They are a product of the author's imagination. In 1967, the most dangerous STDs were Syphilis and Gonorrhea, which could be cured by penicillin, or the new antibiotics. Condoms were not needed for gay sex. Tom and John went to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. They ate, then went to the brochure display. That day, they decided on the "Floating Market" tour. Just like the day before, they called the number listed. (Tom had mastered the art of using the Thai telephone.) They were told a driver would be at the hotel in about half an hour, and to pay the driver. Tom and John sat on chairs in the lobby, to wait for the driver. They were joined by several other American Soldiers on R & R from Vietnam. Like the previous day, a young Thai man, in shorts, entered from the outside, and went to the registration desk. The Hotel Manager and the driver, came over to Tom and John and the others. The manager said: "This is Michael. He will take you to the "Floating Market" tour." There followed the traditional bowing. Tom was delighted when Michael put out his hand to be shaken. They shook hands, and Michael escorted them outside to a van. The van was half full with other American soldiers. They drove quickly to the Chao Phraga River. They unloaded in a parking lot and went down the ramp of a floating dock, and stepped into a Thai boat. Thai boats were interesting: they had an automobile engine with a long pole coming out the rear, with a propeller on the end. There was no transmission, only a hand-operated accelerator. The boat was steered by moving the propeller to the left or right, with the engine going in the opposite direction. The "Pivot" point was where the engine attached to the boat. There were rubber tubes running from the engine to the river. The river water was used to cool the engine. The boat left the dock, going very slowly, till they were in the middle of the river where the boat "Driver"opened it up. They went Up the river at a high speed. The feeling was exhilarating. A tour guide, using a megaphone, pointed out all the sights along the river. All of a sudden, the boat driver slowed down. The tour guide looked up the river, because she was confused by the boat slowing down. They all looked up the river and saw the royal barge/boat coming down the river. The tour guide was ecstatic and quickly explained that the Royal Barge was still powered by paddles, and the "Rowers" were practicing for a Royal Procession the following week. Tom and John took many photos of the royal barge. As soldiers, they were on vacation, but their instincts were those of photographers, and they took the opportunity to photograph the royal barge. This was an opportunity that could not be missed! As the Royal Barge came abreast of them, the boat they were in came to a halt, With the "driver" pivoting the engine down, so the propeller came out of the water. All of the Thai's on the boat stood and bowed their heads towards the royal barge. The Thai Royal Barge was like an exotic temple on a boat. The Royal Throne was under a pagoda like roof, with Dragons on the end, and open on all sides so the people could see the king. There was so much real gold encrusted on the barge, that it was a miracle that it didn't sink. The "trim" was painted with a bright red lacquer. The paddlers along the sides, were wearing traditional garb, which Americans would call a "sarong." They were bare to the waist, and were very muscular. The paddle blades were all gold in color, on Teak poles. It was an impressive sight, and would serve the purpose of impressing the peasants, with the power of the King! Thailand was a Constitutional Monarchy, with a figurehead King, a Prime minister and an elected parliament; although there were many coups, turning the country, usually, into a military dictatorship. However, no matter who took control of the government, the King was sacrosanct and remained the titular head of state. When the Royal Barge passed, the boat driver tipped the engine up, thus putting the propellor back in the water, and continued up the river at a high speed. They went several miles, when the boat slowed down as they entered one of the many canals (Clongs). Soon they were in the Floating Market, a World Famous Tourist attraction. There were stores along both shores in buildings on stilts, as well as the many hand powered boats, which sold anything and everything you could imagine, including food. It was these boats that gave The Floating Market its name. There was a boat speed limit, so none of the boats were in danger of capsizing. Many of the hand powered boats, (like long Canoes), came right up to the Tourist Boats, and several people onboard, purchased assorted items. The tourist boat seemed to go along a prescribed route. The whole atmosphere was very laid back. The natives haggled, but it was not intense! All too soon the tour of The Floating Market was over, and the boat went out onto the river. The boat driver speeded up and the tourist boat raced down the river. Soon they were back to the starting point. The boat driver very carefully maneuvered the boat to the floating dock. Everyone exited the boat. Although the polite Thais did not ask for a tip, they would accept any given them. On the way up the ramp on the floating dock, Tom slipped the tour guide a $5.00 bill, as any tip was shared with the boat driver and the other Staff members. Thais were very honest people! They got in the van, and the van driver drove everyone back to their hotel. When they got back to their hotel, Tom slipped the van driver a $1.00 bill. They went into the air conditioned lobby, and after a few moments of relishing the low humidity and 72 degree temperature, they went into the restaurant that was still serving lunch. They sat down and ordered a hamburger and French fries. When they were done eating, they paid for the meal and then went back to their room, which had been cleaned by the hotel staff while they were out. As they were walking down the hall, Tom saw the bellboy who had handled their luggage and who had come on to him. Tom gave the key to John and told him to go and open the door to their room. John took the key and headed down the hall. Tom called the bellboy over to him and asked him what time he got off. The boy said that he got off work at 8 PM. Tom whispered into his ear: "If you want some sex two horny Americans, come to our room after you get off." The legend, then, was that Americans were much better endowed than oriental men, by several inches. The boy jumped at the chance to be with a well endowed man, much less with two. He nodded and smiled. Tom continued down the hall and went into his room. Upon entering, John asked Tom how much he owed as Tom had been paying for everything they did together. Tom did some quick math in his head, and gave John the figure. John reached for his wallet. He paid Tom, the specified amount with no questions (He was that comfortable with Tom's honesty.) Since it was still early in the day, and nothing was planned until that night, Tom suggested a nap. The two took off their clothes, and they stretched out on their beds, in their Army issued boxers. They quickly went to sleep. Before he slept, Tom licked his lips in appreciation of the night's planned activities. He fantasized about a three-way of him, John, and the Thai bellboy. His pleasant thoughts led to a peaceful sleep.
