19 - Palm Springs Family - Apart Monday Luke

It is also a 'Coming of Age' story, but no gay boy can truly 'come of age' until he deals with his sexuality... These boys are all very lucky, because they know that their dads and brothers will support them in that journey. This chapter continues the sometimes uncertain path to young adulthood... for all of them.

This chapter also includes a new milestone in the boys' sexual 'coming of age', and it will be a controversial one for many. It will involve experiencing something for the first time, almost by accident, that isn't always approved of.

And many will criticize the dads for allowing it, but they appreciate this time in the boys' lives as a time for them to learn, a time to safely experiment, a time to see what fits and what doesn't, and they're trying very hard to let the boys determine their own path... as much as possible... although they would be much happier if they'd wait four or five years.

And to the boys, it's just another amazing experience on the path to becoming young men. Please don't judge them harshly.

Day 10, 2nd Monday Afternoon

Michael, Luke, Aiden, Daniel, Diego

Exploring

Michael and Luke finish their shopping trip, and actually have a great time together.

They have quite a bit of stuff to get inside, but as soon as they come in with stuff the other boys that are around, and not wet in the pool, all come to help. None of them even put on clothes since the driveway is private, thanks to the big sliding gate. They do slip on their sandals or shoes. They've learned how hot the ground and concrete can get in the sun.

Michael had a thought while they were shopping. He'll run it by the dads, but is hopeful they'll say 'yes'... even though it might be unfair to the other boys. Damn this IS hard.

After helping to start get everything put away, Michael goes to find the dads. He finds them sitting together sipping margaritas. He goes over and sits down. Jared tells him that Corey and Steve arrived safely, which is a relief.

Michael, looking at Alex and Kevin, says, "Guys, I'm trying to find things to do with Luke... other than the bedroom," which at least gets a couple understanding chuckles. He continues,

"I was thinking it'd be fun doing something kinda like a date... I thought about going to a movie or dinner or something, but it looks like that would be unfair to the other boys. I'm not sure what to do here. Oh, BTW, we bought enough fresh pizzas at Costco for dinner... just in case."

The four dads look at each other, but nobody says anything.

Finally, Alex rises to the occasion, "Yeah, we've talked about that a little bit too, but didn't really come up with any answers either. I'd say... go do what you want, but maybe not make a big point of it with the other boys... they all look like they're doing fine in the pool, and with iPads and stuff.

"I don't think it's fair to say you can't do things with just Luke... or Corey either, just because we can't get them out of the pool... or dressed. So I think if you want to go on a date... go. Be careful in public of course... you obviously have to kinda act like brothers and not boyfriends. I know that's not fair, but..."

Michael nods and says kinda sadly, "Yeah, I know, but it was fine shopping today and the other day. I really do think of him like a little brother... maybe. I don't know. It's complicated," which gets an understanding a chuckle from all the dads.

Michael continues, "I didn't want to mention anything to Luke until I was sure it was ok. Sorry this is... so..."

Kevin chimes in, "Complicated? Yeah, it is, but it's fine Michael. If you guys want to do something with Luke or Steve... or each other... go ahead and do it," to which all the dads agree.

They sit and chat for a while. Eventually Michael says he'll mention it to Luke, who at the moment is helping put things away in the kitchen. As soon as he sees the other boys come outside who were helping, he figures Luke's done, and goes inside, but he doesn't find Luke anywhere.

He goes to Luke and Steve's room, but all he finds are the two dildos lying on the bed. That may not be the best place to leave those, he thinks... so he takes them with him.

He goes thru most of the house, then decides to check his room, where he finds the door closed and Luke lying naked on the bed, with the box of dildos beside him. 'Little shit', he says out loud while laughing his ass off. He holds the dildos behind his back, and drops them into the box as he takes it off the bed and puts it on the floor.

Lying down beside Luke he turns to him, kisses him chastely and says, "Well, I was trying to come up with something for us to do... like maybe go on a date, but I see you already came up with something," while reaching over and pulling out one of the other 'not huge' dildos.

He can see the tug of war going on in Luke's head... big head... Sex or a date. That's a hard choice. Michael's sorta waiting to see steam come out Luke's ears, he's trying so hard to decide.

