Apparently nothing could have pleased them more. They were ecstatic until she mentioned that we wanted a small wedding. There were a few seconds of silence which ended with William saying, "Preposterous! Your mother will take care of the whole thing. We'll call you back in a few minutes and tell you the date." Linda replied, "We'll set our own wedding date," but discovered she was speaking to a dead phone. Her father had hung up on her. "Hold my hand," she told me. "I'm going to need moral support." I sat beside her, holding one of her hands in both of mine as she called her parents back. She replied to her father's "Hello" with "Listen! this is our wedding. We'll set our own wedding date. And we're having a small wedding." There was a short silence before her mother began to speak. Apparently her father had handed her the receiver. Her mother pleaded for a large wedding, giving reason after reason why we should agree. I watched Linda wilt under the onslaught. The need to invite people her father did business with was the deciding factor. Finally, Linda said, "Ok. Make it as large as you want. But one thing. Dave and his entire family are coming." The silence on the other end was longer this time. "Are you out of your mind?" suddenly erupted from the receiver. Her father was back on the phone. "Whose wedding is this?" Linda asked. "Yours, of course! But think of what people will say!" "If it's our wedding, we'll decide who comes. And if they don't come, neither will we." Her father kept her on the phone for ten minutes alternately arguing with her and yelling at her. She just held the phone away from her ear as we listened together. When he finally ran out of steam, she said to him, "This is the way it's going to be. Dave and his entire family are coming or we'll elope and send out announcements that we've done it. Your choice." After another silence, her father said, "Saturday, September 10." "I'll call Dave and his parents and tell them to put it on their calendar." We heard a noise which could only have been the receiver on the other end being slammed down onto its cradle. Then there was a dial tone. "Guess he didn't like that," I said. "It's the first argument we have ever had which he didn't win." "About time." "I think so too." A week later we went to spend the weekend at her parents' house. Her mother wanted her to pick out a pattern for her wedding dress. Her mother's dressmaker was going to sew it. Mike had managed to escape because it was his weekend to stay with Dave. I told Linda, "I might give Dave a call and see if I can stay with him too." She just laughed at me. "That your way of saying it won't be as bad as I think it will." "No. It'll be much worse than you're expecting." And she laughed again. The trouble started when we arrived. When we went upstairs to deposit our luggage, her mother showed us to separate bedrooms. "Mother, Charlie's staying in my room." And so saying, she beckoned with her finger and I followed her into the room. Barely two minutes later her father came into the bedroom saying, "I will not have this in my house!" "Let's go, Charlie. Looks like we're not staying." I was putting our luggage into the trunk of the car when William came out of the house. I could see Grace standing in the doorway. I wondered what role she had played in getting him to come outside. "Be reasonable!" he said to Linda, who was getting into the passenger side of the car. "No," she told him as she sat down and slammed the door. He tapped on the window until she rolled it down part way. "What will people think?" "About what?" I noticed that she continued to face forward as she answered him. "Your staying in a hotel." "We're not staying in a hotel. We're going home." "But what about plans for the wedding?" "Charlie and I plan to get married. The rest is your business." "We've already begun telling people about the wedding." "Not my problem." "If you stay here in the same room, we'll have to keep it a secret. What will people think?" "They'll probably think I slept with my first husband before we were married and now I'm doing the same thing with my second husband." She turned her head to look at him. "And you know, if you hadn't been so determined to make Dave pay for my being pregnant, hardly anyone would have known." Her head snapped back forward and she rolled the window up. William stood beside the car wringing his hands. Suddenly the expression on his face changed. He began to tap on the window again. He tapped for quite a while before she opened it. "You're not pregnant, are you?" he hissed. She turned her head to look at him. "No, but I'll be glad to tell people I am if that'll make you happy. And I could look very pregnant on September 10th regardless." William stood up and began wringing his hands again. Linda continued to sit in the car facing forward. Seeing that she had left the window open, I decided negotiations weren't over yet. I stayed behind the car with the trunk open so I wouldn't interfere with what Linda was doing. Suddenly William bent down and said, "What if we just don't tell anyone you're sleeping together?" "It's nobody else's business anyhow. Including yours." "Then come back in the house and we'll say no more about it." His tone of voice suggested he was beginning to think he was back in control. She got out of the car and looked straight at him. "You shouldn't have said anything about it in the first place." Her tone of voice changed completely as she turned to me and asked, "Charlie, would you mind bringing our luggage back into the house?" The look William gave me as I walked past him with our bags told me that while she might have heard the last of it, I certainly hadn't. I didn't know him well, but I knew him well enough to know he wasn't a graceful loser. However, even though we were alone several other times, it wasn't until the next day when the dressmaker had come and Linda and her mother were definitely out of the way that he brought the subject up again. "I would have expected better of you," he said suddenly as we were sitting in the family room watching television. "Beg pardon?" I said, even though I knew what he meant. "Knowing your father, I wouldn't have expected you to corrupt my daughter in this way." "As she pointed out, she slept with her first husband before she married him. I'd say the blame for that, if there is any, lies squarely with you. You are, after all, the one who raised