Chapter 4 Trevor pulled into the driveway with dinner. Although Billy's cooking skills had improved some, Trevor wasn't in the mood for whatever invention Billy thought was spaghetti. Instead he went to the cute, little Mexican place he loved and got a nice meal for the three of them. "Babe, I'm home," Trevor announced, arms full of bags. "Can I get a hand." "Coming!" Billy shouted from down the hall. The lanky, brown haired man jogged over to Trevor and kissed him as he took as many of the bags as he could. "What's all this?" "General supplies and a few gifts. Christmas is next month, so I thought I'd get a few things early." They set their bags on the table and greeted each other properly. "How's Dad?" "Had another nightmare," Billy sighed. "How's Charlie?" Damn, Trevor thought. He knew he wasn't going to be able to avoid the topic, especially since Billy was laying right next to him when Ronda called, but he didn't want to ruin their dinner before it happened. "He's okay. Better now that he's home with your mom and Ry." "I suppose," Billy said, looking disappointed. Despite their problems, Billy loved and missed his baby brother. Aside from their mother, Charlie was Billy's only other blood relative he had contact with. His biological father was killed by a cop, and Uncle Kenny died of a stroke a couple years prior. Nobody else from his family wanted anything to do with him. "Why did Mom need you to drive her? Couldn't she have waited till after the streets were cleared?" "No, it seemed like she really needed to get to the store. Luckily, I have a car that could do it." "What did she get?" Trevor didn't like lying and withholding information was just as good as lying to him. He refused to make a promise to keep Charlie's secret to himself, but he also didn't feel it was his place to tell Billy and Rick. "It was stuff for Charlie." "Drugs?" "No, not drugs," Trevor replied bitterly. "Why the fuck would I get drugs, let alone for Charlie? Besides, I may be a black man, but that doesn't mean I know where to get drugs. That would be like me asking if you know where to get a good bagel because you're Jewish." "Half-Jewish," Billy clarified, smiling and pulling Trevor back into his arms, "and I know where the best bagels in town are." "I still don't know where to get drugs, motherfucker. You owe me for that racist bullshit." "How can I repay you?" Billy asked, nibbling on Trevor's ear lobe. "That's a start," Trevor purred, grabbing Billy's ass and thinking of ways to destroy it later. "Don't you two ever stop?" A gruff yet playful voice called from the hall. "I'm insatiable," Billy said, nuzzling into Trevor's neck. "Don't we know it," Rick said, opening the bags. "Mexican, huh?" "It was either that or another one of Billy's one-pot things." "Rude," Billy mockingly exclaimed. He, like everyone else, knew his cooking was bad, though not as bad as his father's. Rick began to hand out containers and asked, "How's Ronda and Ry?" "They're okay. Nothing new since the last time I was there." "How's Charlie?" Trevor shot Billy a look of clear disappointment. Trevor asked Billy to not say anything till after he got home just in case it was bad news. Since the shootings a couple years ago, Rick had suffered a series of nervous breakdowns, even being briefly institutionalized. Charlie was always a touchy subject for him, to boot. "He seems okay, as well," Trevor replied. Billy slunk away and sat down. "I didn't have a lot of interaction with him, but he's alive and home." "He's not home," Rick countered. "He's not home till he's here with us. I'm his guardian." "Dad," Billy said gently, "we all know this, but we have to take things slowly. Not just for Charlie, but for you as well." "I'm not a fucking baby, Billy," Rick spat. "We know, Rick," Trevor said, calmly. "We don't know what kind of head-space Charlie is in or if he's still using drugs. We can't have him here if he's only going to upset and hurt you. For the moment, he's better off with Ry and Ronda. They've already talked about putting him back into rehab for the baby's sake." Trevor regretted the words the second they passed his lips. "Baby?" Billy and Rick asked in unison. "What baby?" Trevor sadly put down his fork and sighed. It took about an hour to explain what he knew, which really wasn't much. Both Rick and Billy interrupted him with questions he had no answers for, or they talked over each other so much it caused several spats. In the end, however, father and son sat in silence. They never questioned Charlie's sexuality, but assumed he was gay due to his relationship with Joey Bell, a friend of Charlie's since elementary school. It never occurred to them that Charlie might like girls, too, or maybe even exclusively. Trevor made a point that they weren't allowed to tell anyone they knew until Charlie was ready to tell them himself; unfortunately, his request fell on deaf ears. Billy wanted to go over and have a word with his brothers and mother, while also meeting his niece for the first time. Rick wanted to go over to tell Charlie how irresponsible he was and shouldn't have run away at all, then demand that Charlie move in with them. Because of Rick's attitude, Billy changed his mind and decided to accept Trevor's terms, at least for the moment. It took a lot more convincing to get Rick to drop it. From Rick's point of view, he wanted Charlie to remain a child