Luke, being Luke, comes up with, "Well, we could have sex now, then go on a date a little later, then come back and have sex again... maybe all night," which causes Michael to totally lose it laughing.

"You little horn dog," Michael says while starting to tickle Luke... for just a bit.

Michael thinks for a bit and then says, "How about this... WE have to get lunch ready for everybody... How about after that we walk downtown for a while and I'll show you around a little. It won't take much time, Palms Springs is small. We can eat here or I'll treat you to lunch downtown. You Decide!" which gets a laugh from Luke.

Luke thinks for a minute and says, "Michael, I don't want you spending your money on me. We can eat here, it doesn't matter. Besides, I'd feel guilty not taking all my brothers. Sorry."

Michael laughs, and says, "I just asked your dads if doing something with just you would be unfair to the other boys. You're amazing Luke. I love you," which gets Michael a nice kiss. But, of course, none of this helps with a plan.

Michael, not giving up, says, "Ok. How about if we ask if any of the brothers want to go with us. We can walk downtown and look around. They may want to stay here in the pool anyway, and then it won't be a problem," which Luke thinks is a good idea.

Luke says, "Ok."

Something occurs to Michael, "Oh BTW, Steve and Corey arrived safely at their house."

Luke's face has a noticeable reaction to that news... He gets a big smile and looks less stressed than he did before. He says, "Great, I was worried."

Michael grabs him and hugs him tight, then he and Luke go out and ask the dads about inviting the boys, explaining that Luke doesn't think it's fair to take just him, which makes the dads even prouder of Luke than they already are.

They ask if he's really willing to take them all. He says, "No problem, but 'volunteers' are always welcome," which gets a few laughs, but no volunteers.

Luke doesn't see anything happening, so he asks, "Should I go ask?"

Michael chuckles and says 'sure', with a smile and chuckle at Luke's impatience.

Luke goes over to the pool and asks if anybody wants to go with them and walk downtown. They all complain that it's hot and they're fine in the pool, so now Luke and Michael have nothing to be guilty about.

He tells them, "Ok... no problem" and goes back over to Michael and repeats what they told him.

So Michael and Luke decide to fix lunch then walk downtown and see what they can find to do. From their house to 'downtown' is probably a 20 minute walk, and it's only mid 90s F (~34 ºC) today... and no, that's not hot, at least not for summer in the desert.

As we all love to say, "It's a dry heat." Although when it's much over 100 ºF (39 ºC) it doesn't help too much to tell yourself that.

The boys are really not going to be happy when it reaches 110 ºF (43 ºC), which it will pretty soon and regularly... and as high as 122 ºF (50 ºC), although usually only a couple times per summer. That's hot, and it feels kinda like a big convection oven... dry or not.

I think us 'desert rats', as we like to call ourselves, get a perverse pleasure out of saying we love it... and mostly we do.

As soon as they walk into the kitchen, Aiden and his two helpers come in and ask if they can fix lunch since the two of them want to walk downtown.

Luke asks, "Are you sure you don't want to go with us? We can go look around and have lunch?"

Daniel says they talked about it, but don't want to intrude, which makes Luke and Michael feel like crap. Michael and Luke assure them that they'd love for them to come with them... they can all fix an easy lunch and then walk downtown together and look around, which gets all three boys a big smile. So they have a plan.

Michael asks if any of the other boys want to eat downtown, but they just look at each other and finally somewhat timidly Diego says,"no," which makes Michael suspicious.

Michael says, "Guys, if you're worried about the money... please don't. We all eat out here a lot... it's not a problem... I promise. I know all the dads will be just fine with it. And we'd love for you to go with us. Please?" which gets him a couple hugs...And they eventually say 'yes'.

They put out a nice spread of sandwiches and a few other things. They ask again if anybody else wants to go, they all say no... pretty loudly.

The dads all laugh and say they'll clean up after lunch, so the five go get dressed and head out the door.

And they have a great time... they talk, and kid each other... and the boys, never having seen much of Palm Springs other than two houses and two pools, have lots of questions.

Michael knows a few of the houses that used to be owned by Hollywood people and stars. He mentions a lot of the stars who used to own houses in this neighborhood, and points out a couple that he knows about as they walk by them... all the boys are amazed. They had even heard of one or two of them.