her. And since we're about to be married, you shouldn't be surprised that she's now sleeping with me." I didn't see any point in mentioning that we had begun to sleep together before I had asked her to marry me. His face turned deep red and he actually seemed to be unable to speak. I waited until he had gotten control of himself again. "Don't mention her ex-husband in this house again!" He practically yelled it. In a calm voice, I replied, "I'll say what I like whether it suits you or not. With Linda's help, I've been discovering that Dave's a nice guy. I'm thinking of asking him to be my best man." I really thought he might have a stroke. His color deepened even more and he seemed to be having trouble breathing. Again I waited since there was little I could do for him medically. After a while he sat forward in his chair and glared at me as he said, "You'll turn this wedding into a spectacle." "No, you're the one doing that. We'd be satisfied with a small wedding with family and close friends. People we care about and who care about us will know why we've made the choices we have. You want an audience. It's having people there who don't know us that'll turn it into a spectacle." He dropped the subject as if it had never been mentioned and went on. "I can't believe you're paying that man for the house after all I did to be sure Linda got it in the settlement. He was always able to get whatever he wanted from her. She must have you twisted around her little finger for you to have agreed to that." "Let me see if I have this right. Dave can get whatever he wants from Linda. Linda can get whatever she wants from me. You think Dave wants his house back. Or failing that, he wants to be paid for it. So you think Dave got Linda to work on me. "But it was my idea to pay him for the house once we decided to get married, not Linda's and not Dave's. I told Linda what I thought, and she told Dave. Linda didn't need to be convinced. She was ashamed of the way you'd savaged Dave in the divorce settlement. But Dave did need a little convincing. He still thinks of Linda as part of his family, and Mike certainly is his family. He was willing to continue providing the roof over their heads even if he didn't get to live under it himself." I slid forward on the sofa so my face was closer to his. "But I guess I should thank you for engineering their divorce, because if you hadn't, then she wouldn't be marrying me. And I don't mind telling you, of the two of us, Dave and me, I strongly suspect Dave is the better man." Apparently that was the final straw. He practically jumped from his chair and left the room. I didn't see him again for the rest of the afternoon. About an hour later Linda joined me on the sofa. "Picked out your pattern?" "We finally settled on one that made Mother and me both happy. It's a lot more dress than I wanted and a lot less than she did, so I suppose we compromised." "Do I get to see it?" "You'll have to come to the wedding for that." "If your father doesn't kill me, I'll be there." I went on to tell her about our conversation. "Serves him right. That's the way he treated Dave right from the start, but Dave was seventeen and couldn't fight back." "If I hadn't gotten to like Dave so much, I could be jealous over a statement like that." Actually, like Dave or not, I was feeling a little jealous. "Don't. Dave and I aren't in love any more. Nothing romantic, anyhow. He's turned out to be a really good friend to me when he didn't have any reason to be. I feel guilty over the way he's been treated. I'm glad you got some of his own back for him by standing up to Father like that. And you're wrong about one thing. He's not the better man." When I pulled back from the kiss I had to give her for that, I said, "I'm not particularly sleepy, but if you feel like going up to the bedroom, I'm sure we could do something together that your father'd disapprove of." "Sounds wonderful. Let's do it." About forty-five minutes later, as we were lying nude on the bed with my head just above her breasts and my right leg intertwined with hers, she asked, "Can you stand any more this weekend?" "Why, what's going to happen?" I asked as I ran my fingertip along the inside of her vaginal lips. Her natural lubrication was still plentiful, but my own cum was beginning to seep out of her as well. I was dipping my finger into it and using it as an additional lubrication. I had found that she could have several orgasms, particularly if I gave them to her with my mouth. I had learned what would keep her level of excitement up while we enjoyed the afterglow of our joint orgasm. It didn't matter to me that I wouldn't cum the second time with her. I had also found, much to my surprise, that I liked the taste of my own cum on her as I brought her off the second time. "The rest of the family is coming for Sunday dinner," she told me once I'd removed my finger from her clitoris. "I'd like to meet them." "Don't count on it. The smart thing might be to give Dave that call now and see if you can go there tomorrow." Instead I started licking my cum from the various places I had spread it. She had her second orgasm a few minutes later and, since I continued to move my tongue against her clitoris, a third one after that. Bill, Linda's brother, and his wife, also named Linda, arrived late Sunday morning. They had brought their children with them, a boy of seven or eight and twin boys who looked to be four or five years old. I was surprised they had also brought a black Lab since William didn't strike me as the type who would allow dogs in the house. As I was introduced to the boys, one of the twins told me the dog's name was Roger. The older boy, Jerry, was very disappointed when Linda told him Mike wasn't there. Bill seemed quite likeable, as did his wife. I had a long conversation with him that gave us the opportunity to get acquainted. Fortunately for both of us, he was nothing like his father. Just after noon Linda's older sister Sue arrived with her husband Tony and their two daughters. Mike had already told me Dave called the husband Tony-the-echo because he could be counted on to agree with whatever William said. Mike had a few other things to say about him as well. I took an instant dislike to him, and I didn't think it was because I had been predisposed to do so. The word "slimy" occurred to me shortly after I met him. When dinner was ready, the three boys were served at