MIKE About that time I saw Sean make a dash to his room with no clothes on. It sure is a good thing this is an all male house hold. I figured Sean would be ready in just a couple of minutes so I started to go see if Steve, who was still in our bedroom, was ready. As I went around the breakfast bar I gave Colby a couple of pats on the back. I was shocked when Colby winced and stopped in my tracks. I looked Colby in the eyes and asked, "What's wrong with your back?" Colby wouldn't look me in the eyes and said, "Nothing, I'm just a little sore from playing basketball yesterday." Being in law enforcement for several years, I knew Colby was lying. I stepped up to Colby and pulled open the back of his shirt and I was horrified by what I saw. I let go of Colby's shirt and then pulled his chin up so I could look in him in the eyes. When Colby's eyes met mine he had tears running down his face. He knew I had figured out his secret. ********* Chapter 12 I pulled Colby into hug and he just buried his face in my chest. I looked over my shoulder to see if Connor and Hunter had noticed anything. They were both still watching cartoons in the living room and hadn't noticed anything and Sean was still in his bedroom. I pulled Colby off the stool and walked him to our bedroom just as Steve was coming out of the door. Steve just looked at me with a "what the fuck" look on his face as I walked Colby over to our bed and had him sit down on the edge. I pulled a chair up and sat down in it so I was sitting at the same level as Colby. I had to use my hand to pull Colby's eyes off the ground. Once his eyes met mine, in a very quiet voice, I said, "Colby, do you trust me?" He just nodded his head up and down. I continued, "Colby, I need you to tell me the truth about how you got those marks on your back." Colby's eyes went back to the floor. I looked up at Steve who was standing there in disbelief. In a voice just above a whisper and with tears running down his face Colby said, "It was my dad. He was drunk Friday night when I asked if I could come over to your house to play basketball with Sean on Saturday. He got really pissed and said he was tired of me spending so much time with Sean. He called you and Steve fags and said Sean was probably a fag as well and said I couldn't ever come over here again. I got mad and started to yell back at him and told him that Sean was my best friend. That really pissed him off and he started calling me a fag and then he took his belt off and started to hit me with it. I fell down on the floor and he just put his foot on me to hold me down and kept hitting me with the belt. I didn't have a shirt on so it left a lot of marks. He was still passed out yesterday afternoon so I just came over and then called my mom and told her I was staying over at Hunter's house." When Colby finished he was crying again, so I pulled him into a hug being careful not to touch his back. As I was hugging Colby I looked up at Steve who was standing next to us with his mouth hanging open. After Colby got his emotions under control I looked him in the eyes and said, "Colby, you know that since I'm a cop, I have to report this. I also need to look at your back. I want to make sure that you don't need to see a doctor. Is that alright?" Colby again just nodded his head and stood up. He turned away from me as I gently pulled the back of his shirt up over his shoulders. What I saw made my blood boil. Colby's back was covered with welts and you could see the belt marks going across Colby's back. On several of the marks you could see the imprint of a belt buckle. Steve just stood there in disbelief with tears running down his face. I pulled Colby's shirt down and I told him, "Go in the bathroom and wash your face and then when you are ready we will go get something to eat." After Colby closed the door to the bathroom I stood up and took Steve into my arms. I have seen this type of thing many times in my carrier as a cop, but I don't thing Steve has ever seen anything like this. Steve was almost crying as he whispered into my ear, "How can any father do that to their son? What do we do now?" I pulled back so I could look into Steve's eyes and said, "First thing we do is make sure that Colby knows that we love him and he can trust us. We have to make sure that he is safe. We will have to report this to the police and Child Protective Services. I will make a call to the PD and ask the Youth Services Detective to meet us at the PD. He will contact CPS and have them meet us there also." About that time Colby walked out of the bathroom and looked a lot better. I kneeled down and told Colby the same things I told Steve. I reminded him that we all loved him and we would make sure he was safe. I then asked him if he was ready to go get something to eat and he nodded his head again. When we went back out in