as long as possible, given that his innocence was stolen from him at such a young age. Sadly, Rick wasn't able to convey that properly. His mind was a cluster fuck of thoughts and feelings he couldn't get a handle on. He had witnessed three people get murdered: An ex-girlfriend, whom he thought was pregnant with his baby, Charlie's abuser, who had been brutally tortured before being killed, and lastly, Billy's biological father, who tried to frame him for Justin's torture and murder. Will also threatened to expose Rick's and Billy's sexual relationship which had gone back to when Billy was 12-years-old. Rick suspected that Will might have also had Brenda killed, but he had no evidence to support it; it just seemed like something Will would've done. After dinner, Rick went back to his room. Although Trevor had known about him and Billy, Rick had felt like a third wheel ever since Trevor moved in earlier in the year. Both boys were in college, and they're relationship was stronger than ever. Billy and Rick still had sex, with Trevor's knowledge and consent, but Billy was acting more and more like the parent in their dynamic, which Rick resented. Rick had resorted to self-harm as a means to cope with his issues. Billy noticed the cuts and reported Rick to his therapist, who overreacted and put Rick in an institution to be evaluated. In the end, a judge gave Billy conservatorship over Rick. Since then, Billy had to take complete control of Rick's finances and most aspects of his life. It was during this time that Charlie's attitude got worse. He started skipping school, disobeying and started stealing sleeping pills. Ronda had gotten out of prison a few months later.. Rick believed she was the one who drove the wedge between him and his other boys. She forced Charlie into several rehab groups and one in-house center, which only made his attitude worse. Ry seemed to take Ronda's side in every argument and stopped coming around as much. Billy and Ry made arrangements for the old house to be put in Ry's name, while Billy kept what was once his father's house. Ry then moved Ronda in, despite Rick's protests. Then there was the night Charlie ran away. Rick didn't mean half of the things he said. He couldn't explain that his mind wasn't working right. That he loved Charlie no matter what, and that he only wanted the best for him. However, Ronda only wanted to play the Blame Game. She was the first to throw Justin in everyone's face. Billy was outraged and called her a controlling, manipulating cunt, and that she had no idea what was going on, because she was too busy rotting in prison instead of being the mom Charlie needed. Trevor and Ry joined forces to calm everyone down, but it took the police being called to get the factions to stop yelling. By the time the cops arrived, however, Charlie was long gone. Rick went home and cried for several days. The last time Charlie went missing for a long period of time, Justin had kidnapped and raped the little boy...his little boy. That's when the nightmares started up again. They were more memories of seeing Justin's mutilated form exit a crate; blackened holes where his eyes once were, a toothless, tongueless mouth, gaped open vocalizing his wordless screams, a head devoid of ears, a nose and lips. His naked form scarred from beatings and whippings, and an empty space where his castrated genitals once hung. Will admitted that he made Justin eat every part cut from his own flesh. In the dreams, like in reality, Will taunted Rick about the relationship with Billy. He then watched as Will shot Justin then forced Rick, at gunpoint, to throw Justin's body in a burning barrel. Rick could still smell the sweet, acrid scent of burning human flesh and hair. He would wake up screaming and gagging as if he had fully relived that night. A knock at the door shook Rick out of his pain and memories. "Come in," he called out. Trevor walked in with a cup of hot tea and Rick's medicine. Rick was to take two pills three times a day to help with his anxiety and depression. He didn't like the meds, but nobody seemed to like him without them. "I'm sorry that I caused you stress. Lying isn't something I'm good at." "It's one of the things we love about you," Rick said, downing the pills and sipping his tea. "I'm sorry for how I acted. Sometimes the words just fall out before I can stop them." "It's okay," Trevor said, taking a seat next to Rick on the bed. "Neither Billy nor I want to push you into something you're not ready for, and we don't want to push Charlie either. Both of you have been through a lot and we love you both very much. You and Charlie are a lot alike, and that can create a whole lot of conflict. "I think, once Charlie is settled, he'll come around. He'll need his dad now more than ever. You need to be strong for him, which means taking care of yourself, too. You can't do too much or you'll stretch yourself thin, which leads to a lot of problems for you. "Take this time to help work on yourself and to be ready for when Charlie is ready. It won't be at the same time, but we can't try to get the timing as close as we can for everyone's sake." "How did you get to be so smart?" Rick asked, wiping a tear from his eyes. "I get it mostly from my mom, but also having a lot of people I love and care about doesn't hurt." Trevor gave Rick a hug and left the room. ***Coming Soon, Chapter 5***
