"What's his system?" asked Adam.

"Where's Seth?" I asked, looking at Levi. I'd have thought that since he was Danny's son he'd be here with us.

"He's with Joe," Levi replied. "They're having Christmas with Kieran this year. Eric is with John."

"John?" Adam and I said at the same time. We smiled at each other.

"Doctor Primrose," Levi replied.

"But I thought his first name was Marcus," I said. "It's what's on the door of his office."

"His name is John Marcus Primrose," Levi explained. "He uses his middle name for business. Eric always called him John, so the rest of us have as well. Well, when we're not in school that is."

"I'm confused about something," I said. "On Doctor Primrose's desk there is a photograph of him with a woman and two boys. Who are they?"

"His wife and sons," Levi said with a smirk. "I know it's very confusing. Eric says that he spends about as much time with Chip and Glenn as he does with John. He says he's only seen Barbara once though."

"Do Chip and Glenn go to Elmhurst?" I asked.

"They do," said Caleb, though none of us looked at him and we definitely weren't talking to him. "Glenn is in my Chemistry class. I see Chip in gym a lot, too."

Thankfully Leo called us all to the dining room after that. I didn't want to say much of anything to Caleb and I was sure that Levi would have had harsh words for him if we hadn't been saved by Leo. We filed into the dining room and sat at the table in the places that Leo suggested. He'd put Caleb across the table from Levi and I saw Levi giving him a cold look. Leo brought in the roast chicken and vegetables and sat them in the center of the table. Then he took a seat next to Caleb.

There were candy canes hanging from the branches as well and the whole thing had been sprayed with fake snow. The three was topped with a sculpture of Santa Clause. Around and under the tree were so many wrapped boxes.

I wasn't exactly happy to find Caleb in the room but I did notice that he didn't look any happier to be there than I felt to have him there. I joined my father and benefactor on the sofa. From Danny I got computer software that was both educational and games. I got a watch just like the one he wore. It was silver links with a large face. Danny opened his gift from Nikos and inside was a very nice black leather trench coat. I noticed that Nikos got a really great looking gold necklace from Danny. We had a very nice Christmas dinner after that but considering it was just past eleven Nikos called it Christmas brunch. The food was amazing. There was a turkey, of course roasted to perfection along with macaroni and cheese, sage stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade noodles and buttered corn. The deserts that Leo had lined on the buffet table were amazing too. There were apple, cherry and pumpkin pies along with various different types of cookies, a chocolate cake and various kinds of homemade candy.

After dinner we were all lounging in the family room when Danny announced that Adam, Levi and I had to go with him to Joe's. I got up and put my coat on before kissing Nikos. Danny told him we'd be back after dinner and then he kissed Nikos, too. I followed Danny out of the house to the new car that he'd bought. It was a shiny black Lexus. He drove us to Joe's house but we didn't go inside. Instead we joined Joe and Steve's cars and followed them out of the city. We drove for nearly forty minutes before we pulled into a long driveway. There were empty cornfields on either side of the drive. About a mile from the road there was a very large white farmhouse with a black slate roof. I saw a big red barn and what looked like an apartment building behind it. I could see horses and cows and even pigs as we drove around the house to the back and parked. A man that looked almost exactly like Steve came out onto the porch and smiled at us as we all got out of our cars. I noticed then that Danny, Joe and Steve had presents in the trunks of their cars. They got those and we went inside the farm house where Adam and I were introduced to Liam McAllister and we shook his hands.

"It's very nice to meet the two of you," he said. He sounded a lot like Steve, too. "As you may have noticed, Steven and I are twins. Come on in and take a seat at the table. The boys have almost got dinner ready."

The dining room was nice with dark wood paneled walls and a hardwood floor. A very long table sat in the center of the room with a hutch and china cabinet along the opposite wall. The doorway to the kitchen separated them. We sat at the table where two other boys who looked a lot like Steve and Liam were already sitting. As I sat down Sean walked out of the kitchen with a platter of ham in his hands. He didn't look any of us in the eye as he sat it in the center of the table and walked back out of the room. Two other boys came in after him with glasses and a large jug of tea. One put the glasses in front of us while the other filled them with tea. They came back a few minutes later. This time the boy who'd had tea now had milk. They performed the same set up again. Then another boy came in with two bowls of food. One was filled with mashed potatoes and the other had gravy. He put them to the left of the ham platter and left the room while Sean came in with two bowls as well. He had green beans and stuffing. One of the other boys came in with a basket of rolls and a tub of butter.

"This all looks great, Liam," Joe said as the boys left the room. "I see your boys are looking good as ever."

"Boys, say hello to everyone and introduce yourselves to your cousins," Liam said.

"Hello, Uncles," said the first boy. He was a bit older than I was with the trademark McAllister dark hair and eyes. "My name is Lucas, but my friends call me Luke."

"Hello, Uncles and cousins," said the second boy who was a bit closer to Levi's age. "It's good to see you again. My name is Damon."

We got down to eating then. Joe discussed the farm with Liam and talked about how Sean was fitting in with the staff. I had learned that the four boys, including Sean would work on the farm, go to school on the farm and live on the farm until they turned eighteen. Then they would be given a check for one thousand dollars and dropped off at the bus station in town. The family would never have anything to do with them again after that.

After dinner Danny took me on a tour of the farm. I saw that the boys that had served us dinner were now dressed for the weather in work gear. They were feeding animals, repairing fences and the like. Danny never even looked at them. It was clear that to him they were scenery. He showed me the inside of what had looked like an apartment building. I saw that there were four very narrow rooms on the ground floor to the left of the entrance. Each had a mattress, a blanket and a pillow. There was nothing else in there. Across the hall were two bathrooms with toilets, sinks and shower stalls that were barely large enough for one person. One room that was almost twice the size of the other had clothing hanging from rods in various sizes. There were baskets of white boxers and socks. Several pairs of boots lined the wall. There were coats and coveralls in various sizes as well.

"They're lives here are all about work, Josh," Danny said. "They work all day long. They have school after their morning chores and then they work until the sun goes down. They bathe and sleep and start over the next day. They don't get Christmas presents or birthday presents and they don't get time off. It's a hard life but better than what they would have lived through before they came here."

"Better?" I asked.

"You don't know the situations they were rescued from," he said. "It may only be marginally better in some cases but it is better."

"And Luke and Damon?" I asked.

"They are Liam's biological children," he said. "Liam is not a boy lover, Josh. He respects what the rest of us are doing, but he is all about making sure his farm works. His wife, Ella died two years ago. It was cancer. The boys go to Elmhurst just like the rest of you. They're good boys and you'll get along with them fine. Just keep it in your pants where those two are concerned. Liam wouldn't like it if they were having sex with any of the other boys at school."

"What about Social Services?" I asked, remembering that a girl and her brother were taken from their mother by them a year or so ago. It had been the talk of the school.

"Each boy has a bedroom inside the house," he explained. "They're coached on what to say and they say what they're told to say. It works, Josh. It isn't ideal and I don't like the way they live but they rejected the lives we tried to give them. In Sean's case you know why he's here."

We left the farm shortly after handing out presents. I got more sweaters from Liam and his sons as did Adam and Levi. I was silent as we drove back to Nikos's house. I couldn't get over the sight of the rooms that those boys slept in. Was the fact that they weren't like the rest of us a good enough reason to make them live the lives they were living? I didn't know. I guess I just had to trust Danny that the lives they were living now were better than the lives they had been living.