They walk toward the main street thru downtown, which is about six blocks from their house.

Michael explains just as they turn onto the main street, "The Street that runs thru the middle of Palm Springs, this one, is Palm Canyon Drive.

"The street one block East, over that way, away from the Mountain, is Indian Canyon Drive, which separates the town from the land owned by the Native American Tribe that was here when the railroads came through this area... in the 1800s."

"I've heard that many years ago the Native Americans weren't allowed to use Palm Canyon, and had to go in and out of town on Indian Canyon Drive, which is how it got it's name... I don't know whether that's true or not," which gets looks of shock from all the boys, and of course leads to lots of questions about the 'Indians' in the area.

Michael quickly adds, "Guys, that word is used by some as an insult. Perhaps a better way of saying it is 'Native Americans'.

"The various tribes own half of this valley, where Palm Springs is... The whole valley is divided into a big checkerboard pattern, each square is one mile square, and the Native American tribes own half the squares... so they own half of the whole valley, including half of Palm Springs.

"The main tribe in Palm Springs is 'Aqua Caliente', and I'm sure Diego or Daniel can tell us what that means," and of course they immediately say 'hot water,' and Michael chuckles.

"That's right... of course," smiling at Daniel, who gave the answer. "This valley has a lot of earthquakes (which gets really big eyes), and that means there are a lot of earthquake faults... lines in the earth where the ground moves.

"Water comes to the surface along some of those faults, and some of the springs are hot water. The tribal members that lived here hundreds of years ago used that hot water for everyday life.

"Palm Springs and some other cities in the valley have natural hot springs, where people can go and enjoy the springs. We should all do that one day... the only problem is... we'll all have to wear bathing suits," which gets laughs and a mixed reaction.

They turn right onto Palm Canyon Drive and start to get into the 'downtown' area. Walking down the street a little further they come to Blue Coyote Grill, which Michael says is a good Mexican Restaurant.

Laughing a bit, he asks if any of the boys like Mexican food, even though he's pretty sure Diego and Daniel will say 'yes'.

Aiden and Luke both say they haven't really ever had it, other than a taco or something. Diego and Daniel laugh and say they certainly do, so after a little prodding from Michael about not feeling guilty if they eat there, they all decide to try it for lunch.

All of the boys act like they're scared to death that he'll spend any money on them... which depresses Michael... although Ken and Jared's boys aren't as bad about that.

They go in and are seated immediately... the busboy quickly brings them water and chips and salsa, which, based on their really big smiles, is a huge hit with everybody.

They start going over the menu. Michael knows what everything is, but he defers to Daniel and Diego, saying, "Daniel and Diego are the experts," which makes both of them smile big.

When the waiter, Javier, comes over and greets everyone in English, he of course notices the two very cute Latino twins, Diego and Daniel, and speaks to them in Spanish, which delights them, and makes the other boys a little envious because they get to have a long conversation with the very cute sexy waiter, who seems like he's enjoying it as much as they are. Michael's a little envious too.

They all end up ordering different things, deferring a lot to Daniel and Diego for what to order, so everybody can try a little from each. They all have a great time eating and talking and just being a family. All the boys decide they love Mexican food, which is no surprise to Daniel and Diego, and they all really love Palm Springs...

It's easy to walk, the weather is good, even though it's hot, they say, the people are friendly, and Blue Coyote has a misting system which makes sitting outside much nicer in summer, like most restaurants here.

And one thing about summer in Palm Springs is that lots of guys and gals wear minimal clothes, which is great on cute guys... gals too, if that's your thing... They see lots of sexy guys in tank tops and shorts.

Later, when Michael goes to the restroom, he sees Javier and uses that as an excuse to stop by to ask for the check.

Javier asks if he speaks Spanish. He says no, but adds that the boys' dads speak a little Spanish and are going to get a Spanish tutor for them and any of their brothers that are interested, and that at least him and the two dads all plan to learn Spanish with Daniel and Diego, which amazes Javier, who explains that he's working to finish his teaching degree, and being Latino, speaks fluent Spanish...

