Rhonda, as per usual, wanted to do something special, but Ry made sure he had to pull a double shift at work to avoid any surprises she had in mind. "Ryland, why are you working on your birthday?" Marcus asked as he walked into the office. "You should be out celebrating with your family." "I am celebrating with my family; my work family." "You know what I mean." "I do, but you also know that I don't do anything but work on my birthday." "I do, but you have a baby at home now." "And she's with her grandmother, so are you going to bust my balls all night?" "Of course not, so I'll just say that family is important." "Not necessarily from my experience, Marcus. Speaking of family, your brother was here an hour or so ago looking for you." "What did that bastard want?" Ry chuckled. "He wanted to see how things were going here. Apparently, one of his kids just started working at the other location." "God help us all," Marcus said, crossing himself. "His kids are a menace to society. Did he say which one, because that could affect our bottom line?" "Diego, I think. I wasn't really paying attention." "Diego is the only good one out of the bunch, so we might be in good hands with that one. Have you met any of my brother's kids?" "Nope." "Good. They'll only get you in trouble. They're either in rehab, jail or pregnant." "Which one is Diego, then?" "None of them. He's the good son. He's gay, too, if you're looking for a boyfriend." "I'm not, thanks. I'm married to my job." "Who said anything about marriage? There's no harm in it, you know...." "Marcus! How many times do I have to go over what is and isn't appropriate at work?" "What?! It's my business, and I can't try to get my favorite employee married into the family--" "Oh my God, just stop! You're crazy!" Ry shook his head and rushed from the office. * * * Rollo watched Ry work. As much as he hated him, Rollo could at least appreciate the man's work ethic. He tried making friends, but it seemed too late for that. Ry didn't have much time nor respect for someone who wasn't pulling their weight or showing more than minimal effort. Rollo might have put in more effort if he really cared about the job, but his only goal was to get the money Will Parker stole from the gang, and he knew that one of Parker's kids had it. "Ryland!" Marcus called out. "Take a break." "I'm busy with this order." "No, you're not. Miguel can finish. You need to take a break, now." To Rollo, Marcus said, "And you need to hurry with those dishes. We're running low." "Aye, aye Captain." He didn't like Marcus anymore than he liked Ry, but Rollo still needed the job until he could get a solid plan together. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer, he constantly reminded himself. "Surprise!" Rollo heard from the kitchen. Deciding to cover his snooping, Rollo left with a bussing bin to collect more dishes. Ry was surrounded by a small group of people. Two guys, one white, one black, about Ry's age, then there was an older man and woman, the latter holding a baby. The scene looked awkward and forced. It was clear to him that Ry wasn't happy about the gathering but was being polite. The older man looked just as uncomfortable, while the two younger guys seemed happy and were holding hands. Faggots, Rollo said to himself. As much as he played gay to get what he wanted, he hated openly gay men...or at least that's what he told himself. The woman holding the baby looked old enough to be Ry's mother. She was reasonably attractive and had a hard look about her. For anyone who has done any serious amount of time behind bars, you can just recognize a fellow inmate when you see one, and Rollo was no stranger to the US prison system. He saw a former prisoner in the woman, which intrigued him. Ry was so straight-laced, Rollo wondered what he was going around such a person. He watched as the baby was passed around and noticed how nervous and uncertain the woman was when the older man was handed the baby, as if she was about to take the child away but stopped once seeing the tears of joy on the man's face. Was he a chomo? Rollo wondered. He could only imagine her hesitation might be from her thinking the guy was a child molester or something. Rollo tried recalling the information he found on Ryland to see if he could figure out who those people were, but he decided it wasn't worth the headache. Instead, he needed to focus on the recon. "David!" Marcus called out from the kitchen door. It took a moment for Rollo to remember the fake name used. He rolled his eyes and went back to the kitchen, thankful that Ry and his guests hadn't noticed. "What did I tell you about these dishes?" "I have no idea," Rollo replied dismissively. "Get in my office, now. I'm writing you up." "Don't bother. I quit." He removed his apron, threw it in Marcus's face, and left. His heart raced as he left the building towards his car. Sure, his PO wasn't going to be happy about the lack of job, but he honestly didn't give a fuck. He had a plan. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 25*** Don't forget that I have a new email address, and to forward any emails you may have already sent me. My new address is: niftyjhenry1988.2@gmail.com
