Chapter 31 Charlie was not happy to hear that he still had to go to school, while Kyle got to skip another day. "It's not fair!" "For the last time," Rick said. "Kyle isn't skipping. He has an appointment and it might take all day, which is also why you're going to Michael's right after school." "But why can't I go, too?" "The lawyer doesn't need to talk to you. She needs to talk to me and Kyle only." "But--" "Charlie, so help me, I'm not in the mood. You're going to school and that's final," Rick snapped. Charlie looked like a wounded deer. He had never been told off by his dad (his mother was another story, though), but he went quiet. Kyle was internally freaking out. He didn't like talking to the cops, though Detective Dunham wasn't too bad. He often wished that he never had sex with Dan, and wondered what his life would be like if things had gone differently. Father and son pulled into the parking lot of Rebecca's practice. Rick looked at Kyle and said, "Buddy, you're going to hear a lot of things...bad things...and you need to know that, no matter what's said, I still love you, will always love you, and I will do everything in my power to protect you." "You're scaring me," Kyle said, showing his internal fear. "I'm scared, too, Kyle, but we need to get through this and we can talk all you want, okay?" Kyle could only trust his lover. They got out of the truck and headed to the door. Rick took Kyle by the hand, and Kyle wasn't sure if Rick was trying to give him strength or gain some for himself. Antonio, Rebecca's assistant, welcomed and led the pair to the conference room. "Is there anything I can get you?" "Water for me, thanks," Rick said. Kyle only shook his head no. Antonio gave a weak smile before leaving. He returned with Rebecca and a pitcher of ice water and some glasses. "Hi, you must be Kyle," Rebecca said warmly. "I've heard a lot of good things about you from your dad," indicating Rick. "Thanks," Kyle said meekly, shaking her hand. "I bet you're wondering why you're here." "Yeah." "Then I won't keep you waiting too much longer, okay?" Rebecca grabbed a box of tissues and handed them to an already tearing Kyle. "Before we get started, you need to know that everyone here is working for you. We only want what's best for you and will do everything in our power to make sure everything works out in your favor." "What's going on? Am I in trouble?" "No, Buddy," Rick said, hugging Kyle. "You are definitely not in trouble. There's more to the divorce than I wanted to say in front of your brother; things he doesn't need to know unless you want him to know." "Would somebody just tell me what's going on then?!" Kyle demanded, breaking in frustration. "So, as you know, your mom and dad are getting a divorce," Rebecca stated. "Since Rick is your step-dad, he only has legal custody over you while your parents are married. With me so far?" Kyle nodded. "Good. So, when your parents divorce, Rick will not have legal custody over you, which means the government can have you moved to your next living relative." "Like grandma and grandpa's?" Kyle said, confused, looking at Rick. "I would have to move to Nebraska?" "No, Buddy," Rick said, "At least not with your grandparents." "Then who?" Rebecca looked at Kyle and said, "What do you know about your birth father?" Kyle's heart pounded in his chest. Rick and the other adults looked concerned, as if Kyle might pass out, he went so pale. "Nothing," Kyle replied, breathlessly. "Then, this is going to be a long conversation," Rebecca said somberly, opening a large file. She told Kyle everything she had told Rick the day before. Kyle's mind raced, trying to retain as much information as he could. Then the worst of the information came up, "And so, he went to prison for abusing you and several other children." "What do you mean?" Kyle said, snapping back to the moment. "According to the court documents we received, Mr. Parker was caught by your mother in the act of sexually abusing you when you were about 2-years-old." Kyle began to sob. Rick held Kyle tight. Rebecca and Antonio sat in silence. Once Kyle was calmer, he said, "Is that why I'm gay?" "No, Buddy. It doesn't work that way," Rick stammered. "How do you know?" "I know," Antonio said. Kyle looked across the table to the handsome, dark skinned man and saw honesty in his deep, brown eyes. "I'm gay and I've never been molested or sexually assaulted. I also have male friends who were molested at a very young age by men, and they're very, very straight. Your dad is right: It doesn't work that way. Being gay is something you're born as. You are meant to be gay, just as I am." Kyle took a deep, steadying breath. "Are you sure?" "1,000,000%, and I can't wait to see you at Pride. I have a nephew I'd like to introduce you to." Kyle blushed. "So," Rebecca said, "We need to get back on track. Kyle, in the event your dad can't get custody of you, the State might determine that you'll have to live with Mr. Parker. Now, given that you're a victim of his, I believe the court will not place you in his custody; however, the courts have been wrong before. My plan is to get your mother to hand over custody and her parental rights of you to your dad, and we will also petition to the Court to have him legally adopt you. We're still waiting for a copy of your mom's divorce papers from Nebraska. Once we get