Chapter 22 The next couple of weeks were pretty mellow. Kyle struggled a little in math and social studies, but he excelled in language arts. Mr. Morrow was friendly with him again, though he didn't know that he was dating Cody, who said he wasn't ready to be out of the closet yet. Kyle understood and didn't push the issue. He was out to most people, and he wasn't comfortable with the idea of being bullied again. Mr. Nader took it upon himself to take credit for Kyle and Cody's reunion. At lunch one day, he saw the pair eating together and commented that he was pleased that his intervention during Kyle's attempt to attack Cody resulted in them being friends. "See, Cody," the vice principal smugly said, "it shows that you can be friends with your bully." Cody started to say something, but Kyle stopped him. He knew there was no point, as the man was a raging cock-bag, and he didn't want Cody to get in trouble, either. Despite Kyle's happiness, Ry was not pleased with the relationship. Ry hadn't forgiven Cody for attacking Kyle and then playing the victim. Cody wasn't allowed at Ry's, and it was made clear to not even ask. "I think he's jealous," Steve whispered to Kyle one night. "He's straight," Kyle sighed. "So? What does that have to do with anything?" "How can he be jealous of Cody? Ry's not into me like that. He said so, himself." "I dunno, dude. He seems jealous to me." At night, Ry would still cuddle with Kyle. It didn't escape Kyle's notice that Ry held him a little tighter than before. Steve's words kept him awake. What if Ry is into me? Ry was sweet, brave and kind, but he also said he was straight, which was a boundary that he had been respecting. Being very young boys, they ignored the other's morning wood, and occasionally joked about it. However, things never got sexual or intimate. Even if Ry did have romantic feelings for Kyle, Kyle's heart belonged to Rick. Dating Cody was hard enough knowing that he wasn't in love with him, and Kyle didn't want to hurt Ry as he knew he'd hurt Cody in the end. Kyle rolled over to face Ry, who was big-spooning him. His mouth was slightly open and sleeping soundly. He didn't know why he did it. He guessed it was to see if what Steve had said was true...or maybe to see what it would be like. Kyle moved a little closer to Ry, leaned in, and gently kissed the sleeping boy. At the touch of their lips, Ry snapped awake. His eyes were just as wide as Kyle's, whose lips were still pursed. "What the fuck are you doing?" Ry demanded. "I--, I--, I--" Kyle muttered. "Did you kiss me?" Ry sounded shocked and a little desperate. He shoved Kyle away, separating each other. "Yes," Kyle answered with a small voice. "Why? Why the fuck would you do that?" The bedroom light turned on. Ry had woken the others. "What the hell, guys?" Jamie said, rubbing her eyes. "What's going on?" Donny said. "Kyle kissed Ry," answered Danny. "Why would he do that?" "Yeah, why would you do that?" Demanded Jamie. "It's my fault," Steve said. He explained what he told Kyle. Jamie threw her pillow hitting Steve in the face. "Why would you do that? Ry's not into dudes, you moron." Ry sat on his bed staring at Kyle, who was silently crying. Kyle tried apologizing, but he could get the words out. Steve got onto the bed and hugged Kyle. He looked at Ry and said, "I'm sorry. I was wrong. Kyle didn't mean to upset you. I put that thought in his head. Don't blame him." Ry got out the bed, grabbed a blanket and pillow, and left the room. Danny and Steve called out to Ry to return, but it was no use. Steve took Ry's place in the bed and continued to hold Kyle. "Can we go back to bed now?" Jamie said, turning the light back off. "I'm sorry, Kyle," Steve whispered. "I promise not to freak out if you kiss me in my sleep, though," lightly chuckling. Kyle half-laughed/half-sobbed. "Too soon?" Steve held Kyle for the rest of the night. Ry had a fitful sleep. He went to the couch in the family room. He beat himself up for overreacting. Kyle wasn't a bad person for what he did or who he is. Steve was to blame, but he wasn't wrong...well, not entirely wrong. Ry was jealous of Cody. He was certain that if he had hurt Kyle the way Cody did, Kyle wouldn't have forgiven him. He was also pissed at Cody. Cody didn't deserve forgiveness for what he did. Nearly breaking Kyle's nose, call him a faggot, then claiming to be the victim; it was unforgivable. Kyle was the nicest, sweetest kid he knew. Ry wanted to go back to bed, but he didn't want to wake everybody up again. Jamie would lose it. He also wasn't sure how he felt about the kiss. He had never been kissed before, and he never thought his first kiss would be from a guy. He did concede that at least it was Kyle who did it. It didn't turn him on, which made him feel better about it. He was certain he was straight and the kiss definitely proved that. It wasn't bad, though. Maybe I'll ask Kyle to teach me how to kiss before I get a girlfriend? He thought. Probably not. Kyle was like the little brother he didn't have, and he was that comfortable with it in the end. Ry came into the room once everyone started to wake up. He noticed that everyone, including Kyle, were packing their things. Steve, Donny, Danny and Jamie usually left after the first night, but Kyle had always stayed till Sunday afternoon. He could feel the tension in the room that his presence created. He knew there was only one way to fix it. Ry walked up to Kyle, who flinched. Ry's stomach lurched with regret and shame, but he pressed on. He grabbed Kyle and pulled him into a long hug. He could feel Kyle shudder and knew there would be tears soon. Ry stepped back, his hands on Kyle's shoulders. He looked into Kyle's eyes and said, "Don't kiss me again without asking first, okay?" Kyle nodded. "And next time," Ry added, smiling, "a little less tongue, please." A choir of "Eww" and "Gross" echoed before laughter replaced the repulsion. "You're not staying?" Ry looked at Kyle, who still held his bag. "I guess I could stay." He added, "If