"Yea, it's going to take some time getting used to running here with the hills." I grabbed and bottle of water and went to go see what he was doing. He was sitting on the floor going through some boxes of stuff that where sitting in the living room. It had been a week since we moved in but we still had quite a bit of stuff to unpack. Everything just ended up pilled up in the dinning room until we could get to it, it was a lot of stuff but we where making progress slowly. The box he was going through was of pictures that I had in my bedroom. At the bottom of the box was a photo album that I had kept under my bed. "Where was this picture taken?" Chris asks pointing to a picture that was in the album, I could tell he was trying to keep from laughing. It was a picture of me and my grandpa that was taken when I was sixteen, right before I went of the ice. It was a bright blue extremely tight outfit that didn't leave much to the imagination. "Munich, Germany, my mom took it just before I was going out to do my warm up. We fought for weeks over that outfit. I still think she is mad that I wore it." I was laughing thinking about the arguments that we had over what I was wearing when I skated. "I think you look hot in it" Chris said leaning over to give me a kiss on the cheek." Ugh you reek, babe, go take a shower please." He pushed me away. "I thought you liked it when I came home from a run and was all and sweaty" "I do but, I met the neighbors while you where gone and they have invited us over for dinner tonight and we need to be over there in about an hour," He pushed me off of him and went back to looking through the photo album that he was looking at. I went to the bed room and stripped off my running clothes. When I walked by the mirror in the bathroom I stopped and looked at myself for a minute, even for someone who had to do light workouts for a while I still looked the same way I did three years before: six foot two, brown hair, bright blue eyes, a toned body and no body hair but a treasure trail. I always joked with Chris that I was going to shave the treasure trail off one day; he told me that he would kill me if I did. After looking at myself in the mirror for a few minutes I went and got in the shower. One of the nice parts of the house we bought it had a massaging shower head and he helped work the kinks out in my neck and shoulders. When I got out of the shower and was drying off I walked back in the bed room and saw that Chris had laid some clothes out on the bed for me, apparently he thought I couldn't dress myself. When I was sitting down on the bed to put on my shoes I noticed that he had also put a picture frame on the nightstand. It was a picture of me and my family that was taken after I had won silver at the Jr. Worlds when I was sixteen; I smiled when I looked at it. "Will you hurry up, I told them we would be there in fifteen minutes!" Chris was standing in the door way when I looked up. "It's not like it's that far to go dear" I got up and walked over to him and put my arms around his waist. "I know its not but you take forever to get ready to go anywhere, I wasn't even sure you where out of the shower yet..." I leaned in and kissed him to stop him from rambling. "What was that for?" "Just for you being you and being understanding about everything" I wrapped my arms around him and gave him a hug. "You are weird you know that." He said chuckling "Now come on we have to get going, don't want to make a bad impression on our new neighbors" I went and grabbed my wallet, keys and phone off the dresser and followed him out of the bedroom. We made sure that the house was locked up and then walked over to our neighbor's house. When we got to the door Chris rang the door bell and a beautiful blonde woman answered the door. "Chris, I am so glad that you could make it." She said opening the door and letting us in. "Lisa, this is my partner Brian, Brian this is Lisa." Chris said introducing us. "It's nice to meet you; you have a very nice home." I said shaking her hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you to; sorry the house is a mess we just moved in a couple weeks ago." "We know the feeling, we are still trying to get settled and find stuff in boxes" I said looking around the living room. I noticed some pictures of her and a really good looking guy on the fireplace mantel. "Brice is outside on the patio, we are just doing bar b qued chicken and grilled vegetables tonight, I hope that is ok." Lisa said showing us out on to the patio. "That sounds great, Brian rarely eats anything but chicken." Chris said as we where walking out o the patio. When we stepped out on the patio the smell was amazing and the view they had of the mountains was much better then what we had off our patio. "Hey Chris, its good to see you again, would you like a beer or anything to drink" Brice said in a very masculine husky voice that sounded vaguely familiar to me. "Sure, I will take a beer, Brice this is my partner Brian, Brian this is Brice," Chris said reaching into the cooler getting a beer and handing me one. "Brian, it's nice to meet you, Chris was telling us all about you earlier, if you would rather have wine we have that also." Brice said as we shook hands. "It's nice to met you to, and a glass of wine sounds great, I am not much of a beer drinker" I replied shaking Brice's hand. Lisa appeared from behind me with a glass or red wine. "I hope Lambrusco is ok, it is one of the few red wines that I like." She said handing me the glass as Chris started laughing behind me. "Oh that is one of my favorite wines, I can't tell the difference