the living room, Connor and Hunter were still engrossed in the cartoon that they were watching and Sean was just walking out of his room. I don't think Sean had noticed anything yet so I said, "Alright guys if you want breakfast you need to get your butts in the truck." Connor and Hunter jumped up and took off running for the door, followed by Sean and Colby. Steve and I followed the boys out the front door. We ended up eating at I-Hop. After we all had ordered, I excused myself from the table and walked outside to make a phone call. I got in touch with Detective Smith from our Youth Services division. After briefing him on what Colby had told me and what I had seen, Det. Smith said to meet him at the PD in an hour. Det. Smith also said he would contact CPS so they could be there when we arrived. When I looked through the window of the restaurant I could see Sean staring at me. He had a look on his face that made me think he knew something was up, but hadn't figured it out yet. When I got back to the table our breakfast was just arriving. The boys were talking back and forth with each other. Sean and Connor were telling everyone how much they liked going horse back riding with their grandparents and how they were looking forward to going down to San Antonio to see them on the horse ranch they worked on. I sat down next to Steve and gave him a nod to let him know everything was set up with Det. Smith. After breakfast we headed back to the house. I told the boys that I got a phone call during breakfast and needed to go into work to talk with a Detective about a case I was helping him with. I said, "Colby and Hunter, why don't you guys grab your stuff and I will give you a ride home on my way to the PD." They both grabbed their stuff and said their goodbyes to Sean, Connor and Steve, telling them they would see them tomorrow. Steve walked out with me to the truck as Colby and Hunter were walking out in front of us. Before I got in the truck, Steve grabbed my hand turning me around and said, "Call me as soon as you can." I told him I would as I climbed behind the wheel. Luckily, Hunter's house was on the way and a couple of blocks from Colby's house so he wouldn't get suspicious when I didn't drop Colby off. After we left Hunter's house I looked over at Colby and said, "We need to go to the PD and talk with a friend of mine about what your dad did to you. There will be a person from CPS there also. I will be there with you the whole time so you don't have to be afraid. Just tell them the truth about what happened OK." Colby just nodded his head a couple of times and then looked out the window. A few minutes later we arrived at the PD and Colby and I took the elevator up to the Youth Services office. Det. Smith was sitting behind his desk chatting with Ms. Johnston, a CPS worker I had worked with many times before. After I introduced Colby to Det. Smith and Ms. Johnston, Det. Smith had him sit down in a chair next to his desk. Det. Smith asked Colby a few general questions like his name, address, and phone number. He then told Colby that he needed to record this interview as he turned on a video recorder mounted on the wall. Det. Smith started out by stating this was an interview with Colby and then stated everyone's name that was in the room. Det. Smith was very good with kids and was able to make kids feel very comfortable when having to report what had happened to them. He then looked at Colby and asked him to tell him what had happened to him on Friday. Colby talked very quiet but was able to get through the whole story without stopping. Det. Smith asked Colby a few questions and then after asking Ms. Johnston if she had and questions, he thanked Colby for being so brave and reporting this. He asked Colby, "Is it alright if I take some photos of your injuries? Mike can be in the room if you would like." Colby said it was OK and Det. Smith had Colby stand up next to a white wall as he got his camera. Det. Smith first took a couple of photos of Colby from the front and then asked Colby to turn around for him. Det. Smith asked Colby to take his shirt off which he did and he took several photos of the marks on Colby's back. Det. Smith asked Colby if he had any other marks on his body. Colby's head and eyes dropped to the floor again. Det. Smith looked over at me and motioned for me to talk with Colby. I walked up behind Colby and in a very quiet voice asked Colby if he had any other marks. Colby said, "I think there are some on my butt." "Colby we are going to have to take some pictures of those also. Would you feel more comfortable if Ms. Johnston stepped out of the room?" Colby just nodded his head. I looked over at Ms. Johnston who was already walking to the door. After she had closed the door behind her, I said, "Ok, it is just us guys in here now, can you take your shorts off