blow jobs your brother gives. He must have learned how from your dad." Everyone watched as Jack started to tear up, struggling to catch what Ry was saying. "And you better think twice before calling my brother a faggot...and a liar." Ry dropped his crutch. With both hands he parted his hair to expose the scar on his scalp from where his own father had hit him repeatedly with the butt of a shotgun. "Charlie wasn't lying. My father did this to me...and I know what your father did to your brother...and if I had to guess, I'd say he did the same thing to you." Ry caught a glimpse of Jack clenching his fist. Ry whispered just loud enough for Jack to hear him and said, "If you think you're man enough, swing at me. I promise you're not tough enough nor strong enough to hurt me. But, if you do hit me, you better pray that I don't ever catch you...and I will catch you...because I'll take that crutch and show you what pain is really like." To everyone, once again, Ry said, "Now, we can all forget about this and move on, or we can find out who can take a punch." Jack wiped away the tears from his face and stormed off, followed by his friends. Joey turned to Charlie, a look of awe on his face, and he said, "Dude, your brother is a badass." Proudly, Charlie said, "I know." "Come on, Midgets," Ry said, as he grabbed his crutch and started walking towards Rick's car. The boys hastily followed their new hero. "What was that all about?" Rick said, as they got into the car. As if it were just another day, Ry replied, "Oh, just a bunch of assholes being dicks, is all." The boys burst out laughing from the backseat, as Rick told his eldest to watch his language. The rest of the night was spent at the house watching old horror movies. Joey and Charlie didn't much care for them, having seen worse, but David, who was very sheltered, was frightened and jumped several times. Having viewed countless scary movies, Joey was able to predict the jump-scares with great ease. Several times, he'd sneak up behind David and wait till a body dropped or something unexpected would happen. He'd then grab David and cry out, causing his friend to scream. It got to the point where David started to cry and Rick told them all to knock it off. Joey felt bad for what he did and apologized; he even teared up himself. At bedtime, the three friends got into Charlie's bed with David in the middle. Joey wrapped his arms around the shaking boy and promised to not let anything happen to him. Ry came in and saw that the bed was very cramped, as it barely held two people. He saw that David and Joey were asleep. Joey was the big spoon to David's little spoon. Charlie was on the edge of the bed, looking as if he was about to fall out. He made his way around the bed and saw that Charlie was awake. "Hey, why don't you sleep with me tonight?" Ry whispered. Charlie nodded groggily and followed his brother down the hall. The brothers got into Ry's bed. Charlie laid his head on Ry's chest, as Ry wrapped his arms around his baby brother. "Better?" Ry asked, hugging Charlie. "Yeah," the boy said, hugging his brother back. "We don't need to talk about it tonight," Ry said, "but I know you were telling your friends about what happened to us." Ry felt Charlie's body tense up. "I know it's hard for you. I'm never going to ask you what happened, but I want you to know that you can talk to me about anything, okay? No matter how much it might hurt." "I know," Charlie said, sadly. "I don't want you to hurt, though." "You won't hurt me, Charlie. You could never hurt me." Ry kissed Charlie's head and held him tight, trying not to cry. Ry never understood how Billy couldn't get along with his half-brother. Charlie was one of the sweetest boys he'd ever met. He never went out of his way to cause anyone pain or problems. "I love you, Charlie." "I love you, too," Charlie said, closing his eyes. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 26***
