Chapter 41 When Rick returned to the room, Kyle was in bed. Rick removed all his clothing except his boxer and climbed in next to Kyle. He moved up against his son and put an arm around the boy. Kyle said, "Don't touch me." Rick pulled his arm away and backed off of Kyle. "I'm sorry I hit you," Rick whispered, choking up a little. "I don't care," Kyle said, his own emotions welling up. "I didn't mean to hurt you." "I said 'I don't care.'" "I love you, Kyle," Rick muttered. "I hate you," Kyle said. Rick rolled over and faced away from Kyle. Father and son silently cried themselves to sleep. Sunday was marginally better than the night before. Charlie and Ry got along really well. Neither was happy with Kyle, so they created a mutual front against him. Rick kept his distance from Kyle, who seemed happy to be left alone. Their first stop was the local zoo. Rick loved going there as a kid. At one point, he wanted to be a zoologist, but his grades weren't good enough. Ry and Charlie moved quickly from exhibit to exhibit. Kyle trailed behind, while Rick tried to keep everyone in sight. "The zoo was a good choice," Rick heard a familiar, grating voice. Rick looked to his left and saw Will Parker walking his way. "Are you stalking us, now?" Rick said, irritated at seeing him. "No. I was invited," Will said, nodding his head towards Kyle, who was walking their way. Kyle walked passed Rick without acknowledging him and gave Will a hug. Will looked mildly shaken and awkwardly returned it. "Thanks for coming, Will," Kyle said with a smile very reminiscent of his birth father's. "Thanks for inviting me." Kyle took Will by the hand and led him to a pen containing some tropical birds. It was obvious to everyone, even Charlie, what Kyle was up to. Ry and Rick were horrified and disgusted by Will's presence, and Charlie, who didn't know most of the details about Will, took it as a challenge to his own game. Will, for his part, played along. He knew that he was a pawn, which amused and impressed him. Anyone else would've been offended at being used, but Will took it as an opportunity to bond with his son, while leaving it to Kyle to teach Rick the lesson. In an attempt to show no hard feelings towards Rick, Will insisted on buying everyone lunch. Kyle and Will sat at their own table, leaving Rick and the boys by themselves. Will leaned in towards Kyle and said, "How well do you think you're doing?" "What do you mean?" Kyle asked, trying to talk around his sandwich. "I'm not stupid, Kyle," Will said, still amused by the situation. "I know why you invited me, and so do all of them." Kyle took measure of his father, debated whether to keep up his act, and decided to give it up. "Sorry," Kyle muttered. Kyle was taken aback when Will laughed. His father said, "There's no need to be sorry. I'm glad we're getting time to spend together, even if it's because you want to piss Rick off." "I am glad you're here," Kyle said sheepishly. "And it isn't just because it'll make Rick mad. I want to get to know you, and not just what people say about you. There's a lot that isn't making sense, so the more we hang out, the more I think I can figure out." "What doesn't make sense?" Will asked. "Why you're helping Ry, for starters." "As I told Rick, I'm doing it because Ry is important to you." "Is that the only reason?" "Yes," Will said earnestly. "It's not that Ry isn't a good kid or anything, and I feel bad that his dad abused him; however, I most likely wouldn't have done what I did if he didn't mean so much to you." "I guess that makes sense," Kyle said. "And it's okay if it doesn't. Life doesn't have to make sense; in fact, it doesn't more often than it does." Kyle nodded his agreement. "What else is bothering you?" Will asked. "Why are you being so nice?" "Because I'm just a nice guy," Will said with a smile. "You know what I mean," Kyle said, getting irritated. "Yeah, I know what you mean," Will said, turning serious once again. "Again, it's for you. Before I went to prison, you were my entire life. Almost everything I did, I did it for you. After you were born, I worked from home, so I could watch you, while your mom went to work. I took you to all your appointments, changed your diapers, bathed you, clothed you, and I was the one who always got up in the middle of the night whenever you needed me. "It killed me when your mom made those allegations against me. Anyone who knew me and how much I loved you knew there was no way I could've molested you. I had plenty of character witnesses who were willing to testify on my behalf; unfortunately, my character witnesses weren't allowed to testify. "I got my law degree in prison, so I could not only overturn my convictions, especially the allegations your mother made. I also wanted to know how to get you back. You were the only reason I