Chapter 19 Once showered and dressed, Rick and Kyle went about their day together. Their first stop was Kyle's school. He sat in Rick's truck, while Rick went to get his homework. The first bell rang, and Kyle could see students leaving their classes and making their way to the next. He saw Ry walking nearby. Kyle rolled down the window and called out his friend. Ry's head snapped up and started to look around. He saw Kyle in the truck and made his way over. "What are you doing?" Ry called, once he got close enough, he stopped dead in his tracks. "What the fuck happened?" Kyle briefly forgot about his bruises. "It's kind of a long story." He told Ry everything that happened after Homeroom the day before. Ry's face turned red with anger. Kyle had seen that look before just before he beat up Dan. "That fucking, piece of shit!" Ry said, seething. "I'm going to kick his fucking ass!" "Please don't!" Kyle cried out. "Why not? He fucking deserve it." "I know, but I don't want any more trouble, and I don't want you to get in trouble, either." "I don't care if I get in trouble. What the worse they're gonna do? Suspend me? I don't care about that." "I care about that. I don't want to be responsible for you getting in trouble." "You wouldn't be responsible." "Yeah, I would. I told you what happened, and if I kept my mouth shut, you wouldn't know it was Cody." Ry still looked pissed, but he relented to Kyle. The two friends talked about how school was going for Ry and what Kyle was going to be doing with his day off. Rick came back just as the next bell rang. "Friend of yours?" Rick asked Kyle. Kyle gave introductions and the other two exchanged pleasantries. Kyle then asked, "Is it okay if Ry comes over after school?" "I don't see why not. That's provided he's not in trouble for being late to class." Ry shrugged. "My parents don't really care, but I should get going," the boy hurried away. After Rick and Kyle left the parking lot, Rick asked, "Is he your boyfriend?" Kyle turned very red. Rick thought his son's ruddy cheeks and purple eyes were cute, and he gave a little chuckle at Kyle's embarrassment. "No, he's not my boyfriend. He's straight." "Do you want him to be your boyfriend?" "I don't know. I never thought about it." Kyle signed and added, "Even if I want him to be, he's straight and wouldn't want to date me, so...." Rick nodded in agreement and acknowledgment. He reached over and took a hold of Kyle's hand, giving it a little squeeze. Kyle squeezed back, happy to be with Rick. He then got a devilish grin on his face and said, "Besides, I know who I'd want to have as a boyfriend." "Oh yeah, who?" "You, silly. I would want you as my boyfriend." Rick felt flattered, and he also felt sad, because he knew that it probably wouldn't happen. As if reading Rick's thoughts, Kyle went on, "But you're with Mom, so you would want to be my boyfriend, anyway." "It's not that I wouldn't want to be your boyfriend, and you're right, I'm married to your mother, but I'm also not sure how everyone else would take the news that I'm in a relationship with my son." "But I'm not your son, not really." "True, but I've been your dad since you were very little, so even though we're not blood related, you're still my son, and everyone sees you as my son; plus, you're Charlie's brother and I am his dad, so imagine how confusing that would be for him." Kyle never thought of it that way. He wasn't upset with Rick for not wanting to be boyfriends (in fact, Rick seemed more upset about it), but he never thought about how other people might react to their relationship. They drove to the other side of town for breakfast, holding hands, unless Rick needed it to drive. Kyle ordered his usual pile of eggs, sausage and hashbrowns. Rick ordered an omelet and coffee. They ate and discussed what they were going to do for the rest of the day. Once finished, they made their way to one of the local movie theaters. It took some convincing, but Rick agreed to take Kyle to see the newest horror movie. Normally, Kyle wasn't allowed to watch scary movies, because of nightmares, but Rick did say that they'd do whatever Kyle wanted. They sat in the back of the theater, despite nobody else being in their. Kyle pushed up the arm rest between him and Rick, and wrapped his arms around stepdad's arm. The movie was full of jump-scares, and Rick, who loved these kinds of movies, could see them coming a mile away. Eventually, he put his arm around Kyle's shoulders. Kyle snuggled up to Rick, who almost felt bad for what he was about to do. At the first jump-scare, he poked Kyle in the ribs, causing the boy to scream very loudly. Rick laughed hard, and Kyle, who was trying not to laugh, punched Rick in the leg. After a few more moments like this, Rick stopped, because Kyle was starting to get really mad and upset. Kyle calmed down after Rick kissed him on the top of the head and apologized, though there was still a hint of giggles to it. After the movie, the pair wandered through the mall and found a comic book store. They were greeted by a woman around Rick's age. She was friendly enough without being pushy. She helped Kyle find the latest superhero comic, and showed him where the gaming books were. Rick looked around the shop. It was a mix of geek and quasi-hippy culture. He was never into anything like this as a kid, but he wasn't about to tell his son that he couldn't be who he was. The shop clerk and Kyle seemed to be having a private conversation, while looking through various books. They were there for about an hour; eventually, Rick reminded Kyle of the time, so they could leave. Kyle was conflicted about what he wanted to buy, so Rick told him that he could have the comic, the book and a couple decks of cards for a popular game. The total wasn't cheap, but the clerk gave them a discount. She hugged Kyle before they left. On the way back to the truck, Rick asked, "So what was that all about?" "What?" "The hug. Why did she hug you?" "Oh that," Kyle blushed a bit. "She asked about my eyes, and I told her what happened. She told me that she went through the same