Some construction company needed an expert for projects beyond schedule or something like that. If he accepted, it'd mean anywhere from three to six months down under. It wasn't an easy decision, but it had to be made quickly, before they went with someone else. Greg checked out all the details, and if he wouldn't be able to take us, he'd turn it down. But the company wanted him, and made arrangements to provide us with a house for the duration in Melbourne, and other accommodations in New Zealand. A tutor for me and Sean, too. All expenses paid. With a hefty paycheck, it was irresistible. Besides, if Greg had turned it down, Sean would never have forgiven him. He'd wanted to go to Australia ever since we saw 'The Rescuers Down Under' at the cinema in Belfast. And so we went, Greg, Sean, me, Nate, Walt and Adam. Unlike our last trip across an ocean, we flew this time. We'd been on planes before, with all the hopping between coasts, but still this was exciting. Nothing but water beneath us, until we reached Hawaii. Greg had us leave a week early so we could enjoy the islands...but for me, it was anything but enjoyable. I hated the heat, and there was nothing for me to do. Sean and Nate, on the other hand, had a blast. Volleyball, hula lessons, Sean even went water skiing. The most fun I had was when we drove by the place they filmed Magnum, PI. I never want to go back there. When my Hawaiian hell was over, we finally arrived in Oz. As a city, I like Melbourne. It's a grand place, and it reminded me of New York, a little, in some odd way. Sydney may be more "touristy," but Melbourne, to me, has much more substance. Back then, I loved it best of all the cities we'd lived in. A couple days after we were settled into a pretty nice house provided by the company, our tutor arrived. "Miss Annie," we called her. She was very nice, and we liked her a lot, especially her accent, and the stories she told us about growing up with the Moriori people in the Chatham Islands. Her father was an oceanographer and she told us a lot of stories about that, too. Sean developed a crush on her pretty quickly. I tried not to make fun of him for it, but sometimes my youth got the better of me. Greg liked her too, as it turns out, but I'll talk about that later. It only took Greg two months in Melbourne to have things straightened out to the client's satisfaction, and then we went on to New Zealand. We all thought we'd been staying at another house in Wellington, but Greg had been keeping a surprise for us. We were going to stay with Annie's family on the South Island. They had a vineyard there, near a town called Blenheim, and it was just grand. That area of New Zealand has fairly warm summers, and pretty crisp winters...and it was winter. One of the best things about spending the summer months south of the equator is that, well, it's winter down under. As much of winter as it ever gets, at any rate. So I was in heaven. Nice and chilly, but not too cold. And lots of room to run, and hike, and we all just had a ball. Greg was kept busy and spent most of the week in Wellington - a city plagued by tremors (why build a town right on a fault line?) - and then on Thursday would fly by helicopter back to the South Island, and have the weekend with us. It was a fantastic arrangement, and helped inspire my enduring love for that country. Some of my fondest memories are from New Zealand, like my twelfth birthday (22 June). I remember that day so well. It almost seemed cold enough to snow, and I absolutely loved it. It was such a change from both Ireland and the States, it felt like November. We didn't have a birthday party planned, per my request, though Greg had tried in vain to talk me into it for weeks. Good thing he knew better than to plan a surprise party, I would have been devastated. Greg gave me an awesome dark green sweater, looked like something an old sailor would wear, and I wore it all day. I got other clothes, too, and from Nate and Walt, a couple action figures (which of course *they* wanted to play with as soon as I opened them!). Sean? Well, Sean got me something I couldn't have expected. It was a Sherlock Holmes board game, '221B' it was called. He found it in a second-hand shop in Wellington. And even though it was missing a couple pieces, I loved it. I'd been reading Sherlock Holmes stories ever since I could remember, and actually playing out new ones in a game was simply awesome. It's amazing to look back and think how much joy that game brought me - I was such an odd kid. Heh. But amidst the natural excitement of turning twelve, which seemed like a really big deal at the time, I kept thinking about my mother, and about Ben. It had been weeks since his last letter, and I was really worried. Sean knew what was on my mind, and went out of his way to cheer me up and keep me distracted all day. He organized a really massive game of Capture the Flag with Jack and Caleb (Anne's nephews) and a bunch of other kids. Nathan, only seven, got to play, too. Before we started, we all picked GI Joe-style codenames, and Sean proclaimed me the general. That was really something. To top it off, he opened his backpack and pulled out something - he had carved me a wooden sword! He'd worked on it