kept going inside. The memory of your first steps, your first laugh, your first word...did you know your first word was 'Dad'?" Kyle shook his head no. Will laughed and continued, "Your mother was so pissed. She spent months trying to get you to say 'Mama', and it took me a week to get you to say 'Dad.' I recorded you saying it, so whenever we had a serious fight, I'd play it just to piss her off even more." Will wiped his eyes with his napkin. "Do you still have it?" "The recording? Yes, I do," Will said. His tone changed. Kyle couldn't put his finger on it, but he sensed there was something wrong about it. "Can I hear it?" Kyle asked. "Not at this moment," Will said, somberly. "But, yes, you will see the video at some point." Will looked at his phone and said, "Look at the time!" His usual, jovial demeanor returned. "I've got to get going. I have a meeting in an hour and still have something to prepare." Father and son stood. Kyle walked around the table and gave Will another hug; this time it was genuine. Will nervously returned it. He broke the hug, took Kyle by the shoulders and said, "Thank you again for inviting me. I really did have a great time. I think you've proven your point, by the way, so how about cutting your dad a break? He loves you, and I know last night won't happen again." "Okay," Kyle said, seeing the wisdom in Will's words. Once Will thanked Rick and the others for a pleasant day, Kyle joined them at the table. Kyle apologized to Charlie for hitting him and to Ry for fighting with him; however, he intentionally avoided apologizing to Rick. He knew he shouldn't have fought with the others, but he didn't see how that justified Rick slapping him. The rest of the zoo trip went about the same as the beginning, except that Kyle wasn't as distant. He still didn't hang around the boys and especially avoided Rick. As much as he appreciated Will's advice, he could still feel Rick's hand on his face. After the zoo, Rick took the boys out to dinner, before driving home. Ry suggested pizza, again, and Charlie was quick to second it. Kyle didn't say a word, so Rick picked a pizza parlor with a play area and arcade. He gave the boys each ten dollars for quarters. Ry and Charlie blew their money right away, while Kyle put his money in his pocket. It took some convincing to get Charlie off of the play structure, but eventually, all four of them sat down for dinner. They got home around 8:00 P.M. Charlie and Ry fell asleep in the back seat. Kyle was first one out of the truck and into the house. Rick carried Charlie in, while Ry grabbed the bags. Kyle went right to bed. He didn't feel like having a heart-to-heart with Rick, which he figured would come if he had stayed up. Ry came to bed about an hour later. "Can we talk?" Ry asked Kyle. "I guess," Kyle said, rolling over to face his friend. "Do you know how lucky you are?" Ry said. "What do you mean?" "You have a dad who loves you. Hell, you have two dads. Rick slapped you one time in your entire life; he barely touched you, and you're pouting. My dad beat me and said that I wasn't his kid. I know you think what Rick did is unforgivable, but you can't keep punishing him." "You don't know what you're talking about," Kyle said. He rolled over. "You know I'm right," Ry said. "No, you're not." "Tell me how I'm wrong, then?" "Because," Kyle said. "That's not an answer, and you know it." Kyle chuckled to himself derisively. He knew the only way to prove Ry wrong was to tell him about his and Rick's relationship. How they'd been lovers for months, and how the slap was more than just a tap to his face. It meant that Rick didn't actually love him, and that, like Dan, Rick was a dirty pervert who was using him for sex. Kyle spent his time wondering if anyone actually loved him. Everyone he had sex with said they loved him, but they all hurt him in the end. The only one who genuinely seemed to care about him was Will, but if the molestation charges were real, then it all started with him. What if Will molesting him set him on a course to fall for guys who only wanted to use him for sex? Kyle wanted to believe that Will was telling the truth. He didn't remember his father, so what if his mother did get it all wrong and over-reacted? What if she robbed him of the only person on Earth who actually loved him unconditionally? Once Kyle heard Rick go to bed, he got up, grabbed a blanket and pillow and slept on the couch. He didn't feel like sleeping with Ry anymore. He was done with Ry, Rick and Cody for that matter. He didn't really have romantic feelings for his actual boyfriend, and he wasn't sure if he ever did. Cody was busy hanging out with the swim team, so he might as well let him go, too. It's all for the best, Kyle told himself as went to sleep. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 42***
