Chapter 40 The next day was tense. Ry was nervous and jumpy. He was sure his dad was going to get out of jail and come for him. Rick tried to assure the boy that his parents weren't coming home anytime soon, but that didn't stop Ry from constantly looking out the windows to be sure. Kyle also tried to calm his friend down, but it didn't work. He even suggested gaming, but Ry said he wasn't in the mood. Rick decided that the best option was to take the boys out of town. He called Rebecca and (reluctantly) Will, and explained his plan. Will explained that Mr. Doernbecker was booked and awaiting arraignment, while Mrs. Doernbecker was to be released to a rehab facility that Tuesday pending her own arraignment for trespassing, public intoxication and a few other minor charges. "I honestly don't know how long she'll be there," Will said. "Unless the Court orders it, the facility could let her out whenever she wanted. At that point, I have little doubt she'll come for Ry, and there's nothing anyone can do until she does something illegal." "And there's nothing that I can do to stop her from taking him?" "Not legally, no." "Fine," Rick said before hanging up. Once the boys were packed and ready, Rick drove north. He had a destination, but he didn't know exactly which way he wanted to take. Kyle and Ry sat in the backseat, while Charlie sat up front. Rick normally drove with the music off, but allowed Charlie to find something to listen to, given the length of the trip. Charlie put it on a country music station, which caused protests from the back. Rick made the boys compromise, giving each a time limit with a particular style of music. The last thing he wanted to deal with was a bunch of bickering. For the most part, everyone was quiet. Rick used the time to try to find ways to keep his family together. He couldn't ask Ry to lie about his mother abusing him, which was the only idea that kept cropping up. Rick was glad he didn't have to worry about losing Kyle, and of course, Charlie was going nowhere. He needed a legal means to take custody of Ry, and he felt that there just had to be a way. Kyle spent his time thinking about Will. He was growing more and more conflicted with each meeting. His father didn't seem at all the monster everyone made him out to be; however, Dan didn't seem that bad either, until he tried raping Kyle. Will also made sure that Ry was safe and able to stay, and Will said that he did it because Ry was important to Kyle. But, there was still the fact that Will was convicted of molesting Kyle, despite Will's assertion of innocence. Then again, Will didn't try fighting Rick for custody, and even went out of his way to make sure that Kyle could stay with Rick and Charlie. Nothing made sense...unless Kyle was willing to accept Will's side of things. Ry did his best to remain in the moment. He didn't want to think of his parents and the pain they caused him. He imagined what his life would be like if Rick was able to adopt him. He'd have the siblings he always wanted, even an annoying, little brother. Rick was also a great dad. Ry's own father was an okay dad when he wasn't doing drugs and drinking. Hearing his dad say that Ry wasn't his son broke the boy. He was sure it was the drugs talking, but what if it was true? Who was his real dad then? Charlie looked out the window. He missed his mom all the time. She was his best-friend. They did all kinds of things together, like going to the park, playing video games and just talking. She was always there when he needed her. Now, Rick was so busy with Kyle and now Ry, he felt alone. He loved his dad, and his brother was okay, but he and Kyle were never close. Kyle was always too busy or annoyed to hang out and play. Ry made an effort to play with him, but that usually ended when Kyle came around. He was bitter that his entire life was turned upside down because of Kyle. If Kyle was a better person, Charlie would still have his mom, more time with his dad, and he wouldn't be all alone. He wished Ry was his brother instead of Kyle. It was just after sunset when they entered Washington. The freeway was jammed with holiday and weekend traffic. The boys had grown restless and hungry. All three boys started fighting over where to eat. Kyle and Ry had a rather tense argument, in which Charlie was quick to take Ry's side. In the end, Rick yelled at everyone to shut up, as he pulled into a truck stop parking lot. The greasy spoon was filled with long-haul truckers. The atmosphere was low-key and the smells of fried food made everyone's mouths water. The head waitress told Rick to sit wherever they like. Rick and the boys headed towards a booth in the corner. Ry got in first, followed by Charlie, who shoved Kyle out of the way. Kyle got angry and pushed Charlie back. Rick snapped at them and told Kyle to sit with him. Ry made a point to avoid eye contact with Kyle. He was still bitter from their fight earlier. Rick knew the boys were tired, but he wasn't going to put up with their crap for much longer. Everyone ate their meals in silence. The truck stop had a hotel on the property, so Rick got a room with two beds. He had the boys bring up their bags, which seemed to irritate them further. Rick then made them take showers. As Ry went to take his, Kyle walked into the bathroom behind him. "What are you doing?" Ry snapped. "Taking a shower with you," Kyle said stunned, with a hint on indignation. "I think I can shower on my own, thanks. We're not boyfriends, in case you forgot." "How can I, with all the constant reminders?" Kyle said, through gritted teeth. Charlie was the next to shower, having pushed Kyle out of the way again. Kyle complained to Rick, but Rick told Kyle to just let it go. Kyle didn't want to let it go. He wanted to punch Charlie and Ry for the way they were acting. He hadn't done anything wrong, but they were treating him like a dick, and Rick was just letting it happen. Finally, it was Kyle's turn. He stood under the shower head and tried letting everything wash off of him. Frustration turned into anger. He didn't know why Ry was so mad at him. Kyle didn't want pizza, and couldn't see why Ry was so pissed off at him for disagreeing. He and Charlie didn't get along most of the time, but Charlie was being a bigger brat than normal. What hurt more was Rick letting the others treat him like shit. He just stood there letting Charlie literally shove him twice! Kyle cried. He crumpled to the floor and wished he had never been born. Kyle