He gives Michael a card, and asks him to please consider him as a tutor. Michael shakes his hand and thanks him and assures him he'll talk to the dads as soon as he gets home... and he might have held onto his hand just a tad longer than necessary. Javier did not object.

Javier also explains that he asked about Spanish because Daniel and Diego said they had just been adopted, and that Michael was their big brother, which almost makes Michael cry.

Javier tells him how great it is that they adopted the boys and are willing to help them keep up with their Spanish.

Michael assures him they totally love all the boys and will do anything they can to help them have a great life. He also thinks the waiter is 'muy muy guapo' (very very handsome)... but he didn't say that out loud... yet.

Javier makes a big point to come back and speak with all of them, in English, and especially Diego and Daniel, in English and Spanish, before they all leave. The very cute waiter is the topic of conversation for quite a few minutes after they leave.

All of them really enjoy their lunch, which the boys talk about for the rest of the day... making a few brothers that didn't go a little jealous.

One of the amazing things all the boys notice is that a fair number of guys, and a few girls, walk around Palm Springs holding hands, like it's no big deal.

They ask Michael about that, and he says that it's usually not a problem, but that if it ever is, the Palm Springs Police are very quick to respond if anybody causes a problem.

Daniel, Diego and Aiden look at each other, wanting desperately to hold hands, but afraid to, especially Daniel and Diego since they're twins. Aiden sees Daniel and Diego's faces and walks between them, taking one of each of their hands.

He says, not very loud, "I know it's not the same as holding each other's hands. Sorry," which causes Daniel and Diego's eyes to get a little red for a second. They give him a quick hug... and even dare to kiss him on the cheek... very quickly.

When nobody much is around, Michael reaches over and holds Luke's hand... or sometimes one of the others' too, depending on who's walking next to him. But his hand rarely leaves Luke's shoulder or back in any case.

They walk further downtown, and Michael makes sure to take them by the Marilyn Monroe statue (link), and they all get a big kick out of walking under her and looking up her dress... Hey, lots of old people do that too. Even gay guys. We did too.

Michael asks if any of them know who she was. They don't.

They eventually find an outdoor cafe and sit to have something to drink and chat. All the boys are just amazed at how many gay boys and couples are out and about.

More than a few come up to speak with Michael... people he knows one way or the other, and some of them are very sexy and cute. Most introduce themselves to the boys and ask Michael about them... who just says they're all his little brothers, which makes all of them very happy, especially Aiden. Several speak a few words of Spanish with Daniel and Diego, which makes them very happy.

They even stop for ice cream before heading back home. All told, it was a great day and a great chance to spend some normal time together.

When they get home and get in the pool naked, and the boys start talking about their day, all the other boys make it very clear they want to go next time... which Michael promises he and Corey will do after he gets back.

He and the dads all smile a bit to themselves, thinking they might actually get the boys out of the pool... eventually.

Thanks to Michael getting enough pizza to cook for everybody, a little before 4:30PM, Michael tells Luke he's going to start dinner, and Luke, Aiden and his helpers immediately say they'll help.

Aiden and his helpers offer to get everything other than the pizza ready, including a salad. They end up eating a little early, not that the boys ever complain about eating early.

The 'Aiden crew' also stays around to help clean up.

So, now... Michael has no more excuses, which Luke has already thought about too...

As soon as they're alone in the kitchen, he kisses Michael and gives him his best 'bedroom eyes', not that an almost thirteen year old should ever have those... but he does.

Michael gets the hint, so they go check with the dads to see if anything else needs to be done. It doesn't, which makes Luke very happy... and the dads are all grinning because they know exactly what Luke wants too, but it's ok... they do too... well, not with Luke, but yeah... although they generally never leave the boys alone in the pool.

Michael sits for a minute and asks Luke to sit across his legs since there's no seat free beside them. Luke looks like he just won the jackpot. He leans back against his chest, and Michael wraps his arms tight around him, looking perfectly content to just sit there.

Michael has Javier's card with him and tells the dads that he's getting his teaching degree, and spent some time talking to Diego and Daniel in Spanish, and is very interested in tutoring the boys in Spanish.

The dads call the three boys over to ask what they thought of Javier.

