Chapter 4 "Come on, Sticks, hurry up," Mr. Tangetti called out. Ry had fallen behind, having to carry his backpack, tent and sleeping bag--some of which was hanging from his neck--while also having to maneuver the rough terrain with his elbow crutch. He was sweating and already hating the experience. Ry loved camping, but Rick and his brothers often helped him, but Amanda's dad demanded that Ry "carry his own weight." "Yeah, Sticks, move it!" said Amanda's younger brother. He sneered and made a swiping movement with his hand as if he was going to grab Ry's crutch. "Johnny, knock it off!" Amanda yelled at the 10-year-old. To Ry she said, "Brothers, am I right?" "Yeah," Ry gasped. He didn't want to go on the trip, but Amanda was relentless. She didn't like being told no, and Ry didn't have the energy most days to fight with her. Plus, she was the only one who seemed interested in dating him. They finally made it to the camp spot. It was a primitive campsite near a river. Ry looked around and found a spot under a tree to drop his gear. He was out of breath and felt dehydrated. The river looked inviting, though he wasn't sure how well he could swim in it. His physical therapy had started using a pool a few months prior, and he was barely able to stand still. Amanda set her belongings down next to Ry and handed him a bottle of water, which he welcomed. "So," Amanda said. "I was thinking that, after we get everything set up, we could go for a walk." "I don't know," Ry said. "My feet and legs hurt already, so I'm not sure I can walk any more today." "It wouldn't be that far," she said, pouting a little. "There's a nice, secluded beach just around the bend. We could get away from my parents and brothers for a few minutes and...." Amanda put her hand on Ry's knee and moved it up his leg towards his groin, even though her mom was less than 10 feet away. Ry gave a heavy sigh. Amanda had been pressuring Ry to have sex. It started almost immediately after they started dating. Ry hadn't been able to get an erection since his accident, which frustrated him. It didn't help that Amanda was adding pressure, even going so far as to get physically intimate with him. He always turned her down, but Amanda didn't like being told no. "I'll think about it," Ry said, grabbing his tent. The tent took longer than normal to set up. Rick had bought Ry a tent designed for disabled kids, so Ry could pitch the tent himself. Amanda's brothers took it upon themselves to "help" by secreting away the poles and rain fly. Ry got so mad at one point, he snapped at her youngest brother, Tyler. Amanda's mother heard what Ry said and told him off for being mad at the 5-year-old. She ignored what he said in his defense. Ry checked his phone and saw he had no service. It had only been three hours and he was ready to leave. He wondered how far he'd have to walk to get a signal. Rick was in Texas with Brenda, so he wasn't available. His next choice was to call Will, Billy's biological father, but he wasn't sure if Will would come to get him. That only left Justin. Ry felt disgusted with himself for even thinking about Billy's boyfriend as an option. Lunch was a simple affair of sandwiches and potato salad. Johnny and Tyler thought it would be funny to throw dirt at Ry's plate. Amanda, again, told her brothers to stop, which was ignored by the parents. Ry recognized how lucky he was to have Rick and Will as parental figures. His birth parents were very neglectful and abusive, but they wouldn't have let him act the way Amanda's siblings were behaving. Despite the lush, forest canopy, the heat was becoming too much. Amanda's father and brothers went to the river to go swimming, and Ry decided that maybe going away with Amanda was the best option. The hike wasn't too bad, Ry thought. It was mostly flat and well-worn. The beach Amanda took him to was a nice, sandy stretch of land along a calm looking part of the river. There was a soft, cool breeze that felt nice. Ry considered moving his camping gear to the spot. Amanda removed her shirt and shorts. Underneath, she had on a pink, string bikini. She laid out two towels next to each other. Ry awkwardly sat down and took off his socks and shoes. He had a lot of feeling in his feet and legs but the muscles in his right leg weren't very cooperative. He had spent four years in physical therapy and had a couple surgeries to get back the mobility he had, so he felt lucky to be able to walk as much as he could. Sometimes, like the camping trip, he wished he was still in a wheelchair, so he'd have an excuse to not participate in certain activities. He imagined Amanda's father calling him wheels and making nasty remarks about how Ry had it easy pushing himself around. "See, I told you it was nice," Amanda said, leaning in and kissing Ry. Ry kissed his girlfriend and then