between all the different kinds, and we had this at Olive Garden one night and I have been hooked since." I said chuckling as I took a sip. "That is too funny, Olive Garden is the first place I ever had it to, So Chris said that you are taking sometime off but are planning to go to grad school?" Lisa ask as we where sitting down. "Yea, I graduated in May and am wanting to take sometime off before I go back" "That is what I did, and it was the best choice I have ever made, I am starting next month on my masters." "What are you planning on getting your masters in" Brice asks coming to join us. "Sports training, you seem really familiar to me Brice," I ask sitting my glass back down on the table. "I was going to say the same thing to you, but I guess you beat me to the punch." "What do you do?" I ask him, he reminded me of someone from when I used to skate but I couldn't put my finger on it. "I am a free lance sports writer, I mainly cover the winter sports" When he said that I knew exactly where I new him from. He was the last reporter I talked to before I went out on the ice the night I fell in Salt Lake. "You where in Salt Lake City, in 02` covering the Olympics," I finished off my glass of wine right after I said it, not knowing where this conversation was going. "Now, I know why you are so familiar, the best article I wrote and never had published was based off my interview with you" Brice said. I think he was seeing if I would let the conversation continue on the subject or if I would change the subject. Chris put his hand on mine and gave it a tight squeeze. "Why didn't you ever have it published?" I decided the let the conversation unfold as it wanted to. "After what happened that night, I didn't feel that it was right to do a piece about, your personal life off the ice" "It would have been a nice distraction from all the coverage, me falling that night received. Seemed like all you read or heard in the news for weeks was about the "Golden boys fall from grace"" I said chuckling; I was kind of shocked about how easy it was for me to talk about that part of my life. For so long it was a part of me that I kept hidden from the world around me and now I was talking about it as if I was still skating "Wait a minute, you are Brian Davis, the infamous bad boy of skating" Lisa ask with a confused look on her face. "Now there is a nick name I haven't heard in a long, long time" I said laughing. While I was moving up through levels of skating I earned the nick name "The Bad Boy of Skating", due to my comments about the way the sport was judged. The older I got the more critical I became about the governing body of the sport and their view points on certain aspects, the one thing I was most vocal about was the way we where scored. "How did you earn that nick name, I have known you for over a year now and nothing you do or say gives you the bad boy reputation" Chris ask trying to figure out how I earned my nick name. "I was very out spoken about how the sport was run and the rules that we had to follow. Remember the one video that we watched at my parents form when I was sixteen and when you heard everyone the crowd goes crazy after the scores came up?" I ask turning to face Chris. "Yea, I remember seeing the expression on your face change from very happy to very angry" "I was give a very big point deduction for doing a quad jump in my program, and at the time we were not allowed to do quads in a juniors completion and when I saw the score I went back out on the ice and did the jump again right in front of the table where he judges and directors where sitting. In doing that I was suspended for two competitions and that is when I earned the nick name." I was laughing remembering that night and the backlash that followed. As we where talking Brice said that the food was done and we all fixed a plate while we ate we chatted about different things and got to know each other better. I and Lisa finished off two bottles of wine before the night was over. As the evening was winding down Brice ask me if I wanted cigar and we walked around the back yard while Chris helped Lisa clean up from dinner. "There is one question that I want to ask you and you don't have to answer if you don't want to" Brice said as we where walking back on the patio. "Shoot, I will answer almost any questions you ask?" I said sitting back down in one of the chairs by the table. "Have you thought about trying to make a come back, I know it's been awhile?" I could tell Brice was hesitant to ask that question. I had to take a minute before I answered him, see up until the past week a come back was something I thought I could never make happen, but letting that part of my life come back to me was starting to change my way of thinking. Chris and me where becoming closer all the time now that I had let him know about that part of my life. "Up until the past few days the thought of a come back was the last thing on my mind. I am not saying yes or no right now, I think that I have to do some soul searching before I will even know if that is something that I would want to take on." I was even surprised with the answer that I gave him, and I could tell by his reaction that he was to. "One more question, if you decide to make a come back, can I have the first interview?" I think he was kind of embarrassed to ask that question. "If I do I guarantee you will get the first interview, I think I owe you that after you didn't publish the last one" I smiled when I said it just to let him know that I was serious, a few minutes after we finished talking Lisa and Chris came back outside. I could tell