Chapter 20 "Tomorrow is gonna suck," Kyle said. "Yeah, it probably will," Ry agreed. After Detective Dunham left, Ry asked if he could stay the night. Ronda and Rick said yes, though they were still in shock and arguing over the revelation. Ry's parents, of course, didn't care. Both boys were in bed, in their usual cuddling position. Ry didn't say a word about the interview, and only engaged when Kyle brought it up. Kyle was hyper emotional and conflicted. He went from bouts of laughter to full-blown balling. Ry did the best he could to comfort his friend, but Kyle at times was inconsolable. Kyle never wanted to say it was Cody he recognized, but after he was attacked, hatred roiled within and he couldn't justify keeping it secret any further; however, feelings of guilt and betrayal kept creeping in, making him think that he told Cody's secret without his permission. Ry hugged Kyle, then said, "I'm going to walk you to your classes tomorrow." "You can't do that," Kyle said, returning the hug. "You'll be late to your classes and will get detention." "I don't care, and frankly, my parents won't care, either. It's not a big deal." "But I don't want you to get in trouble because of me." "You're my friend, and I don't let my friends get hurt. I think I proved that by kicking that dude's ass, you know." Kyle nodded. As much as he wanted to forget that day, the images of Ry's ass-kicking were still pretty impressive. "I wish I could fight like you," Kyle said. "I can teach you if you want?" "Yeah? Are you sure?" "Um, yeah, I'm pretty sure. You wouldn't be my first student." "Really? But you're twelve?" "So? I turn thirteen in April." "Still. You're not old enough to be a teacher." Ry chuckled. "Neither was my brother when he taught me, but I learned fast and have taught others a few things. I can't make you a kung fu master, but I can teach you how to defend yourself and fight back. Cody won't mess you again." Kyle loved the idea. While they slept, Kyle had dreams of doing near-impossible flips and kicks, taking out faceless enemies and bullies. At one point, he kicked Ry in the butt. He woke up to Ry slapping him. The boys laughed about it before resuming cuddles and sleep. The next day, Ronda took Ry and Kyle to school. Ronda got out of the car with them. Kyle looked scandalized as she made her way to the office. "Don't worry," she said a little too sweetly, "I'm just going to have a word with your vice principal. You better get to Homeroom before you're late." However, Kyle did worry. Ronda's temper was legendary, and he was worried that she might go to jail after sending Mr. Nader to the hospital. Kyle and Ry walked into Homeroom and noticed that Mr. Morrow wasn't there. Instead, they had a substitute, who said that Mr. Morrow was out sick and should return the next day. They shared a look and took their seats. As Ry had promised, he escorted Kyle to all of his classes. At lunch, they noticed that Cody was nowhere to be seen. After speculating about Cody's whereabouts, and deciding that he was taken to jail for beating up Kyle, they talk about their day with less anxiety. Just before school was over, Kyle was told to go to Mr. Nader's office. Kyle gathered his things and slowly walked towards the Main Office. Mr. Nader was in the lobby as Kyle walked in. He closed the door to his office behind them, and told Kyle to sit in a chair. Kyle took a seat. "I had a very interesting conversation with your mother this morning," the vice principal said. Kyle just sat waiting for a question to be asked. Mr. Nader continued, "She seems to be under the impression that Cody Morrow was the one who attacked you, and that you didn't do anything to provoke it." Again, Kyle was quiet. Anger was starting to rise within him. "Your mother made it very clear that should anything else happen to you, that she would personally come here and settle things 'her way', as she put it." Mr. Nader paused. He could tell that he was getting to Kyle. The boy's fists were starting to clench. "With all that said," Mr. Nader continued, "I have zero tolerance for bullying in this school, regardless of who is doing the bullying." The man's eyes slightly narrowed, and Kyle's anger was swiftly turning into contained rage. "So, let me make something abundantly clear, young man. If I hear so much as a word about you, I'm going to suspend you again, and this time, you'll do your suspension in school. Do you understand what I'm saying?" Kyle was so full of hate that he began to tear up. Mistaking the boy's rage as weakness, Mr. Nader ordered Kyle to leave. "THAT'S FUCKING BULLSHIT!" Ry yelled. Kyle didn't return to class, but waited for Ry outside of his last class. Ry could tell Kyle was really upset, but Kyle held out till they