They all liked him a lot and both Daniel and Diego say he's really cute and that his Spanish is "perfect." Dad Alex asks if he's gay and the boys say they don't know. Michael says he thinks so... even mentioning that he told them the boys have two dads, and that neither objected to holding onto hands a little longer than necessary, which gets a knowing chuckle out of the dads.

When no other excuses come to mind, Michael takes Luke's hand and leads him to his bedroom, although to anybody watching it's a toss-up as to who is leading whom...

2nd Monday Evening

Michael and Luke

Michael is as turned on as he's ever been... and certainly more unsure of himself than he's ever been... in his entire life.

He loves Luke and finds him way more attractive and sexy than he ever should, and he knows Luke is at that age where sex seems like the most important thing in the world, but it's not. It's a hell of a lot of fun, but it's nowhere close to the most important thing in the world.

Truth be told, he and Corey both are both worried that this is all about sex for Luke and Steve... and neither can decide if that would be good or bad.

On one hand, they hope it's more than sex, because neither of them want the boys to fixate on just sex. It'll also hurt both Michael's and Corey's feelings if that's all it is.

But on the other hand it would be a lot simpler if it is all just about sex, because they'll eventually grow out of that, and even find others to fill their places.

And it will totally kill both of them if the boys end up being hurt over all this, and the feelings they're all having are... complicated.

As soon as they walk into the room, Luke shuts and locks the door.

Locked doors in the house are pretty rare... or used to be.

Usually, just 'close the door if you want privacy' works best, although honestly, none of them bothered even closing a door before the boys, except for the bathroom. But, Michael figures it'll take a while for the boys to get comfortable with that, given the normal angst and taboo of sex.

Luke turns to Michael, and Michael is expecting him to attack at any moment...

Instead, Luke walks over, takes his face gently in his hands, rises up a bit on his toes and kisses him... no tongue, and says,

"Thank you Michael. Today was great. Steve and I have both said that our best times with you and Corey are the times that everything just seems normal. It seems like both... no... ALL of our lives aren't normal anymore since we lost our parents... and sister.

"It was really nice just walking downtown with you and my brothers. I didn't feel like Luke the orphan. I just felt like Luke who's out with somebody he loves... with his big brother. Thank You... I love you so much Michael," which causes tears to run down his face.

Michael is so taken aback by this from Luke that he kinda loses it for a moment too, and with a few tears he just hugs Luke as tight as he can.

He's never really thought about what it must be like for these boys... well... I mean yes, he's thought about it. They've all thought about it... a lot. Especially in the beginning, before they all met. They were all three depressed as hell just reading Luke's and Steve's story, and what they'd been thru.

And they didn't even know about Diego and Daniel until they got there. And their pain because of what they've been thru is certainly no better.

And then later, worrying themselves sick over the whole 'gay dad' issue and wondering what the boys would think about that. And all the worry the three of them had about trying to not let the boys find out that they're all three in a relationship.

Michael had thought for a long time that he'd end up having to move out and leave Alex and Kevin, because he didn't think there was any way they could ever tell the boys about the three of them. But thanks to Luke's honesty, that turned out to be a non-issue.

But once they all got past that, he really did think that everything would just be 'normal' for the boys. For the first time since this all started, he finally gets it.

He finally understands that none of these boys feel like their life will ever be 'normal' again, after what they've been through. What hell must that be like for these boys?

In fact, thinking about it, it occurs to him that several boys have used the word 'normal' to describe something... just the other day, talking about their feelings about Michael and Corey with their dads.

Luke and Steve have both used that word, often in connection with Michael and Corey. It finally dawns on Michael that what he and Corey thought was all about sex, maybe is as much about wanting people in their lives again that they love so they can just feel normal again.

Michael leads Luke over to the bed... They're both naked, but right now this isn't about sex. He gently gets Luke to just lie with him on the bed.

Looking into Luke's eyes, he sees a boy that has been so horribly hurt by things in his life, things that he never had any control of at all. Hell, Luke's never had any control of anything in his entire life.

They just lie there, holding each other and looking into each other's eyes, and Michael finally says, "Luke, I'm so, so sorry for everything that has happened to all of you guys. I had no idea how hard this is for all of you.

"Please know how much we all love you guys... Any of us will do anything we can for you. We love you all Luke. I love you so much. I don't ever want to lose you," which causes Luke to get teary along with Michael.

