Chapter 13 Dinner was awkward for the boys. Joey could tell Ry was irritated, and guessed it was because he and Joey were on Ry's bed fooling around. Charlie thought Ry was irritated for the same reason but also that Ry might have been jealous that it was he and Joey instead of him and Ry. Despite how close Charlie and Joey were, Charlie never mentioned the times he had sex with Ry. In fact, Charlie tried very hard to not bring it up, since it wasn't technically consensual. Though Ry had pretended to be asleep for most of it, Charlie never asked for Ry's permission. For a long time, Charlie blamed Justin's grooming and later abuse as the reason why Charlie did the things he did, and not just to Ry; however, as he grew older, he realized that he had always loved his eldest brother. At first, it was actual brotherly love, but the night Charlie found Ry close to death, things changed. Something in him needed Ry. It wasn't until Justin brought out Charlie's feelings regarding sex and intimacy that Charlie realized he was gay, just like his half-brother. I didn't create a conflict in him, like it would most kids, but his issues came from Ry being his real brother by that point. Sure, it was only because of some documents, but there was still more than that. He and Ry never talked about those sorts of things. Charlie guessed it was because of what Justin did, and how poorly it affected him. As much as he hated being homeless, it gave him the time to reflect on his life and how everything was connected. Ry busied himself with making dinner, while Joey and Ronda caught up. Since Bethany was still asleep, Charlie went into the kitchen. "Can we talk?" He said, standing near his brother but knowing better than to be in Ry's way. "About what?" Ry asked, pulling milk from the refrigerator. "About what you walked in on." "You said nothing happened, right?" "Yes." "So, what's there to talk about?" Ry wasn't making eye contact, which wasn't entirely unexpected, since he demanded a lot of focus when he cooked. "There's more to the situation than you saw." "I've had sex plenty of times to know what happens during it, so I don't need all the details." Charlie rolled his eyes. "Would you please just let me explain?" "Fine," Ry said, looking even more annoyed, "but you're going to help me, since you insist on being a distraction." "Whatever," Charlie said, as Ry pointed to a large sack of potatoes. "So, what am I not understanding?" Ry asked, while browning some ground lamb. "Remember the night I came home?" "Clearly, but what does that have to do with you and Joey having naked 'not' sex on my bed?" Charlie was about to lose it. Patience wasn't a virtue he had, but he needed Ry to understand. "If you let me finish, you'll understand." "Fine." "Anyway, I wasn't entirely passed out. I remember you giving me a sponge bath." "Still not getting it, baby bro." "Then shut the fuck up for half a goddamn second, will ya?" Charlie snapped, slamming his fist on the counter. "What's going on?" Ronda said, coming into the kitchen. "Nothing," both boys said. "It sure as hell didn't sound like 'nothing'." "I was teasing him," Ry offered. "I'm sorry, Charlie. Forgive me?" "Yeah," Charlie said, going along with the lie, though he was still irritated. To his mother, he said, "I'm sorry. You don't need to hang around. We'll be fine." Ronda didn't look like she wanted to leave but took Charlie's hint, nevertheless. "Just don't wake the baby," she said sternly before walking away. "Honestly, Charlie, you don't need to explain anything to me, and I'm sorry for my attitude. The meeting with Rick and Billy just has me twisted. I'm sorry I took it out on you. It's your room, too, and you can fuck whomever you want." Charlie sighed heavily, still very annoyed. "Can we talk later when you're not so irritating?" "You mean, 'irritable'." "Nope," Charlie said, putting down the vegetable peeler and kissing Ry on the cheek. "I know exactly what I said." And with that, Charlie walked out of the kitchen. Dinner was a quiet affair. Ronda and Ry filled Charlie in on the meeting. Charlie wasn't at all surprised that his dad didn't want to give up custody, but he thought the fight would've actually gone all the way to court. He still didn't want to see his dad and brother, but for the sake of the sacrifice his mother and other brother were making, Charlie agreed under the condition that Bethany not go. He was already going to feel stressed enough and didn't want to have to worry about his daughter as well. "I'll see what I can do," Ronda offered. "Are you staying the night, Joey?" "What?" Joey said, lost in his thoughts. "Oh, I don't want to impose." "Impose?" Ronda asked, confused. "You stay every night you have dinner here, and I thought you and Charlie might want to catch up." "They did some of that earlier," Ry offered. "It looked like it went well." Ry was actually very jealous, and it hurt him a lot that Charlie decided to use their bed. He did mean what he said to Charlie before, but it didn't stop him from feeling resentment and regret. "It's settled then," Ronda said with a smile. She enjoyed having Joey around. They actually had a great relationship. Joey had a supporting, mother figure he had always wanted, and Ronda had another gay son to fill the void Billy refused to hold. It wasn't ideal, but it also wasn't that unhealthy. At bedtime, Joey slept on the couch. He and Ronda decided to watch Mean Girls for the fiftieth time. Meanwhile, Ry and Charlie went to bed, as Ry and work in the morning, and Charlie needed to have his talk. When Ry came out of the bathroom, Charlie was naked and laying on the bedding. "This looks familiar." "Ha ha," Charlie said. "Are you seriously going to bust my balls all night?" "Isn't that why Joey's here?" "Ry, come on!" "Fine," Ry said, as he took off his clothes and laid next to his baby brother. "What do you want to talk about?" "This!" Charlie said, pointing at his dick. "Seriously?" Ry said, giving his brother an annoyed look. "You want me to bust your nut but not your balls?" Yes, Charlie thought, but said, "No. The night I came home, you gave me a sponge bath. You saw my dick and you saw what's different." "You don't have your foreskin anymore." "Yeah," Charlie said, feeling like progress was finally getting made. "So, earlier, Joey and I were going to mess around, but he saw what you did. He wouldn't let it go--" "The subject or your dick?" "The...subject," Charlie said, through gritted teeth. "Anyway," he continued, after a heavy sigh, "he wanted to know what happened. I didn't want to talk about it, so we got into a fight, and that's when you walked in." "Why are you telling me this?" Charlie looked at Ry with shock. "I thought you wanted to know what happened." He couldn't keep the hurt out of his voice. "I do, Charlie, but only when you're ready and not to justify you almost having sex on our bed. I haven't brought it up out of respect for your privacy. It's very difficult being your support person, because asking too many questions gets me chewed out, but not asking questions leaves you feeling unwanted. I haven't found that middle ground yet, so I'm sorry if it seems like I'm not concerned or interested. I just don't want to get yelled at or for you to run away again. "I love you so much, Charlie. And, yeah, I'll admit that I was a little jealous," Ry lied; he was very jealous. "But, we're not together. You can see and fuck whomever you want, and I should be able to, as well," though he definitely didn't want anyone else. And Charlie didn't want anyone else. "If that's how you feel...." Charlie was feeling very hurt, but he didn't dare say anything. It's my fault that we're not together, Charlie thought. I'm too broken for someone to love. "It doesn't matter how I feel, it's how it has to be." Ry didn't believe a word of it, but he didn't want Charlie to miss out on his life because of Ry's hangups. "Maybe I should move into Billy's old room," Charlie said, pulling away from Ry. "Mom's office is in there." "Then, I'll just share my old room. I should be with my daughter, anyway." Charlie got out of bed, got dressed and left the room. Both brothers cried themselves to sleep. Both wanted to go to the other, beg forgiveness and confess their mutual love, but neither could bring themselves to do it out of fear of being rejected. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 14***