left the shower, only after Rick pounded on the door. Rick was reluctant to take a shower, not wanting to leave the boys unattended, but he really needed to take one. He decided to take a quick shower, believing that the boys couldn't get up too much with only a few minutes supervised. He was dead wrong. As Rick turned off the water, he heard a crash, screaming and crying. He grabbed a towel, threw it around his waist and swung the bathroom door open. He saw Charlie on one of the beds, crying, holding his bleeding nose. Kyle and Ry were on the floor, rolling around and hitting each other. Rick yelled at the boys to stop, but neither obeyed. He ran over, grabbed each and started to yank them apart. In the conflict his towel came loose and fell. Rick had never hit his kids. He didn't believe in spanking, but he was very tempted to start. "What the fuck is going on?" He barked. "He started it," Kyle spat, pointing at Charlie. "Did not!" Charlie yelled back. "Yes you did!" "Shut up!" Rick bellowed. He grabbed the towel and wrapped it around himself once more. "You," Rick said, pointing at a scared looking Ry, who was having flashbacks of his own father's rage, "What happened?" Ry said that he and Charlie were in bed, and Kyle demanded that Charlie sleep in the other bed. Charlie didn't want to, so Kyle tried pulling Charlie out. Charlie kicked Kyle, so Kyle punched Charlie in the face. Ry got mad at Kyle and didn't want Kyle to hit Charlie again, so he jumped on Kyle, who started hitting him back, and that was when Rick came out. "Is that true?" He asked his boys, who both grudgingly agreed. Rick looked at Kyle and said, "Apologize to your brother." "No!" Kyle said, tears falling once more, his face a deep red. "He pushed me twice and you didn't do anything. I was just trying to go to bed, and he wouldn't move. Ry and I always sleep together, and Charlie knows it. He's being a brat, and you're letting him!" "Charlie is only 6-years-old, Kyle. You're twice his age." "So! What does that have to do with anything?! You always let him do what he wants! He gets away with everything!" "No I don't!" Charlie bellowed. Ry sat next to the little boy, and put an arm around him. Charlie said to Ry, "I wish you were my brother." Despite his anger with Charlie, those words hurt Kyle deeper than any punch Ry had given him. "Fuck you!" Kyle spat. Rick didn't know why he did it. It just happened. Maybe it was the heat of the moment? Maybe it was just a reflex, but he slapped Kyle. Nothing hard. It didn't even leave a physical mark, but it hit everyone. Kyle was stunned. Not even his hot-headed mother had ever struck him. Kyle looked at Rick as if he didn't know who he was. Rick looked scared. Kyle could plainly see the fear and regret in Rick's eyes, but it was too late to take it back. "Kyle," Rick stammered. "I'm--I'm so sorry. I--." Kyle only turned around, grabbed his bag, and walked towards the door. He stopped, looked at Ry and Charlie and said, "I hope you're happy now," before walking into the cold night. Rick hastily put on his pants and a shirt. He ran outside but couldn't see Kyle anywhere. He called out to his son, but no-one answered. Rick pulled out his phone and called Kyle's number and got no answer. Panic filled him. He didn't know what to do. The thought of calling the police wasn't an option because he was afraid to tell them what had happened. Instead of the police, Rick called Rebecca, as he got into his truck. A very groggy Rebecca answered. Rick explained the situation, which prompted Rebecca to order Rick to call the police, and assured him that he wouldn't lose Kyle. Rick hung up and called the police. He went back to the room and waited for the cops. The police arrived within a few minutes. Rick explained the situation once more to an officer, who also took a picture of Kyle from Rick. The officer called in the missing persons to dispatch. The officer then said to Rick, "I'll start looking for Kyle. Other officers are on their way, as well. If he comes back, call this number," the cop handed Rick a card with the officer's name and phone number on it. "Thank you so much," Rick said, choking back his tears. "These things happen a lot. The kids usually return after a few minutes, once they realize they've got nowhere else to go and don't have the funds to take care of themselves." Rick wasn't very comforted by the statement, but accepted it for what it was. Ry and Charlie fell asleep a couple hours after the cop left. Charlie snuggled into Ry's chest, as the older boy held him close. Rick couldn't sleep. His anxiety hadn't abated. Images of a John Wayne Gacy type trucker raping and killing Kyle flooded his brain. He was fidgety and paced the room. Just after midnight, there was a soft knock on the door. Rick jumped out of bed and ran to the door. He opened it to see Kyle...and behind Kyle was Will Parker. Rick grabbed Kyle and pulled him into a hug, which wasn't returned. Once Rick let Kyle go, Kyle moved passed his dad without saying a word. Rick stood and said to Will, "Thanks for bringing him back." Will looked unhappy. He said, "We need to talk...now." He stepped into the parking lot, turned and waited for Rick to join him. Rick slipped his shoes on and closed the door behind him. "I'm sorry," he said. "I don't know what Kyle told you, but--" "Save it," Will said, sternly. "Kyle told me what happened. Luckily, I was already in town on business; otherwise, who knows what would've happened to our son." "I know. It's all my fault." "No. It's not all your fault," Will said. Rick was taken aback. Will continued, "I had a long talk with Kyle. I understand that he shouldn't have hit Charlie. But, what is your fault, is your neglect of Charlie. I warned you about this. You're spending more time with Kyle and now Ry, which is alienating Charlie, who is acting out the only way he knows how. I told you this would happen, and you ignored me. I get that you don't like me, and frankly, I don't care; however, you have three boys in there to whom you're their only parent. You need to make time for each of them before they turn on each other and you." "I understand," Rick said. He felt ashamed. It was bad enough having done what he did to Kyle, but to be given parenting advice by a convicted child molester (especially the guy who abused his kid) was a new low. "I hope so," Will added. "If this continues to happen, I may have no other choice but to challenge you for custody." ***Coming Soon, Chapter 41***
