Chapter 47 Charlie waited next to Will. Even though Ry lived a quarter mile away, he hadn't called, although he left two hours prior. Everyone was on edge. The 6-year-old had lost his mother, and he didn't want to lose his new, big brother. He had grown close to Ry since the trip to Washington. I promise, Charlie silently pleaded, I won't make you wear make up or walk into your room without knocking if you call. I promise to be the best little brother ever. Please just call. Will's phone rang, causing Charlie to jump. Will answered and put the phone on speaker. "Ry," Will said. "Are you alright?" "Yeah," Ry answered. His voice sounded distant and strained. "What took you so long to call?" There was a significant pause, and then Ry answered, "We went out to dinner." Will gave Rick a distrusting look, which was shared. "Is your mother next to you?" "No," Ry said, his voice had increased in pitch. "Is someone else there with you?" Rick asked, unable to hide his own mounting desperation. "No," Ry said in a choking whisper. "I have to go." "Ry? Ry!" Will called, but the line was cut off. "I'm going over there," Rick said, moving to get his coat. "Don't go," Will said flatly. "Let me make some phone calls first. If something's wrong, we need to let the police handle it." "I can't wait forever, Will. My son needs me." "Ry isn't your son," Will countered. "He isn't my son, either. Our son and your youngest are here. Ry is my client, and that's the only authority we have without proof of harm. If you go over there now and nothing has happened, you could make things worse." "I don't see how." "Ever heard of Chicken Little? Or the Boy Who Cried Wolf? If you go over there and there's nothing illegal, that will put doubt on the table, which means the police will be less likely to investigate in the future. Let me handle this. I promise I will do the best I can, legally." Will made his phone calls, while Rick comforted Kyle, who was distraught with grief. Charlie, on the other hand, had silently grabbed his coat and walked out the door without anyone noticing. Charlie knew adults spent too much time talking. That's all his parents ever did. It's why he knew Kyle was gay before they did. If they stopped talking and actually paid attention, they would've seen it like he had. Even Kyle talked too much, so it wasn't surprising that Kyle didn't know it either. Well, he was done talking, at least for the moment. Charlie's plan was to walk into Ry's house. Demand that Ry come home with him and leave. It was pretty simple. If his dad and Will had stopped talking, they would've seen how easy it was. Once he got Ry home, Charlie could hide his new brother under his bed, where nobody would find him. Charlie hid under it many times and nobody was ever able to find him during Hide-n-Seek. It was very dark and very cold, but he was determined. He moved very slowly due to all the ice and slick snow. Crossing streets was especially difficult, so he had to take things slowly and keep his footing. Thankfully, the traffic was light due to it being Christmas night. Ry's house was dark and quiet. They must be asleep, Charlie reasoned. He approached the door. His body shook with cold and nerves. He was never afraid of confrontation, but he had the creeps as he got closer. Charlie got to the top step. He thought about ringing the doorbell, but chose against it. If Ry's mom was asleep, it would be much easier to sneak Ry out. Charlie reached up, turned the door knob, and pushed the door open. "I see," Will said gravely. "We're on our way now." "What is it?" Rick asked, his heart sank and he felt the icy chill of his blood draining from his face.. Will teared up and said, "Something's happened to Ry and Charlie." ***Coming Tomorrow, Chapter 48***