them, we'll know what kind of claim Mr. Parker might have." "I don't want to leave my dad and brother," Kyle said. "And I promise I will do everything legally possible to make sure you won't have to," Rebecca said. After the meeting, Rick took Kyle out to lunch. Neither was particularly hungry, so they just sat in Rick's truck picking at their food. It was a surprisingly warm day for late fall. Usually after Halloween, the temperature dropped and clouds stayed for six to eight months. Kyle lifted the center console and climbed into Rick's lap. Rick wrapped his arms around his boy, as Kyle nuzzled his face into the crook of Rick's neck. Rick felt tears run down his neck and into his shirt. He leaned his head and kissed Kyle lightly on the lips. "I'm sorry," Rick said, holding back his own tears. "I wish I had known everything." "I hate Mom," Kyle whimpered. "I know you do, Baby. I'm not a fan of hers, either," said Rick. "I get she was trying to protect you, and now we know why, but if she hadn't kept this a secret, I could've done so much to protect you from Dan, and I could've adopted you when she and I first got married. I wanted it so bad, but she didn't want your birth father finding us. I see her reasons, but her fear has put us at risk of losing each other." "I don't want to lose you." "You will never lose me, Baby. Not now, not ever." Rick continued to hold Kyle. Eventually, Kyle grew so emotionally drained that he fell asleep. Rick sent Michael's mom a text asking if Charlie could stay the night at her place; she said it was fine. Rick then sent a text to Cody's dad asking if he could let the school know that Kyle was going to need another day off for personal reasons. Leaving Kyle on his lap, Rick started the truck and started to drive out of town. Kyle woke up as Rick laid him down on an unfamiliar bed. His eyes were misty from all the crying he had done. Kyle wiped his eyes and saw that he was in a hotel room. "Where are we?" "At the beach," Rick said, laying down next to Kyle. "Why are we here?" "I thought you could use a break from life." Kyle looked confused, so Rick said, "I mean, you've had such a hard time the last few months that you could use a small break from everything." "What about Charlie and school?" "I took care of that already. We're going home tomorrow, but till then, it's just you and me." Kyle started to cry again, so Rick leaned in and kissed him. "No more tears, okay? I want to see that sweet smile I fell in love with." Kyle couldn't help but smile. "See, there it is," Rick said, smiling, which only broadened Kyle's grin. Rick kept this up until Kyle's face hurt and he started to laugh. Kyle declared that he was hungry, so they went and got some food. Kyle wasn't a huge fan of fish, so he ordered a burger and fries, while Rick got chowder. Rick drove them to a beach, where they walked along the surf and talked about anything that had nothing to do with Kyle's legal situations. "How are things with the boyfriends?" Rick teased. Kyle kicked sand with his barefoot at his dad. "I don't have boyfriends. How many times do we have to go over that?!" He also remembered that he owed Charlie one for starting that rumor. "Then what would you call them?" "Well, Cody is my boyfriend, and Ry is just a friend." "With benefits," Rick chided. Seeing the look of confusion on Kyle's face, Rick explained what a friend with benefits was. Despite the night, Rick could see Kyle blush. "So," Kyle said, "Are we friends with benefits?" It was Rick's turn to blush. With a wide smile, he said, "Yes, but I think we're more than that." "Like being my dad?" "Yes, but still more than that. You know I'm in love with you, and in ways I could never be with your mom. Our situation is very complicated." "Because I'm still a kid," Kyle said, a little disappointed. "Well, yes, but also I'm your brother's dad, Kyle. Even if you were 18, imagine how Charlie would react if he knew his dad and brother were lovers? Some adults would think it was weird but would get over it, because we're not blood related, but to Charlie, we're blood related to him. If you and I ever got married, you'd be his brother and step-dad." Kyle stopped walking. He never thought of it that way. His mind started to race, trying to figure out a way around it...that didn't involve Charlie's death. "Does this mean we can't ever be together?" "Openly together, you mean?" "Yeah, like when I turn 18; you and I can't ever be a couple, because of Charlie?" "Mostly, yeah, but I'm not entirely sure." Rick lifted and pulled Kyle into him. "I love you, Kyle, more than I have ever thought was possible. I don't ever want to lose you, and I hope you feel the same way about me. We have 6 years to figure this out, so in the meantime, I think we should just enjoy the time we have together. When the time comes and we want to tell Charlie, we'll discuss how then. Deal?" "Deal," Kyle whispered, kissing Rick on the lips. Kyle pulled away and proclaimed, "You really need to brush your teeth!" "What? Why?" Rick said, taken aback. "You taste like fish, and there's no way I'm letting you suck my dick with a fishy tongue." Rick dropped Kyle, who began to laugh. Rick chased Kyle back to the truck and drove back to the hotel room. They both wanted to go to bed, though neither was particularly tired. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 32***
