Chapter 16 "Ow, ow, ow," Kyle cried out as the school nurse dabbed at his bloody nose. A teacher had found him crying in a nearby bathroom. Kyle didn't want to go to the nurse's office, but the teacher didn't leave him much choice. "I don't think it's broken, but you'll still have bruises under your eyes for a few days," the nurse said, tossing a blood soaked paper towel. "You probably should still see a doctor just to make sure nothing is broken, though." She pulled two cotton balls from a jar and started to insert them in Kyle's nose. He cried out in pain, but the nurse ignored him. "There, that should do until your parents get here." "Parent?!" He wasn't sure if he misheard. "Yes, parents. It's school policy to inform a parent or guardian when a student has been in a fight." Panic set in, and Kyle retorted, "I wasn't in a fight." "Then how did you nearly break your nose?" The nurse said, looking unconvinced. "I wasn't paying attention and ran into a door." "Uh huh. I see." The nurse pulled out a file and took down some notes. Kyle could read what was being written. "So, what were you doing that was distracting you?" "I was reading a book." "Which book?" Kyle froze. He knew he was caught. The nurse wrote some more and directed him to a small, dark room with a few beds in it. He was told to lay down until someone came for him. Images of his mother storming the school like some sort of cartoon character flashed in his head. He was certain he'd be able to hear her yells of outrage from the parking lot. How did this day go so wrong, so quickly, he thought. There was no clock in the room, so he had no idea what time it was, when the nurse returned. "You parent is here to get you." Kyle got up, grabbed his bag and jacket, and made his way out of the nurse's office. "You need to go to the Vice Principal's office," the nurse added. "Am I in trouble?" "That's not my field. I just fix the wounds." She gave Kyle directions through the admin building to his destination. He maneuvered through a few halls before coming into the Main Office. The office assistant told him to wait to be called. They were the only two in the office. The bell rang, signaling the end of first period. Kyle could see a throng of students moving around, but he didn't see Cody, Ry or anyone else he recognized, not even his mother. The second bell rang, indicating the start of second period, when a door opened, and a man, about 35, poked his head out and called for Kyle to come in. The boy stood, grabbed his bag and walked into the office. It was small, with a desk, book shelf, and three chairs (one behind the desk and two in front). In one of those chairs sat Rick, who was wearing his work clothes. Rick's face was neutral until he got a good look at Kyle's. His eyes widened with horror. The older man stood and rushed to his son. "Are you alright? Who did this? How did this happen?" "How about we have a seat and talk about this," the Vice Principal asked rhetorically. He closed the door, and everyone took a seat. "Hello, Kyle, my name is Mr. Nader, and I'm your Vice Principal." Kyle said hi, and Mr. Nader continued, "I got Mrs. Williams' report, and she said that you said you weren't in a fight; however, she believes that you were. Mind tell us what happened?" Kyle took a few, deep breaths to steady himself and to think. He didn't want to tell-on Cody. Not because Cody didn't deserve to get in trouble, but he didn't want Cody or his friends to beat him up again. However, he also knew that he couldn't just make something up, especially after failing to do so with the nurse. He just dropped his head and kept silent. "It's okay, Buddy," Rick tenderly muttered, taking Kyle's hand and giving it a little squeeze. "You can tell us what happened. You're not in trouble." At the last statement, Mr. Nader cleared his throat. Kyle wasn't sure if it was coincidence or something else. Mr. Nader interjected, "Kyle, we take fighting very seriously at this school. We want to have a safe and friendly environment where every student can come and learn without fear of violence. In order for me to assure that, I need to know what's going on in this school. Did you get into a fight?" Kyle paused for a few seconds and whispered, "Yes." "Okay, who did you get into a fight with?" Kyle sat in silence once again, conflict rushing through him like a river. "It's okay to say something," Rick said. Kyle took another deep, stuttering breath and said, "Cody Morrow." "Cody Morrow?" Mr. Nader said, "Mr. Morrow's son?" "Yes," Kyle replied, as tears started to stream down his face. Mr. Nader grabbed his phone and told the office assistant to summon Cody Morrow and Mr. Morrow to his office. "Why would he do this?" Rick whispered. Kyle shrugged and continued to cry. About five minutes later, Cody entered the Main Office lobby and took a seat. He looked around, and when he saw Kyle, Cody's face flashed from shock, to fear, to loathing. Rick, who hadn't noticed Cody, asked, "So, what's going to happen now?" "Well," Mr. Nader said, "I'm going to talk to Cody and get his side of things. Once I get that, I'll make my decision and what kind of punishment will be handed out." Everyone sat in relative silence until the