a table in the kitchen but the girls were allowed to sit at the table in the dining room with the adults. Linda explained to me that all the children, Mike included, had started at the children's table and had graduated to the adult table one by one as they got old enough to have proper table manners. I was surprised to see Roger being fed on the floor by the children's table at the same time as the children themselves. When I remarked on it to Linda as we seated ourselves, she said, "Don't ask. I'll tell you later." The purpose of the dinner, I was told, was to give the rest of the family a chance to meet me. Conversation, however, was controlled by William, who made pronouncements with which everyone was invited to agree. There was to be no discussion because the matter was decided as soon as William had finished speaking. And when he did finish, Tony repeated what he had said, often nearly word for word. I could understand Dave calling him an echo. Several other less flattering terms to describe him came to my mind. The others rarely spoke unless a question was directed to them. I answered the three things I was asked. After the meal, the men went to the living room while the women and the two girls cleared the table and prepared dessert. William enthroned himself in a large wingback chair. The rest of us were allowed to sit wherever we wanted. Bill and I sat side by side on the sofa. I half expected Tony to sink to the floor at William's feet. We were barely settled when Roger came running in from the kitchen followed closely by the twins. They passed through the living room and disappeared out the front door. Never having raised a dog, I used Roger as a topic of conversation with Bill. I wondered how difficult it was to housetrain a dog and what problems there were in giving children the age of the twins responsibility for caring for an animal. "He never needed to be housetrained," Bill told me. "Father gave him to the twins for Christmas. Actually, he gave him to Pat, the younger twin, but he's really both boys' dog." I noticed William bristle at Bill's statement. I wondered what he could possibly find to object to in what Bill had said. "Right from the first, the boys seemed to know when he needed to go out. He's never had an accident. They've never forgotten to feed him or keep his water bowl filled. But from what I've heard, that isn't the way it usually goes with kids and animals. We've been very surprised by how it's worked out. And we're worried about what will happen when they start school. The three of them haven't been separated since Christmas morning when Roger showed up under the tree." William bristled again at the mention of Christmas. I couldn't resist. "It's amazing they've taken such good care of their dog, isn't it, William?" "Those two boys are completely undisciplined!" he exclaimed. "They've seemed pretty well behaved to me. In fact, it's amazing that boys that age stayed at their table for the time it took the adults to finish their meal. They were surely finished eating long before we were. Am I missing something here?" "Father had an unpleasant experience with the boys because of the dog on Christmas morning," Bill said. I noticed he didn't look at any of us as he spoke. "And I'll tell you something else," Tony said out of nowhere. "You're really going to have your hands full with Linda's son. That boy needs discipline badly." "I've known him for a while now, and I've never noticed a problem with him. He seems very well behaved to me," I told him. "He has no respect for his elders. I'm amazed Father didn't backhand him for the disrespectful way Mike treated him when he was here for Christmas. For that matter, I don't know why I didn't do it myself." Now it was my turn to bristle. "I don't know you very well, Tony. But I'm going to tell you this so we get started on the right foot with each other. I'm going to be Mike's stepfather soon. If he needs to be disciplined, then either his father will do it or I will. But I advise you and anyone else who might have the idea that they can hit him whenever it suits them, they'll have me to answer to. I will personally beat the living shit out of any man who lays a hand on that boy. And if I should find I'm not capable of doing it alone, I'm sure I'll be able to enlist the aid of his father in carrying out my promise. Is that perfectly clear?" The women chose that moment to come in from the kitchen. One look at the tense faces that greeted them told them things had not been going well in the living room. Linda was the first to speak. "Charlie, I was thinking we ought to start home since it's such a long drive." "I'm going to see what happened to the twins and Roger. Want to come along, Linda?" His wife practically ran for the front door, but Bill was through it first. I stood up and followed Linda up to the bedroom to get our luggage. "Want to tell me now or in the car?" "In the car. It'll give me a chance to cool off." As I was following Linda back down the stairs, I began to hear Tony speaking. As I got further down, I heard him say, ". . . sleeping together, huh? Well, what can you expect after she had to get married the first time." Since Linda was in front of me, she must have heard that and more. She glared at both William and Tony as she walked over to her mother, hugged her, and kissed her cheek. Then she turned to her father. "Just couldn't keep your mouth shut, could you?" she told him before turning away and walking toward her older sister. I started straight for Tony, who actually cringed before he saw I was putting out my hand to shake his rather than to hit him. Since he outweighed me considerably, I was amused by the cowardice of his reaction. I couldn't think of anything pleasant to say to him, so I told him, "Now we've finally met," and let it go at that. To William I said, "We'll be in touch about the details for the wedding," as I shook his hand. Over my shoulder I heard Linda say, "Unless we change our minds and make plans of our own in the meantime." William's face turned an angry red but he didn't say anything. We met Bill and his Linda as we went from the house to the car. My Linda asked them to come to dinner sometime soon so they would actually have a chance to get to know me. They both seemed pleased to be asked. And then we were finally in the car and away from there. "You were right," I told Linda. "It was much worse than I was expecting."