got to Ry's. "THAT'S TOTAL FUCKING BULLSHIT!" "I know," Kyle said through gritted teeth. His jaw hadn't unclinched and was starting to hurt. "He's a fucking, piece of shit." "I know." "What are you going to do?" "I don't know. If I tell my parents, my mom will only make things worse. She always makes things worse." "Isn't there anyone else we can tell?" "I don't know!" Kyle was overwhelmed and started to cry again. He collapsed onto Ry's bed, and Ry held Kyle until his friend got everything out of his system. "Why does this shit keep happening to me? What did I do that was so wrong?" Ry just hugged and held Kyle. He had no idea what else he could do. If he was honest with himself, he really wanted to kick Nader's ass, then kick Cody's ass for starting all of this. He never understood why Cody was being an dick over having sex with Kyle. If he were gay, he'd want to be boyfriends with Kyle, but unfortunately, nature made him how he was. In the end, the boys decided to just let it go until they could figure something else out. The next three weeks were the same. Cody had returned and avoided Kyle like he had the plague, and Kyle was very thankful. Ry still escorted Kyle to his classes, since he didn't trust Cody. Kyle also hadn't heard from Mr. Nader, and he and Ry plotted several pranks to get back their vice principal. Ry also taught Kyle some basic, self-defense, martial arts moves. Kyle wasn't a quick learner, but he tried his best. Mr. Morrow, for his part, avoided any conversations with Kyle and even refused to be alone with him. "So," Rick said to Kyle at dinner one night, "Your birthday is coming up. Is there anything special you want?" Kyle was so busy with school, gaming and training that he didn't even think about his birthday. He gave it some thought and said, "Can I have a party?" He usually wasn't one for social gatherings, but he thought it might be nice to have Ry and the others over. "Of course, Sweetie," Ronda said. "Do you want a big or small party?" "A small one. I'm going to invite Ry, Steve, Donny, Jamie and Danny. If it's okay, can they stay the night, too?" "I don't see why not," Rick said, looking questioningly at his wife. Both shrugged and agreed. "Cool, thanks." It was the happiest he had been in a long time. "Can we watch scary movies?" He knew he was testing his luck, and was shot down quickly. The party was held on Saturday the following week. Kyle's birthday was on Sunday, so it made sense to have everyone over the night before. Kyle's room wasn't nearly as big as Ry's so everyone was crammed in corners and in tight spots. As usual, Kyle and Ry took the bed. Kyle decided that he'd run his vampire game that he had been working on with Ry. Around 8pm, they took a break to have cake and eat dinner. Despite Kyle's request, Ronda heavily decorated the kitchen and living room. Just before 8:30pm, there was a knock at the door. Rick got up from the table and answered. Everyone could hear him swearing, so Ronda got up to see what was going on...quickly followed by everyone else. "What the hell is he doing here?!" Charlie exclaimed. Kyle rounded the corner to could barely see Mr. Morrow having a very heated discussion with Rick, and between them was Cody, who was holding a wrapped present. He was looking down at the present, and Kyle could make out a few tears dropping on the box. His heart broke for him. Kyle passed everyone to Cody. "What are you doing here?" Kyle asked. "It's your birthday, isn't it?" Cody replied, trying to choke back his feelings. "Yeah, it is...well, tomorrow, technically, but yeah." "We haven't spent our birthdays apart since kindergarten." "Yeah, but you have been a fucking jerk." "I know." "If that's all you've got to say--" Kyle turned to walk away." "--I'm really sorry, Kyle!" Cody dropped the box, which landed with a hard thud, and pulled Kyle in a bone-crushing hug. Kyle held Cody as his friend hard sobbed. Finally aware of the situation before them, Rick and Mr. Morrow stopped yelling and looked at their boys. Ronda ushered everyone back inside. Still holding a crying Cody, Kyle asked, "Can he stay, too?" He almost regretted it, as Cody started crying harder. I'm definitely going to need a dry shirt, he thought. After some reluctance from the adults, they all agreed that Cody could stay. During the rest of dinner, tension was still thick in the air, and it didn't escape his notice that both Charlie and Ry were giving Cody many dirty looks. At one point, Cody went to the sink, followed by Charlie, who kicked the older boy, and said, "If you ever hurt my brother again, I'm going to kick your ass, got it?!" Charlie was quickly sent to his, but not before getting a quick fist-bump from Ry. The game was made more difficult with the