Chapter 48 Rick rushed into the emergency room. The small room was packed with holiday accidents. He ran to the nurse's station and checked himself in. Will was next explaining his relationship to Ry. Both boys were being admitted and tested. The nurse explained that he didn't have any information but would call them once he did. Will was on the phone immediately. He often made the calls outside, especially when they started getting heated. Around two in the morning, a doctor came over. Kyle had fallen asleep in Rick's lap. Rick himself was too scared to sleep but could still feel the strains of fatigue. "Are you Mr. Parker?" The doctor asked. "No, I'm Charlie's dad. Will--Mr. Parker--is still on the phone, but I've been Ry's guardian for almost a month and had been living with me." "I really need to talk to Mr. Parker, as well, but I do have news for you about Charlie." Rick woke Kyle and had him get Will. Rick had the doctor wait for Will and Kyle to return, which didn't take too long. "First, Charlie," the doctor said. "Charlie is physically fine. When he came in, he was non-responsive and near catatonic, so we sedated him for his own safety. We completed a physical exam and found nothing physically wrong with him; however, we believe that he has sustained a major, emotional trauma." "What kind of trauma?" Rick asked. "I think that's best left for the police, since I don't have most of the answers, but given the state Ryland was in, I can safely say that it must have been horrific." "How about Ry, then?" Will asked. The doctor took a seat and asked them to, as well. "Ryland--" "--Ry." Kyle corrected. "Sorry. Ry," The doctor said, giving Kyle a weak smile. "Ry came in suffering a great deal of physical trauma. We're still doing tests and waiting for results, but we've concluded that he sustained multiple blunt-force traumas to the side and back of his head, to his rib cage and spine." Kyle's breath shuttered and he collapsed. Rick and Will both picked up their son and held him. The doctor continued, "Preliminary x-rays showed several fractures in Ry's skull, a few cracked ribs and fractures to his T6, T7, T8 and T9 and possible fractures to his C5 and C6. He is severely swollen and bruised. We had to intubate Ry and induce a coma, since he was having problems breathing on his own, which we think is due to the bodily injuries. We're also concerned with brain bleeds and swelling, and we're waiting on the CT scans to come back." Kyle wailed at the news. Rick and Will didn't bother to console the boy, as they were in tears, themselves. Will managed to collect himself enough to ask a couple questions. "What about Ry's mother, Margot Doernbecker? Any word on her?" "I'm afraid nobody with that name was brought in. The only patients were Ry and Charlie." "When can we see them?" Rick asked, choking back his pain. "We're making arrangements for Charlie to get a bed. As for Ry, he's currently in the ICU, and as soon as we get him settled, I'll send someone for you." Kyle cried himself to sleep. Rick and Will took turned holding their son, so the other could stretch and wander around. It was around seven in the morning when a nurse came and escorted them to Charlie's room. He was given a small, quiet room on the psychiatric wing. Rick bent over and kissed his little boy on the forehead. Kyle began crying in Will's arms. Charlie looked peaceful. Rick noted that he wasn't even snoring. Rick took Charlie's hand and started rubbing it, as he took a seat next to the bed. There was a soft knock on the door and everyone turned to look. It was Detective Dunham. "I know this is a bad time, but I'm here to talk about what happened at Ry's last night." They were escorted to a private family room down the hall. Detective Dunham closed the door behind her and waited for everyone else to take a seat before she sat down. "Before I start, I want to say how sorry I am. I can't even imagine what you're going through." "Thank you," Rick said, hugging Kyle, who again, was in his lap. "Allow me to introduce myself--" "There's no need, Mr. Parker," Detective Dunham interjected. "I know who you are." Will looked a bit dejected and remained quiet. Dunham pulled out a small notebook, opened it and continued, "As I said, I'm here to talk about the event of last night. I want to start by saying that we're still waiting for medical results and forensics, so I don't have a lot of answers. I was actually hoping that Charlie was awake, but in lieu of that, I can tell you what we've pieced together, so far. "Officer Richardson arrived at the Doernbecker house around 8:36 P.M. after receiving a call from you, Mr. Parker. As he neared, he saw that door was ajar. No lights were on and there was no noise coming from inside. He called out and nobody answered, so he called for back up and proceeded into the residence. "As he walked into the living room..." Detective Dunham stopped, looked at Kyle and said, "I'm not sure the rest of this is appropriate for Kyle to hear. It gets rather graphic, I'm afraid." It took a lot of convincing, but his dads got Kyle to wait in Charlie's room. Once Kyle