for us." Colby slid his thumbs inside the waist band of his basket ball shorts and pulled them over his slim hips, letting them drop to the floor. I was still standing right behind Colby and whispered, "We need you to take them all the way off, bud." Colby lifted one foot at a time and flung his shorts off to one side. I took a couple of steps back so Det. Smith could take a few pictures of Colby in his boxers. We could both see a couple of marks on the back of Colby's thighs just below his boxers. After Det. Smith snapped a few pictures, I walked back up to Colby placing my hands on his shoulders, careful not to touch any of the welts on his back. Again I whispered, "Colby we need you to step out of your boxers so Det. Smith can photograph all the marks." Again Colby slowly hooked his thumbs in his boxers and lowered them over his butt and hips. I had to bite my lip when I looked down and saw how black and blue Colby's ass checks were. I don't know how that kid sat in a chair all weekend without bursting into tears. Again I asked Colby to step out of his boxers as he did his shorts and after I stepped back Det. Smith took several more photos. As I was standing to the side of Colby I noticed some of the welts wrapped around his side. I motioned to Det. Smith that he needed to take some photos from the side. After he took a couple of each side, I stepped back up to Colby and carefully put my hands on his shoulders and turned him around so his back was to the wall. Colby's eyes never left the floor. Det. Smith stepped back in front of Colby and took a few more pictures of Colby's front side where the belt had wrapped around Colby's sides and left a few marks very close to his privates. Det. Smith said, "Colby I need to take one more picture but I need you to look up at the camera. Can you do that for me? I know this is embarrassing but I need you to look at the camera for just one more picture and then you can get dressed." Colby looked up with tears running down his checks. Det. Smith snapped one last picture and I handed Colby his boxers which he quickly put on. After Colby put his shorts and shirt back on I pulled him into a hug and whispered, "You did great bud, I'm very proud of you. You want a soda?" I walked Colby into an adjoining break room and had him sit down on a couch after getting him a soda from the frig. I turned on the TV for him and threw him the remote. I said, "I'm going to speak with Det. Smith and Ms. Johnston for a few minutes, you just hang out here, OK?" When I got back to Det. Smith's desk, Ms. Johnston was already back in the office and was on the phone. Det. Smith and I waited as she finished her phone call. When she finished she looked at the both of us and said, "You both know that boy can not go back to his home. I have already started the search for a foster home to place Colby in. Mike, do you know if Colby has any family in the area?" "I don't think so. I know his dad is in the military and he is an only child. I have never heard of him talk about any family in the area. Sara, I have a very good friend and his two sons living with me. Colby is the best friend of one of Steve's sons. What would it take to place Colby in my house?" I really didn't think about it as the words came out of my mouth. I knew I was taking a huge risk in disclosing Steve's and my relationship but I could not live with myself if Colby had to be placed in a foster home. Sara said, "I would have to get you approved first. I would have to do a home visit and interview everyone in the house. We could use your background check from the PD, so that won't be a problem. If everything goes well, I should be able to get you approved later today." "Let me make a phone call real quick but can you get the process started?" I asked. I noticed Det. Smith looking at me with a little smile on his face. Sara got back on her phone as I stepped out of the office to call Steve. When Steve answered, I gave him a real quick run down on everything that happened so far at the PD. Then I said, "Steve, I need to ask you a question. CPS is going to remove Colby from his parents at least until the investigation is complete. I don't want Colby going to some foster home. I asked the CPS worker if Colby could stay with us. She said she would have to get us approved as a foster home and that she would have to interview everyone in the house and do a home visit. I am sure she will figure out that you and I are more than just friends when she sees that we are sleeping in the same bed. Are you OK with that?" Steve didn't hesitate at all. He said, "I don't care who finds out that I am in love with you. We told Colby that we would ensure that he is safe and I can't think of a better way to make sure he is safe than if he was living with us." ********** Thanks for reading and for all the positive feed back.