They do that for a few minutes and eventually recover enough to smile at each other a bit.

Luke is able to say, "We don't want to lose you either Michael... any of you. Michael, when we met you guys... we didn't have a clue what it would mean. You've all been so great to us. I know we say a lot that we love you, but we really do... and not just you. And not just because of sex, Michael."

Luke continues shakily, "I'll tell you a secret... (takes a long deep breath and immediately his eyes are red) for both Steve and me... maybe the other boys too... I don't know.

"We both have really bad dreams sometimes. I always know when Steve is having that dream... he makes little jerking motions, almost like he's trying to run away from something... and then he starts whimpering... almost crying. He says I do the same thing."

"But both of our dreams... are... (Luke starts tearing more)... Michael, we dream that we wake up and all THIS was just a dream," which causes Luke to cry more.

"Michael, we dream we're back with our parents, and all this was just a dream. You were just a dream Michael," which really causes Luke to sob out loud.

Thru sobs Luke says, "We wake up... in the dream... and we know we'll never see you again... and I'll never see Steve again... or Steve won't see me again... or Corey... or our dads... or our brothers," at which point Luke is relentlessly sobbing.

After a while, he barely continues,

"When that happens, we slowly wake each other up. And when we wake up and realize it was just a dream, we grab each other and hold each other so tight... and kiss each other," as he just continues to sob.

He finally tries to continue, "But Michael, after that Steve feels so guilty. We both know we'd rather be here with you... all... than back with our parents.

"My parents were drunks and drug users and terrible people, especially my sperm donor, so I don't feel guilty at all that I'd rather be here than with them... But Michael, it makes Steve feel really guilty that he'd rather be here.

"It's really hard Michael. It's so scary to think that you'll go away like our parents," and Luke just hugs Michael as tight as he's ever hugged him... and continues sobbing.

This is almost more than Michael can bare, and he's crying almost as much as Luke. "Oh my god, Luke, I had no idea. What can I do to help? What can any of us do? I'm so, so sorry...

"I thought that once we were past the whole 'gay dad' thing that everything would be great... but I obviously didn't know what you guys are going thru. Is there anything I can do to help Luke?"

Luke smiles sadly and says thru more tears, "You already do Michael, just by being you. I said that morning before... your little kiss at the pool (little smile)... that we all fell in love with you that day at the Amusement Park. We did Michael. I fell so much in love with you that day just because of how great you are.

"And I don't even mean it's about sex... neither of us ever thought we'd get to have sex with you... It's about love, Michael. I won't ever stop loving you... even if you never want to have sex again... it's not just about sex Michael. I love you so much," at which point they both completely lose it.

Unbeknownst to Michael and Luke, the four dads are getting something to drink in the kitchen, not far from the door to Michael's room... listening to both of them almost sobbing. They all stand looking at each other and the door to Michael's room, without a clue about what they should do.

They know absolutely that Michael will never hurt Luke, or any of the boys. Corey either. But they can't imagine what's going on to make both of them cry like that.

Kevin can't take it any more... He walks over to the door, gently knocks a couple times and says, "Guys? Is everything all right? Do you need anything?"

Michael and Luke look at each other thru their tears. Michael doesn't want to divulge what Luke just told him in private, but knows somebody has to say something.

Luke sees the... something... in Michael's face and gets off the bed and goes to the door and opens it.

He sees dad Kevin standing there with tears... and lunges for him and hugs him as tight as he's ever hugged anybody... for a long, long time, just sobbing against his neck, while Kevin glances at Michael sitting up on the bed, rubbing his eyes and fighting his own tears.

He just rubs Luke's back gently, figuring he'll eventually tell them what's going on.

Luke eventually raises up enough to see the other dads and looks dad Kevin in the eyes, and says,

"I love you all so much... we all do... (sobbing) I was just telling Michael that Steve and I have terrible dreams... almost every night... where we dream that you... this... Steve... everything... is just a dream, and we're back with our parents... or in the group home.

"They started at the group home... where we both dream that we can't find each other... and panic. It seems like it goes on forever, looking for each other, and then we wake up and we're back with our old families... and know we'll never see each other again.