was out of ear shot, Detective Dunham continued, "As Officer Richardson entered the living room, he found Mrs. Doernbecker hanging by her neck from a ceiling fan. It appeared to him that she was already dead. The coroner's preliminary findings concluded that she died from strangulation as a result of the hanging and had died shortly before Officer Richardson arrived. "Officer Richardson continued to move throughout the house and entered Ry's room, where he found Ry, face down, badly wounded and unconscious. Curled up next to Ry was Charlie, who was covered in blood splatter, and unresponsive but conscious. "The officer moved about the rest of the house and found the body of Mr. Doernbecker in the master bedroom. We're still awaiting the official cause of death, but the preliminary report says that he died from a self-inflicted shot to the head." "What the fuck," Rick muttered. "Oh my God," Will said. "There was also a report of shots fired from a neighbor about 10 minutes before Officer Richardson arrived on the scene, and we believe it's safe to assume that was the shot that killed Mr. Doernbecker. "Our working theory is: Mrs. Doernbecker checked herself out of the rehab facility early yesterday afternoon. She then posted bail for her husband. Around 3:00 P.M. she called the District Attorney and demanded they drop the charges against her husband and accused both of you of manipulating Ry into making a false statement in an effort to kidnap him." "That's fucking bullshit!" Rick snapped. "We never believed her, and this, obviously, only proves it. So," Detective Dunham continued, "At some point between the phone call and the time Mrs. Doernbecker came for Ry, they had done drugs. We're still waiting for toxicology, but we found meth on the premises. We assume that they used before Ry came home. At some point, a fight broke out--" "It was after 8:04 P.M.," Will said. "And how do you know that?" "Ry called Will," Rick said. They explained the conversation and the demands they made with Mrs. Doernbecker before, and how Ry was acting during the call before hanging up. "Thank you," the detective said, as we finished taking down their statement. "What time did you notice Charlie was missing?" "To be honest," Rick said, as shame settled in. "None of us noticed. We guess it was right after the phone call." "We assumed he went to his room," Will added. "That would make sense, since Charlie wasn't injured. Anyway, given the new information, I'd say that a fight broke out right after Ry hung up and Charlie arrived. The part we're not sure about was what Charlie saw. Our working theory suggests that Charlie stumbled upon the bodies, got scared and laid down next to Ry. Worse case scenario is that Charlie witnessed some or maybe even all of the violence. We do know that he found Mr. Doernbecker's body and crawled from the master bedroom into Ry's room. There's a clear trail of blood streaks down the hall that are too small to have been Ry's." Rick broke down. The thought that his baby boy found a dead body was too much. Instinctively, Will put his arm around Rick, who didn't turn it away. "I know that this is a horrible time, but when Charlie wakes up and you think he's up to it, it would help us a lot if he could give us a statement. Anything he can say would help." "We'll be sure to call," Will said. "Mr. Parker," Detective Dunham, "I'm sure you're aware that since you're technically legal counsel for Ry, you are now legally responsible for him until another family member can be tracked down?" "Yes, Detective. I'm fully aware and more than willing to accept the responsibility." "Good, but given your criminal history--" "I've been working it throughout the night. Right now, my associate is preparing an emergency order making Rick temporary guardian. Once Ry wakes up, I'll get more information about his family and go from there...unless you have any information that will help?" "We have people looking for his next of kin; however, it seems pretty bleak at the moment." Rick collected himself and added, "I think Kyle might be able to help with that," and he left to get his son. "Is there anything you'd like to say now that we're alone?" Will asked. "Not really," Detective Dunham replied. "I did my homework and talked to ADA Marshall who confirmed your appeal dispositions. Right now, I'm more concerned with the cases I have, and hoping I won't have to add more before this is all said and done." Rick returned with Kyle, who told the detective about Ry's older brother and sister. Rick remembered the conversation he had with Mr. Doernbecker before the man's arrest and the fight at Halloween. He told the detective about Mrs. Doernebecker's sister and how Mr. Doernbecker may have been having an affair. "Oh," Will said, "is there anyway to conduct a paternity test? Ry's dad made the claim that Ry wasn't his son. I think Ry has the right to know if this is true or not, and if he isn't, then that will make custody a much more difficult issue." "I'm sure we can work it out," the detective said before leaving. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 49***