that Chris was getting tired so we said good bye and promised to have them over soon. As we were walking back to our house I looked and Chris, for once I was at a place that I wanted to be and knew that if I wanted to everyone around me would be supportive of me making the decision to try to make a comeback. Over the next few weeks we finished getting unpacked and got settled in the house. Chris started his job and absolutely loved it, his bosses were very impressed with how creative he was and the ideas that he was bringing to the table for some of the projects that they where working on. I spent my days exploring the area after I would get back from running, Lisa and Brice helped me get my bearings. Brice was joining me on my runs a few times a week; it gave us a chance to talk and get to know each other better. We started meeting some of our new neighbors and started to make friends with people. One day when I was driving around I saw a sign for a year round ice skating rink, before I new what I was doing I was pulling into the parking lot. I got out of my car and paused for a second, I realized that I hadn't been to one since I got out of the hospital. As I walked in the door the unique smell hit me, even thought it had been awhile everything was still familiar to me. As I walked by the counter the guy that was working looked up at me, he was probley in his early twenties and was a rather attractive guy. "Hi, can I help you?" He asks when I walked up to the counter. "Hi, I was wondering if you do skate sharpening here, and how much it is to use the rink?" I ask him with a smile. "Since its the off season right now, we only charge $15 to use the rink, but you can get a month pass for $75, you would have to talk to my dad about sharpening skates, he does all the repairs and sharpening, but he is gone right now". "Would you mind if I looked around a bit?" "Sure, we have a skate shop around the corner over there, and there is a locker room area over on the back wall." I spent the next few minutes walking around and checking things out, I smiled to myself thinking about how much I used to hate having to go to practice but how much I loved it once I got there. After I walked around and looked at everything I went into the skate shop, it reminded me so much of the one I used to go to the different types of blades and skates, all the gear. After spending a few minutes in the shop I walked back out and to the front counter. "Thanks for letting me look around," I told him." I am Brian by the way" "Its not a problem, no one really ever comes in until around four o'clock during the week. I am Tyler; it's nice to meet you." He said with a smile that could light up the whole building. "It's nice to met you to Tyler, I will be back soon, me and my partner just moved here and I was just looking around to see what there was to do" I said shaking his hand. "That's cool, hopefully your partner will come with you next time, Oh and I talked to my dad and he said that he would do your first skate sharpening for free since you would be a new customer." "Tell your dad thank you very much for me, we may be in later tonight or tomorrow." I said as I was walking out the door. When I got home I went in the bed room and put on my knee and ankle brace and got my roller blades out of the hall closet. I went and set on the steps coming off the patio and put on my roller blades and helmet. I tentatively stood up and gained my balance. I spent the next little while slowly going in circles around the drive way as I got more confident and sure of my self I started to increase my speed. I started going up and down the drive way and eventually made it out to the street, I rollerbladed around for awhile and then went back to the patio and sat down on the steps. When I was starting to take off my skates Chris was pulling in the drive way from work. He was a big smile when he walked around the car toward me. "So, I take it you where feeling a little adventurous today?" he said giving me a kiss on the lips. "Maybe, thought I should try something new." I said as I was getting up to go inside "So what do you want for dinner?" "A salad is fine with me; I had a big lunch at work with a client." We spent the rest of the evening lounging around the house and going through the last few boxes that we needed to get unpacked. My mom called and talked for a little while and said that her and my dad where going to try to make a trip out to see us soon and she got me caught up on all the gossip that was going on back at home. While I was talking to her I noticed that Chris went into one of the other bedrooms, he had been keeping the door to that room closed and I never went in there. After he came out we curled up on the couch and watched TV for a little while longer before we got ready for bed. Chris was in bed reading when I came out of the bathroom from brushing my teeth and washing my face. "So, I found an ice skating rink today when I was driving around" I said lying on my side to face him. "Oh, I am surprised that you found one that was open this time of year." Chris laid his book down and looked over at me. "Its a year round place, I went in and looked around and they have a skate shop that does repairs and sharpening, I may take the skates that my mom bought us up there tomorrow and get them sharpened." "Why not wait and get them sharpened until we use them?" "Well I was thinking that maybe we could have a date night tomorrow night and possibly go break in the new skates." I was watching Chris's face as I said this and the look was priceless. "Babe, I have never ice skated