addition of an extra body. Cody had never played before, and as far as the other group members were concerned, he was as unwelcome as a troll in a cave. Cody was expecting to sit on the bed next to Kyle; however, Ry quickly claimed his spot, which left Cody in the furthest corner away from the bed. Kyle felt a little bad, but remembering that the bruised Cody left on his face had only just gone away, he didn't feel bad enough to ask Ry to move over. They gamed for most of the night, and only stopped when Ronda ordered them all to bed. Kyle and Ry cuddled, as per usual. Ry put his head on Kyle's chest and stared at Cody, as if daring him to say or do something. Cody wasn't sure if Ry could see his face, but he glared back in kind. The next day, after breakfast, Steve, Jamie, Donny and Danny left before noon. Ry reluctantly left around 1pm, but not before shooting Cody a dirty look and assuring Kyle that, if needed, he'd come back and kick Cody's ass. "Thanks, but I think I got it," Kyle sheepishly said. Ry hugged Kyle tightly, which was gladly returned, and he left. Kyle and Cody sat in an awkward silence. They hadn't been alone together since the morning Cody had asked Kyle to leave his house. "Why did you tell me to leave?" Kyle said in a small voice. Even though he was happy to see Cody, there was still a lot of hurt in him. "I dunno," Cody said. He stared at the floor, absentmindedly picking at his toes. "I didn't know how I felt about what he did." "Didn't you like it?" "Yeah, I did...I liked it a lot and it scared me." "Why?" "I dunno," Cody's voice had a hint of desperation to it. "I don't know if I like boys or not. I like girls. I really like girls, and if I like boys, then I think I can't like girls, too." "What? Why?" Kyle was definitely confused. "'Cause if you're gay, you only boys, right?" "Well, yeah, but--" "So, if I like boys, I'm gay, and if I'm gay, I can't like girls, too?" Cody's tone came off as annoyed and very matter-of-fact, as if he couldn't comprehend why Kyle was being so obtuse. Kyle laughed, which visibly annoyed Cody. Not wanting to have another fight, Kyle said, "You can like both boys and girls, Cody." "No you can't," Cody said in the same tone. "Being gay means you only like boys." "Yeah, being gay does mean that, but if you like both, you're not gay." "Well, I'm not straight!" "No, you're bisexual!" Cody looked very confused and said, "What's that?" Kyle rolled his eyes out of reflex. "It's when you like boys and girls. It's like being both gay and straight at the same time." Cody's face contorted like the world he lived in made absolutely no sense. Kyle said he couldn't explain it any better than he just did. Eventually, Cody just gave up trying to figure it out. Deciding to stay on this line of conversation, Kyle pressed on. "So, why did you hit me?" "I'm really sorry about that," Cody managed to croak out, as tears instantly welled in his eyes. "I was showing off, and I wasn't thinking. I let everything get to me, and I just threw the punch." Kyle motioned for Cody to come to him on the bed. Cody got up and practically ran to Kyle's side. Kyle pulled Cody into a hug and held him. "I'm sorry I called you a faggot, too. I'm sorry for everything." "It's okay," Kyle whispered, feeling his own tears start to fall. "I forgive you." "How?" Cody said in shock, pulling away from Kyle. "How can you just forgive me after everything I did to you?" "Easy," Kyle said, taken aback by Cody's reaction. "I just do. You're my best-friend, and we love each other." Kyle finally told Cody about the night before they had had sex, and Cody saying that loved Kyle. "So, you see, I feel the same way about you." Cody got up and started to pace the floor. His mind was reeling and he started to bite his fingernails, which Kyle knew Cody only ever did when really nervous. "It's okay, Cody. It really is?" "And what about the other stuff?" Cody's voice became very serious. He had stopped pacing, and his eyes grew a little wider. "Yeah, totally," Kyle looked cautiously at Cody. "I forgive you for hitting me, calling me names and even lying to Mr. Nader--" "And what about everything with Dan?" "What about Dan?" Kyle's heart started to race, his face was burning. A small voice in his head was crying out, but the pounding in his ears made it impossible for him to hear what was being said. Cody stood in scared silence, frozen in place. "What about Dan, Cody?" Kyle repeated, with a mix of welling anger and desperation. "Dan molesting you...like he did me...." Cody's voice was small and mousy. "What are you saying, Cody?" Kyle said through gritted teeth. His body was quivering, tears streamed down his small face. "I--, I--, I--" "Just say it!" Cody whispered, "I told Dan to molest you."
