24 - Palm Springs Family - Apart Wednesday Steve

The boys are listed oldest to youngest, but all are currently twelve. Luke, Nick and Steve will be the first three to turn 13... in the upcoming months.

Others will up show occasionally, but not be a major part of the story, like...

Day 12 Since Meeting

Day 9 in Palm Springs

Steve wakes up second. He's lying with Corey's arm around him from behind. Chad's lying there looking Steve in the eyes when he wakes up. Steve smiles a little and so does Chad, who leans forward and kisses him gently. He whispers, "You want to get up?" to which Steve nods.

Getting out of bed without waking up the other two isn't going to be easy, as Steve and Chad are in the middle. But being as slow and quiet as possible, they manage somehow to get out of the bed. They're both naked, so they just go back to the living room, and sit down against each other on the sofa.

Steve's feeling a little emotional after the previous night, and thinking a lot about Corey... and Luke and Michael. Chad sees something in Steve's face that concerns him, "Steve. Is everything ok? You look... worried, or something."

Steve just smiles at him and says, "Actually everything's great Chad. I was just thinking about how much Luke's and my life has changed... in less than two weeks. Two weeks ago, we were both still in a group home, waiting to meet our two possible new gay dads. We were both scared to death about what would happen, would they love us, would they really adopt us, would they adopt our two brothers... it was a terrible thing that we had to get thru, but Chad we're both so incredibly lucky to be adopted by our dads and Michael.

"And then, as soon as we got back to Palm Springs, we met Corey and his brothers and their dads. And then we met you two. It's just amazing how much our lives have changed Chad. We were both scared to death that we'd be separated. Neither Luke or I ever thought we'd even have a family again, much less such great friends," he kinda trails off..

Chad sits silent for a few minutes and then says, "That's a lot of change in less than two weeks," to which Steve just nods, and a tear runs down his face.

Chad trusts Steve a lot, so he eventually smiles and says, "I know how you feel Steve... I was adopted about a year ago, and I never thought I'd ever be happy again after losing my parents. I love my dads so much... they adopted my two brothers about three months ago. I love all of them, but everything is a bit complicated at the moment with us too... With me falling in love with Chris, plus, we're going to be moving pretty soon," which causes Steve to panic.

Steve says, "Oh no... please say you're staying in Palm Springs and not moving away," with a little panic in his voice.

Chad figures out why, and quickly adds, "Ohh... no, no, just to a new neighborhood in Palm Springs. My dads said that we're moving so we'll be living near several of their friends... Sorry. They looked for a long time before they found the house they're buying," which causes Steve to relax a bit.

He thinks about it for a while and finally asks, "Chad... can I ask... what do you do all day?" which gets a confused look from him.

Steve chuckles and says, "I mean... about all we've done since getting back to Palm Springs... nine days ago... is hang out naked in the pool all day... and then... He thinks a bit and says, "Yeah, I get it. Now that I'm sixteen, I'm thinking of trying to find some job I can do part time. School will start back in a couple months, so I don't want to interfere with that. Steve thinks for a bit and finally says, "Yeah, me too. I used to assume I'd go to college, but then my parents died... I kinda gave that up, but our dads have promised we can, and now... I don't know. I do like doing things with computers and technology, but... I don't have a clue what I want to do... if I don't do that. After some debate, they decide to play tourist in LA again today.

One place Steve read about as a kid, meaning much younger than twelve, was the La Brea Tar Pits. He thought they were fascinating, and had always wanted to see them.

While they're talking about what to do, he makes an offhand remark about them. He knows they're somewhere in California, but figures they probably aren't nearby. Turns out they're very near West Hollywood of all things, which is kinda on the other side of LA from where they are at the moment, but not a terrible drive... well, except pretty much anywhere in LA is always a terrible drive.

So Steve gets to see the La Brea tarpits (tarpits). He's just fascinated with all the fossils, and he really enjoyed seeing the family of prehistoric elephants that they recreated in a big tarpit, although it's sad to realize they died there. They spend hours going thru and looking at everything.

Doing this helps Steve put things in perspective too. He really misses doing things other than sitting around all day... or JUST having sex a lot. Not that he's ready to give up sex, but he knows he's got to find a balance... and other things to do. But he really enjoys having to actually think about things for a while... When they leave he has the biggest smile of all.

Corey had heard about the tarpits too, but didn't know much about them, and he didn't have a clue where they were. He enjoys going thru everything on display, and is very happy at how much it excites Steve.

Steve even sought out one of the cute docents and asked some very detailed questions about some of the exhibits. Corey isn't sure who was happier... Steve, him or the docent working there. He even had a few others listening to some of their discussions. It makes him even more determined to help persuade Steve to never give up on his amazing future... somehow.

While they're at the La Brea Tarpits, Steve stops at a rack of brochures about things to do in Los Angeles. He sees one for the Griffith Observatory and picks it up, which Corey sees. Corey just stands and watches how much his face lights up as he's looking thru the brochure.

He manages to get Chris and Chad aside without Steve noticing and quietly asks, "Guys, I really want to encourage Steve to do... anything he's interested in. Would you have any interest in going to Griffith Observatory? I've been and it's really interesting to see, and they have great planetarium," hoping they'll be interested.

Chad immediately says he'd like to go, and Chris agrees. They decide to surprise Steve, after they have lunch.

After they leave the tarpits, they head to Chinatown for lunch, and spend a lot of time looking around and eating. Steve had never been anywhere remotely like that, and was both fascinated and a little intimidated by a decent size area like this with a lot of the signage in a language he can't read, which makes him more determined to try to learn Spanish with Daniel and Diego. He's pretty sure he can't tackle learning Chinese.

Everybody, not just Steve, found the 'tar pits' amazing, and totally surprised they're so close to West Hollywood. Who knew? Apparently none of the four did.

Chinatown is basically an overpriced tourist trap, but what the hell... they had a great time just being with each other, and found a good restaurant and had some great Chinese Food, which everybody totally enjoyed.

When they head for the car Corey says to everybody, "Guys, I have one more place I'd like to go... is that ok?

Steve immediately asks excitedly, "Where are we going?" but Corey just smiles big and says, "It's a surprise," which gets a chuckle out of everybody. Steve of course doesn't know that Chris and Chad already know, but he happily agrees, really enjoying the chance to see as much of LA as possible... a place he never thought he'd even get to see in his life... before.

The Observatory is in Griffith Park, kinda north-north west of LA, and it quickly becomes pretty obvious they're heading up to the top of a fairly high 'hill'. Steve thinks it's probably just to be able to see out over LA, which he thinks is a great idea.

They keep driving up the hill, and as they get closer to the top Steve sees the dome of the observatory, which excites him. He got to go to a planetarium once, with a school group, and he really loved it... although he doesn't know if they have one here, but just the chance to maybe see the telescope is exciting enough.

They get there and park and get out and head inside. As soon as they get closer Steve sees a sign for the planetarium, and blurts out how much he loved the show he saw on his school trip... so the first thing Corey does is they head over to see when the next show is.

They spend a good bit of time looking at everything after the show, and get to take a tour of the telescope room. Steve spends lot of time talking about it on the way back to Corey's house. It makes Corey very glad they went... Steve too. And he got some great pictures.

It was a fun day with great friends.

This trip really makes Steve realize exactly how little he's doing at home, basically the pool and sex. And he knows he's got to change that. All of that's fine, but it's not good to do nothing but that. Plus, he's really starting to find it pretty boring.

The big problem is, "What can he do? And how can he get Luke and his other brothers interested in more than that?"

It's not like Palm Springs has a lake they can row across, or even a forest they can visit.