for weeks, and it was as nearly a flawless thing as I had ever seen. Sean had even carved my name into the handle. My heart swelled with pride, and I barely held back tears. It meant a lot to me that my big brother, my hero, had spent so much time and effort for me, because he didn't want me to be sad on my birthday. So we all ran around in the fields and woods for hours, getting muddy and dirty, picking up cuts and bruises and scrapes, and even a few scars. It was great fun, and I was able to almost forget everything else and just be happy for the day. And when we came back in after dusk, there was hot cocoa and a fire waiting for us. Nate was so worn out that he fell asleep on the couch. Sean and I curled up in quilt by the fireplace, and we watched "Newsies" and played cards until I fell asleep on his shoulder. I dozed for a long time, and he told me later that I didn't even stir when he carried me to our room, and tucked me in. Even if I hadn't been to tired, I don't think we would have fooled around that night. It was like the last hurrah of my childhood. In an even more profound way, it was the end of Sean's childhood, too. He met a girl called Sophie, one of Anne's students, and they fell into a pretty whirlwind romance. She was a real nice girl, and didn't really treat me like a little kid. I could see why Sean liked her, I guess, so it was hard to be jealous. They spent a lot of time together, but Sean never ignored me, or the little ones. Even after he lost his virginity that July, he didn't change, really. And neither did our nightly activities. I was curious about everything, and he explained it all, though he wasn't really the kiss-and-tell type and he respected Sophie enough not to blab all the details, especially to his kid brother. That had to be mum's lasting influence. They both knew it wouldn't last - even though once or twice he wistfully talked to me about coming back to marry her someday - but he seemed happy. Another thing that made him happy was the fun he was having with Jack and Caleb. Caleb was Sean's age, and Jack a year older. I liked the two of them - they were cool, even though they did call me "squirt" sometimes. Unlike his liaisons with Sophie, Sean would give me all the details of his encounters with Jack and Caleb. I was never sure how it started - probably just from talking about girls - but over the time we were there, they'd progressed from jerking off together, to blowjobs, to a lot more. I was really curious, and thought a lot about asking to fool around with them, too, but at the same time I was scared of "doing it" with other boys. I knew Sean would never let anything bad happen, but it was still a daunting prospect. So, for the most part, I opted to just listen to his stories about what they'd do, usually while we jerked off together, or while we cuddled after. Caleb was the first guy to fuck Sean. By that time I definitely understood the concept - was getting to be fascinated by it, in fact - but when Sean told me about it, thinking about Caleb putting his dick up my big bro's arse, it seemed so...alien. And at twelve, I had no idea that this made Sean bisexual. It any event, his stories about Caleb and Jack turned me on more than what he told me about Sophie (that was more of an 'intellectual exercise'). Sean told me that fucking Caleb (which he did, too) was totally different from fucking Sophie. He couldn't tell me which he liked better. Jack got in on the action, too, and the stories Sean told me intrigued me more and more. I definitely didn't *want* to get fucked by them, it sounded like it would hurt a lot...but more and more I fantasized about them fucking Sean, and about Sean fucking me. I knew that was something I wanted to happen, sometime, when I was older, maybe. In the meantime, I was really curious about it all, and wanted to watch them do it. When asked Sean if I could, he looked like he got punched in the face, he was so surprised. He told me he didn't think it was a good idea, that the other guys might think it was weird, and they'd be afraid of getting in trouble. And so, reluctantly, I dropped the subject. But it didn't stop my fantasies! Eventually, though, October rolled around. Greg's job was finished, and we had to head home, back to Maryland. All tolled, we spent six months down under - two in Australia, and four in New Zealand. It was hard for Sean saying goodbye to Sophie, I know, and hard for all of us to say goodbye to Jack and Caleb, who we'd come to think of as our "Kiwi Cousins." Hardest of all was saying goodbye to Annie, who really had become another member of the family. We kept in touch, though, and she came to visit once or twice a year, sometimes bringing Caleb and Jack. Now, as to whether it was more us kids, or Greg she was visiting, well, I guess it was a bit of both... But that's years off, yet, and there's plenty of ground to cover before I get there. Including a surprise that Greg and Sean had been working on for a long time... ----- Sorry about the relative lack of sex this chapter. There's plenty to come, though, so don't worry. The next chapter is in the works, and should be up soon. If you'd like to comment or chat, my email address is patriotspectre@yahoo.com. Cheers! - Tim