bell rang declaring the end of second period. About 2 minutes later, Mr. Morrow entered the office, saw his son and went to him. Kyle couldn't hear what was being said, but at one point, Cody looked and pointed at Kyle. Mr. Nader got up, left the room, and brought the Morrows into another room. "Kyle, what's really going on?" Rick asked, looking more scared than concerned. Kyle burst into tears and told Rick everything that had happened. Rick hugged his son and told him not to worry. The office door opened, and Mr. Nader and the Morrows entered. Upon closing the door, Mr. Nader sat behind his desk, cleared his throat, and said, "After talking with Cody and his father, along with what Kyle has said, I've decided to give Kyle in-school suspension for a day." His tone was even, almost emotionless. "What?!" Rick said, completely taken aback. "And what about Cody?" "What about him?" Mr. Nader asked earnestly. "Isn't he being suspended for punching Kyle?" "According to Cody, Kyle started it." "No I didn't!" Kyle protested. "Cody walked up to me, punched me and called me a faggot." There was a brief silence that held the statement, then Mr. Nader said, "According to Cody, who has witnesses, you called him that word and swung at him, and he defended himself." Sadness turned to anger in an instant. "YOU LIAR!" Kyle jumped to his feet, clenching his teeth. "YOU HIT ME! YOU CALLED ME THAT NAME!" His whole body shook with rage. Mr. Morrow stepped between Kyle and his son. Cody gave the slightest of grins before accepting the human shield. "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO YOU! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?" Kyle collapsed in his chair, ravaged with emotions. Rick stood and said to the Vice Principle, "This is total fucking bullshit. You know this is fucking bullshit." He turned to Mr. Morrow and added, "Your kid hit my kid, and you're just going to stand there saying nothing? You've known Kyle since he was a little kid. You know he doesn't fight, so why in the fuck aren't you saying anything?" Mr. Morrow just stood in silence, his arm still out, guarding his son. Frustrated and anger, Rick turned back to Mr. Nader. "How about you just give him out of school suspension? I'm going to take him to the doctor, and if he has a broken nose, I'm going to call a lawyer." "There's no need for lawyers," Mr. Nader said. "Maybe, maybe not, but I'm not putting up with this bullshit. Come on Kyle, we're going home." Kyle stood and moved towards the door, as he passed the Morrows, he could hear Cody mumble "Faggot." Kyle burst into tears again. Rick stood in the doorway, and said to Mr. Morrow, "You keep your kid away from mine. Is that understood?" Mr. Morrow looked scared and nodded. Rick helped Kyle into his truck, and slammed the door. After slamming his own door, he drove Kyle to the nearest hospital. They sat in the ER waiting to be seen. During Kyle's exam, the nurses and doctor asked what had happened, and Kyle retold his story. He was given an x-ray, which said his nose wasn't broken. While waiting to be discharged, Detective Dunham came. "Hi, Kyle. I heard what had happened. Is everything alright?" "No," Kyle muttered. He was drained from everything. "Who told you?" "The hospital had to report what happened, and because of the investigation, I was contacted." "Oh." "Were you bullied because of the investigation?" "No." "It was a former friend of his," Rick interjected. "They used to be best friends, had a falling out, and now, the boy has decided to bully him." "I'm sorry to hear that." the detective said. "What's the boy's name?" Before Kyle said anything, Rick said, "Cody Morrow. His dad is a teacher at the school." She only nodded her acknowledgment. "Would you like to press charges? I don't know what can be done, but that's up to the district attorney." Rick thought about it for a minute then said, "I'm not sure. I need to talk to my wife and see what she has to say." "Okay, well, if there's anything I can do, please let me know," and the detective left. Rick and Kyle came home to an empty house. It would be hours before Ronda and Charlie would be home. Rick told Kyle to change his clothes, while he made lunch. Father and son ate sandwiches and watched whatever Kyle wanted. Kyle, at first sat far from his step-father, but Rick pulled him next to him, and wrapped his arm around his boy. "I love you, Buddy." Rick kissed his son on the top of his head. "Why did Cody hit me?" "I don't know, Buddy. I don't know." "I wish I wasn't gay." Rick looked down at Kyle, cupped the boys face in his hand and said, "Never think that. You are an amazing, wonderful guy. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, nor you being gay. Apparently, Cody can't handle what you two did, and that's his problem. You are perfect just the way you are." Rick held his son's gaze, then he leaned in and kissed Kyle on the lips. Kyle melted as his dad's mouth touched his. It was the first intimate moment they had had in a long time. Kyle took a chance, parted his lips and knocked on Rick's mouth with his own tongue. Rick opened his mouth, inviting Kyle inside. They kissed for a long while. "I love you, Kyle." "I love you, too, Dad."