before," "Well there is always a first time for everything, it's a lot like roller blading" "If you want to we can go, but only if you want to. I don't want you to do something that you aren't ready to do." He said leaning over to look at me. He had nothing but love in his eyes and that is what I needed to see. "I think I am ready" I said as I lay down and he snuggled up to me and feel asleep. I laid there awake for a little while and thought about the decision that I had made. Was I really ready, I looked over at the picture on the nightstand and saw my grandpa's smile and that was what answered the question for me, I was ready? When I finally fell asleep I slept better then I had in a long time and actually woke up in the same position that I fell asleep in, something that was very unusual for me. After Chris left for work I went for a run and ended up running farther then I had in awhile. When I got back to the house and took a shower I took care of a few things that needed to be taken care of, around lunch time Brice came can knocked on the door to see if I wanted to go have lunch with him and Lisa. When I was getting ready to leave I went to the closet and pulled out the skates that my mom and sent us and put them in the car so I could take them to get sharpened after lunch. When I got to the restaurant where I was meeting Brice and Lisa they where already seated inside. "Hey, sorry I am a little late, I got lost." I said as I slid into the booth. "Its ok, we just got seated, how has your day been going so far?" Lisa said handing me a menu. "Perrty good, went for a run and took care of some stuff around the house that needed to be done" "You went for a longer run this morning then you normally do?" Brice said. "Yeah, guess I had a lot to think about this morning, the past month has been kind of crazy." "I understand what you mean, I am just finally glad that we are settled in the house, especially with school starting for me on Monday" Lisa said as the waitress came up to the table to take our orders. We chatted over lunch about what our plans were for the weekend. I ended up inviting them over to the house for dinner on Saturday night. While we where talking I intentionally left out that me and Chris where going skating that night. After lunch I drove over to the skating rink when I walked in the door Tyler was at the counter helping someone. "Hey Brian, glad you came back" He said as he walked over to where I was standing. "Hey Tyler, how is your day going." I ask him. "It's going ok, are those the skates that you needed sharpened" He pointed to the bags that I had on my shoulder. "Yea, is your dad in today?" "He is over in the skate shop, I will introduce you" He walked out from behind the counter and I followed him over to the skate shop. When I saw the man standing behind the counter there was no mistaking that he was Tyler's dad. The looked exactly like each other about 5'9'', blonde hair, blue eyes and very well built. "Dad, this is Brian the guy that I told you about yesterday" Tyler said introducing us. "Nice to meet you Brian, I'm Richard" He stood and we shook hands. "It's nice to meet you also, sir" I said. I noticed that he really didn't look old enough to have a son that looked like he was in his early twenties. "So, Ty said that you need some skates sharpened, and please drop the sir crap I am not that old" "Sorry force of habit, I grew up in Texas. Yea these are the skates that I need to get done" I set the skates on the counter. "Wow, these are nice top of the line right now?" "Oh, I didn't know my mom bought them for me and my partner and they where at our house when we got here." I was trying to play dumb and not let on that I knew anything about skates. "Well it will take me a couple of hours to get them done, but as I told Ty to tell you the first time is on the house" "That works out great for me; I have some errands that I needed to run anyway, Ty did relay your message yesterday." "Well it's about time that boy did something right, sometimes his head is so far in the clouds I don't think he can breath."Richard laughed. "We all were like that at his age, well I will be back in a couple hours, I have to get some errands ran before it gets too late" We said our goodbyes and I said goodbye to Tyler as I was walking out. I spent the next couple hours running a few errands that I needed to get taken care of that day. On my way home I stopped by and picked up the skates and told Tyler that we would be back in later that night. When I got home Chris was just getting there to and we changed clothes really quick and headed out to dinner. We chatted over dinner about random things like we always did and I told him that I had invited Brice and Lisa for dinner the following night. After dinner we headed over to the skating rink, when Tyler saw us in waved us by the counter and told us that it was on him that night. We found a bench close to one of the entrances to the rink and set down. I spent a few minutes telling a little about skating safety and showing him how to remove the guards from his blades and put them back on. When I was sitting down and putting my skates on, I had the oddest feeling come over me it was something that I couldn't explain. Once we where ready I helped Chris get to his feet before I stood up and we walked over to the ice. When we got to the wall that went around I stopped and stood there for a moment, before I stepped onto the ice. I guess its now or never I thought to myself as I stepped out on the ice for the first time in three years. Well that is chapter two of the story I hope you all enjoy it.