thing in school, but for liking girls and boys. Her name is Connie. She said that kids are jerks and that things will get better." Kyle's blush grew deeper. "She also said that she knew I was loved, because you stood up for me and brought me to her store." Rick wrapped his arm around Kyle's shoulders and gave him a hug. "I do love you, Kyle. I love you a lot." "I know, and I love you, too." They ate lunch at Kyle's favorite fast food restaurant. Normally, he and Charlie weren't allowed to eat at these places, but Rick was a man of his word...and made Kyle promise not to tell Ronda. They had a few hours to kill before Ronda and Charlie got home, so they drove around town, looking at the places Rick had lived as a kid. He and his parents moved around a lot. His own father was an alcoholic, who couldn't hold down a job. His mother was a nice woman, but she had mental health issues. Rick's father died because of his drinking when Rick was seventeen, and his mother lived in a nursing home. Rick had a younger brother named Ronnie, who lived out of state, and the two didn't speak to each other. Rick pulled the truck over. They were on a hill overlooking the city. There was a nearby park that was practically empty. Rick lifted the console and pulled Kyle next to him. The radio was playing a sappy love song, and the moment seemed almost perfect. Rick ran his fingers through the 12-year-old's hair, and he soon heard the soft sounds of Kyle's snoring. He wished he could freeze time or create an alternate reality where he and Kyle could be together. He still loved Ronda, but his heart was quickly belonging to Kyle. He and wife were fighting more than they ever had, and it was usually around how best to protect Kyle. It always comes back to Kyle, Rick thought. "Did you have fun?" Ronda asked as Kyle and Rick entered the house. Kyle gave a basic rundown of the day, avoiding the bits that would get Rick in hot water. Charlie was rather jealous, but changed his tune when Kyle gave him the comic book. "We have great kids," Ronda said, leaning against her husband. "We sure do," Rick said, wrapping his arms around her. There was a knock at the door, and Kyle ran to get it. It was Ry. The boys went to Kyle's room, where they admired the gaming book. It was a new game where everyone got to play as vampires. They took turns picking through the tome, reading what seemed interesting without actually reading the system. Kyle told Ry about the store, and Ry said that he knew of it, since that's one of his favorite places. Ry was asked to stay for dinner, which he accepted. Around 4:30, Ronda knocked on Kyle's door. "I hate to bother you guys, but Kyle, could you come to the living room, please?" She had a very serious look on her face. "What is it? Am I in trouble?" "No, Sweetie. Detective Dunham is here and needs to talk to you." Kyle looked drained instantly. He was tired of answering her questions. Ry got up, took Kyle by the hand, and said, "Come on. I'll go with you." Kyle got up, and they left with Ronda. They entered the living room to find Detective Dunham with Rick. "Hi, Kyle. Glad to see that you're up and moving." "Thanks." "Who's this?" "This is my friend, Ry." The Detective looked quizzically at the boy then said, "The same Ry who attacked Daniel Clark?" "Yep," Ry said, unbothered by the question. "Nice to finally meet you," she said, shaking Ry's hand. She turned to Kyle and asked, "Did your dad tell you that I was here earlier?" "Yeah, he did. Am I in trouble?" "No," She smiled. It wasn't an assuring one. "I need your help, and this time, it's really important." Kyle sat between his parents, Ry sat in another chair, Charlie was told to go to his room, and the detective sat in her usual chair. He didn't like how commonplace this situation was becoming. The detective removed her small notepad, flipped through a couple pages, and said, "I have some unfortunate news to share with you. Mr. Clark has been released on bond." Kyle could feel his parents tense up, but he wasn't sure what she meant. Seeing his confusion, she said, "Mr. Clark is no longer in jail. He was released pending trial." Kyle was stunned. "How? I-- I-- I--." Panic was setting in. His chest felt heavy; it was hard to breathe. Rick pulled Kyle towards him, but it was only a slight comfort. "I know this is shocking, but that's how the law works. He managed to get the money to make bail. He will be released from jail within the next couple of hours. He will be on house arrest, given an GPS tracker, and won't be allowed to leave his house. He'll also be instructed to have no contact with Kyle or the rest of his family." She looked over at Ry and added, "And I can ask that he doesn't have any contact with you and your family if you want?" Ry shook his head and replied, "I doubt he wants a Round Two." Detective Dunham grinned. "How is this even possible?" Ronda asked. "As I said, 'That's how the law works'. He has a right to bail if he can afford it. Right now, we only have Kyle's statement. We're also having a hard time identifying the victims, and the ones we have found won't give a statement." "And what about the videos? That alone should be enough to put him away for the rest of his life!" "I understand your anger and frustration. Trust me, I understand, but what I need are more names, and I'm hoping that Kyle can help me out." The detective removed the folder with pictures of Dan's other victims and passed it to him. "Please, Kyle, if there's anyone else in there that you know, it would really help if you gave me their names." Kyle opened the binder and thumbed through the photos. Some appeared to be more enhanced than before. There were only a couple that he could identify, and then he came to the last photo. He began to shake. The first time he looked at that pic, he didn't want to say anything because he couldn't believe who he was looking at; however, things had changed, people had changed, he had changed. "It's okay, Kyle," Rick whispered. "Go ahead and tell her." Kyle looked at Ry, took a deep breath, and said, "Cody Morrow." ***Chapter 20 Coming Soon***