said, "Yeah, it really is. The best part is your family being somewhere else. No offense," Ry added quickly. "None taken," she said. "They're annoying." "My brothers can be annoying too." "Not as annoying as mine. Charlie is sweet and Billy has been nice, too." Ry removed his shirt, folded it into a pillow and laid down. "I guess. Charlie has his moments, and Billy has been a dick for a few years." "Maybe they're jealous because you got a hot girlfriend?" Amanda said, kissing Ry again and laying her head on his chest. Ry chuckled and said, "I don't think Charlie has discovered girls yet, and you know Billy is gay. You met his boyfriend earlier." "So?" Amanda laughed, running her hand through his chest hair. "Maybe Billy hasn't met the right girl?" "It doesn't work that way," Ry said, taking her hand in his. Amanda turned her head up and looked Ry in the eyes and said, "It worked for you." "That was just a phase when I was in middle school," Ry said. He kissed Amanda and added, "But, yeah, I met the right girl for sure." Amanda smiled and they went back to kissing for several long minutes. She pulled away and asked, "Why don't you ever talk about your ex?" "What are you talking about?" Ry asked. "You know, the guy you had sex with. You never talk about him." "There's nothing to talk about," Ry said evasively. "Come on," she said, "there has to be a story. You said that you two had some classes together and you were best friends, so what happened?" Ry shifted awkwardly and said, "Things ended after my family moved. We had a falling out and couldn't go back. It's not a big deal. He's had a few boyfriends since then, and I have you." "So, you still talk to him?" Amanda asked. Ry rolled his eyes and said, "Yes, but there's no need to be jealous. I made it clear that we're only friends and nothing more." "I'm not jealous," Amanda said, kissing Ry once more. "I was hoping for a threesome." Ry laughed and said, "Were you now?" "Two boys together sounds pretty hot." "Maybe you could help him give me a blow job?" Ry mocked as he kissed her again. "Promise?" She asked. Ry laughed again, and the two continued to kiss until they were interrupted by Johnny and Tyler dumping a bucket of river water on them. Amanda screamed while Ry gasped and sputtered. Mr. Tangetti walked up behind them and became upset at the way the couple had been dressed and "canoodling." Amanda yelled at her dad about how she was 15-years-old and old enough to make her own choices, as Ry put his shirt and shoes back on, while fighting off her brothers, who tried throwing his crutch into the river. Back at the camp, everyone was quiet. Amanda was silently furious with her father. Ry just wanted to go home. Dinner was basic: Roasted hot dogs and more potato salad. After dinner everyone just sat around the campfire. Ry took out a book. Amanda played a game on her phone, while the rest of her family roasted marshmallows. "I hope you're ready for tomorrow, Sticks." Mr. Tangetti said. "What's tomorrow?" Ry asked, looking over the top of his book. "Didn't Amanda tell you? We're going on a ten mile hike first thing in the morning." "Cool," Ry said, briefly raising his eyebrows before going back to his book. Annoyed that his comment didn't achieve the effect he wanted, Mr. Tangetti continued, "So I hope you can get enough rest. We're leaving just after sunrise." Ry, fed up with the day and company, put down his book. He smiled to himself and chuckled a little. Still smiling, he looked at Amanda's father dead in the eyes and said, "So, you expect me, a cripple, to walk ten miles, on what I'm guessing is steep, uneven ground, probably along a gnarly cliff or twenty. For what? Your own, personal amusement?" In a mocking voice, Ry added, "Oh look! I knew the gimp couldn't get up the mountain. Come on, Sticks! You lazy, little, broken fucker! Get your ass in gear. You're making the rest of us look bad!" Ry saw the burning anger in Mr. Tangetti's eyes, which Ry relished, so he continued, "How about you take me back to town first? I'm really tired of this bullshit anyway. Before my father put me in a comma, I would've kicked your ass by now, and knocked your sons out for good measure, so the fact that I've quietly put up with your shit this long is a testament to my patience and dedication to your daughter. Up until this point, I respected you and your family, while you have done nothing but insult, ridicule and attempted to humiliate me. So, you all can fuck right off. I'll have my bags packed and ready to leave before your hike." To Amanda, who looked even more in love than before, he said, "I'm sorry for my behavior, but I'm even more sorry that you have to put up with these pieces of shit for another three years." With that, he got up and went to his tent. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 5***