you want me to." "Of course, I want you to stay. It was just a kiss, Kyle. It's not like you tried having sex with me." Kyle blushed and put his bag down. Once everyone else left, Ry threw himself onto his bed and yawned. "Did sleep well?" Kyle asked, also laying down. "Nope. I sleep like shit when you're not here. How 'bout you? How'd you sleep?" "Like crap. Steve was nice to sleep with me, but his snoring was horrible." "Yeah, that's why he sleeps on the floor. He's just loud enough to keep me awake, otherwise." "Right?! I wanted to sleep with you, but I thought you were still mad at me." Ry looked at his feet and said, "I wasn't mad at you. I'm still not mad at you. You just shocked me was all." "I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking." "Look, I'm a hot piece of man-candy," Ry gave a sly grin. "It's not your fault you can't keep your hands off of me. I mean, I'm constantly fighting myself off." Kyle punched Ry's shoulder and laughed, when Ry pretended his arm was broken. After howling in fake pain, Ry rolled over, pulled Kyle into him, rested his head on his friend's shoulder, and the pair fell asleep. Kyle got home mid-afternoon on Sunday. As he walked up to the porch, he caught some movement out of the corner of his eye. He looked up and saw Dan waving at him. The man was standing on the lawn wearing briefs and an open bathrobe. Even from that distance, Kyle could see that Dan had a boner. Horrified, Kyle turned and ran into his house. "Hey! No running!" Ronda admonished. Kyle didn't stop till he was in his room. There was a knock on the door, and his mother opened it. "What's going on? Why are you running?" She caught the look of abject fear on his son's face. "Kyle, what happened?" Kyle told her what he saw. Rage filled his mother's eyes. "That sick son-of-a-bitch!" And she was off like a hurricane. Realizing what might happen, Kyle chased after his mother. It was too late to stop her. By the time Kyle got to the porch, Ronda was already hitting Dan with a bat. The large man was on the ground crying out for help but none came. With each strike, Ronda screamed at the man with a mix of insults and threats. Eventually, another neighbor, Terry, came out and pulled Ronda off the man. "Get your fucking ass inside, freak, before I let her go!" Terry was a very tall, muscular black man. His deep voice was menacing and filled with venom. The power behind his voice was contrasted with apparent inability to hold onto Ronda. Soon, Terry's wife, Lydia, came out to help. Together they managed to get Ronda back into the house. Lydia talked Ronday down, while Terry made tea. Though Terry and Lydia were outraged at what Dan had done, they tried to reason with Ronda. Rick came home from an emergency meeting, to find Ronda still in a rage, though not wanting to be violent again. Terry explained what had happened, and Rick was in too much shock to immediately respond. Eventually, he sat down and talked to Ronda. He explained the obvious about the police and how she could go to prison for what just happened. It was about 4pm when there was a heavy knock on the door. Rick looked out the dining room window and said the police were there. Everyone got quiet as Rick got up from the table. "Kyle, take Charlie to his room, please." Rick asked as he got close to the door. Kyle took Charlie by the hand and nearly dragged him away. They went into Charlie's room as directed, but they stuck their heads out of the door to see what was happening. "We got a call from your neighbor saying that a woman who lives here had attacked him," said the patrolman. Ronda got up from the table, looked at her boys, dropped her head and went to the door. She stepped outside, and Rick went with her, closing the door behind them. Charlie bolted passed Kyle and ran to the living room window. Kyle followed. There were flashing lights, several cop cars and an ambulance in Dan's driveway. They couldn't hear what was being said, but Ronda was animated and crying. Rick was trying to comfort her, but she kept shrugging his arm off. The officers seemed indifferent. A few minutes into the interview, Detective Dunham arrived. Kyle assumed the tale was retold to her. She talked to one of the officers then turned to Ronda. After several minutes, Ronda was placed in handcuffs and put in the back of a patrol car. Charlie and Kyle were crying and Ronda looked up at her boys. Rick and the detective made their way into the house. Charlie ran into Rick's arms demanding that his mother come back. He looked passed his father and stared daggers at the detective and made the same demand. Rick picked his youngest up and said, "It's not Detective Dunham's fault. Mommy did something bad. She's going to be okay. I promise." Charlie wrapped his arms around Rick's neck and sobbed. "Kyle," Detective Dunham said, "I'm going to have to talk to you about what happened, okay?" She looked at Terry and Lydia and made the same request. Rick took Charlie to another room, while everyone told the detective what had happened from their perspectives. Dunham listened to every word and took a lot of notes. She asked Kyle to repeat his account twice. "Okay, I think I have everything I need." She got up and shook everyone's hands. "What's going to happen to my mom?" Kyle asked. "She's going to jail. The officers and I will write our reports and submit them to the District Attorney, who will decide if she wants to file criminal charges. If she does, your mom will have to go through the criminal justice system." "When will she come home?" Tears started to fall. "I don't have an answer for that, Kyle. I'm really sorry, but that's out of my hands. However, I will do my best to make sure the D.A. knows why your mom did what she did, and hopefully, she'll be home sooner than later." Kyle walked everyone out, then went to Charlie's room. His little brother was still crying. Kyle sat down on the bed, and pulled the boy into his arms. Rick began to cry and hugged his kids. ***Chapter 23 Coming Soon***
